Seven years have passed since that night and her father's mental health become worse. Andrew got much more impulsive and nervous. Staying at the Graysons' ranch had turned out to be a good thing, at least it had offered Isabelle plenty of places to run and hide when her father was acting like a mad man. Her father's company, which was on the verge of bankruptcy before the accident, was sold to Chris Grayson. A good amount of money got into Andrew's account, enough to buy for both of them security and comfort. The thought of having so much money was always soothing for Andrew.
The other thing that was bringing him a certain peace was a crazy idea that he was having for a few years now and that he let slip to Isabelle in one of his ‘good’ moments. He was trying to push her toward William, Christopher's son, telling her that he would make a good husband to her. Yes, he was a very handsome, intelligent man, but William didn't care about her and Isabelle didn’t care about him, not that way. In truth, she wasn’t interested in falling in love and she didn't want to get married. Love wasn’t always the cure for everything, love didn’t save her parents. She was fine all by herself; she was all right living without love for twenty-three years and she will continue to do so. She didn’t need a man in her life.
She got off the horse and looked at the countryside around her. Everything was so wonderful, especially the ocean that unveiled in all its splendor right before her eyes... Spring had just arrived, a season filled with changes in nature and in people. Also, in Isabelle’s life there were some changes, but not the right ones. Her father situation got even worse; he had become a tyrant. For him, remorse or pity had no meaning. But despite all this, Isabelle had chosen to stay by him. She was an intelligent woman and understood that between the accident that happened seven years ago and the radical change in her father's personality there was a sort of bond. She adored her father before the tragedy hit them and, of course, she couldn't leave him now when he needed help. Her loyalty towards her father won’t vanish now. Besides, where could she go? She had no money and Andrew kept all their money in the bank. He didn't let Isabelle take a job because in his mind, her job was to take care of him and the house they were living in.
Being close to her father became a harrowing and, at times, a very dangerous thing. His crises were extremely frequent now. Everything was a good reason for him to get mad: the food was too hot, the things on his desk weren’t placed as he wanted them, somebody moved his favorite armchair. Sometimes he would scream at her, sometimes at Lucy. And, in order for him to stop yelling, both would choose not to argue with Andrew.
Isabelle started pacing back and forth, stopping every now and then to admire the vastness of the ocean. She was feeling so good here, she didn't want to go home, not yet anyway. This was her favorite spot in the whole ranch. Here, in front of the ocean, she was feeling different, here she was the real Isabelle, the one who was always smiling, who could freely express her point of view without feeling the fear of being insulted or beaten, who was able to walk with her head held high, who could look without feeling ashamed in people’s eyes, Here she wasn't the same Isabelle who was crying every time in front of the mirror while counting the bruises that her father's ‘love’ left on her body.
She looked up at the sky and saw a flock of sparrows flying across the sky, playing with each other, enjoying the freedom that flapping their wings was giving them. Isabelle followed with her finger a playful little bird. She was so envious of this little sparrow, of her freedom, of her happiness, of her joy, of the wonderful way she had to enjoy this fantastic spring day. Isabelle shook her head and felt a strong need to sit down, to stay there a little longer.
“How I wish I could fly...” she whispered wiping quickly her tears. “I'd like to fly away from here, somewhere where I can start my life, without fear, without violence, without tears. I'm twenty-three, I should do something meaningful with my life... But if I’ll go away, what will happen to my father? Who will take care of him?”
In spite of her personal tragedy, Isabelle managed to finish high school top of her class and she hoped to continue her studies at a good college, but Andrew slapped her told her that it was useless, that a girl so dull, insignificant, and... unintelligent like herself should stay at home and stop dreaming impossible things. But she didn’t let her father’s words bring her down. Every evening, hidden in her room, she read every single book in her father’s library. Andrew took away her laptop, deciding that she won't be needing it anymore. She had everything on that computer: her poetry, her thoughts, her music... her entire world. After that, he took her books and diaries and burned them... almost all of them.
But even so, she kept doing her thing. The drawing tutorials she had always seen on YouTube would’ve helped her a lot, but even so, she learned to draw all by herself. Isabelle was also speaking extremely well French, Italian, and Spanish. Apart from these little things, Isabelle loved to sing. She had always loved it. Now, she wasn't overly good, but Isabelle was able to carry on a tune without problems. Her father didn't know these things. There were so many other things about her that he didn't know since Isabelle had learned to hide from him this part of her character. She kept his temper and ideas at bay just to avoid another fight with him.
