[Juliette’s POV]
For someone who reads lots of romance novels, I’d take the slightest detail and exaggerate it romantically. Worse, I’d catch the tiniest spark of response and interpret it as an attraction. I noticed the wavy top of his short dark hair in a nice, clean sweep to the back—which was different from the sexy mess it was yesterday—and was immediately flattered by the extra effort.
Then I started admiring him—just as I did yesterday. Whether it was a boring business suit or a midnight blue tuxedo, he could easily pass for an exotic prince or an elegant British spy. Even with that fierce gaze, he looked nothing like a mafia or a devil.
Pfft! I mentally rolled my eyes as my feet kept gliding along the plush carpet of the aisle. Now I know why Papa forbade me to peruse that form of literature—it makes your female hormones go wild unnecessarily; it would only be a matter of time before I was trapped in The Devil’s spell, thinking that I was in love with him, or vice versa.
Quick, say something bad about him, I counselled myself. He may look like the gallant male character from one of those novels, but he is not. He’s Ralph Virtus—the head of a vicious mafia clan, the one who stole your family fortune—and may have as well put your father in that silent state.
And with that, the hatred was back, in full force.
*****
The door closed behind me, shutting out the world of men in black shades and suits, and guns strapped to their bodies. Finally, I could breathe peacefully.
We had just finished reciting our marital vows, and Ben, the Mafia King’s right hand man, whispered in my ear to follow him off the stage. I did—dragging the enormous train through two rows of big burly bodyguards—and now I was here in a small, cold room, alone with the most ruthless person I’ve known.
Ralph Virtus was standing in the middle of the room when I entered, and as soon as the door closed, he spun around and glared at me. “What was that out there?” That deep timbre continued to stir butterflies in my stomach.
Knowing that he meant the brief pause at the start of my pledge, I inhaled deeply and forced a sweet smile. “I thought that went really well.”
He shot a finger at me and snarled, “You hesitated, Juliette. What do you think that means?”
“That I don’t like anything that begins with ‘V’?” I battered my lashes innocently.
He raised a surprised brow, and I felt a victorious smug on my face, which he didn’t take well. His eyes deepened a shade. Lowering his voice, he taunted, “You’re really loud for someone who’s broke and powerless.”
Resentment mixed with anger rose in my chest, clenching my hands and driving my nails into my palms. “You thief,” I muttered in a fierce whisper.
A chuckle vibrated from his throat, and those sickeningly alluring lips spread into a satisfied smile that riled me more. “I like that face,” he said and inched closer. “Keep that hatred inside, Juliette. You’ll need lots of it tonight.”
Immediately, the anger vanished. An anxious, ominous feeling took over, and crippled my fighting spirit. “What do you mean?” I asked, and winced inside in shame; it was the stupidest question one could ever ask their enemy. What do you think he meant, Juliette?
His eyes seemed curious about something on my face, but his voice was harsh when he answered, “I don’t answer questions, especially from you. So you figure that out on your own, Juliette.”
Argh! My nails drove deeper into my flesh. I hate that I like the way my name sounded in his rich, deep voice! Why does this man come with everything! The looks, the brawn and brains, and now the voice! Why can’t he be less than perfect?
Abruptly, he straightened his back and returned to staring at me with his usual stoic face. “Your things are on their way to my mansion,” he announced in a blasé tone.
“Why are they—?” I released my fists and stomped forward. “I’m not moving into your place, mafia! You can’t make me!”
He was unbuttoning the cuffs of his sleeves when he paused and looked at me with a displeased frown. “I thought we made it very clear in the contract.”
“There isn’t a clause in there that said, Juliette Lux would move into Ralph Virtus’s residence after the wedding,” I refuted through gritted teeth.
He dropped a bewildered smile to the floor, and then chuckled dryly, shaking his head in disbelief. He lifted his face to the ceiling with his eyes closed and drew in a long, uncanny deep breath, as though he was meditating, and then, he murmured, “You’re right.”
The air around me turned chilly; danger pricked the hairs on my arms, and a tremble of fear crawled up my spine. Something about that tone feels deadly. Perhaps I might die in the next minute, I thought and braced myself for it. No matter the circumstance, I needed to stay strong for my family.
“But,” he exhaled a whisper in a sudden turn of tone, and his eyes were back on me. Wrapping his left arm around his waist and propping his right elbow on it, he tapped a finger to his lips and knitted his brows with an innocent puzzlement, as though we were discussing the results of a science experiment. “You did promise to give me an heir….”
Shock ravaged my features. I knew where this was heading. All the pieces have finally come together: the oath of a Lux to never break a promise, the vow to ‘live together in holy matrimony’, the marital status, and that final item in the contract—the one that I most wanted to nullify—all came together in a full circle to imprison me in this hellhole. Damn the brilliance of the Virtus!
That promise of an heir was the biggest chip this bastard has, and it was Papa who placed it in his hands!
Before I got into a round of self-pity, The Devil melted his human guise and returned to his true form. As if he could read my mind and knew that I no longer reject the move, he started listing his expectations towards me. “You will be a loving wife to me, Juliette, whether you like it or not.”
“You can’t tell me what to do, mafia. I’ve said it a million times—.”
He closed the gap between us in one mighty stride and then threw his face in mine. “First of all, Juliette,” he warned solemnly, his minty breath blowing gently on my face with each syllable he made, “You don’t ask. You listen.” Warmth from his broad chest was seeping under my skin, distracting me.
