Seeing the way she suddenly guarded herself, Kevan's heart ached for her. It was so strong that it overpowered the sadness he felt at her distrust of him.

Larissa froze. She suddenly felt like crying again, and she looked down to hide her teary eyes.

"You've talked things out with Mr. Rogers?" Lewis brought in a plate of peeled apples. He gave her one that had not yet turned brown.

Larissa bit into it, and the sweet apple juice sprayed out. They stained the white sheets.

"I guess so," she mumbled as she chewed the apple.
