MALCOLM
FLASHBACK I folded my arms in my robes as I watched her set the table. The way her hands fumbled, I could tell she was nervous. She was a hotel staff and she was assigned to my room. The way she moved so fast, I knew she couldn't wait to get out of here. "I'm all done, sir," she mumbled and stood aside, keeping her eyes on the floor. I didn't say a word as I took my time staring at her instead. Her black hair was swept over one side of her face, falling on her shoulders and as usual, the brown short sleeve and pants uniform looked beautiful on her body. "Caroline," I called her name on a sigh as I loosened my tie. "Why won't you talk to me?" I didn't like her silence. Especially when I knew she had something to say. Her lips were trembling and her eyes were filled with tears. "Come here, Caroline." But I end up moving close to her and grabbing her chin. She tried to look away but I didn't let her and it only made her cry further. Her shoulders trembled as she sobbed and I tried to wipe her tears but more kept coming. "Caroline, what's wrong with you? I don't like you acting like this," did someone threaten her? The sudden silent treatment pissed me off all week as I couldn't figure out why she wasn't talking to me. "You lied to me!" she said, hitting my chest with her tight fist. "Your name is not Malcolm Allen Grey. You're Malcolm York and you already have a family. You've been deceiving me all these months that you're a salary earner when in fact you own the company you work with. You even have a daughter-" "Now, hold on, let me stop you there, love," I cupped her cheeks to stare into her eyes. "What do you mean I lied to you? I didn't lie to you about anything. My assistant checked into this hotel with his name and I only just used it that one time because it was an emergency. I needed to change my outfit and he knew a hotel close by." "The only reason I kept coming back was because of you," I wanted to kiss her and forget about all this. "That was three months ago," she said. "We've been close ever since and you didn’t even… you didn’t even think to tell me. Fine, what about your family?" "Yes, I have a daughter-" "UGH!" She tried to push me away but since I was a much bigger man, it didn’t work so she could only glare for me to let go of her but that won't work either. The minute I laid eyes on her in this shabby excuse for a hotel, I had grown possessive ever since. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to scare you away," my gaze softened and for a moment, I felt terrible for keeping that away from her. "I was going to tell you-" "When?" she snapped. "When your family hates me for keeping you away from home? Is that it?" "You're not keeping me away from anyone, Caroline," I corrected. "What's wrong with spending time with you?" "You're here four days a week," she said. "Four days! What time do you have for your family?" "The days I'm not here. Look, Marylin is with her mother for four days and that's when I'm here. The rest of the days I'm not here is when I spend time with her. You're not taking me away from anyone," I assured her and I saw her visibly start to relax but the doubt still lingered in her eyes. "Can we just move to kissing already?" I tease, trying to lighten the mood. She glances at my lips before she looks away, a little blush on her cheeks. God! I loved her! How responsive and eager she was for me. She was like my perfect little soulmate. "You're rich," she pointed out with a loud gulp. "That's how I buy you those expensive stuff. Now you don’t have to complain about me saving," I chuckled and tried to pull her into a hug but she stopped me with her palm. "You're out of my league. I'm not going to delude myself," she said, looking me in the eye. "I know how rich families are. They don't mix with people like me." "What rubbish are you saying?" I frowned now, her words were getting on my nerves. To think I would let her stay away from me, she was better off dreaming of meeting the real Santa! "You're only using me, right?" her eyes were glassy again with tears. "When you're done using me, please let me know so I can move on too. I won't be mad. I-I'll understand-" "Caroline-" "You're only here for a good time and you're gonna return to your own world. I understand but please… just tell me when you're done with me-" Tired of hearing her fucked up theory, I pulled her into a kiss. She's caught off guard but she didn't push me away. Instead, she's gripping my suit tight like she's afraid to let go and she's crying as we kiss. My heart tightened and ached in response to her words. "How can I ever let you go?" I was throwing her up and her legs wrapped around my waist. "You're mine forever, Caroline. I love you so much." "I love you too." ** PRESENT DAY My brows knit at the fond memory and I keep my eyes closed. I can still see her smile and hear her soft voice and her moans that hunt my dreams. I promised to never let her go yet when I open my eyes, she's never by my side. "Sir, we're here," the voice of my driver interrupts my sweet nightmare that I'm forced to open my eyes to the harsh reality of a world without her. I look out the window and see a few people heading to the main hall with a wide smile on their face. I too would have to act like them and