Laura walked into the office the next morning a little bleary-eyed and foggy-brained. She’d had trouble sleeping, wondering when or if Angelo would call, even though it had only been one day. He was already consuming her thoughts. As a result, she was running late and hadn’t had time to stop for a coffee. Not that she expected him to be there again. She was just longing for a good, strong brew.

Raquel came charging around the corner, her high platform heels clicking on the warm, honey-colored hardwood floors that were present throughout the Kinetic offices, except for the corner offices and conference rooms. “Good, you’re here. Come with me. We have a big day ahead of us.”

“What’s going on?” Laura asked as she followed her. She dropped her bags off at her desk as they passed by. She threw her coat on top of them and hurried after her boss.

The walls of Kinetic were adorned with abstract paintings from local artists. It was one of the ways they supported the community and got the company name in the arts sections of the indie papers when they made a purchase at an art show. Raquel always liked making a big show of things and scoring the photo-ops.

They headed into Raquel’s frosted glass-walled corner office. It was spacious with cream-colored carpeting and accented with large abstract floral paintings. Raquel’s desk was large, sleek and modern and there was a cream colored leather sofa and two chairs surrounding a circular glass coffee table in the center. It had a purple orchid in a cream-colored ceramic vase on it. Laura dreamed of one day having an impressive office like that. Having high-level client meetings of her own. Calling the shots.

“Take a seat,” Raquel said, flipping her long, red hair over her shoulder.

    Laura silently obliged.

Raquel adjusted her silk blouse and handed her a stack of files. “I need you to review these ASAP and pull out what you think are the best jobs of the bunch. Then I need you to do a search for competitor ads. Same thing, pull out the best and provide a brief synopsis of each company and their strategy for comparison purposes.”

She inwardly groaned. “Sure thing,” she said, grabbing the files and doing her best to fake some measure of enthusiasm. “When do you need this by?”

“1 pm. today,” she said, lacing her fingers together.

    “Today?”

“Yes, we received a call this morning that a potential client wants to come in to discuss ideas around a new campaign for their business. They're meeting me here at 2:30 pm. and I need those files and external ads shortlisted by 1 pm, so that I can have a chance to review them.”

“That’s pretty short notice. What’s the company?” Laura asked.

“Not your concern, at least not until we land this client. It’s a big one, so I don’t want to say anything yet. Hence also the rush. You’d better get started,” Raquel said, as she stood up, clearly signaling for her to leave.

“Right,” Laura said, her shoulders hunched over with the weight of the files. Raquel always kept her bigger prospects top secret until the clients came in to meet her.

“Let me know if you finish early,” Raquel called after her. “I won’t be leaving the office today or taking any breaks.”

A not-so-subtle hint for her to do the same or else. “Will do,” Laura said, not bothering to turn back. The files were heavy and she was upset. Still not even a thanks. One day, she thought, I won’t be at the mercy of someone like that. But she knew that day was a long way off from where she was now.

Laura set the files down on her desk. She wouldn’t even have time to slip out for a cup of her favorite coffee. “Guess the office coffee will have to do,” she muttered to herself. She shuddered. It was literally the worst coffee she had ever tasted.

The hours passed by as she pored over the files taking notes, assessing the ads for their overall presence, appeal, and effectiveness for the target audience. She pulled the ones aside that stood out for her and made some quick notes as to why. She then turned to her computer and researched other ads of a similar nature. Bookmarking and printing the ones she thought stood out.

Finally, she had her shortlist. She had whittled it down from twenty-five to the ten best, out of the dozens of ads she had reviewed. She put them together in a neat folder and typed up a summary of each, its strengths, some background on the company along with the relevant target market statistics.

Laura sat back, pleased with her work. She had a good eye for these things. She knew she did. She looked at the time. 12:05 pm. She finished early. Raquel would be pleased. She gathered up her work and brought it to Raquel’s office.

Raquel was just finishing up a phone call, when she waved her in. “Got it…No problem at all, that’s one of our specialties…Wonderful…I look forward to meeting you.” She hung up the phone. “Our 2:30 p.m. meeting is confirmed.”

“Great. I have the information ready as requested,” she said as she handed the folder to her.

