Chapter Six - A way out

last update Last Updated: 2023-12-20 19:32:35

Isabella's point of view.

"I got something, I got something," Cameron's voice was so loud it woke me up from my sleep before she barged into the room and jumped on the bed.

I tried to turn away but she kept on interrupting me, "I got something, don't you want to know what it is?" She asked, her tone much softer this time.

I was the type of person that got headaches when woken abruptly. Headaches that lasted for days on end and made me sick.

Plastered on a fake smile and looked up at her, "What do you have?" I hoped it wasn't something from that boyfriend of hers because I would literally strangle her if it was.

She smiled back at me, "Well the contract, the lawyers have been looking at it and they discovered the only loophole they could find in such a bonafide contract," Dressed in a fancy pink minidress and the necklace I had gotten her as a birthday gift, Cameron could not have looked more beautiful, "I hope Zachary has brothers or cousins."

I nodded. He did. He had a twin brother with an attitude even more rotten than Zachary. The one person I wasn't allowed to think about or even talk about.

"He has a brother," I said nonchalantly.

Cameron nodded at that, "Well the contract said you had to get married to a Newman, it didn't state which one. You could get married to his father and it would be legally binding," She dropped the paper on my thighs and I immediately picked it up.

And there it was. Circled with a pencil.

'This hereby states that once Miss Isabella Andromeda Wells turns the beautiful age of twenty three, she is to get married to Mr Newman as payment for the loan granted to Mr Wells on this day.....'

I dropped the paper and turned around to stare at Cameron who had walked away from me and towards the dresser where she was skillfully brushing her hair and had a big smile on her face. She had done well but I was still going to get married.

"I don't understand how this helps," I finally said the words that were stuck to the back of my throat.

She seemed to understand because her face softened, "You can get a contracted marriage with another Newman, offer him money or something. Then get divorced after some time," She explained to me, "And then no one would question it and this arranged marriage would be void."

I didn't want to squash Cameron's happiness. She had gone through alot to get this, she had missed her engagement because of me and now she was going to learn that this wasn't going to work.

"Jason would never agree to this, he literally hates me and even if he didn't, I don't know where to find him," I said while carefully folding the paper into a rectangle so I could place it on the nightstand.

"I'm going back to sleep before I get a headache."

Cameron's whispered words were the last thing I heard before I fell asleep.

"I won't let you down."

*****

The chatter downstairs came to a stop the moment my legs touched the last stair. I raised my eyebrow at my mom and Cameron, sitting huddled together in the kitchen.

My cousins sat at the other end of the kitchen and waved hi to me when they saw me. Identical twins and I couldn't even tell the difference between them yet.

"Isabella dear, Cameron just gave me some great news," Mom said once she was done whispering around with Cameron.

I walked towards the refrigerator, "Is it the fact that I could get apparently get married to any Newman?" I asked then picked up a bottle of water and almost drank everything.

Mom smacked me alot when I did this when I was younger. Now, she doesn't even bat an eyelid and waits for me to finish before she continues.

Cameron cleared her throat, "It's a choice Isabella, in things like this, it's good to have a choice."

They were being so unreasonable. I turned to mom because if Cameron wouldn't understand, she was supposed to.

"Mom, I can't ask Jason to marry me. First reason, he's one of the reasons why I left, the second reason, he's a jerk and third reason, I can't even find him. Perhaps he is even halfway across the world," I hoped I wasn't shouting because I felt like I was shouting.

Sincerely, I had a headache because of this topic.

"I think I'm going to go out, this house wants me to become crazy or something because I don't get what you don't understand."

No one tried to stop me. The house was suffocating already which made me so happy because I was leaving tomorrow. I would come back after the fashion show though. I couldn't leave my mom alone and I had a wedding to plan.

Outside wasn't dark yet and the neighbor's children were out and about, playing with their bicycles and toys. Oh. To be a child again without the responsibilities of an adult, wandering through life without having thoughts of how to get out of a marriage.

