Gone Missing

**Roughly a week ago**

It all started when I received an unexpected phone call. To be honest, it was also a phone call that I dreaded. After being sent abroad by my family and breaking things off with them, I had not heard from my parents for more than four years. The only person from my ‘old life’ that I kept in touch with was my elder twin sister and that felt like more than enough for me. It was hard but I had moved on with my life and I was working hard toward building what I hoped would be a bright and free future for myself.

“You’re working so hard again today. Don’t stay too late, ok?” Louise turned to tell me with a sweet smile on her lips.

After graduating with a degree in business, I was lucky to have found a job in sales and planning in a decent-sized company in the city. On top of that, I had a very supportive team leader who always looked out for me.

“Thank you but don’t worry about me or the work. I’ll definitely get it done by tonight,” I replied with confidence.

“Honestly, I’m more worried about your health than the work. Make sure you get enough sleep and please keep your diet healthy. Don’t go out partying so often…” she warned before winking at me.

“Sure. I’ll see you tomorrow!” I called out to her as she headed for the door.

Louise turned and waved at me before disappearing through the door. Now that my team leader was gone, I was the only one left in the office. Despite my confident words from earlier, the truth was it would be a very long night for me at the office if I didn’t focus properly on the work in front of me.

**Ring Ring Ring**

The sound of my mobile phone ringing sounded too loud in the almost silent office. I quickly grabbed it only to find out that it was an international call from a number that I did not recognize at all. My first reaction was to ignore it but when I thought that it could be my sister calling me from an unknown destination, I hesitated a little before moving my finger to answer the call. Little did I know at the time that this phone call would be one that would change my life forever.

“Hello?”

“I need to talk to you…” a woman’s solemn voice spoke through the phone after a brief moment of silence.

My blood ran cold at the sound of her voice, and I truly felt that I would have rather seen a ghost than hear her voice. Facing an unknown ghost would have felt much better than facing a cruel ghost from my past. A lump formed in my throat and suddenly my face felt numb. My hands balled into fists as I struggled to get my words out.

Why is my mother calling me? Why is she getting in touch with me now after all this time?

“Mum…” I said in a breathless whisper while still shocked and in disbelief.

“Listen to me. Your sister has gone missing,” she stated coldly.

“What?! Dina is missing? What do you even mean?” I asked while almost shouting into the phone in shock.

“Don’t call your sister with that disgusting nickname. It’s just as I have told you. Diana is missing. We don’t know where she is, and we can’t get in contact with her. She’s been missing for almost three days now. Do you know where she could be?” my mother asked me coldly.

Although her tone was solemn and dry, I could tell that she was hiding a lot of distress under her calm act. Not that I cared at all about how she was feeling. At that moment, all I cared about was the fact that my sister had gone missing. I prayed that nothing bad had happened to her and that she would be found soon.

“How am I supposed to know? I live in a completely different country,” I reminded her without bothering to hide my hostility.

“It’s always you who talk your sister into doing crazy things so I’m just checking if you have a hand in her disappearance this time as well,” she said accusingly.

The truth was, I had never played a part in my sister’s sudden disappearance before but that was something that my parents didn’t need to know about. They could keep blaming me forever and I was willing to take the fall for it as long as my sister would remain unscathed. If someone had to take the blame for everything, I would rather it be me than her.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you but I have no idea where she is this time,” I replied while thinking that I should just hang up.

The worry that I had for my sister stopped me from committing such a careless action. My brows furrowed tightly together as I tried to sift through my memories while searching for clues as to where my sister could be or the reason behind her disappearance. This wasn’t the first time that something like this had happened, and it was highly possible that she would randomly return home after a few days of staying away.

At least, that was normally what would happen…

“Try calling her. She might pick up your call. Make sure that you report to me immediately. We need to find her and we’re running out of time!” my mother yelled through the phone.

Whatever calm front that she managed to put together had cracked completely. For once, I was thankful that I was the only one left working behind late at night at the office because that meant that no one was here to overhear such a melodramatic phone call.

“Call the police. Have you contacted the police and filed a missing person case?” I asked.

“No. You know well enough that we can’t do that...” she replied softly.

For a moment, I completely forgot that I was dealing with a woman who worried more about the family’s social standing and reputation than the life and well-being of her daughters.

