The moment those words escaped my lips, I immediately regretted them. I thought that it probably would have been much better if I had just stayed quiet.

How did I end up saying something so lame?

“I guess it's been a while," I continued hesitantly while feeling awkward.

"I guess you've gotten a chance to catch up with your sister. Hopefully, it makes you feel better," Bradon replied casually.

"Yes, it's great that she's back. We had a lot of time to catch up and talk," I said before trailing off. Silence settled in between us again, and I found myself fidgeting in my seat.

"I think Diana has probably realized by now that I've ditched her to handle the event on her own," Bradon said before letting out a soft laugh.

I turned to stare at him at his unexpected words and reactions. I honestly didn't think that Bradon would abandon both Diana and his duty to act out his role as Anthony just like that.

“I'm sure that she can handle it," I replied shortly before trying my best to smile a

Perhaps he had accepted that that was how things were supposed to be. Although I should have been relieved that he and I were now on the same page about this matter, I found a stirring sensation in my chest, and soon enough, I discovered that I had started to feel agitated and then angry. My sense of frustration only grew when I could not pinpoint the real reason behind why I was feeling that way. I stared at Bradon's expressionless face as I wondered what he was thinking. As silence stretched on between us and the night wind howled as it blew against my face, I realized that I was extremely annoyed by how unaffected he was, as if I was expecting some kind of bold or even aggressive reaction from him, just like the previous times that we had discussed this matter."You should have gone to the event instead of leaving my sister behind. I'm sure that you would have had a much better time spending time with her than simply just sitting here with me with nothing to do," I said while sound

Suddenly, I heard the familiar soft sound of the door being opened. Some light crept in through the crack of the door as my sister slowly opened it. I knew from the gentle way that she handled her entrance and the soft sound of her footsteps as she came inside that the person who had entered the room was none other than my own sister, and she was making a conscious effort not to wake me."You're back," I said, trying to keep my tone light. "You're not asleep yet? It's very late already," Diana said while sounding a little surprised. "I was waiting for you to come back. How was the event?" I asked as I tried to sound innocent. I apologized to my sister silently that she had to handle the event alone, at least until Bradon turned up. "Can I turn on the lights? Are you about to go to bed right now?" she asked. "I'm not sleepy at all," I replied honestly. It felt like I was too emotionally drained to actually fall asleep for the night."Great," Diana said as she switched on the lights

"You know, if there's anything that is bothering you or worrying you, you can always let me know. I might not be the best advisor, and I might not be able to solve all of your problems, but at least I can lend you an ear," she said before offering a sweet smile."What do you think should happen?" I asked before I could stop myself. "What do you mean?" Diana asked as she cocked her head slightly to the side in wonder. That was when I realized that my question didn't seem to make sense and was totally out of context. I never got around to disclose my plan to collaborate with Desmond so that he would help me get my revenge on my own parents. I took in a deep breath as I tried to steady my rattling nerves. "What is it?" Diana asked after seeing me pause and fall silent for a moment."I can't forgive them, and I'm not sure that I feel sorry about how I feel…" I confessed truthfully."Who are you referring to?" Diana asked as her brows drew together in a frown. I didn't like seeing such a

I was quite shocked at my sister's outburst, and I had to admit that I hadn’t expected her to get this emotional. “Listen, after Anthony returns and you marry him just as you're supposed to, then there wouldn't be any need for me to be here anymore,” I told her truthfully while trying to remain calm. I told myself that I was being reasonable and that there was no need to consider how I felt about this."'You can just stay here. If your plan succeeds, it'll be like you have reset this whole country and righted all the wrongs. Why wouldn't you want to live here?” my sister inquired with raised eyebrows. The 'me' in the past probably wouldn't want to live here because I didn't want to see my sister living a happily married life with Anthony, even if that was the plan all along. I thought that I would be able to stop loving him and that I could genuinely celebrate their union; however, I wasn't sure if that was something that I could truly do. In fact, that wasn't even the worst of my c

Usually, Bradon would simply smile before shaking his head to express his regret slightly before handing me something to compensate for the fact that he couldn't let me out of the hospital room. It could be a new game that he wanted to teach me how to play. It could be a deck of cards where he would play a few tricks to entertain me. It might be sweets and desserts that he thought that I might enjoy. I would be lying if I said that his small gestures of kindness didn't help brighten my day; however, as days passed by, even the newest of games began to lose their allure."Yes, I have very good news for you," Bradon said before breaking out into a wide smile."Really?" I asked as my eyes widened and my hands flew to cover my mouth. He's not just saying this to tease me, right?Bradon only continued smiling before he nodded his head a few times to confirm that his words were indeed true. I couldn't believe that I was about to regain my freedom again. Whatever was happening outside must h