Raquel put her Fendi reading glasses on and grabbed the folder out of her hand. Without a word, she started flipping through the pages inside. She took her time assessing the file, then snapped it closed. “This will do. Thanks.”

Laura nodded and turned to leave.

“Hang on,” Raquel said. “Since you pulled together all of this research and this meeting is on such short notice, I’d like to have you sit in on it in case any questions come up that I need you to answer.”

“Sure, I’d be happy to,” Laura, excited at the prospect of being involved in a client proposal. This would be her first time. She wasn’t normally included in such important meetings.

“Don’t get all excited,” Raquel said, pulling her reading glasses down her nose. “I don’t want you to say or do anything in the meeting unless I ask you to. I’m running the meeting and will be the spokesperson for Kinetic Advertising. Just sit by quietly in case I need something from you. Got that?”

    “Got it.”

“Good,” she said, pushing her glasses back up. “Now go prep yourself for possible questions if they come up. If they do, I expect quick, professional answers that are on point.”

“Yes, Ms. Sheridan,” Laura said, as she took her leave.

    “Close the door!”

Laura did as she was asked, grumbling to herself about the rude treatment she always got. That wouldn’t be how she’d treat her staff if she ever had her own agency. She’d inspire loyalty by treating people with respect and giving them opportunities to shine. If she ever got there. She sighed, realizing how far away she was from that goal. Businesses cost a fortune to start and her savings account was rather modest.

Oh well, she thought, no way to go but forward. At least she might learn something in this client meeting. She couldn’t wait to see how Raquel handled a big potential account.

Laura went to the kitchen and made herself some noodles in a cup. It was all she had time for. She sat at her cluttered desk, which was in an open area near some tall filing cabinets, with her lunch and stared at her colorful collection of magazine clippings of international destinations that she had posted to the short wall that surrounded the front of her desk.

She loved the travel magazines and bought them monthly. She pored over them, clipping out pictures of places she hoped to visit one day: Paris, Vienna, Rome, Venice, Madrid, Amsterdam, Morocco, Greece, Antigua, St.Lucia, and the list went on and on…

Laura sat quietly with her earphones plugged in, listening to some relaxing Caribbean music. It always lifted her spirits and made her feel happy and light. She ate her noodles while gazing at her pictures, dreaming of exotic escapes.

Her reveries were short-lived. Raquel came up to her desk. Laura took out her earphones. “Yes?”

“I just called the caterer and they won’t be able to make a delivery to us on such short notice. I need some things for our meeting this afternoon.”

    “Okay?” Laura said.

“I want you to go to the Piccadilly Bakery and pick up an assortment of baked goods, some bottles of San Pellegrino and a carafe of coffee.”

Laura looked at the clock. It was 12:40 p.m. “Me? I-uh…” she wasn't too happy about being deemed the office gopher.

“I’d hurry if I were you. They get pretty busy over there.”

Laura looked down at her almost finished noodles and sighed. “Sure thing.”

“Use your own credit card, you can expense it later,” Raquel said as she turned to walk away.

“Can I get a cab back? That’s going to be a lot to carry.”

Raquel turned and gave her an annoyed look. “I suppose so. Just hurry.”

Laura nodded. She wolfed the last two spoonfuls of noodles down and grabbed her purse. She changed into her running shoes.

She raced the five blocks over to the bakery. Sure enough, it was lined up. She waited in line, looking at her watch every two minutes. The lined moved slowly. It was a busy day for the area’s favorite bakeshop. She knew Piccadilly’s was well worth the wait, but time was speeding by. Twenty minutes later she made it to the front of the line and placed her order.

“That’s going to be a fifteen minute wait. We just ran out of coffee and are brewing a new batch.”

“Uh, okay,” she said, again looking at her watch. It was almost 1:15 p.m. already.

“Next!” the woman at the counter yelled.

Laura shuffled over to the side to wait. She fixed her makeup up a bit while she waited. She hoped she’d be able to track down a cab. They could be hard to come by. It was all timing.

Finally, they called her order. “Thanks,” she said as she paid the bill. “A receipt please.” She took the receipt, then piled the items in her arms. It was going to be tricky hailing a cab with an armful of goods. She prayed she’d have some luck.

