NICCO
I checked my watch impatiently. Hope struck me as the type of girl that was early to everything and I hoped she was. I valued promptness.
I didn’t even know why I was doing this. My wolf was thrilled but the businessman and Alpha in me knew that this was a really bad idea. I was mated to a human and the sooner I rejected the mate bond the better it would be for my business and for my Pack. I had heard stories of other Alphas being mated with humans and their Pack embracing the change. Most of the time it worked out, the human Luna a meek head of the Pack. Usually in those cases, the Beta’s wife was the one with the real power. That wasn’t going to work for me. My Pack was also part of my business, and I needed a partner that would be ruthless and know the games of the profession. I sighed. This was a really bad idea. I should have just walked away.
Her black van pulled up, five minutes early and she slid out of the driver’s seat. I could see that her hair was wet and that she was wearing clean leggings and a tank top. She looked around, curiously, and then checked her phone for the address.
I gestured to Jenna, the owner of the business. She was a thirty something, blonde Lycan who owed me a favor. I had financed her business and waved a lot of the fees that are usually associated with taking out a loan from my pack, and in return she occasionally provided me services.
Jenna opened the door and stuck her head out. “Hope?” she asked with a huge grin.
“Yes?” she asked, more of a question than a statement.
“Come on in! We’re expecting you!” Jenna held the door wide open, and Hope tentatively walked in. I could tell she was nervous, probably wondering what she had gotten herself into. I saw her look at the ornate dresses on the wall and then down at herself, a look of discomfort on her face. I stood up and she turned, seeing me for the first time.
“I wasn’t sure you’d come,” I said. She smiled shyly.
“I was intrigued,” she admitted. I couldn’t help the smile that came to my lips.
“Good,” I said, softly. “I am, too.” I walked over to her and lifted a strand of her wavy hair. “Did I rush you?” I asked. “Your hair is still wet.”
“No,” she said with a grin. “I showered at the gym before coming here. As someone so rudely pointed out earlier, I was very dirty.”
I chuckled softly. She was sassy and I liked that.
“Jenna is going to be helping you pick out a dress for tonight,” I said. “I will wait over there.” I pointed to a few couches that were set up. Vinnie was sprawled on one, checking his phone. I sat on the other and picked up my laptop. I wanted to take a look at that spreadsheet again.
Jenna gave Hope a perky grin and then looked her over. “Size four?” she asked. Hope nodded.
“Yes.” She leaned in towards her and whispered. “I’m on a budget. Any chance there’s something here under a hundred dollars?” Even though she was whispering, my wolf hearing heard it. I looked up and caught Jenna’s eye, giving her a slight nod.
She winked at me and then turned to Hope. “Don’t worry about it, hun. Nicco is covering it.”
Hope looked uncomfortable but didn’t argue. I wondered what she was thinking.
Hope followed Jenna back into the dressing area and I could hear them talking. I ignored them and opened my laptop, pulling up the spreadsheet that has been driving me crazy.
After twenty minutes, the murmuring changed and then Jenna poked her head out of the curtain, a mischievous smile on her face. “You’re going to love this,” she told me. I closed my computer and stood up, my wolf at fever pitch.
With flourish, Jenna yanked back the curtains and Hope came out looking shy. Jenna had dressed her in a royal blue sheath dress that was low cut in front, but high enough to be demure. The material skimmed her body instead of clinging to it, accentuating her curves. The straps were thin strands of crystals that looped over her shoulders. The crystals were mirrored in the clip that Jenna had used to fasten her updo, leaving tendrils of chocolate colored waves to frame her face. Her makeup was light and very natural, calling attention to her beautiful blue eyes that were currently fixed on my face, waiting for my approval.
“Doesn’t she look stunning?” Jenna asked me pointedly. I knew she thought I was being rude. I couldn’t take my eyes off from Hope and I was literally speechless for a moment.
“Beautiful.” I said the word softly and Hope smiled at me, pleased.
“We’re done in here. Just in time to make your reservation, I think,” Jenna said. I didn’t move, just examined Hope, noticing the little details like her tiny earlobes and her long fingers. I could feel myself getting aroused just looking at her. I realized I wanted this woman. I wanted her bad.
