CAROLINE
I can't get that face out of my head as I go through the rest of the night by my grandmother's side with a smile plastered on my face. I have to wear this smile and act like I don't want to disappear into a hole and hide inside a hole but I've long decided that I'm way past hiding from my problems. I still bear the scars at my back to prove that thanks, grandma. "Caroline dear," Madam Quinn says and I turn my neck to give her my attention. She's not looking at me but that doesn't mean she's not seeing me. "You're stiff, dear.'' Her voice is light and humorous with pride and that makes me tense. "What's wrong?" "Nothing at all. I guess I'm just a little tired," I lie. "My head is spinning from all the names and faces I've recorded-" "Pay attention to every one of them," she interrupts and sets her levelled eyes on the guests around. "You'll need them as well as they'll need you." "Yes, grandmother." Her lips curl in a smile and she's turning to me to grin, "You are one I have decided to be very proud of, Caroline. I'm defying all odds by putting all my hopes in you." "I will not let you down," I quickly assure her. "Good," she narrowed her eyes to the side. "Who is that... man you were standing outside with? You looked far too relaxed." Shit! Her eyes may be old but that didn't mean she was blind. Madam Quinn had eyes and ears everywhere. I knew this beforehand and I've been prepared ever since but Malcolm caught me off guard. Wearing a calming smile, I chuckle a bit and relax my shoulders. I understand what she's trying to do. I mustn't lose my cool at all times. "That was Malcolm York, grandmother. He's your granddaughter's husband." "Oh!" She looks away. "I have heard of him. They have a child together- Marylin. What did he want with you? If he's looking to hop to you because you're now the heiress then," she chuckles with little to no emotion on her face. I can already tell what she's thinking. "A shame." "I cannot say for certain but it seems he mistook me for someone else," I cleared her doubts. "Even if he wishes to hop, I'm afraid there's already a long queue. I'm aware that Mr. Williams just called for his son," I glance at the elderly man keeping an eye on me as he waits impatiently by the door. "Yes. You'll have many suitors, dear. Be nice and keep your head up," She advises before stretching her hand to me, "Now let's play Cinderella before those suitors arrive." It's easy to love her. I clutched her hand and she grabbed me firmly. I glance at her wrinkled hands that trembled due to old age. These same hands can be harsh and brutal when they want to be. "What would you like for dinner?" I ask with a smile, leading her out to the car as her guards open the door for her and I help her in. "Come home and we'll decide together," she says and her guard shuts the door before they drive off. I'm still wearing my smile as they drive off and I watch her leave. Once she goes, my car is pulling over before me and the passenger's window is rolling down to reveal a familiar face. "We have five minutes before they notice you're gone." "Right on time, Susan," I'm getting in and we're driving off immediately. As I relax my shoulders with a deep sigh, I feel Susan's eyes on me. She's my personal assistant as well as the only friend I'm allowed to have. I'm pretty sure Madam Quinn doesn't know we've moved from just assistant and boss to friends. She will lose her job if she finds out. "The headlines are going crazy," Susan announces. "I saw he left angrily." "You would too if your inheritance is snatched from you," I lean back on the seat and close my eyes with a deep sigh. "Book me a massage by tomorrow. I need to get all these tension out... as well as their evil eyes." "Yes, ma'am. Do we resume fully on Monday?" "No. We start tomorrow," there's no rest for me in this world. Not until my mission is complete. Being announced as heiress is only the first step. The first step to problems. A phone rings beside me and my brows knit at the disturbance. "Sorry, I have to take this, Hello," Susan says, going all professional in an instant. "From York tech? Are you Mr. Malcolm's assistant?" That's... fast. "Miss Quinn cannot come to the phone right now. You can leave me the message and she'll get back to you- Oh. Oh, Mr. York. Y-Yes, sir-" Did he call himself? I sit up straight and turn to Susan who quickly pulls the phone away from her ear and covers the mouthpiece with her hands. "Him?" I ask and she nods. "He asks to speak with you." Why would he go through the trouble? "I'll pass," I rub my temples and lean back on my seat, closing my eyes again to take a breather. I don't need more headache. I already broke character once when I laughed so heartily but who could