Chapter 8: congrats, Laurent family

.

“Okay, Mr Laurent. We’ll move in with you. Can you please, please, make sure my two conditions are acknowledged? I promise we’ll be good houseguests, the second this entire thing dies down we’ll leave you alone and let you be. But I’m unwilling to part with any of my conditions. I can’t.”

Arabella tentatively broached the subject, and Gael could see how tired the woman got just by talking about their situation.

“Okay.” Gael acquiesced. “Okay. We’ll figure out a way around it. I’ll accept the two conditions.”

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

Louis. We have an answer.

Arabella is willing to pose as my spouse, but she has two conditions.

She’s using another name, and she’s not doing any publicity with me.

She doesn’t want her face to be seen.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

That’s not looking good at all.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

It won’t look believable.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

I know, but I don’t know what else to do. She seems adamant about this.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

We even had a fight in front of her child.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

Hmm. not sure how we can get around this unless we take matters into our own hands.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

What do you mean?]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

We can release pictures taken by our own people. Slowly, taken so that her face isn’t seen. Any information that the paparazzi has of you two will be from us and us only.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

And you can always use your socials.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

We can fabricate some story of sorts as to why she doesn’t want to be seen in public.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

This doesn’t feel like we’re complying to her no-social condition.]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

We’re not. But there’s no way to keep the heat off of both of you without this. People aren’t going to believe you.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

This is the best option, right?]

[from Louis Avian MANAGER

Of course, Gael.]

[to Louis Avian MANAGER

Let’s do it, then.]

oOo

“Hudson, you have your stuff that I gave you? The backpack and Benny?” Arabella twisted in the passenger seat to smile at her son, who chirped and nodded in the affirmative.

“Great! Let’s go now! We can go to your Dad’s house.” Arabella settled into her seat, reaching over to take Gael’s hand in hers, lacing their fingers on the gearshift.

“What--” Gael mumbled in surprise, before feeling Arabella’s death-grip squeeze. As she glared up at the other man, Arabella indicated to the backseat, where her son was watching innocently with a dart of his eyes.

Right.

They had to pretend in front of Hudson now too. Just to reinforce that Gael totally was his dad. Lovely.

Moving in, luckily, wasn’t too much of a hassle. The mother-son duo only had a few boxes, and everything was packed within the hour. The drive too, was short, just across town, away from the more cramped inner city to the luxury villas that were on the other side.

Hudson, for his part, had immense enthusiasm. Once he was let in, he was quick to explore, looking around at the new space introduced to him.

“You can show him around, let him know the spaces that he’s not allowed in. I’ll bring the other boxes up myself.” It was kind of odd to see Arabella smiling, especially seeing how since most of the time he had been on the receiving end of her glares.

But then again, it was because of one troublesome little kid, who was currently wrapping his small hand around Gael’s index finger and making his heart melt in all sorts of ways.

Gael nodded, before bending down to scoop up Hudson, bouncing the other on his hip. His hand reached across and playfully poked the little boy’s stomach, sending the little one into a fit of giggles.

He tickled as he slid into the hallway, intending to give the tour.

“Here’s the kitchen. Lots of snacks, okay? Lots of things for you to eat. I have some ice cream in there, cookies, and all sorts of junk food. Don’t tell your momma, okay?” Gael conspiratorially raised a finger to his lips, grinning as Hudson mirrored the motion.

“Can we have some ice cream now?” Hudson whispered.

“Mmm. Maybe not now, I think your mummy’s coming upstairs with a few boxes, and she’s sure to get angry if she sees us eating ice cream now. Come on, let’s see the best parts of the house.”