I could see my dad somehow. He was everywhere. Every piece of flower I touched, the sky. I could see him guilding me as I walked around. I placed my finger on the tree close to our house before taking a seat on the root of the tree, watching everyone walk by.

I must have looked like someone crazy. Who sits under the tree in their pyjamas at this time of the day? Plus my hair was a rats nest kept in a messy bun.

A little kid from the opposite building ran towards me, she had the smile of an angel and kind of reminded me of my dad. Everything reminded me of my dad though so that wasn't much comparison.

"You're really sad," She said before taking a seat by me, "My mom always said I should show kindness to sad people all the time," She giggled when she was done saying that, like she felt she had said something funny.

Her enthusiasm was contagious so I wasn't surprised when there was a smile on my face.

"Why are you sad though?"

"Because my friends want me to do something stupid," She gasped, showing me the cute little gap in-between her teeth, "But the stupid thing is something that can actually help me," I added at the end.

She nodded, "If it's something that can help you then do it. Your friends must really care about you."

"They do."

She didn't say anything else because suddenly her mom was calling out for her and she had to run back home. That didn't stop her from giving me a kiss on the cheek though.

My time outside had not being unproductive after all. I could think better now and see things in a new light. I didn't even get the headache I thought I would have by now.

My decision was made though and I would be more than happy to tell Cameron and mom so they would leave this alone. I was the one getting married, not them. And if I had to get married to Zachary so my family wouldn't go down in debt or lose another life then so be it.

He wasn't a bad man when he kept his mouth shut. And from what I heard, his sex was good.

Cameron wasn't in the kitchen when I came in. Just my mom going through the family album, she was a bit teary eyed though and caressed some of the photos.

"Mom, I can't do what you guys are asking me to do," I announced my present with those words.

To my mom's credit, she wasn't startled. She flipped that page to another, one where I wore a tiny swimsuit while dad pursued me around the beach.

She sighed deeply, "I have a way to get you out of this, something your dad did without even consulting me and now you're rejecting it," She got up from the chair and walked towards me.

My mom was a pretty woman. Too pretty for my dad, I wondered how he got such an attractive woman to fall inlove with him and even got married to him. That beauty was still there and it shone, even when she was mad at me.

"We were invited to a family dinner with the Newmans this evening. I heard Jason would be there so get ready," She left the ghost of a touch on my cheek before she turned around and walked away.

She wasn't there when my dad sold me away so she wants to make sure I get out unscathed.

A family dinner at the Newmans though was the last thing I expected. No need to argue against this though, I was pretty sure mom would lend me one of her dresses.

The knock on the door interrupted me. But there was no one outside when I opened it.

Just a new package and inside was the prettiest gown I had ever seen. From Newman again.

Family dinners at the Newman house where they invited people over and it was bound to be a disaster were not my sort of events to attend.I watched Zade pin a cute little pink bow on Amethyst's ponytail, he knelt down so he was close to her height and she could see his eyes. Isabella's point of view.Personally I thought Jason looked horrified at the thought of getting married to me. But when I thought about it later on, anyone would be horrified at the thought of getting married to their twin brother's betrothed. He turned to look at his side, like he couldn't look at me anymore."I can't get married to you Meda, I thought that was what your betrothal to my brother was for," He raised his hand upwards for dramatic effect perhaps, "I don't care about you enough to take you away from your future husband"Jason had always been the blunt twin, the one who said whatever he wanted without the fear of anyone or even the risk of punishment. I didn't expect him to agree immediately but his words weren't even encouraging enough to continue.I took a seat by his side and stared at the stars too. Perhaps I might annoy him into an agreement or something.Jason was also a champion at the silent treatment because we didn't talk for the next thirty minutes, just sat dow