I forced myself to calm down and I went to her, extending my hand. She took it and her fingers were cold. Nerves.
“You have my card?” I asked Jenna. She nodded.
“I’ll send you an invoice in the mail,” she said. I didn’t reply, just led the way out of the boutique.
“Thank you for all of this,” Hope whispered, looking up at me with her beautiful eyes. I nodded.
“My pleasure. I wasn’t sure you would have anything suitable for dinner tonight.” I looked over at her van, knowing that she didn’t. Vinnie had reported to me everything that was in it.
“Shall I follow you to the restaurant?” she asked, opening the bag that Jenna had given her and fishing out her keys. I put my hand on her arm.
“Your van will be safe here for the time being. I’ll bring you back after dinner.”
She paused for a second and then nodded. “Okay,” she agreed. I was pleased. I was worried that I was going to have to be firm with her.
Vinnie pulled up in an SUV, driving up on the curb. I saw Hope’s eyes flash with amusement at his parking job, but she didn’t say anything. I opened the door for her and helped her into the car. The dress shifted and Hope’s leg peeked through the slit. She had beautiful legs, and they were endless. I had a vision of them wrapped around me and I swallowed, pushing down the thought. I needed to control myself.
I ran around to the other side where Vinnie was waiting to open the door. I slid in beside her, noting that she had already buckled her seatbelt and she was sitting primly with her ankles crossed. The sandals that she was wearing were a work of art, crystals covering the straps. She had gorgeous ankles, and I took a moment to admire them.
“You like the shoes?” she asked, noticing where my attention was.
“They’re beautiful,” I said. So were her feet, but I felt that it was probably not the right time to say that stuff.
“I’ve never had anything like this before,” she said, with a girlish grin. “Thank you.” She turned her ankle back and forth, admiring the sparkle. “I don’t know when I’ll wear them again. But they’re fun.”
I smiled at her, and she leaned back against the seat relaxing. I took the moment to really study her. Her dark brown hair was pulled up into a simple knot, and it looked like it was naturally wavy, but not curly. She had delicate features but a strong jaw. It was a unique combination and I really liked it.
She was also very tall. I would guess at least six feet tall in her bare feet. The sandals that Jenna put on her added a few inches to her height, but she was still below my 6’4 frame. She was slightly built, though, and had a willowy strength and grace that I admired.
She turned to look out the window and I gave a small sigh. I was intrigued by little miss Hope. Joey had done some more digging and had so far come up with nothing more. She had no social media and no credit history. Her car registration was up to date and the van was registered to Hope Smith. I was assuming that was an alias. I was hoping dinner would shed some light on this mysterious woman.
HOPEVinnie pulled up to the restaurant and I gave an involuntary gasp. The restaurant had set up a red carpet of sorts with thousands of fairy lights strung up and lighting the way to the entrance. It was a busy night, and the walkway was crowded with couples in varying degrees of fancy dress.Vinnie opened my door and Nicco walked around the car. He put his hand on the middle of my back where the dress dipped lower, and the feel of his palm on my skin did strange things to my body, sending heat straight to my core. I involuntarily shuddered as a vision of Nicco kissing me came to my mind. I looked over at Nicco hoping he didn’t notice my reaction. He had a slight smirk on his face as he led me to the entrance. The maître d' greeted Nicco by name and led us to the back of the restaurant in a little secluded alcove. Nicco waved the host away and held my chair. “Thank you,” I murmured, looking around at the opulence. The restaurant was decorated in the typical Parisian style,
NICCOI watched Hope try to lick the chocolate off from her face and I could feel myself stiffen in my pants. She was so sexy. My wolf was right below the surface, yelling at me to take her and mark her right there in the middle of the restaurant. I handed her a napkin and she scrubbed at her face, her cheeks red with embarrassment. For some reason, this endeared her to me even more and I felt my smile widen. My watch dinged and I looked down. Vinnie had just pulled up. I stood up and helped Hope up. She was a little wobbly and I looked at her with concern. She really didn’t hold her alcohol well. It was not safe to take her back to her van. “Thank you for dinner,” she said primly. “It was very good.”“It was my pleasure,” I said. And it was. She was fun to be around, sexy as hell and smart. I enjoyed dinner. She stumbled a little and I put my hand around her waist, supporting her. She moaned a little and my wolf went crazy. She can feel the mate bond, Lupo screamed