blame me? His eyes were literally begging me to say something and that attitude was so sickening that it was funny. There's a little commotion around me as I can hear Susan and the driver whispering back and forth but I can't quite make out their words. "Uhm, Miss. Quinn," Susan interrupts my moment of peace. "I'm not in the mood to talk to anyone, Susan. Whatever he has to say can wait. if he wants a meeting, go ahead and book him down for 10a.m tomorrow-" "Yes, okay but that's not it," she sounds concerned and I look at her. She's looking behind us and I see she has put down the call, "We're being followed." "Followed?" What does that even mean? I turn behind to see a black car following at a distance. "Susan, it's a straight road. They could just be going their own way." "No, Miss Quinn. I noticed them when we drove out of the hall. I've taken the longest route and even tried losing them but they are still on our tail," the driver announced. "What do we do? We can't die here. You only just got your position," Susan whines. "I'll call the cops-" but her phone rings insead. "It's Mr. York again-" Could it be... I turn to the car again and I try to picture Malcolm driving. I squint my eyes as anger washed over me and I snatch the phone from Susan, answering the phone, I say in one breath, "Mr. York, this is Caroline." He's silent for a while before he speaks, "Finally. I thought your assistant wasn't going to put you through-" "You can say whatever you want to say now but first, can we stop this barbaric act? It's a little too belittling of your status. I wouldn't want your wife to get the wrong idea." "What are you talking about?" I can hear the frown in his voice. "And Louise is not with me right now-" "I don't care. Please stop following my car. I'll book you in for 10a.m tomorrow-" "Wait, what? You're being followed?" he asks in shock that I recoil and turn to the car that's now gaining fast on us. The sight strikes danger in my heart that for the first time in a long while I feel fear. "I haven't even left the hall yet. Where are you? Give me your location right now and I'll come find you!”CAROLINE We're pulling over once we get to the mansion and I step down. "Drop Susan back home safely," I tell my driver and my assistant looks at me with worry on her face while I smile back, my default setting as the car drives off. I hear his footsteps before I turn to see him storming towards me. Once he gets closer, he grabs my shoulders and he looks concerned immediately. "Are you alright? Did you get hurt?" Malcolm asks, searching my gaze with worry in his face. His expression is foreign to me and that concern in his voice but I can't lie, they do make him look very good. Now all that's left is for him to drop on his knees crying and pleading for all-- ah, let's not get carried away. I hope my poker face is okay. "I'm fine," I take a step back and his arms fall from my shoulders. I draw in a deep breath, it's hard to catch a break from his touchy hands. "You didn't need to come all the way here," I tell him. "I already called the cops-" "I got here faster," he points out w
MALCOLM"Master York, welcome back-"I storm into the house, ignoring my workers standing by the door to welcome me back. With my fist clenched and teeth gritted in annoyance, I don't bat an eyelid their way."Sh-Should I set dinner for you, sir or would you prefer it in your study?"I can't forget the way she looked at me when I pulled her so close. I'm half pleased that I was able to tear her mask even if it was for a moment but as if she had been programmed, she wore it back and acted like nothing happened. That darn woman! What's with her attitude; The silent treatment and the expressionless face?"Miss Marilyn slept off while waiting for you to return, sir. Would you like to have dinner with her?"Why the heck did I kiss her? I couldn't stop myself. The woman who has haunted my dreams finally appeared in the flesh, it was impossible to keep my hands to myself. Touching her shoulders wasn't enough and pinching myself didn't feel real-- what felt real, though, were her soft lips an
MALCOLMI barely got any sleep last night. After Marilyn mentioned that, I had to clear her doubts about her mother and I but we never got anywhere since Louise returned home and they both spent the night in Marilyn's room."Fuck," I rub my tired face as I look out of the driving car. I didn't expect my daughter would remember Caroline but she wasn't exactly too young when they met.She was only eight when I married Caroline and up until she turned eleven, the two never exactly got along.Caroline never mentioned this to me though. Marilyn's attitude was just impossible to ignore. I wonder if it was my mother feeding her all those things or if it was Louise brainwashing her but she never got to know how sweet Caroline could be or even give the poor woman a chance.Like a Quokka, Caroline would simply smile through it. I close my eyes as I try to picture the smile on her face but all I have are fading memories replaced by this new poker face."We're here, Mr. York," at my driver's word