Gael walked along the big interior, pointing out the room Hudson would be occupying which excited the little boy to no end, and after reassuring him that he would let him decorate with as many bear and tiger stickers as he liked, they moved on, to the other bedrooms (Wow! Daddy, you have a bouncy bed!), Gael’s studio (“There’s a bad word on your welcome mat, Daddy.” “Shh. Don’t tell your momma.), and the backyard (“Wow! There’s lots of room for a tiger, Daddy! Even a pool!” “No tigers here, little one. I already have you!”), before ultimately coming up to the living room, where Arabella sat, scrolling on her phone.

“Hey, how was it?” She smiled up at the two, setting her phone aside. Hudson wiggled to be let down, jumping into his mother’s arms, who easily caught him and settled him down on her lap.

“Daddy’s house is so big! I have a room and he said I could have lotsa stickers, and we have a pool! Can we have a tiger, momma? I want a tiger.” Hudson bounced excitedly.

Arabella looked down fondly at her son, nodding along at most words. “Hmm. Not sure about the tiger, baby bear. But let’s see what I can do about that. Did you tell Daddy thank you for taking the time to show you around?”

Hudson turned, chirping out a thank you, before wiggling off his mother’s lap and darting in the direction of his room, leaving Gael and Arabella in the living room.

“I set up our stuff already in one of the bedrooms, and one of the others that I think is Hudson’s. Let me know if it isn’t, or you want me to move anything.” Arabella murmured.

He nodded, letting the silence hang between them before breaking it. “Hey, Arabella. There’s something for you.” Gael pushed up from where he had been leaning against one of the walls, pulling out a velvet box.

“Well, drop on your knees and ask me.” Arabella teased, but the joke apparently didn’t fly over too well.

Gael didn’t crack a smile or anything of the sort.  Right. Hudson wasn’t in the room, there was no need to pretend.

Gael just tossed over the box, leaving Arabella to look down at the ring.

It was a simple silver band, nothing flashy about it at all.

She sighed, sliding it onto her left finger.

The presence was cold, unfamiliar, alien.

She sank back in the couch, twisting the new ring, and tried to keep her mind from racing.

***

Gael opened the document sent to him by the company, sliding the paper out of the manilla folder.

The house, after the first day the two others had moved in, had grown quiet, save for when Hudson was home. Arabella and Gael retreated to opposite ends of the home, an imaginary line sliced through the middle of the house, neither party to ever cross. Arabella sank back onto the bed, her back thankful now that her endless nights of sleeping on the floor had somewhat come to an end. But still, for how long would she be able to enjoy this luxury? Her gaze drew to the bag in the corner, the very single duffle bag that had held all of hers and Hudson’s possessions, save for Hudson’s school backpack that was filled with loose sheets, remarks from his teacher, and odd rocks that the child liked to grab. Arabella had been living out of that bag for years. She rotated the same clothes, didn’t unpack, because there was no confirmation that she’d ever be able to stay. When she had her ap

She stepped out, intending to make her way to where she could see Hudson’s teacher, collecting all the children, but a hand in her path stopped her. Arabella glanced down--it was Gael’s, but the producer wasn’t paying attention to her, instead staring off at one of the bushes. It wasn’t extended to stop her, but--what was it for?“Well, do you want to carry Hudson?” She asked, tilting her head in confusion. Gael didn’t answer, instead taking Arabella’s free hand and lacing it with his own. Their fingers tangled, and Arabella tried hard to not think about when the last time her hand had been held like this, aside from all the times she held hands with her own son. “Let’s go, we’ve got a few more minutes before school begins.” Gael hummed, as though his hand wasn’t the warmest and his thumb most definitely wasn’t resting so comfortably on top of Arabella’s hand. The elder trailed after him, making the