pretend like I'm alright when all I want to do is find my runaway bride. A figure looms over my window and without taking my eyes away from him, I say to my driver, "Give us a minute." He steps down immediately and my bodyguard gets in the front seat. "Did you find her?" I break the silence as I stare at the back of the seat. "No, sir." I sigh heavily causing my shoulders to drop. Another bad report to ruin my week. "Even if she's out there somewhere, she hasn't used her name in the last five years," he hesitates but I already know what he's going to say. She's not dead. She cannot be dead. Caroline is not allowed to die while I'm still in this world. Maybe my karma is to live in this world knowing I'd never find her. How… torturing and rightfully deserving. “I'll get back to you,” is all I say and he steps down from the car. I turn to pick up the document beside me and I look at it. Another divorce paper to correct the wrong I did the last time. “Fuck! Where are you, Caroline?” I whisper like a silent prayer. If only she had stayed on the house I bought in her name after the divorce. That was the plan. To keep her where I could find her but now she's gone- poof into thin air. She's punishing me. I meant it when I said she was mine forever. Why did things happen the way they did? Everything I did… was for her… I open the door and one of my bodyguards held it open as I step out. Enough feeling sorry for myself. I button my suit jacket and climb the stairs to the hall. Everyone is already seated when I walk in and Louise is linking her arm in mine, showing me off as her trophy husband while all eyes are turned to us. She doesn't know what's coming for her later and I can already imagine the tantrum she'll pull once she knows. Her father- Edward Quinn who is also my father-in-law, smiles brightly at us from where he stands beside his mother- the chairman of the company he so badly wants to inherit. She's delivering her speech with her lazy eyes and bored look like she could be anywhere else but here. It's rare to see Madam Quinn attend events like this and since the press are gathered, it's safe to assume that perhaps she's ready to handover to her son, Mr. Edward Quinn. Well, lucky Bastard! No wonder he's grinning from ear to ear. “You're late,” Louise says after she leans into me with a smile still plastered on her face. “You said you'd be here before Dad starts. I had to stand awkwardly by myself and everyone thought we were having problems at home.” She wants to argue and this smile is only a façade. “Aren’t we, Louise? Just smile like you always do and put on a show. It's your entertainment anyways,” I dig my hands in my pocket as I take my seat at the front where it's been reserved as the husband to his only daughter. “… since everyone believes I'm already too old and I should step down,” Madam Quinn says as she rolls her eyes. “I have decided to heed everyone's warning. I don't think my office desk is a good place to die.” The crowd chuckle at her words while her son is dying from the anticipation. “But before I do that, I'll have to make sure that the board is familiar with them,” she says. “Allow me to introduce my successor,” she says and Louise grips my hand tighter. “You're finally going to get all that you want. That partnership will be yours and when the company is mine, I'll give it to you, honey,” she stares at me with a smile but that soon freezes when her grandmother says something foreign. “My granddaughter,” There's a murmur amongst everyone as they all turn their eyes to Louise. Even her father is staring at her in shock. “Caroline Quinn.” Her name isn't Caroline… who did Madam Quinn refer to? We all turn our heads to the door where Madam Quinn has her eyes and a woman in red heels walks in. My eyes widen in shock as she steps out. The slit in her gown reaches her thigh exposing her fair legs and her red lips are pulled in a small smirk. Louise has frozen beside me but that's the least of my worries as I slowly rise to my feet and the others follow with a round of applause but I'm too stunned to clap or even think. I blink over and over but the image doesn't change. The face is the same. The woman is familiar. I'll never forget that face even if it kills me. “Caroline,” I whisper. My ex wife has reappeared.MALCOLMMy jaw is still hanging loose as I watch her hug Madam Quinn who is wearing a large proud smile. I'm not the only one in shock as Edward is frozen at the scene watching his mother welcome someone else to his rightful position."W-W-What is the meaning of this, mother!" Edward screamed, frowning at them both. "This is ridiculous! Who is she? You only have one grandchild-""Shut up, will you?" Madam Quinn glared at her older son and only son, might I add. I still can't take my eyes off my ex-wife. Her skin is glowing in that red dress, her neck is bedecked with white pearls and beautiful earrings. She screams money and luxury. Her eyes are easy as she stares at Edward with a taunting smile on her lips. When she walks forward, I can't help but take a loud gulp. She has always been sexy but right now, her sexiness exceeded the charts. Even her steps carry grace and class."Uncle Edward," she says much to my surprise and everyone else's. "It's such a pleasure to finally meet you-"
