Demi'spov

Mate.

Harlyn repeated, purring in a low voice.

The aura emanating from the wolf atop me enveloped us and I bowed my head in submission before looking up at him.

He didn't say a word, his deep green inviting eyes bore deep into my browns captivating me in the most intense gaze I had ever found myself locked in.

I couldn't stop myself, I raised my good hand moving it to touch him but he recoiled immediately leaping off me like he was disgusted.

I quickly sat up and Haris ran to my side to join me as the brown wolf, my mate let out a terrifying growl that reverberated through the forest causing me to tremble in fear.

As he continued to growl, he prowled backward assuming a defensive stance and I moved towards him, "What happened?" I whispered softly stretching out my hand in an attempt to touch him again.

"Back off!" The wolf barked letting out another terrifying growl causing Haris to cling to me.

And almost immediately, the other wolves followed suit, their growls echoed within the forest and moving to protect their Alpha.

From their midst I could see another brown wolf walk to the alpha, it was a she-wolf.

My heart broke as she touched her snout to him pushing him further away from me and as she did that, his eyes that were locked on me moved to her direction causing ache to already broken heart.

I could see them having a minute interaction before he let out a howl and leapt into the thickets.

Mate doesn't want us, Harlyn whimpered sensing his departure, why is this happening again?

I no reply to give her seeing that we were in danger as they advanced menacingly with glowing eyes and canines bared in pure anger.

"Are we going to die?"Haris clung onto shivering in fear, "I don't like this."

"Me neither." I agreed, my heart pounding in my chest.

"Shift!"The she-wolf who had interacted with my mate barked at me, "Shift, filthy rogue."

"I can't." I shook my head, my voice barely a whisper, "My wolf is present but not yet physically."

"So you are weaker than I thought!"She laughed, her words laced with disdain, "Is this your pup?" She gestured towards Haris.

"No, my brother."

She snorted before barking out another bout of laughter, "You are a handful, His Majesty deserves better!"

His majesty?

She didn't wait for a response, turning around to join the other wolves. They spoke in hushed tones making it impossible to hear them and they all turned to me when they were done.

The one who had tackled me earlier moved forward, "Move!" he growled.

I didn't think twice, I grabbed onto Haris's hand and bolted.

Why are you running away from mate? Harlyn out as I tried to get Haris to move faster.

I didn't look back as I ran, I didn't want to as my fear drove me to move faster.

I just wanted to get away from a life that would be similar to what I had endured and escaped from, that is if I am even spared.

As we ran, I couldn't hear howls or thudding of paws and I turned around to see that there was no sign of pursuit.

They let us go.

I didn't know if to feel glee or fear, something greater was at play  but I didn't ponder on it much as I had no time for that.

I slowed down to catch my breath and grabbed Hari's hand afterwards leading him to walk instead of running.

As we walked I noticed that we were getting deeper and deeper straying way from where I had seen my mate.

At the thought of him, a pain struck me deeply and I felt saddened knowing that I had yet been rejected again.

I had to run away, I would surely face what I faced at the hands of Logan if I was to stay with this mate and I remembered that the other wolf had addressed him as Your Majesty and they had bowed.

I had no clue what was happening.