But even if she was trying to live her life the best way she could, Isabelle hadn’t lost hope of seeing her father return to be at least half of the man he had once been. On one of the few trips to town, Isabelle had consulted a doctor about Andrew's frequent headaches and he told her, from what little he had understood from her descriptions, that the lack of oxygen in the brain and the strong blow that he had falling down the stairs, had had devastating effects on his way of thinking and relating to others. The brain had suffered bruises that for the moment were small and almost invisible, but, in time, they might be the cause of his death. The doctor told her that he would like to see Andrew, in order to give a correct diagnosis, but when Isabelle, with so much care and attention, suggested to her father to see the doctor, Andrew became more violent than ever and she had to run and lock herself in her room. From that moment on, Isabelle avoided mentioning anything related to his headaches, as every crisis risked killing him.
Isabelle got up from the grass and decided it was time to go back home. Her father could wake up at any moment and there would be trouble if he would found out she wasn't in the house helping Lucy with all the chores. She approached her horse, but her eyes were caught by a man who was riding a magnificent black horse. It was an image so... perfect The rider and his horse were in such harmony, it was something Isabelle never saw. She had learned to ride once she got to the ranch, but she was all right. She learned to do it because it was the only way to escape the ranch when her father had his outbursts.
Looking at the stranger, her heart began to beat extremely fast. He changed direction and started riding towards her. Isabelle got scared and got into the saddle trying to get away from this place as quickly as possible. She couldn't stand there and talk to a stranger. The horse followed Isabelle's lead, but the man cut her off and started to stare at her. His eyes were like ice, they were piercing her soul and freezing her blood. Isabelle tried to leave, but he blocked the road again. This man, his way of looking at her while going around her in circles, was annoying her a lot.
"What are you doing?" She asked nervously. "Get out of my way and let me go immediately," she said, blinking nervously. The man continued to stare at Isabelle, measuring her from head to toe, and began to smile. The color of his hair, his face, his piercing grey eyes... his smile. Isabelle had a strong feeling that she already saw him. But she didn't know when or where. She tried to escape, but he stopped her again.“Who are you? What do you want from me?” she yelled, keeping her scared horse at bay."The last time I saw you I didn't notice your temper... You’re so fiery, I like it!" He replied and started to laugh. “I remember you werequiet as a mouse and so... submissive. Come on, stop pretending, you know very well who I am. As far as what I want f
Marie Grayson was staring at Isabelle from the living-room’s window. The girl was very friendly and quite playful with her granddaughters and the girls immediately took a liking to her. She was very glad that Andrew had accepted her proposal. His young girl had to get out of the ranch and build a life far from her despot of a father. She remembered Isabelle at her mother's funeral. She was so lost, so timid, almost afraid to open her mouth and speak out. Initially, Marie had thought that all this sudden shyness was the result of her mother's loss. Isabelle had never been a shy, silent, fearful girl, but quite the opposite. Marie knew Michelle, she used to visit the Baldwins often, and sometimes Isabelle kept them company. Isabelle that she knew was a girl that was talking a lot and she always had arguments to support ev
Billy went to the window to take a closer look at Isabelle. He couldn't deny that the seven years that had passed had turned her into a gorgeous woman. She had beautiful dark long hair that she held tight in a ponytail, she was tall, with a fabulous body even though the clothes she wore wasn’t doing her justice. A pair of jeans, a checkered shirt, and a pair of white sneakers weren't exactly the right clothes to highlight Isabelle Baldwin's beauty. Billy smiled when he saw her be tickled by Frannie and Diana. Her laugh was so wonderful, so genuine. Isabelle would have had his full attention.“Son! Billy!” His father's voice brought him back to reality and stopped his train of thoughts about the new babysitter. He put his serious face on again before turning to look at his parents.
After they changed their clothes with beautiful pajamas, Isabelle accompanied Marie and the girls to the kitchen where they chose what they wanted for dinner. Marie asked the cook to prepare dinner for two more people and then joined Isabelle at the table. While Frannie and Diana finished eating, the two women were drinking iced tea waiting for them. The little ones kept talking, making Isabelle smile."I'm so glad you agreed to stay for dinner, my dear," Marie said, putting the dirty dishes in the sink. Isabelle got up from her chair with the intention of washing them, but stopped immediately and sat down again, totally surprised by the amused stare of Marie. She realized that this wasn’t her house, that she didn't have to clean the kitchen or wash the dishes."Excuse me... I always do this at home...