CAROLINEWhy does he stare at me with so much… anger in his eyes and why does it make my heart pound?I stare back, unable to break contact. Those eyes are piercing, enough to have one's feet glued to the floor. His whole face is scowling and I can't pinpoint why.It almost looks like he knows me and has harboured so much hate for a long, very long time.Once the words leave my lips, he's taken by surprise before scowling again as hard as ever and that's when I notice it; his eyes aren't trained at me. They are on my phone. Is it irritation of seeing me again or… jealousy over what I've just said? No, it can’t be the latter. The man staring at me is… handsome. He looks more advanced and even handsome than his photos. His hair has more streaks of grey and there's little to no wrinkles on his face. I would believe him if he said he had Botox done but I know the handsome face I'm staring at hasn't been touched-- unless, of course, by his wife- Louise… that's her name, right?I wouldn't k
MALCOLMThe smirk on her lips doesn't disappear and when she lifts her shoulder in a shrug, that's when I break out of her enchantment. Does she think this is a joke? Weeks of worry that turned into years finally roll into me again and I'm burning with annoyance.I grab her by the shoulder, wishing to desperately lock her up and throw away the fucking keys! How the fuck can she still smile after pulling such a cheap tantrum as that? Feigning memory loss after showing up from her mysterious journey to only God knows where!I can't control my anger but I sure as hell don't grip her too tight. She looks fragile and delicate but when she glances at my hand on her shoulder, she blinks at me with so much class that you'd think she was born for this role."Caroline!" I yell, ignoring the harsh tone of my voice. Contrary to my yell, she doesn't flinch as much as my outburst or even frown. She's watching me with interested eyes, waiting to see what I'd do next. There's something about that loo
CAROLINEI can't get that face out of my head as I go through the rest of the night by my grandmother's side with a smile plastered on my face. I have to wear this smile and act like I don't want to disappear into a hole and hide inside a hole but I've long decided that I'm way past hiding from my problems.I still bear the scars at my back to prove that thanks, grandma."Caroline dear," Madam Quinn says and I turn my neck to give her my attention. She's not looking at me but that doesn't mean she's not seeing me. "You're stiff, dear.'' Her voice is light and humorous with pride and that makes me tense. "What's wrong?""Nothing at all. I guess I'm just a little tired," I lie. "My head is spinning from all the names and faces I've recorded-""Pay attention to every one of them," she interrupts and sets her levelled eyes on the guests around. "You'll need them as well as they'll need you.""Yes, grandmother."Her lips curl in a smile and she's turning to me to grin, "You are one I have
CAROLINE We're pulling over once we get to the mansion and I step down. "Drop Susan back home safely," I tell my driver and my assistant looks at me with worry on her face while I smile back, my default setting as the car drives off. I hear his footsteps before I turn to see him storming towards me. Once he gets closer, he grabs my shoulders and he looks concerned immediately. "Are you alright? Did you get hurt?" Malcolm asks, searching my gaze with worry in his face. His expression is foreign to me and that concern in his voice but I can't lie, they do make him look very good. Now all that's left is for him to drop on his knees crying and pleading for all-- ah, let's not get carried away. I hope my poker face is okay. "I'm fine," I take a step back and his arms fall from my shoulders. I draw in a deep breath, it's hard to catch a break from his touchy hands. "You didn't need to come all the way here," I tell him. "I already called the cops-" "I got here faster," he points out w
MALCOLM"Master York, welcome back-"I storm into the house, ignoring my workers standing by the door to welcome me back. With my fist clenched and teeth gritted in annoyance, I don't bat an eyelid their way."Sh-Should I set dinner for you, sir or would you prefer it in your study?"I can't forget the way she looked at me when I pulled her so close. I'm half pleased that I was able to tear her mask even if it was for a moment but as if she had been programmed, she wore it back and acted like nothing happened. That darn woman! What's with her attitude; The silent treatment and the expressionless face?"Miss Marilyn slept off while waiting for you to return, sir. Would you like to have dinner with her?"Why the heck did I kiss her? I couldn't stop myself. The woman who has haunted my dreams finally appeared in the flesh, it was impossible to keep my hands to myself. Touching her shoulders wasn't enough and pinching myself didn't feel real-- what felt real, though, were her soft lips an