Isabella's point of view I travelled back home the next day after my second attempt of begging the brute went wrong and the realization that he would rather eat charcoal than get married to me for a few months sank in.Cameron wanted to stay behind but I convinced her to come with. She still had a boyfriend that was supposed to have turned to a fiancee few days ago and would be royally pissed off at me."I love your mom and the small town," Cameron told me when we were on the plane, "If I had grown up in a place like this, I don't think I would ever leave," She continued, yapping on and on about how much she loved our neighbors and how the dinner at the Newman's had gone so well.Until I couldn't take it anymore."If you had actually grown up in that stagnant place and your dad forced you into an arranged marriage just because of money then you would have left too....." Isabella point of view.Annabelle walked around the shop, checking out each and every outfit with the little girl trailing behind her.The one Jason drunkenly told me was my daughter."Don't listen to him, he says the most stupidest of things when he's drunk" Zade had suddenly appeared out of nowhere, like he had been trailing us all along.I watched them, even as I moved around the store, talking to whomever I saw and listening to what they had to say. The advice they had to give and some snobbish ones who believed my brand was beneath them yet purchased more than a few dozen."Why are you guys here anyway? I don't remember inviting any of you?" Isabella's point of view.Cameron came home later that day, her face lit up in a big smile and her hands filled to the brim with bags that contained so much clothes.Stress shopping. Angry shopping. Happy shopping. Whenever Cameron was in a mood, she went on a shopping spree. Clothes, cars, jewelries. And her mom made sure she got the best."Look who the cat dragged back home," I commented from my spot on the kitchen counter, where I had spent the last few hours working on a design.Cameron released a groan, she placed her bags on the counter and walked to the fridge to get a drink. She didn't even acknowledge the fact that I was in the room.I rolled my eyes, "You're so childish, this is childish," I commented, then ripped the piece of paper I had drawn on out of the book, scrunched it all up and threw it away. She scoffed, "You must be in a mood, I shouldn't try to say 'I want to be in your shoes' at the moment," She mocked, her voice going all high pitched as she tried to mimic me

Isabella's point of view.Zachary turned himself in to the police the next morning. We woke up and he was nowhere to be found, all he had left was the simple note he wrote about where he was going to and what he was going to do.Jason drove us back to the penthouse, the news reporter made another news concerning the issue and it was almost like all was well in the world again. No one cared about Cameron being in the hospital for alcohol and pills poisoning, no one cared about the fact that Jason would have been in jail yesterday if not for the intervention of Zade. The dude appeared the moment I thought about him, all smiles. His face looked the same to everyone so they missed the ugly bruise at the side of the head."What happened?" I asked him once we were close to each other. He almost choked on his drink, "What do you mean?" He asked, after he dropped the wineglass on the table while staring at me intensely.I nodded my head towards the centre of attraction, "What happened there?

Cameron sent the anonymous tip. Cameron heard our conversation then."How does he know this place?" I asked confused, my eyes darting around because I felt like Zachary would appear out of any of the walls.Jason sighed, his hand moved to the back of his neck. A sure sign of nervousness."Mom knows about this place. I couldn't believe mom was the female helping him, I mean, I can't even understand it. She probably sent that tip to the police or whatever," Jason said, he was trying to appear strong but his eyes gave how tired and heartbroken he was, "I don't understand why she would do this to me.""Because she wasn't the one, she didn't do this."He looked at me, confusion was written all over his face, "What do you mean? She was working with Zachary to get...."I didn't get a chance to explain it to him because someone