CAROLINE Tearing my eyes from Malcolm's angry face-- he's been getting real mad and unable to hide the hate he has for me-- I turn to my secretary and arch my brow at her. "I-I'm sorry, I tried to stop him," Susan stuttered with tears in her eyes. Poor thing! She must've been terrified when he barged in. Susan hates confrontations and anyone who tries to challenge authority. She hates standing up to people and is easily frightened but she's a damn good secretary nonetheless. "Caroline?" Kris calls through the phone and I suddenly remember I was still talking to him before this beast of a man barged in. I want to walk away when I see Malcolm reach for me from the corner of my eyes. I smack his hand off my arm and offer him a little smile. He's stunned by my reaction that he does nothing as I head to the table and end the call. "Ahem!" Mr. Williams cleared his throat, drawing my attention. "I'm sorry, can we please reschedule? I'd like to have a talk with you some other time when i
CAROLINEThe question hangs in the air and it's enough to wake me from his earlier spell where I thought he was almost sorry for what he did. An apology wasn't what I had expected from Malcolm. In fact, I never want him to apologise. That sorrowful look on his face shook me up so bad. Apparently, preparing mentally doesn't affect what happens in reality. There's a big difference.Just like how I thought facing him in my head would make me immune to seeing him in reality.I turn to Malcolm with curiosity heavy on mh features and I stare in silence. He repeats his question again and I just stare because I'm trying to piece my thoughts and analyse him.So he's not sorry? I can't place my finger on it. Is he asking because he's curious or because he would like to know if I really have my life together. After kicking me out like that, he must've thought that was the end of my life. I can't blame him, up until our divorce, Malcolm was the only one in my life. He was like a god, a helpmate a
CAROLINEMalcolm leaves without another word. I stand in the middle of my office even after he's shut the door and I wait for his steps to fade out. After about five minutes where I'm sure he can't barge right back in, my legs finally give out.I fall on my ass with one hand on the floor to support me up and the other on my chest as I huff and pant for air. My heart is pounding in my chest while I try my hardest to calm my nerves. The serious look in his eyes flash in my mind and I frown so heavily enough to give myself wrinkles. He had been so serious when he threw a marriage proposal in my face again. His guts and his audacity irks me enough to make me tremble.I push my hair back from my face and look around my space to the CCTV camera. I made a mental note to ask for the footage of today. I need that as my protection from him… for now. I can only hope he doesn't try anything else. But I already have a feeling that he will. What exactly does this man want with me? We ended things s
CAROLINE I step into the house mumbling my thanks to the guard who held the door open for me. The mansion is surrounded by guards at Grandmother's disposal. After what happened last night, I think I should get some for myself. It wouldn’t be so bad. I noticed most business tycoons have guards. Take Uncle Edward and Malcolm for example. Their guards never leave their side like they await an attack every minute. It'll be bothersome but I guess since it's for my safety, I should- "Grandma, you shouldn't wear black too often. It's bad omen," I snap my head to the direction of the voice and pause when I recognize it. I know we share the same Grandmother but what is she doing here? "Keep your talks of omen to yourself, Louise. I'm still wondering what you're looking for," Grandma replied with annoyance in her tone. "Last time I saw you here, you were still in your teens." "What can I say? I missed you-" "Cut the bullcrap!" Oh, that's harsh but I smirk at her attitude. She's just as