I had to say that after he ascended to the throne, Desmond gave off a vibe that made him seem even more mature than before. I stared at his attractive face as I thought to myself that he would indeed make a great king, if only he wanted to be one. Now if only that king would just keep his words and the promises that he made to me, then all would be perfect. “What about my father? Is he going to end up being the new president of this country?" I asked directly."It's a surprise," Desmond replied with the response that I dreaded the most."I somehow knew that you would say something like that," I muttered darkly to express my disappointment."I have to say that your father is actively campaigning for votes now, so you should be glad that your sister is back; otherwise, you're going to be the one who needs to be out there working for him," Desmond said before letting out a dry laugh. "I guess I have you to thank," I remarked a little sarcastically."I can't have you joining him becaus

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   At It Again

**The following morning**"Diana. Wake up, Diana! Don't you have somewhere to go today?" I asked as I reached out a hand to tap my sister softly on her shoulder. Diana didn't even stir in her sleep at first, but then her eyelids began to flutter. I recalled from the night before that there was a very important interview and photoshoot that she had been looking forward to. It had been a while since she had been officially featured on the front page of a magazine, and she was excited about this opportunity. That being said, I had no idea why she seemed to be sleeping in when she was supposed to be up and about and getting ready."Wake up, Diana! You have an interview to go to today and a magazine photoshoot. I also have to get my ass out of the hospital today," I reminded her, in case she had forgotten. Diana wasn't the most diligent of people, but she was clearly responsible when it came to everything that she cared about, and I knew that she cared about this magazine photoshoot. "Wa

I struggled internally for a moment, but I knew that there was no way that I could turn her down. Donna looked so sad and also a little stressed. She was right that getting this shoot right was important in returning her to the social scene. Also, it wouldn't be so great for her to mess up her first magazine shoot after returning to the country. I let out a loud sigh as I closed my eyes when I realized that there was probably no other way out.“This is because of the weather, isn’t it? Is it that time of the year already? I guess it sucks that your allergies never completely went away. How are you holding up? Do you want to take that medicine that you always take?” I asked before letting out a soft sigh.I had failed to realize that it was already that time of year when Diana’s weather allergies would start acting up. Being stuck inside, I had failed to realize that the air outside might have gotten heavier and it had been raining on and off for a few days. Suddenly, I felt slightly g

"What have you done? Have you completely lost your mind?" my father yelled at me immediately when our family was gathered in private. His face was completely red with anger as his voice echoed in the room. My mother looked like she was on the verge of tears, and I could tell that she was more worried about our family rather than her own daughter. "News of your ridiculous and scandalous behavior is now all over the place!" my father continued yelling. As if to drive his message home, his mobile phone began ringing non-stop. One glance at the name displayed on the screen drove my father to the brink before he switched off the phone and threw it onto the floor. My mother let out a scream at my father's sudden violent outburst before sinking down onto the sofa as if she had lost all strength in her body.I took the opportunity to slowly take a seat, and Diana was by my side in an instant. I knew that the best way to brave out this storm was to keep quiet and not let his words get to me.

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Crash and Burn

Not having the experience of being a criminal before, I wasn't quite sure how one was supposed to be treated, but the experiences that I went through might have indeed been close. I thought that I was used to disappointing my parents and the people around me. I thought that I was used to seeing the look of disappointment and disapproval in their eyes before it became a look of resentment and then complete apathy and lack of care. I thought that I could deal with everything without getting my emotions involved because, after all, I was supposed to be used to this kind of treatment, and that was why I was caught utterly off guard by how quickly things escalated.Thinking back on it, my memories were quite blurry. Either it was simply too much for me to take in at the time for my brain to form any clear memories, or it was simply too shocking and too harsh for me to take. Either way, everything seemed to fly by me and over my head.Although every single teacher and the principal tried to