MALCOLMI barely got any sleep last night. After Marilyn mentioned that, I had to clear her doubts about her mother and I but we never got anywhere since Louise returned home and they both spent the night in Marilyn's room."Fuck," I rub my tired face as I look out of the driving car. I didn't expect my daughter would remember Caroline but she wasn't exactly too young when they met.She was only eight when I married Caroline and up until she turned eleven, the two never exactly got along.Caroline never mentioned this to me though. Marilyn's attitude was just impossible to ignore. I wonder if it was my mother feeding her all those things or if it was Louise brainwashing her but she never got to know how sweet Caroline could be or even give the poor woman a chance.Like a Quokka, Caroline would simply smile through it. I close my eyes as I try to picture the smile on her face but all I have are fading memories replaced by this new poker face."We're here, Mr. York," at my driver's word
CAROLINE Tearing my eyes from Malcolm's angry face-- he's been getting real mad and unable to hide the hate he has for me-- I turn to my secretary and arch my brow at her. "I-I'm sorry, I tried to stop him," Susan stuttered with tears in her eyes. Poor thing! She must've been terrified when he barged in. Susan hates confrontations and anyone who tries to challenge authority. She hates standing up to people and is easily frightened but she's a damn good secretary nonetheless. "Caroline?" Kris calls through the phone and I suddenly remember I was still talking to him before this beast of a man barged in. I want to walk away when I see Malcolm reach for me from the corner of my eyes. I smack his hand off my arm and offer him a little smile. He's stunned by my reaction that he does nothing as I head to the table and end the call. "Ahem!" Mr. Williams cleared his throat, drawing my attention. "I'm sorry, can we please reschedule? I'd like to have a talk with you some other time when i
CAROLINEI ate in silence. The food was tasteless on my tongue. Malcolm had numbed my senses and I couldn't even think straight. That was the most shocking thing I had ever heard in all my life. The nurses knocked before I could say a word. They helped me sit so I could eat and removed the needles from my arm.My stomach chose that time to rumble and they wasted no time in thrusting the food to me, offering to feed me if it was a hassle to feed myself.Malcolm was at one corner of the room, silently watching me eat. I still couldn't find the words to say to him, but I couldn't help thinking that he carried all that burden himself.Once we were alone again, I set the spoon down and looked at him.“What happened to the kids?” My voice was small and quiet.“Emma and Ethan are the only ones left.”My heart broke and I raised my chin to hold his fierce gaze. All I saw was guilt and a broken spirit.“What?” I couldn't even recognize my own voice, I was close to tears.“When they found out I
MALCOLMThe sound of the gun pierced the hallway but her scream was what made my heart tremble.“Caroline!” I rushed to her side as she collapsed, caught her before she could crumble to the floor and pressed my hand to her side to stop the blood.“Oh my god! Oh my god! Y-You shot a customer,” Emma whispered. “Y-You broke the rules!”“I-I wasn't aiming for her!”Did he just stutter? I turned to the Enforcer and he staggered in his steps. He looked tense, afraid too. His demeanor was completely off and his whole aura was terrified.“She's losing a lot of blood!” Ethan's voice caught my attention and I cupped her face, tears streaming down her wide eyes.“You're gonna be okay. I'll make sure of that. Emma, get the fucking medic to my room right now.” But she didn't move, she was too shaken from the sight of blood and from the situation.“Shit! Ethan! Take Emma out of here and get me a fucking medic now!”He sprung into action, pulling her wrist and dragging her out of the hallway. I gath
CAROLINEDing! The soft sound of the elevator sliced through the thick silence but it wasn't quite enough to pull me out of the shock I'd been thrown in.To think I was divorced on a dare was shocking to hear and almost impossible to believe but the look on Malcolm’s face was confirmation enough.“Well, we hope you're having a wonderful time with Louise. She's a keeper,” he pulled the chains and the girl jerked, groaning in pain. That woke me up.I couldn't get lost in my own past and allow such atrocities to happen right before my eyes.I looked at the girl to find her trembling. Her body was covered with marks and cuts. It was horrifying to look upon. He stepped out of the elevator, holding the chains like he was walking a dog.I moved forward but Malcolm grabbed my wrist and I snapped my head at him.“No,” he warned with a tight jaw and pleading eyes. This wasn't just about her, this was about…“Let go,” I whispered. “She needs help.”“You don't know what you're getting yourself in
MALCOLM“What do you mean by she's at the hotel?” I gripped the wheels and made the next turn. “How did she get in?” My heart drummed twice as much. How the heck did she get in? She wasn't supposed to find out about that place. I made a U-turn as quickly as I could.Louise and Marilyn would just have to wait for when I get back to scold their asses for what they've done.“Where's Ethan and Emma? I want them assigned to her, got it? No one else goes near her, do you understand that?”“Yes, sir. Are you on your way here?”“On high fucking speed, Britney.”It just had to be Patterson! That old bitch couldn't resist sending new souls to the devil's harem. It was a good thing it wasn't a weekend but then that didn't mean there wouldn't be anyone there to see her.“What the fuck are you getting yourself into, Caroline?”I imagined her clueless face filled with horror when she finally realized it wasn't just a normal hotel. There was a reason that the hotel was off the grid. It was the devil