She stood out on the sidewalk in front of the bakery watching for a cab.

One rounded the corner, heading her way. She dashed out between two parked cars to wave him down. No luck. He sped past her with two people in the backseat. A couple of minutes later, another cab. Another dash to hail him.

Again, no luck. He didn’t even look her way. She sighed and went back to the sidewalk. Her load was growing heavy. Two more cabs, two more strikes out.

She was starting to panic and was feeling sweaty from holding the items that were growing heavier by the minute. She spotted another cab. This time she was determined to stop him. She darted out in between the cars and stepped into the lane.

The cab driver slammed on the brakes and started yelling at her. “Are you crazy? You’re going to get yourself killed!”

“I really need a ride,” she groaned as she shifted the items in her arms.

“This stuff is heavy and my boss is waiting for them for an important meeting. If I don’t get there on time, I’ll be fired. Homeless!” She was going to work it.

The cab driver rolled his eyes. “I’ve heard it all. I’m sorry, but I’m on another call.”

“Where?” she asked, her desperation growing.

    He told her the address.

“Perfect, my office is on the way. I’ll give you a big tip if you drop me off,” she said, giving her best sweet smile.

“Oh, alright. You’ve got spunk. That’s got to count for something. Get in.”

“Thanks,” she said as she set some items on top of the cab so she could open the door. She loaded her items in and sat down, closing the door.

The cab driver sped off towards her office.

She picked up her phone and called the main line. The receptionist picked up. “Jennifer? Hi, it’s Laura. Can you meet me out front? I’ve got an armload of stuff and I could use some help with the doors.” She explained what Raquel had asked her to do.

“I can’t believe she sent you to get all that stuff alone,” Jennifer replied.

    “What a jerk!”

“I know. See you in a few minutes? …Thanks.”

“Tough day?” the cab driver asked.

“Yup, just like every other day.”

“Tell me about it,” he said. A couple of minutes later they reached her destination.

“Thanks a bunch,” Laura said as she paid him and left a generous tip.

“You bet,” he said, as she unloaded her boxes. He drove away.

She looked up the stairs leading to her office. Jennifer was there waiting. She waved and headed down the stairs to help with the boxes.

“Thanks, my arms are killing me, it took forever to get a cab.”

“I’m still choked she made you do this by yourself,” Jennifer said as they headed into the office. She sported a chin-length light brown bob, was 5’2”, and a little on the heavy side. She was twenty years old, with a handful of college classes under her belt. She was taking night classes as she could afford them to continue her business education.

“Yeah, I think I’ve just been demoted to office lackey.”

They brought the items in and set them down in the conference room.

Raquel stomped in. “You’re cutting this pretty close aren’t you?” She gave a long dramatic look to her watch. It was closing in on 2:00 p.m.

Laura wiped the sweat from her brow. Her hair was covered in flyaways. “It was pretty busy there and I had a hard time getting a cab.”

“Well, get this set up. Our clients are going to be here soon and I want to have it ready for them.” She stomped back out.

Jennifer and Laura looked at each other.

“Thanks for your help, wench,” Jennifer whispered to her.

Laura nodded. “I’d better get this set up.”

    “I’ll help.”

“Thanks, I really appreciate it,” Laura said.

Fifteen minutes later they had everything set up nicely in the conference room. Laura had just dropped her purse off at her desk and was changing back into her heels, when Raquel came by. “They’re here. Come on.”

Laura nodded and quickly tossed her running shoes under the desk.

She brushed her hands over her brown and cream-colored paisley V-neck, button-down blouse and camel-colored knee length skirt. She then grabbed a Kleenex and wiped the perspiration from her brow and her cleavage. She tried to smooth her hair back into place as best she could. She was a bit winded still, but ran to catch up to Raquel.

She stopped in her tracks and gasped. Oh my God, she thought, panicking. It was HIM.