Angry as she had never been before, Isabelle abruptly pulled away from him. He let her go without saying another word. She wanted to tell him a lot more, but Marie's voice stopped her. She didn't want to be seen by her in that state, so Isabelle tried to calm down."Oh, my dear, you are here... Come on, your father just arrived... Ah, but I see you've already met Shawn, my nephew." Marie walked up to him and let him give her a hug. "How about you have dinner with us this evening?" she asked, adjusting his hair."Aunt Marie, first I need to take a shower and I'll join you as soon as possible," he replied, continuing to smile at Isabelle.“Very well! Hurry up, please!” Marie took Isabelle's hand and practica
When Isabelle finished singing, she realized that nobody was talking, not even her father. She raised her beautiful blue eyes and, very close to her she met another pair of eyes that were staring at her in complete awe. She hadn't noticed that while she was singing, he had moved and was now near to her."You're such a good singer, Isabelle," he said stunned almost whispering those words. “Your voice is so stunning.”"Shawn is right, my dear," Marie added in a tone full of enthusiasm. “Sweetie, you are a young woman full of surprises.” But she wasn’t paying attention to the other comments. Apart from Shawn's tender words, she heard nothing else. Someone cleared his throat and Isabelle looked in the direction of her father who was
Isabelle entered the kitchen and surprised Lucy while she was preparing breakfast. She tip-toed to Lucy and hugged her, making the woman startled."One day, you will give me a heart attack with this little game of yours!" she scolded Isabelle with feigned anger. “You’d better sit down and eat something before starting your day at the Graysons.”“No, Lucy, the car sent by Marie to pick me up will be here at any moment. Besides, I'd like to go away before father wakes up. I am sick and tired of hearing him saying the same things that he had been telling me for almost two weeks now. Today I don’t want to hear ‘You have to impress Billy Grayson! You must marry Billy Grayson!’, I just don’t,” Isabelle said imitating Andrew's voice. “I can't stand the sound of these words an
Frannie and Diana were finishing breakfast when Christopher came down with the suitcase ready for the trip to England. He kissed his wife and the girls and he was about to get into the car and go to the airport, but the loud noise made by a sports car stopped him. Everyone turned in the direction from which all that noise came. Christopher shook his head when he saw his nephew getting down from a black Ferrari, walking all full of himself towards the small group. The girls ran to their uncle who leaned down and hugged them, then he said hi to Marie and Christopher. As usual, he didn't consider Isabelle."Uncle Chris, have a good trip, and let me know what can I do to help you from our main office," Shawn said shaking his hand. “I’ll go right now to San Francisco. If you need me, you'll find me there.”“Very well, son. I will keep you informed about everything,” his uncle said and the
She felt slightly embarrassed; Shawn's words made her shiver a little, catching her off guard. She tightened her bridle and the horse became nervous. He took a few steps back and almost threw her on the ground. Totally worried, Shawn jumped off his horse and, quickly, calmed Isabelle's horse down. He continued to caress and talk to him slowly until the animal stopped moving and being agitated. Isabelle was still shaking even though her horse was much calmer. Shawn helped her get down and held her hand as they walked away from the two horses that began to graze, unaware of what was going on. Isabelle had been so impressed with the way Shawn had handled the situation, with his self-control, that seeing his pale face and feeling his hand shaking as he held onto hers, left her perplexed."My love, are you a
"You are not capable of doing such a thing, my angel," he replied smiling tenderly. "The way you give in to my every caress is as real as my love for you." Again, they started riding next to each other. Shawn's opinion of her had left Isabelle totally surprised. She smiled softly and her gaze moved to the ring he had put on her finger. She was officially engaged to Shawn and was about to become Mrs. Grayson. She loved him very much, that's why she felt the need to tell him the story of her father's will. He had been so honest with her; it was time for her to do the same thing."You know, the engagement ring I gave you, belonged to my mother. It's one of the few memories I still have of her. I am happy to see it on your finger.""Oh, I didn't know... Shawn, are you sure of what are we going to do? You marry
When she heard the words'my future wife', Danielle felt like she was about to faint... No, she couldn't lose him! She wasn't ready to let him go! Besides, Shawn was a gentleman, she knew he wouldn't do anything to her. Those were only empty words meant to scare her off, but she already had an idea of how to respond to him. Danielle got up from her chair, took her bag, and started walking to the door. Before getting out of his office, she turned to him."One way or another, you will come back to me! This doesn't end here!" she added and went out slamming the door. Shawn took a deep breath and tried to go back to his usual self. Danielle had always been such a drama queen, so it was better not to pay any more attention to her. He had other things to do and then he wanted to go back to his Belle and spend the day with her. He pulled out