Breaking our agreement, using your son to get me home, forcing us to have dinner, trying to appeal by cooking my foods, immediately answering that I’d make it to his play. You’re overstepping.” Gael huffed. Arabella seemed to recoil for a moment, before firing right back. “I can’t believe you! You think I’m doing this to get on your fucking good side or to be a model husband? Hudson was asking for you. I felt terrible, so I asked. You could have said no, at any time, by the way. And I made your favorite foods as a fucking apology, Gael! As an apology for disturbing your work time! And I answered for you because it’s the second thing I’m asking of you. It’s for Hudson. Stranger! Please be my Child’s Father .Chapter 12: a colossally screw up. Speaking of--there was a firm knock at the door, and Gael rose to let her in. Chanty Starr, or Chanty as the industry and fans knew her, was a sweet faced woman, known for her clever songs and a personality that drew people in. Gael himself had talked to her during a few awards shows, and he found that he definitely did not hate her presence. She was polite and private, and she had a similar drive and enthusiasm that he enjoyed working with. She grinned at him, and god bless, knew about his aversion to hugs, instead reaching out for a shoulder pat instead. “Hello Gael! Let me tell you how excited I am for this collaboration. I’ve been talking about it all day. I’m sure my managers are tired of hearing me talk about it. But it’s true. The track is there, the lyrics are just how I envisioned it to be. Now it should be easy for us!” She cheered, her enthusiasm immediately picking his own up as she gifted him

. Stranger! Please be my Child’s Father .Chapter 13: do you see right through me? . Gael had initially anticipated a house that was upturned, his pictures on the floor and glass shattered everywhere, but surprisingly, he came back to an intact and quiet house. Too quiet of a house. The house was dark, seeing that it was late in the night by the time Gael got home, but there were no signs of life. A cough -- Arabella -- was the only indication that there was someone else living inside of the home. It was too late to talk now, so Gael decided to leave it for now. Besides, it was Saturday the next day--the weekend. He’d talk to them then. Plans did not work out to his convenience. In the morning, after Gael had tossed and turned on his bed for hours and hours, he crept out, padding into the studio. Neither mother nor son turned around to greet him as they usually did. Rather, Arabella gently took the empty bowl from her son’s grasp and set it in the sink, before hoisting the to

Arabella made a noise of surprise, before answering him. “‘I’m just uncomfortable with driving.” She said. There was definitely a story there, but Gael didn’t pry. He just slowed, switching to the slow lane with sharp clicks of his indicator, and reached across the console to slip his hand under Arabella’s, warmth filling his palm as he gently pulled the sharp fingernails away from attempting to tear into her fabric. “Your dress needed saving.” Gael said cheekily as Arabella looked and stared at him, neither of them quite talking about how she squeezed his hand in a show of thanks. Arabella didn’t respond to the joke, instead quietly murmuring, “You’re putting a lot of effort into this, aren’t you?”Gael sobered up, staring straight ahead as he replied. “You deserve more. Stranger! Please be my Child’s Father .Chapter 15: playing the safety game . Arabella has long since perfected the ParentNapTM. Maybe it came with the paternal instincts that triggered when Hudson entered his orbit, but at the slightest hint of disturbance, she was immediately awake. Most of the time, she snapped awake, echoes of a bad dream bleeding into the background as she tried to calm down her racing heart. But days like this were a little different.See, Arabella was already up by the time she heard her door slowly open, the telltale small squeak of the hinges startling her from her slumber. She stayed very quiet, not moving, regulating her breathing, as she tried to discern who the newcomer was. The little pad of feet was enough–it was Hudson. Gael moved with a bit of purpose, but he dragged his left leg just a little, so there was often a little shuffle to the sound of his steps.