Laura was dumbfounded. She felt like she was going to faint. Her face turned beet red and she felt herself starting to perspire again. Her mind swirled in a heightened state of shock and panic. Angelo made eye contact with her, the look of surprise clearly spreading across his face. His lips broadened into a smile. Laura just looked at him. She felt frozen in place. Angelo introduced himself to Raquel, holding out his hand. “Delighted to meet you, Mr. Tsarkopolis,” Raquel said, noticeably impressed. She took in his tall, well-built physique, grinning like the proverbial cat that was about to eat the canary. “Please, call me Angelo,” he said. His dark hair, still slightly mussed up,was tamed a bit for the meeting. “Of course. Angelo,” Raquel said in a low, seductive voice. “Welcome to Kinetic Advertising.” Laura's heart fell through to the floor. Jennifer stood there, wide-eyed, admiring the tall, dark and handsome, and obviously successful Mr. Tsark

That night after work, Laura picked up the phone and called her best friend. “Sarah,” Laura said, “it’s me. I hope you don’t think I’m crazy, but I need your help.” “Sure, with what?” “I need your reporter skills. There’s a problem I’d like you to investigate.” “Of course,” she said. “Are you in trouble?” “Not me, someone else.” She hesitated. She wasn’t altogether sure if she should be doing this. “Who then?” “It’s about Angelo’s business,” she said. “Say what?” “I don’t want to talk about it over the phone, can you come over?” “Yeah, of course, you’ve got me curious. I’m just having dinner, can I come by in about an hour?” “Sounds good, thanks,” Laura said. “See you then,” Sarah said and hung up the phone. Laura decided to make some notes while she waited. She sat down at her computer and did a search for negative news on Tsar Enterprises. She found over a dozen instances. All recent. All saying similar things. All anonymous. S

The next day Laura arrived for work on time, Coffee Haven coffee in hand. “Morning, Jennifer,” she said brightly. “Hi, Laura,” she said in a funny tone. She had a huge smirk on her face. “So, care to fill me in on the handsome Mr. Tsarkopolis?” Laura blushed. “Um, not yet. There’s not really anything to tell at this point.” “That’s a load of crap if I ever heard one. Spill it, girl,” she said, shaking a finger at her. Laura hesitated. “Not yet. But soon. When there’s something more to tell.” She gave her a playful wink, and then started to head towards her desk. “You’d better!” Jennifer called out after her. “Inquiring minds want to know!” Laura chuckled. She took at seat at her desk, turned on her computer and took a long sip of coffee. She savored it for a moment. The perfect blend. Just then, Raquel came sauntering by. “Laura, I need you to pull some information for me.” Again, no good morning, no how are you. Laura silently fumed. “

Laura slept fitfully that night. Her phone never rang. She had waited so long, hoping it would ring, that it was too late to call Sarah by the time she finally realized that Angelo wasn’t going to call. How did he think it was okay not to call her under the circumstances? With her boss brazenly hitting on him? she wondered. She was tied in knots. He obviously didn’t care. On one hand, she dreaded going into work that morning, and yet on the other, she was anxious to get there to get a sense of where things were at. She walked past Coffee Haven. She hesitated, considering going in, but decided to keep walking out of spite. He probably wasn’t in there anyway, she told herself. Just keep walking and don’t let them make a bigger fool out of you. She reached the office and went around back to see if Raquel’s car was there. It wasn’t. She set her shoulders and tried to quell the upset feelings that were gripping her. She’d definitely be calling Sarah tonight. She’d give her

Monday morning came and Laura was a bundle of nerves in anticipation of her first actual date with Angelo. She had spent the weekend agonizing over every detail of what had transpired so far and wondering about what was to come. She had played countless scenarios in her head about how things might go, what he was going to be like on a date. She had also been letting her insecurities play on her mind a bit, wondering if he really was on a weekend business trip or if there was something else he was doing. She thought about the rumors that Monday nights were usually reserved for low-priority, secondary dates, and that the important dates for people you were super interested in were always on a Friday or Saturday night. Not letting her worries deter her, Laura had spent a bit more time on her makeup and hair that morning, and dressed up a little for the occasion. Nothing too flashy since she’d be at work all day and they were heading to the park later. She wore a fitte