CAROLINE This space looks familiar. It's the hotel I used to work at a few years ago. The 'shabby' hotel as Malcolm's mother would always say. "You picked this one from a shabby hotel and think you can make her a wife? Over my dead body, Malcom!" I barely remember her words these days but tonight, all I can hear is Malcolm's sweet and gentle voice. The very first time we met, he didn't hesitate to throw me a smile to flatter me and catch my attention. The image lasts only for a fleeting moment before he's kissing me and picking me up in his arms. What was supposed to be a one-night stand, turned into several and I found myself drowning in his affection and looking forward to his weekly visits. The 'shabby' hotel became his home and his room, well… let's just say it was easy to get to work since I practically started living there. "Caroline," The softness of his voice next to my ears took my breath away and I sighed softly, feeling his hand caress my breasts like he did every mo
CAROLINEI ate in silence. The food was tasteless on my tongue. Malcolm had numbed my senses and I couldn't even think straight. That was the most shocking thing I had ever heard in all my life. The nurses knocked before I could say a word. They helped me sit so I could eat and removed the needles from my arm.My stomach chose that time to rumble and they wasted no time in thrusting the food to me, offering to feed me if it was a hassle to feed myself.Malcolm was at one corner of the room, silently watching me eat. I still couldn't find the words to say to him, but I couldn't help thinking that he carried all that burden himself.Once we were alone again, I set the spoon down and looked at him.“What happened to the kids?” My voice was small and quiet.“Emma and Ethan are the only ones left.”My heart broke and I raised my chin to hold his fierce gaze. All I saw was guilt and a broken spirit.“What?” I couldn't even recognize my own voice, I was close to tears.“When they found out I
MALCOLMThe sound of the gun pierced the hallway but her scream was what made my heart tremble.“Caroline!” I rushed to her side as she collapsed, caught her before she could crumble to the floor and pressed my hand to her side to stop the blood.“Oh my god! Oh my god! Y-You shot a customer,” Emma whispered. “Y-You broke the rules!”“I-I wasn't aiming for her!”Did he just stutter? I turned to the Enforcer and he staggered in his steps. He looked tense, afraid too. His demeanor was completely off and his whole aura was terrified.“She's losing a lot of blood!” Ethan's voice caught my attention and I cupped her face, tears streaming down her wide eyes.“You're gonna be okay. I'll make sure of that. Emma, get the fucking medic to my room right now.” But she didn't move, she was too shaken from the sight of blood and from the situation.“Shit! Ethan! Take Emma out of here and get me a fucking medic now!”He sprung into action, pulling her wrist and dragging her out of the hallway. I gath
CAROLINEDing! The soft sound of the elevator sliced through the thick silence but it wasn't quite enough to pull me out of the shock I'd been thrown in.To think I was divorced on a dare was shocking to hear and almost impossible to believe but the look on Malcolm’s face was confirmation enough.“Well, we hope you're having a wonderful time with Louise. She's a keeper,” he pulled the chains and the girl jerked, groaning in pain. That woke me up.I couldn't get lost in my own past and allow such atrocities to happen right before my eyes.I looked at the girl to find her trembling. Her body was covered with marks and cuts. It was horrifying to look upon. He stepped out of the elevator, holding the chains like he was walking a dog.I moved forward but Malcolm grabbed my wrist and I snapped my head at him.“No,” he warned with a tight jaw and pleading eyes. This wasn't just about her, this was about…“Let go,” I whispered. “She needs help.”“You don't know what you're getting yourself in
MALCOLM“What do you mean by she's at the hotel?” I gripped the wheels and made the next turn. “How did she get in?” My heart drummed twice as much. How the heck did she get in? She wasn't supposed to find out about that place. I made a U-turn as quickly as I could.Louise and Marilyn would just have to wait for when I get back to scold their asses for what they've done.“Where's Ethan and Emma? I want them assigned to her, got it? No one else goes near her, do you understand that?”“Yes, sir. Are you on your way here?”“On high fucking speed, Britney.”It just had to be Patterson! That old bitch couldn't resist sending new souls to the devil's harem. It was a good thing it wasn't a weekend but then that didn't mean there wouldn't be anyone there to see her.“What the fuck are you getting yourself into, Caroline?”I imagined her clueless face filled with horror when she finally realized it wasn't just a normal hotel. There was a reason that the hotel was off the grid. It was the devil