The bed dipped, and the little boy clambered onto the mattress next to her. It was quiet

Both of them would drop off Hudson in the mornings, Arabella would pick up the little boy on her way home from work, Gael would come home early in the evenings, both of them would trade off on who cooked dinner, and Gael would complete the rest of his work from the home studio. It was nice–some days he could watch Arabella relax and help his son with homework as she prepped dinner–other days he was able to indulge in his wife’s god tier cooking. Certain mornings were a bit rough. Sometimes things didn’t go to plan–but this was definitely not something that Gael anticipated. At first, it was the alarm going off. Gael finally groaned and pulled himself up, and the time on the screen made him screech. Fifteen minutes late–he’d just have to skip his shower to make sure that he was on time for driving Arabella and Hudson to

Stranger! Please be my Child’s Father .Chapter 60: one honeymoon later . Gael walks back up to their room with a tray holding two glasses of orange juice, coffee, and as many danishes as he felt comfortable stealing away from the hotel’s continental breakfast. He could have just stayed in bed and ordered up room service, it’s not like they can’t afford it, but Gael had woken up this morning and looked at Arabella’s face on the pillow next to him, peaceful and deeply asleep, and felt like he might burst. It filled him with too much energy to stay in bed, but he couldn't wake her either, not when she looked sweet as honeycomb dripping in sunlight. So Gael had left the quiet stillness of their honeymoon suite in search of sustenance for both of them. It occurred to him on the way back that he might be following some unconscious, primal instinct, fulfilling a caveman desire in the back of his brain to provide for his wife or something like that. It didn’t make much sense, because G

He was attentive to Arabella whenever she called out for him. He gave her a message and got her a glass of water whenever she needed it. His nerves were there, lingering underneath the surface as he watched Arabella scream through a few painful contractions. He couldn’t imagine the pain that the other woman was going through. Gael whispered to her words of encouragement, but he was sure that the other was far too focused on breathing to really hear him. Right as they were being taken to the delivery room, Arabella held Gael’s head between her hands. They stared at each other before Arabella kissed him. “You know I love you, right?” “I know.” She nodded before her face scrunched up into another pain expression. It happened a lot faster than they thought. Honestly, giving birth was harder t

He smiled when he got to spend more time at the hospital with his momma. Faye took him, bringing along toys and other things for the boy to play with while she knit and chatted with Arabella. Gael would come and gather the boy before practice and they would all have dinner together before leaving. Afterward, Hudson goes back with Faye and Gael goes to the hospital to stay with his wife. Arabella has been gaining color back and, despite the huge round stomach, the woman moves as much as she can. She complains afterward about her back hurting or her ankles being swollen. He knows that his mother probably has informed him of everything already. He knows she wants them to fly out to that country for the wedding and to visit family since Arabella will be a part of their family soon, but he really doesn’t want that. We will now announce the finalists. In red, hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, weighing at 124 pounds is Drake Fowller.” As the man walks out, a large roar from the crowd comes. Arabella remembers what Gaby told him about Fowller. He is slightly smaller than Gael, but only by an inch. He is 21 years old and won last year's competition. “In blue, from Eugene, Oregon, weighing in at 130 pounds exactly, is Gael Laurent.” Arabella claps and cheers along with their section. She wants to believe her ears when the cheers for Gael are more powerful than the other, but she isn’t sure. Maybe Gael is more popular than she thought. The man walks out, the blue gear on him. He was able to get a hit in and the crowd roared again, but something didn’t get called right and the round was paused as Gael’s coach called out the missed point. Gael backed away, chest heaving. Trevor looked ready to continue, not taking the moment to rest. Gael stood with his hands on his hips, trying to steady himself. Arabella knew the other was nervous. They planned on staying the whole weekend even if Gael didn’t make it to the second day. Having their friends here is an added perk. The two could barely keep their hands to themselves as the water slid over their bodies. Arabella loves watching Gael’s muscles flex and twist and turn as he moves about. She loves running her hands over the firm skin that stretches over the his back and chest, the powerful muscles in the man’s thighs brushing up against her own. Her favorite has been the dresses that fall right over her knees. She doesn’t wear them out, but at home, it’s all she wears. “No wonder I’m so tired and big. I have two babies in there,” Arabella groaned, kicking up her feet. Hudson giggles, sticking his ear to the round of Arabella’s stomach. “So there are two of them?” Arabella nods, running her hand through the boy’s hair. “I love you, baby Chacha.