Just thinking that the fool right in front of me dared to say he was in love with my sister, while he couldn't even tell the two of us apart, made my blood boil. It took a lot of effort to repress the urge to reach out and strangle his neck right then and there. I reminded myself that I had a part to play and quite an audience to impress."No... this can't be..." Mr. Malton whispered hoarsely from a distance, stepping even further away from me. I stood up from the table, grabbed his arm, and pulled him back to my side as I glared up into his face."It's actually quite simple to fool you. All I had to do was dress up in my sister's clothes whenever I met you and talk a little more sweetly..." I said, letting out a hysterical laugh. I could still feel everyone's eyes on us as the attention in the room escalated even more than before.Mr. Malton was speechless as he tried to pull his arm away from my grip, but I wasn't about to let him get away so easily."Well, now I guess the secret is

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   The Truth We Chose

I had no idea how Diana managed to keep the girls silent up until that point so that the news wouldn't spread; however, I knew that it wouldn't be too long before everyone in school knew about this illicit affair. We would be extremely lucky if this news did not spread beyond the school walls. Despite the gravity of the situation, Mr. Malton was already ready to make his retreat."What if they don't believe us? I feel so scared. I don't want to be alone, and I don't want you to leave me," I said pleadingly just to see his reaction."You know that I would never do that. It would just be temporary until everything blows over. I promise that I will never leave you. How could I possibly leave you? I love you so much," he declared his love for me boldly. The more dramatic things became, the more I felt that his act of adoration was completely fake. "Leya, you need to help me find a way out of this. Diana simply cannot make this kind of mistake," my sister told me slowly and clearly as she stared directly into my eyes."You're right. You can't afford to make these kinds of mistakes," I agreed solemnly."No one else must find out about this. We have to do something before word gets out because word is definitely going to get out,," my sister stated calmly, and I could tell that she had returned to her calm and collected self."Can't we tell them that they simply misunderstood and that it's not true?" I asked, daring to harbor a little bit of hope."They probably won't believe what we tell them, but they might believe what we show them," Diana replied, and I could tell her mind was made up.Without using any more words, it seemed like an understanding had formed between us, and once again, it felt like it was us against the entire world....**The Next Day**As I pushed open the back door to the building that was supposed to be off

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   The Bigger Problem

The moment that thought entered my mind, I quickly killed it and pushed it out of my mind as if extinguishing a small flame before it would spread and engulf everything. I told myself that it wouldn’t have to come to that and that we could find another way to figure things out.“Does it matter? Why does it have to matter?” Diana asked, and her tone was cold.My sister’s response quickly snapped me out of my thoughts and back to reality. I narrowed my eyes at her as my irritation started to take over.“It does matter! Have you completely lost your mind? He’s our teacher,” I reminded her as I started to truly lose my head over what my sister had confessed to me.Had I known that the person she had been dating was one of our teachers, I would have definitely stopped her. That was probably the reason why Diana decided to keep it a secret, even from me. In reality, I had my own doubts about whether or not I could have persuaded my sister not to pursue her taboo relationship with Mr. Malton

I asked."Honestly, you have no idea just how much I am dying to tell you who he is. But you see, I did promise him to keep it a secret between us... at least for now," Diana said before flashing me a regretful smile."I don't think I will end up liking this guy. He's telling you to keep secrets from me," I replied teasingly."I'll make sure that you're the first one to find out," Diana promised me with a beaming smile."I guess that it's good enough for me that you're happy," I told her honestly."Thank you, Leya. I could tell that Bradon felt restless, even under his calm and collected exterior, and that was probably because he couldn’t wait for this engagement announcement to come to an end. Even though he should have been reassured now that Diana was taking my place at the ceremony, it seemed that nothing could make Bradon completely feel at ease given the situation.“I sincerely hope that they keep it short,” Bradon whispered right into my ear before planting a soft kiss against my temple.I was sure we looked like the perfect loving couple, and perhaps that wasn’t so far from the truth. For the life of me, I had no idea how Diana managed to convince Desmond to let her take my place at the engagement ceremony, but I wa

"So, are you going to get on your hands and knees to beg? How much longer will you keep me waiting?" I asked while pointing my index finger at the empty floor right in front of my feet.If looks could kill, I would have died an extremely painful death, stabbed by the millions of daggers flying out of my father's eyes from the way he was glaring at me. Even when I was clearly his only route of escape from the impending hell that was awaiting him, it was clear that my father felt nothing but hatred for me. I returned his stare with one of my own as I continued pointing to the floor where I wanted them to get on their hands and knees."I'm still waiting. Oh, but if you're not willing, then I'll make sure that some men will escort you out," I said before grinning at them. I could tell that my father was hesitating, and that meant that he was truly considering abandoning whatever pride he had left to get down on his hands and knees to beg for help from his long-abandoned daughter.Time mov