Trigger warning.CAROLINEBe shameless.Have no fear.I played the words over and over as the elevator dinged. I smoothed my hand over my tennis skirt. It was too short in my opinion but it was already too late to get something different.According to them, the “game” was starting.Everyone was playing golf on the field and apparently, I had to participate in something. I couldn't just waltz in here and stay cooped up in my room even if I wanted that.“You're doing great,” Ethan whispered beside me yet his voice was full of humor. Apparently, these two were my personal… uhm… help. Emma had used the word “slave” without a care in this world but I didn't want to refer to them as that. They were human beings.“You'll learn,” was what she said when I opposed her reference to herself. Ethan mentioned to ignore her, she had a weird sense of humor.I folded my skirt in my fist as the elevator dinged and we stepped out. It was still bright outside and the weather seemed great for a sport but
CAROLINE “Cancel my plans for the afternoon, Susan. I have somewhere important to be.” “Miss. Caroline, please don't do anything rash. Also, why are there photos of you leaving the restaurant with the Patterson siblings? Did you… you didn't try to-” I slowed down the car when I got closer to the security check at the big black gate. I could barely even peep inside. The two security guards walked out from their corner and approached my car with a doubting face, glancing at each other as they approached me. “Susan,” I gulped. “I'll call you back. Handle things while I'm away,” I hung up before she could say another word. I was nervous for some reasons. “Deep breaths, deep breaths, Caroline.” One knocked on my window and bent his knees to be on my eye level as I lowered the window. “Wrong way, Miss?” he asked, arching a brow. I looked at the gate and shook my head, “No, no I'm supposed to be here.” His black eyes were sharp and icy. It pricked my skin and goosebumps broke out all
CAROLINEIn a few minutes, Louise and her family were the least of my worries. News came from an unknown source that Malcolm was close to completing his proposal for Miss Patterson. All hands were suddenly on deck as everyone had to race against time and it dragged on for some couple of days thanks to my special uncle trying to make my life a living hell. His team and my team were under so much pressure for the project and he never hesitated to spite my work. He found fault everywhere and would throw it in my face so I ended up doing the same. It was a tug of war every time we settled down for a presentation, trying to know which team came up with the best proposal. At the end of the week, I was drained, tired and sick of him. I wanted to kick it all away and just end things by smashing his head on a wall somewhere.I knew he was trying to frustrate my efforts and it worked. We both knew that Patterson had the final say. She could end up picking Malcolm's project over ours but we wa
MALCOLM"She's a fucking bitch and now everyone can see it too. She went there on purpose! That's Marilyn's favourite spot for lunch after school hours. She went there to try and manipulate my poor baby and you're not gonna do anything about it?" Louise rants came through the phone on my desk and I glanced at it and back at my computer where I had something more important to look into."Malcolm!" she screamed. "Are you even listening to me? I can hear you typing!"Jesus Christ! What the heck did this woman want from me? I simply called to make sure Marilyn was in the house safe and sound and that she wasn't being affected by the things on the news but somebody was gatekeeping my own daughter."Would you please give Marilyn the phone now?" I tried again. I was already having a massive headache and her attitude wasn't helping."No," she said firmly. "You're not going to speak to my daughter until you tell me how you'll address this issue-"I hung up."Fuck!" I glanced around my office,
CAROLINE It only took two hours before the Internet was blowing up again. Susan paced back and forth in my office as she stared at her tab.“No, no, no,” she chanted. “Just look at this! This is a disaster.” “Look at what? You won't let me look at the phone." she had confiscated my phone and my laptop. “You've been through a lot in one day,” she said. “You don't need to see any of these stupid things.” “Just hand it over, Susan,” I rolled my eyes from where I sat behind my desk. “I can handle my own mental health.” I believed. How bad could it be? She sighed and succumbed, handing over the tab. “Thank you,” I looked at the first headline and my jaw dropped, “Oh!”I scrolled and scrolled, each headline worse than the last. “Oh my–” “See?” She groaned. “Apparently a reporter caught her outside and decided to hang around, hoping he could get a free shot when he noticed us too. He caught the whole thing.” 'Mistress and Marilyn Collide: York Family Feud Takes Center Stage" 'Yor