NICCOI woke to Hope moving. The sun was up and bright and, when I squinted at my watch, I could see that it was after ten. I rolled to my back and watched her, waiting for her to completely wake up. She stretched and she opened her eyes a little bit before they flew open, looking at me with her long lashes framing them, her hair fanned out over the pillow. “Oh my God!” she said, sitting up, pulling the blanket off me. She saw my bare chest and gasped again.“Oh my God!” she repeated, pulling the sheet up and over me. She looked down at herself. I chuckled.“No, I didn’t undress you. It’s a shame. That dress is too pretty for wrinkles and I’m pretty sure you are hiding a spectacular body underneath.”She gave an audible sigh of relief and then looked at me with narrowed eyes. “Why aren’t you dressed?” she asked.“Relax. I’m wearing boxers.” I couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the look on her face. “Would it be so bad to wake up naked next to me?”She bit her lip and
HOPEMy day turned into a whirlwind. I had given directions to a department store where I could find something cheap and comfortable to wear today, but Nicco nixed that plan. He took me to another boutique shop, and he picked out the outfit he wanted me to wear. I grinned at myself when I saw my reflection in the mirror. He had chosen a white, sleeveless polo dress with a blue belt. I had a pair of white sandals waiting for me when I came out of the dressing room. I had taken the time to braid my long hair over one shoulder and Nicco spent a moment playing with the heavy plait. I put my phone in the new bag he insisted on buying, and tucked my hand in his before leaving the shop.“Thank you,” I said, again, for the umpteenth time. Nicco looked pleased. “I like buying you clothes,” he said. I laughed.“Why?” I asked, genuinely curious. I didn’t really care about clothing, probably because I never had the money to care about the clothes. He looked at me sideways. “You have
NICCOI haven’t had a day like today in a long time. Maybe ever. It was a lot of fun walking Hope through the stores and picking out clothes for her. She had no idea how beautiful she was, and she had no idea of the effect she had on the people around her. There was a genuine sweetness about her that drew people to her. My sweet Hope. She was also so innocent. Lupo and I wanted to know all her secrets, the good and the bad, and protect her from them. We wanted to be the one that explored her not-so-innocent side that I caught glimpses of, like when I kissed her. I knew that there was a wild woman underneath, and I wanted to be the one to tame that. She had disappeared into the bathroom when Vinnie sidled up to me. “Alpha?” he asked, his tone slightly tentative. I knew that he was going to ask me something against his better judgement. “Yeah?” I asked. I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.“What are you planning with Miss Hope?” he asked. I raised my eyebrow at him. He
HOPEI am pretty sure that flying with Nicco ruined flying for me for the rest of my life. I’ve never flown before, but I have heard horror stories about having to show up two hours before the flight, wait in line at security for an hour, have a pat down while your luggage rummaged through, and then run for a flight with little to no leg room, bad drinks and a seatmate that has body odor. We had none of that.Vinnie drove us down a private road and parked in front of a private terminal. He opened my door and then Nicco came around, taking my elbow. Vinnie handed the keys to a man who came up while another porter proceeded to unload the luggage from the back. We went into the private terminal where we were handed a glass of wine by the hostess of the lounge. We waited in comfortable, reclining chairs for about twenty minutes. Nicco pulled out his laptop and did some business while we waited, but I sat, looking out the window and holding my glass of wine. The hostess approached
HOPE I lay back, limply, watching Nicco. He gave me a slow wink and then reached beside him, grabbing his laptop. I stifled a groan. I swear the man never relaxed. I stayed in the half-reclined position with my feet on Nicco’s lap and dozed off, waking when the flight attendant nudged me. I sat up, putting my seatbelt on over my now wrinkled dress. Nicco looked distracted; upset over something he saw on the computer. I wondered if I would be able to help but decided to ask him at a different time. The plane landed gently, with barely a bump. I was pleased, having envisioned a landing with a fiery stop at the end. I stood and tried to smooth the wrinkles out of my dress before following Nicco down the stairs. I slipped on the last step, but Nicco caught me. “Whoa. You okay?” he asked, setting me back on my feet. “Yes,” I lied, my ankle throbbing. I had turned it when I stepped and then put my weight on it. It was a stupid mistake. Nicco looked at me, shrewdly, and I p