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Always There

"We're getting married," I announced bluntly. After his awesome proposal, I learnt soon after that Bradon already had a date in mind for our wedding and it was much faster than I had anticipated. To be accurate, he wanted our wedding to be a week after our engagement. Even more surprising was the fact that he had already made preparations for most of the major arrangements such as the venue. I wasn't exactly shocked to find out that the most prestigious wedding organizer had gotten involved in the process. The first person that I decided to tell in person was none other than my sister. I thought that this sudden announcement would surprise her, in a good way. However, the look of smug satisfaction on my sister's face told me more than enough that she had seen this coming, and probably from miles away. "Finally. Just about time. No, actually, way past the time. I was actually wondering if I would ever get to attend my little sister's wedding in this life time," Diana said before rol

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Celebrating Love

"I love you too. Stay with me, Dahlia," Bradon said almost pleadingly.I had never seen him look or sound like that before and it brought a tight feeling to my chest. No words felt like they would be enough so all that I could do was nod my head slowly in agreement. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into his tight embrace. I couldn't stop smiling as I quickly hugged him back. Just like that everything was clear in my mind and my mind was made up for good. Happiness never felt so simply and the solution to all of my problems naturally came to me. I knew without a doubt that I wouldn't regret the decision that I had made, although there would be obstacles waiting for us in the near future. Whatever may come our way, I knew that we would face it head on together. The sound of applaud and cheers of celebration enveloped us from all directions, and that was when I realized that we were not alone in our own little world. All the missing staff and gaurds that worked in the mansio

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Be Mine

As if providing a feast for my eyes wasn't enough, I spotted shadows of a group of people that slowly emerged into the garden in front of the mansion. Then, it all started. The sound of live classical music flooded the golden-lit garden of the mansion and seemed to transform the entire atmosphere into something so magical. I was never quite a big fan of classical music, but even so, I couldn't deny that the unexpected live performance sucked me in and held me captive. My mood suddenly felt joyous and yet peaceful at the very same time. The parade of black limousines finally arrived at the driveway in front of the mansion. I wondered what was going on, and what was the reason behind such a grand procession in which I seemed to be the only intended audience. Despite all the surprise, there was one thing that was clear to me and that was the man that was behind it all was none other than Bradon. "Bradon..." I whispered his name under my breath as the door to one of the limousines ope

Next I began to wonder what would happen to Bradon and his life now that Anthony was ready to reclaim his life back. Bradon might be less busy, which might be a good thing but something about him retreating back into the shadow of society made me feel uncomfortable. The relationship between the two brothers was far from healed, but perhaps with more time, their open wounds could heal themselves. As for me, I felt a shudder run down my spine as I thought of my future. Bradon mentioned before that he had something planned for us, but he still never got around to sharing with me his plan. Evening had arrived again, and soon I knew that Bradon would return home. "My lady..." Zain's familiar voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I realized that all I had been doing was sitting around idly in the living room as my thoughts consumed me. I hadn't realized Zain's presence until she was standing right in front of me. "What is it?" I asked. The mansion felt empty and eerily quiet in a way

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Well Deserved

"He has to grow up and deal with it. It's just heartbreak for god's sake. He'll move on in no time, you'll see," Diana told me brightly. With no one to talk to about this, I turned to my sister for advice and also hoped that she could help cheer me up. "I don't know about that," I replied, not at all convinced."It's really funny, though. Who would have thought that the one that Anthony was truly in love with all this time was you?" Diana said, followed by a high-pitch laugh. She was clearly having the time of life and enjoying herself all the while I recounted the story that unfolded that day in Anthony's hospital room. I couldn't deny that what happened was pretty dramatic, but that didn't mean that I liked how Diana was reacting. "I don't think it's funny at all. I don't want to hurt Anthony and I don't like seeing the two of them get in a fight," I confessed with worry. "They're two grown men, they will sort things out and get over it. You don't have to worry, and you should

  • Substitute Wife for the Mafia King   Eventual Declaration

"I love you, Dahlia. I really mean it," Anthony whispered to me passionately. "No..." I managed to say in a breathless whisper. I knew that I needed help because there was no way that I could overpower Anthony. His lips were already so close to mine that we were on the verge of kissing. My entire body froze, and for once in a very long while, I was at a loss about what to do. I felt bad for Anthony, and I didn't want to hurt him. However, I also did not want to betray Bradon and my own feelings. I felt the urge to cry my eyes out and wail like a baby, yet I had to hold it in. Once again, I found myself thinking of Bradon and wishing for him to be by my side. If we were together, I believe that there is nothing that we cannot fix and solve. Bradon...Just like my call was answered straight from heaven, suddenly the door to Anthony's hospital room opened. The loud noise drew both of our attention to the man that had hurriedly entered the room. Bradon stormed into the room with an ag