Whistling and smiling happily as never before, Shawn entered his office and sat down at his desk. He still had some small details to fix, he had to meet with the interior designer who had to prepare his apartment for Isabelle's arrival, and then he would return to his beloved. Shawn heard loud voices outside his office. Someone was arguing... it was the voice of a woman who, unfortunately, he had immediately recognized. It was Danielle and she was asking to enter Shawn's office right away. Shawn got up abruptly from his chair and went to get her and take her inside before making a spectacle of herself."What the hell are you doing here, Danielle?!" he said in a low voice. He took her by the arm and ordered her to enter. Shawn closed the door behind them, but when he turned to her, Danielle was close to him, trying to kiss him. "What are you doing? Are you insane?""You can't leave me
Isabelle raised her head and moved away from Lucy enough for the woman to look her in the eye and understand that she would never choose to marry Shawn if she wasn't desperately in love with him."Lucy, I really love Shawn Grayson. I have always loved him, since that day, at my mom's funeral, when I saw him for the first time. I would never be able to do such a thing; you know it very well. You taught me better than that!" She got up from the couch and went to the window. Still worried, Lucy continued to look at her. Isabelle was like a daughter to her and didn't want her to make the wrong choice."Dear, until yesterday, you were saying that you didn't need a man to make it happen...""And I don't, Lucy. I made my choices, but what I didn't unde
Isabelle stared at him rather perplexed, unable to fully understand what Christopher Grayson was saying to her."After what happened to your mother, your father and I, we took our separate paths, and I pushed away from my head those plans to bring our families together. But your father didn't, he always tried to make me understand how right you would be for my son, Billy." Chris smiled slightly embarrassed. "When your father called me a few weeks ago to remind me of this understanding that we had, I told him that this isn't our decision to make, that my boys and you were no longer kids, but adults who could choose for themselves that one special person.""That's why my father always insisted that I marry Billy, that's why the whole clause thing..." Isabelle added, getting up from her chair quite suddenly."What clause ar
Someone knocked lightly on her door and Isabelle smiled. She already knew who that person was, she had no doubt about it. The beating of her heart was proof that on the other side of the door it was the love of her life. She opened slowly, without making too much noise, then she took his hand and pulled him into her room.“I’ve missed you so much! After last tonight, staying away even for a few hours makes me insane!” he whispered. “Oh, my love...” She had heard those words a thousand times last night, but now, in the light of day, it was as if he was saying them to her for the first time. A strong emotion took hold of her body and her mind. Isabelle approached Shawn and passed her arms around his neck pulling him towards her. He smiled sweetly, got closer, and kissed her lightly. Shawn's lips linger
Isabelle remained speechless. His mouth let out those words and Shawn's eyes showed to her exactly the same thing. For a few seconds, Shawn looked at her, totally lost in those blue eyes, in the emotion of the moment, in the love he was feeling for her. Then he began to gently caress the curves he hadn't forgotten for a moment. Isabelle's body surrendered in front of his sweet attack. Isabelle undressed him and he willingly let her do it."I'll take care of you now," he said helping her to sit on the bed. Shawn closed the door and returned immediately to her. He leaned towards Isabelle and kissed her breasts. “Brace yourself, my love, because what I want to do to you will take us a lot of time...” Shawn's hands returned to tease her warm skin, they got lost in the ocean of her silky
She wanted to touch his face, to remove all that suffering that he was feeling. Shawn had hurt her in a dreadful way, but she didn't stop him. She loved him then as she was loving him now, in this instant. Shawn was so helpless, so sad, so desperate, so... human like she never saw him before.“I'm oknow, Shawn. I’m much stronger and I feel all right,” Belle replied smiling slightly. He looked at her and Isabelle saw tears in his eyes.“Yes, you are. And it's so good to see you standing on your feet, ready to move on, to build your new life. I just hope you will include me too... Marry me, my beautiful, brave, wonderful Belle!” Hearing his spontaneous proposal, Isabelle