Her throat felt tight. “It’s fine.” “I missed you the other night,” he said, his deep voice soft, probing. She blinked. “What do you mean?” “At dinner. You didn’t show. You were working late?” “What?” “Raquel said you weren’t available.” Laura was furious. “She lied.” “Lied? Why?” “She told me I wasn’t invited. That it was a meeting just for the two of you.” He exhaled. “I see. That’s not what she told me.” “Mmmhmm,” she said. She was steamed. “And then when I didn’t call you…” “Yeah,” she said, feeling silly and gullible. She thought of Raquel and how manipulative and selfish and outright mean she was. She didn’t know how she was going to continue to work for someone like that. “Your boss is a piece of work,” he said. “I’ll have to keep my guard up. But she does seem capable of handling our campaign. I’d still like to work with you, if you’d be comfortable with that?” “Yes, yes, of course,” Laura replied, putting a hand to h

He waited for her to continue. He’d let her share whatever she felt comfortable with. She lost her appetite and pushed her plate away. “He left me for a girl we both had met at college. She was in one of our classes. The whole thing really sucked. Since then, I’ve just dated a bit here and there, nothing serious.” She felt embarrassed telling such a sorry tale to one of New York City’s most eligible bachelors. The absurdity that things with Angelo could ever go anywhere came surging forward in her mind. He read her expression. “I’m afraid he’s not a very smart fellow, then. To let such a beautiful and charming girl go.” She tried to muster a smile. He pushed his plate aside as well and reached out to hold her hand. “Some things stay with you, though, don’t they?” She nodded, averting her gaze. She didn’t want him to see how much that still affected her to this day. She’d been completely devastated when it happened. “I know,” he said. Just then the w

After she gave him directions, Angelo drove Laura back to Brooklyn to drop her off after their long dinner. Her head and heart were all over the place thanks to her body’s reactions to him. She didn’t want this night to end. She didn’t want to be away from him, but she knew she wasn’t ready to be invited into his bachelor pad. Her worst fear for this situation was that she would be his Monday night companion, while he had other women lined up to keep him company on the other nights of the week. She was lost in thought most of the way home. Angelo could tell by how quiet she was that she was deep in thought. He figured it was because he scared her off by being so forward and inviting her to his place after their first date. It was a work night as well, not even a night where they could have slept in afterwards if she did stay the night. He wasn’t sure what to do, so they mostly just listened to music on the way to her place. Each wondering if the evening had been messed up and

Six months later, Laura woke up feeling happier and more complete than she ever had in her life. She was now Mrs. Tsarkopolis. She lay there for a moment, letting her eyes adjust to the soft light streaming through the white curtains. She smiled as she felt the soft swaying of the 120-foot luxury yacht, the Sea Star, that Angelo had chartered for their two-week honeymoon through the Greek islands. He had wanted to show her where his family was from and do it in style. She closed her eyes again. She found the sensation of being on the water relaxing. She stretched and yawned, then rolled over. Angelo was still sleeping. The white sheet had slipped down to around his waist. Laura lay there looking at her husband. They had just spent their first night together as husband and wife. His face looked peaceful. She looked at his thick, dark hair, all askew, framing his face; the humidity giving it a wilder look. She loved it; it gave him an almost boyish charm. She looked at his long

Laura's jaw dropped in total shock. She recognized the tune right away. She looked to Angelo. “This is my favorite song!” He smiled. “I know. Sarah was kind enough to provide me with some valuable intel.” Sarah winked at her. The guitarist and keyboardist started playing the familiar melody. It was instantly recognizable to the audience, who again cheered. Shanna closed her eyes, and swayed to the music. She started singing her song: Dreams Carried Me Through. Her distinctive, rich voice was clear and soulful. Laura’s eyes began tearing up as she listened. She loved this song. She couldn’t believe this was happening, what Angelo had done for her. He saw her reaction and held her close, kissing her cheek. Nikolas was swaying to the music. Sarah and Barry smiled at them and held hands. Sarah knew how much that song meant to Laura. She had talked about it often, how it spoke to her. The audience was rapt, listening to Shanna’s unique and beautiful voice singing the well-