Trigger warning.CAROLINEBe shameless.Have no fear.I played the words over and over as the elevator dinged. I smoothed my hand over my tennis skirt. It was too short in my opinion but it was already too late to get something different.According to them, the “game” was starting.Everyone was playing golf on the field and apparently, I had to participate in something. I couldn't just waltz in here and stay cooped up in my room even if I wanted that.“You're doing great,” Ethan whispered beside me yet his voice was full of humor. Apparently, these two were my personal… uhm… help. Emma had used the word “slave” without a care in this world but I didn't want to refer to them as that. They were human beings.“You'll learn,” was what she said when I opposed her reference to herself. Ethan mentioned to ignore her, she had a weird sense of humor.I folded my skirt in my fist as the elevator dinged and we stepped out. It was still bright outside and the weather seemed great for a sport but
CAROLINE “Cancel my plans for the afternoon, Susan. I have somewhere important to be.” “Miss. Caroline, please don't do anything rash. Also, why are there photos of you leaving the restaurant with the Patterson siblings? Did you… you didn't try to-” I slowed down the car when I got closer to the security check at the big black gate. I could barely even peep inside. The two security guards walked out from their corner and approached my car with a doubting face, glancing at each other as they approached me. “Susan,” I gulped. “I'll call you back. Handle things while I'm away,” I hung up before she could say another word. I was nervous for some reasons. “Deep breaths, deep breaths, Caroline.” One knocked on my window and bent his knees to be on my eye level as I lowered the window. “Wrong way, Miss?” he asked, arching a brow. I looked at the gate and shook my head, “No, no I'm supposed to be here.” His black eyes were sharp and icy. It pricked my skin and goosebumps broke out all
CAROLINEIn a few minutes, Louise and her family were the least of my worries. News came from an unknown source that Malcolm was close to completing his proposal for Miss Patterson. All hands were suddenly on deck as everyone had to race against time and it dragged on for some couple of days thanks to my special uncle trying to make my life a living hell. His team and my team were under so much pressure for the project and he never hesitated to spite my work. He found fault everywhere and would throw it in my face so I ended up doing the same. It was a tug of war every time we settled down for a presentation, trying to know which team came up with the best proposal. At the end of the week, I was drained, tired and sick of him. I wanted to kick it all away and just end things by smashing his head on a wall somewhere.I knew he was trying to frustrate my efforts and it worked. We both knew that Patterson had the final say. She could end up picking Malcolm's project over ours but we wa
MALCOLM"She's a fucking bitch and now everyone can see it too. She went there on purpose! That's Marilyn's favourite spot for lunch after school hours. She went there to try and manipulate my poor baby and you're not gonna do anything about it?" Louise rants came through the phone on my desk and I glanced at it and back at my computer where I had something more important to look into."Malcolm!" she screamed. "Are you even listening to me? I can hear you typing!"Jesus Christ! What the heck did this woman want from me? I simply called to make sure Marilyn was in the house safe and sound and that she wasn't being affected by the things on the news but somebody was gatekeeping my own daughter."Would you please give Marilyn the phone now?" I tried again. I was already having a massive headache and her attitude wasn't helping."No," she said firmly. "You're not going to speak to my daughter until you tell me how you'll address this issue-"I hung up."Fuck!" I glanced around my office,
CAROLINE It only took two hours before the Internet was blowing up again. Susan paced back and forth in my office as she stared at her tab.“No, no, no,” she chanted. “Just look at this! This is a disaster.” “Look at what? You won't let me look at the phone." she had confiscated my phone and my laptop. “You've been through a lot in one day,” she said. “You don't need to see any of these stupid things.” “Just hand it over, Susan,” I rolled my eyes from where I sat behind my desk. “I can handle my own mental health.” I believed. How bad could it be? She sighed and succumbed, handing over the tab. “Thank you,” I looked at the first headline and my jaw dropped, “Oh!”I scrolled and scrolled, each headline worse than the last. “Oh my–” “See?” She groaned. “Apparently a reporter caught her outside and decided to hang around, hoping he could get a free shot when he noticed us too. He caught the whole thing.” 'Mistress and Marilyn Collide: York Family Feud Takes Center Stage" 'Yor