NICCO I settled Hope in the back passenger seat of the car and then took the seat directly in front of her, sitting next to the driver. I was very private and not many people knew where my personal residence was, so I anticipated having to provide directions. I also needed to make a few more phone calls. I didn’t want to find any surprises at my apartment. Angelica was surprise enough, and she was not a good surprise. Angelica was a mistake. She was beautiful and eager, the daughter of a Beta, and enjoyed partying. Five years ago, she would have been the perfect companion for me. I met her one night when I let my guard down and went back to my old stomping grounds, spending a night like I used to. I woke up in her bed and she had been hard to get rid of ever since. I called my Omega housekeeper, waking her. “Yes, Alpha?” she answered the phone, sounding drowsy. “Hello Eloise,” I said. “I’m sorry I woke you.” I was fond of her and liked having her around. “No probl
HOPE POVBeing behind the wheel of my van was like coming home to an old friend. I knew her idiosyncrasies and I loved them. The engine responded to me and the familiar hum lulled me. My mind began to wander. So much has happened in the past few months. It was hard to remember that, just a few months ago, I was working as a mechanic. Since then, I found out about werewolves, had several adventures, found my mate, had a few bad encounters and have changed as a person. I feel like I am a completely new person, but the old Hope was still inside me.I put on the blinker and slowed down. My map said that there was a campsite up to the left. I had headed northwest to try to avoid Nicco’s Pack, and my map said I was hundreds of miles from them. I should be safe enough to spend a night or two here while I tried to get my head on straight and to come up with a plan.I found the road in the dim light and drove the rough terrain that winded through towering pine trees. It opened up t
NICCOI started by gathering all of the residents of Moon Tower. I wanted answers and Lupo was pissed. We lost our Beta and I wanted justice. Not as bad as Charlie did, though. The wolves began arriving, most of them confused, especially when we ushered everyone into the basement. It was dank and dark, but it was the only place that was large enough for what I wanted to do.“They’re all here, Alpha,” Caleb said, checking the last wolf off the list. I walked to the far end of the room, my pack members nervously shuffling out of my way. Charlie was already standing in the front of the room, his arms folded across his chest and glaring at everyone. “This meeting is to be kept secret,” I shouted in my Alpha voice. I could see everyone’s neck bowing to my authority, exposing their vulnerable necks to me and showing submission. I hated giving Alpha commands. It reminded me, and everyone else, of my father’s realm where Alpha commands were given multiple times a day. They should o
NICCOI raced over to Vinnie’s apartment. Despite his Beta status, he chose to live in an apartment building that I owned and used to provide living accommodations to members of our pack who worked at my companies. He had at least taken one of the top floor apartments, using the excuse that the view was amazing. It was.I didn’t wait for the elevator and, instead, took the stairs two at a time. It helped Lupo work off some of the nervous energy and gave me an outlet for mine. We made it to the top in record time and I gently knocked at the door. There were no police, no crime scene tape and no techs dusting for fingerprints. We handle things in house. There would be no outside involvement. And when I found out who did this, there would be no trial, no jury. Only swift justice.Charlie opened the door, his face white and his jaw set. He stepped aside and I slipped in, closing the door behind me. Until we knew what we were dealing with, I didn’t want to let anyone else know w
NICCOI frowned at my watch. Hope was late and that wasn’t like her. I was glad she wasn’t early as usual, though. I didn’t want her running into Lucia. What a hateful brat. My phone chirped and I grabbed for it, a smile playing on my lips. It was probably Hope, begging for forgiveness because she got caught up in some sort of shopping expedition with her new friends.“Alpha?” It was Charlie and his voice sounded strained.“Yes.” I could feel my stomach tightening in a knot. Charlie rarely sounded this way. Nothing bothered this wolf. He and I grew up together and the wolf was cold.“It’s dad. He was killed.”Lupo reared up inside me and it took all of my self control to push him back down. I knew why he felt this way. He had immediately felt for our bond with Vinnie, the tether that held him to me, and we couldn’t find it. It was broken and the only way it could be broken was either by banishment or by death. I had lost my Beta.I threw some money on the table blindly,