Three weeks after Laura had enthusiastically accepted the offer of a future position within the soon-to-be newly formed Bell Star division of Tsar Enterprises, Angelo arranged a celebratory evening at Painter’s Cove on Saturday night. Along with Sarah and Barry, who was taking the night off to just enjoy himself, Angelo brought Nikolas along. Painter’s Cove was three quarters full at this point and felt warm with colorful lights strewn about, giving a soft glow over the murals. Nikolas commented how it was a welcoming place, not pretentious, just comfortable and artsy. The five of them sat down at the best table in the house, with a good view of the stage, which Barry had taken the liberty of reserving. Laura snuggled into Angelo, his arm wrapped around her shoulder. His thick, dark hair had his usual tousled look. He was dressed in casual black jeans, a dark grey jacket and light blue button down shirt that set off his eyes nicely. His shirt collar was open a tasteful thr

Her eyes were warm with desire. He leaned forward, pulling her close to him. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face into her stomach. She held his head in her hands, running her fingers through his thick, dark hair, still damp from his shower, and bent over him. He could feel the touch of her breasts through the t-shirt. He slid his hands up and caressed her bare back, relishing the feel of her skin. “I constantly crave touching you, feeling your body.” “And I want you to,” she whispered into his ear. She writhed in his grip, letting him know his touch was pleasurable, desired. His strong hands moved to her waist, then felt the curve of her hips. She felt a swell of emotion for the man behind the door at the end of the hall. She took a deep breath and padded down the hall to his door. She listened. She didn’t hear anything. She looked down. The light was still streaming through. “Here goes nothing,” she whispered to herself. She knocked on the door. No answer. She knocked again, this time a little louder. “Angelo? Are you still up?” Still no answer. She was about to turn back around when she felt a swell of confidence. She knocked one more time. “Angelo, can I come in?” Still nothing. She bit her lip. They held each other for a while, looking at the flames flickering in the gas fireplace, each lost in thought about their conversation tonight. Angelo got up to make them some herbal tea. Laura sat staring out his large windows, marveling at the nighttime view. She felt like she was in a dream. But she wasn’t. This was real. He was real. And she loved him with all of her heart and soul. Angelo came back with the tea and they stayed up talking for hours. The night was growing late and soon they grew quiet again. Finally, Angelo had to ask a question. “It’s getting late. I don’t mean to pressure you or anything, but I wanted to let you know that you’re welcome to stay the night here. With me. If you wanted.” She looked at him. She wanted to, very badly, but part of her still felt slightly guarded. She hesitated to answer. “I, um, hadn’t planned to stay. I didn't pack an overnight bag or anything.” He looked at her and nodded. “And I suppose, much of tonight's

He nodded, looking down at her hand. “They’re married now, that also happened pretty fast. When the engagement ended last year, I stopped dating for awhile…until I met you.” He looked back up at her and smiled. “Really?” she asked, the surprise evident on her face. “Really. Why do you look so surprised?” he asked. “Because, you were one of New York City’s most eligible bachelors, and like I said you’re gorgeous, young, successful. I would think it would be impossible for you not to have women constantly hanging all over you, workaholic or not.” He shook his head. “After the kind of experiences I had I felt pretty used and rather jaded. Plus, my father also died last year and when I was appointed CEO, my life changed dramatically. It was hard to lose him like that and at the same time get thrust into such an all-consuming and demanding role.” Laura felt for him. “That must have been a terribly difficult time for you.” He nodded. “I wasn’t in a good place so

She squeezed him tight. She actually felt relieved to have gotten that off her chest. After a few moments, she figured she’d just get the rest of her rather unremarkable dating history out. She sighed. “After that there’s not a lot to tell. I’ve had a couple of dates with guys who never called back, some dates where I just wasn’t feeling it. Nothing that lasted too long. After Aaron, my longest relationship was about three months. His name was Brad. He ended up getting a job in Dubai. I had no intention of moving. But it wasn’t that big of a deal, we weren’t really that serious.” She looked over at the fireplace, then down at her glass. “The last guy I dated, we went out for maybe three weeks, split as soon as we'd slept together. That was not quite a year and a half ago.” She looked over at Angelo. “Not the best track record, hey?” “It helps me understand you better,” he said gently. “Why I might’ve made you nervous.” Laura felt her face flush. “Well that, and just the fa