Isabella's point of view.Jason's phone ringing was the alarm that woke us up that morning. Jason tried to find his phone with his eyes still still firmly shut, and missed multiple times. When I couldn't take it anymore, I found the phone myself."Hello," I said, a bit harshly and much more rudely than I intended, "Why are you calling my husband at..." I had to remove the phone from my ear so I could look at the time, "...six in the morning. He's asleep."Jason's hand squeezed my thigh, "I love it when you're so dominant," He said, his voice was laced heavily with sleep. No one said anything at the other end for a whole minute. I wondered why I didn't end the call at that point."Haven't you seen the news? Jason's face is literally everywhere and I'm pretty sure the police would be on his tail soon," Zade's voice was the next thing I heard, it felt like he was talking from the other side of the room, "Get out of that penthouse and run."And then the call ended. Isabella's point of view.It took two whole days for me to become a semi normal human again, even though I had issues. It took two whole days for me to get rid of all the alcohol I had in my system, without going for another. It took two whole days to promise myself that I would continue to be happy, because Amethyst needed a mother. Not a drunk angry woman who couldn't forgive herself. The journey back to self love wasn't going to be an easy one, but I would do anything for my family.Mom and Jacqueline travelled from Paris back to town once they heard I would be receiving visitors now. They were so happy to see me and so was I, to see them.I wasn't even that surprised that Jacqueline had dyed her hair pink."When you have a family that wants you to be the best, the best wife, the best kid, the best of anything, you learn of new ways to disappoint them," She said then leaned in to continue the sentence, "Especially if you didn't make them traumatized when you were a teenager."That

Jason's point of view."You'll be discharged on probation due to the only witness having a faulty memory," The lawyer told Dude during our short visit to the prison, "That's enough to get you released on probation at least."That happened the day after we found Meda. I was still a bit out of it, the whole conversation, the reward I promised Dude if he helped me find my wife. I just wanted to go back to the hospital.Dude stood up and shook the hand of the lawyer, "Thank you very much. I appreciate it," He said, the grin on his face was so wide and bright. It made me almost want to smile as well. Once the lawyer was gone, the smile disappeared from my face."That lawyer is from one of the best firms in the US. I'm sure he would do his best to get you out of here so don't worry," I sighed, before I got up from my own chair and stretched my hand towards him.Dude was a slim guy. Isabella's point of view."What happened to you?" Jason asked the moment he saw me, as I walked into the penthouse. My face was swollen, my lips had bruises all over and I was pretty sure I had a black eye or perhaps two. I was hurt all over. And my clothes were torn at the most unfortunate of places.I couldn't go to a store to get a new cloth. And there was none in my car so I basically had to do the walk of shame just to come home. And the first person I see is Jason. Oh goodness."Who did this to you? Why didn't you call me?" He kept on asking questions upon questions, which checking each and every bruise, "We need to take you to the hospital...."I took my hand from him and huffed. I had no reason to go to the hospital. Cameron wasn't a vicious fighter, she was in a worse shape than me. And she was able to get just a few strong punches in.I did the greater work."Leave me alone please, there's nothing you can do about this so just let it be," I said, smiled a bit at him while I

Isabella's point of view.Jason got us another penthouse in another apartment complex that wasn't owned by him. Furnished it to my satisfaction. And also made sure that he told me nothing about the whole security cameras in the house. If there was any, I had no idea about them."You can't seem to process what happened that day, you keep on getting flashbacks" The therapist Jason got for me said, she smiled like we were some kind of old friends. Her bubbly personality was a fresh start from most of the tensed people I met recently. I felt like they were holding themselves back from talking about the whole traumatizing case. They had no idea I was even pregnant. No one knew about that pregnancy but Jason and I.I nodded, my head bowed down so I could look at my entwined fingers.I had no idea what to say to a woman like this. I had no idea how she was going to help me recover from the trauma. Was it even right for me to be traumatized? I mean, yes, I lost my baby but I didn't even know

Isabella's point of view.I swear my head hurt like a bitch when I woke up, all I could see were blinding white lights everywhere and sometimes the occasional doctor with their white coats.I went in and out of consciousness and every time, I woke up at a different time of the day.Sometimes I saw Jason, sometimes he hovered on me, other times he was screaming for the doctor. But I heard him, multiple times.I heard him when he talked to me every time. The sweet words he said to me while he caressed my forehead, the kisses he placed there and sometimes, when I felt really strong, I tried my best to squeeze his hand. There was a time I heard a child speaking. I was pretty sure it was Amethyst because of how soft she had spoken. She had begged me to wake up for her and I tried, I really tried.I just couldn't.