Chapter 70HOPENicco irritated me beyond belief sometimes. After all his lectures to me about lying, he goes and does it to me. Our mate bond must be getting stronger because I could tell he was lying. I was so angry, I was growling under my breath. When I caught myself, I giggled a little bit. I was picking up on Nicco’s habits.I had a good morning showing Mario and Gia around and getting them settled into their own apartments. Nicco had been kind enough to get them apartments at one of the many buildings that he owned. They were small, but they each had their own, which was usually unheard of. “This is amazing,” Mario gushed, coming back in from the little balcony. His apartment consisted of a tiny kitchen, a small living area and a bedroom with the balcony. “I have never had this much space before.”Gina’s apartment was almost the same, though I had picked out one that had a larger bathroom and more closet. Girls have to stick together and there are just some things t
NICCOMila’s attitude shifted and her face got dark. “You’re never around anymore,” she complained.“What did you do?” I asked, suddenly tired. I always felt guilty about Mila. The attack that killed her parents had taken place right after I became Alpha. I had been warned that it was coming, and I was too arrogant to listen to anyone. We had found Mila in the rubble, her limbs mangled and her little body limp. It had taken the talents of multiple healers and doctors to get her to where she was. “I just wanted to get your attention,” she said, the tears starting. I forced my emotions to harden. She was manipulating me, and I knew it but my guilt made it easy for her to do so.“Who?” I asked. Mila shrugged. “I don’t know. It came in an encrypted message.”“And you thought it would be a good idea?” I asked, dumbfounded. Mila was never one to consider the consequences.“They only borrowed the money. It was always put back,” Mila said, pushing out her lower lip. “I should k
NICCOHope and I stayed up the rest of the flight, trying to figure out what the signature meant. She was the one who finally did. She had gone to the bathroom and had come back, her eyes tired. Before she sat down she stopped with a start and softly chuckled, staring at the paper.“We’ve been making this harder than we needed to,” she said.I looked at her in confusion. “Yeah? If you have figured it out, I’d like to know. It’s driving me crazy.” I was irritable. She grinned and took the pen from my hand, writing over the top of the random letters and numbers that we had been working on, transforming them into one word. BITE.“I’d guess the hacker is a wolf,” Hope said mildly. I looked at the word, my vision clouded. I knew who went by that name and I couldn’t believe it. Hope picked up on my fury.“Do you know who this is?” she asked.“No,” I lied. I didn’t need her to know until it was over. I was going to confront this wolf and find out everything. I would get my ans
Chapter 67HOPE POVI woke up with a start, not sure of what had awakened me. I was laying in the only private bed in the back of the plane with Nicco. I listened carefully and his breathing was still even. Whatever woke me up didn’t wake him.The only noises I could hear were the normal noises of the plane. There was no turbulence. So what had awakened me?I carefully rolled on to my back, trying not to waken Nicco. There was a moment when his breathing changed so I lay still until it went back to normal. Then I slipped out of the bed.I used the bathroom in the dark, not wanting to waken him. Something was still nagging at me. It was like I had forgotten something very important and my brain was trying to remind me.I sighed. I wasn’t going to go back to sleep anytime soon. I slipped out of the bedroom in the back and into the main part of the aircraft. Vinnie opened one eye and looked at me, going immediately back to sleep. Mario and Gina didn’t move.I reached up into
Chapter 66HOPE POV“I don’t care what he said,” I said, impatiently. “I am sick and tired of staying inside. The beach is out there calling my name.” I tried to get past Mario who was blocking the door to the hotel with his body. He looked terrified of me but I knew he was more afraid of Nicco, so he was doing what he could do to keep me in the room. I didn’t blame him, but it still made me mad.“Luna, we could watch a movie,” he suggested. I shrugged, sighed and acted like I was going to go back to the sitting area. He visibly relaxed and I took that opportunity to dart around him and dash into the hallway. “Sucker,” I heard Gina tease Mario behind me. I took off running for the elevator, giggling as Mario ran behind me, trying to reason with me. “Please, Luna Hope. Alpha is going to kill me,” he begged.“Tell him I forced you,” I suggested. I turned just in time to see him roll his eyes. “Just for that, I’m not coming back with you,” I said, jumping into the open eleva