I opened my mouth to protest but he was a millisecond faster.
“Second, don’t call me ‘mafia’.”
“I’ll call you whatever I want," I argued. “I said, you don’t control—.”
“You call me Ralph!” he snapped impatiently, ending the thread and moving onto the next item in his list. “Do whatever you want, but you’ll show the whole goddamn world that you’re my loving wife, ” he added in a controlled voice.
I couldn’t think. My head was now a huge entangled ball of yarn. I had been too naive—my greatest torture wasn’t the wedding, it was what happened after! Millions of images of what could happen when I moved in, and what would happen tonight, flooded my mind. A lightning storm was happening inside me.
Then all of a sudden, something came through and snapped me back into focus. My head shot up and I blurted, “I want to see my father.”
The Devil raised his brows in surprise the second time. He had backed away from me and was going on with the rest of his rules, when I interjected. Those black irises dilated with fury, telling me another thing about him: he doesn’t like to be interrupted.
But I don’t give a shit about what he likes. He should know one important thing about me too, that I don’t care about his stupid rules!
So I ignored his frustration—and my wifely duties—and added firmly, before he uttered the next word in his mind, “I’ve done everything you asked. So, let me see my father.” The strain in my voice was unmistakable, and so was the quiver at the end. I winced at my failure to hide my emotions. Calm down, I urged myself.
The Devil looked at me with a pretend curiosity as he circled both arms around his waist and centralised his weight on the front of his feet. Then, he chuckled with mocking amusement. "You seriously think you’ve done a good job to demand such requests?"
I was aghast. What is he… is he appraising me? Like I’m an employee?
Folding my arms, I cast a frown and parroted, “And you seemed to think that I'm one of your staff." I paused briefly, and then spitted the last word with a condescending distaste, "Mafia."
At my open defiance, those brown eyes changed into a dangerous shade. He moved towards me threateningly with a killing stare, and instinctively, my hands curled up firmly at my sides to summon the strength to stand my ground as he loomed over me.
You don’t scare me, I told myself and held his gaze, looking daggers at him.
A strange glint crossed his eyes, then his head tilted in a way that exudes his devilish charm—and my useless heart skipped a beat.
He took a long, silent look at me, as though he was trying to read my mind. Even though we still weren’t touching, the strong warmth radiating from his body exaggerated the closeness between us. I just tip my toes, and I could feel those lips on mine. My breathing lightened.
A vision of him cupping my face with his large bare hands, his thumbs stroking my cheeks, flashed across my mind, and my lips went dry. They parted like parched petals wanting to be quenched….
Abruptly, the warmth vanished. I blinked, and he had already backed away. Staring above my head again, he muttered in a soft, hoarse whisper, “Andy will take you there.”
I blinked again in confusion. The name tumbled from my lips before I could stop it. “Andy? Andy who?”
“Don’t make me repeat the rules, Juliette. You heard them well.” The energy was back in his voice again. “They’re not requests,” he clarified with another one of his menacing glares.
I returned him the same glare with defiance and insisted. “I said, I’m not one of your staff, mafia.” I stressed on the last word to annoy him—the only ammunition I have left, in my broken and powerless state.
But the natural strategist struck again.
“You’re also not a Lux anymore, Juliette,” the Mafia King said with the calmness of an executioner. Then, slowly, he tapped a finger to the side of his forehead to stress on his words as he said, “Remember that the next time you decide to speak.”
[Juliette's POV] Yesterday… “Miss Lux, we’ve landed safely at the U.R.T. International Airport. The time is nine in the evening….” I unbuckled the belt, looked out of the window and sighed in nostalgia. Ah…, I miss Bora Bora already. The turquoise waters and the clear blue sky flashed across my mind, and I could still feel the warm salty breeze on my cheeks. Four days is not enough for a graduation trip, not for the daughter of the richest man in the Republic. But for the new CEO of Lux Corp, it's just nice, I thought with a tired yawn and a lazy smile of satisfaction. I'm ready to start work at the office, Papa. Hmm? I leaned forward, squinting to make sense of the dark forms through the misty glass pane. It took a second, but I saw what they were: men—two of them—in black suits and shades, standing erect in a soldier’s stance. As the plane swerved to a complete stop, I saw three more. Bodyguards, I concluded silently. Papa must have sent them; he always said that it's be
[Juliette’s POV]Doctor Rose slotted the chart under her right arm and casually tucked both hands into her robe pockets. “The bills aren’t cleared, and there’s another patient waiting for this bed. So, we’re out of choice, Miss Lux.”My eyes couldn’t grow any larger. “Are you telling me that you’re gonna take him off the machines and expect me to wheel him out of the hospital right now?”“Like I said, Miss Lux–.”“Don’t you ‘Miss Lux’ me! You've been my doctor since I was born! What’s gotten into you? Don’t act like you don’t know me!” I cried in anguish. These people, the ones Papa called friends, are now turning their backs on him. First, Uncle Jerry, now, Doctor Rose. Money seems to be the only thing that’s been keeping their friendships alive.Doctor Rose sighed and said, “Bills are bills, Miss Lux. The hospital needs funds to cure more people. Your father is not the only one here who needs medical attention.”“But he’s in a coma!” I protested strongly, my lips quivering in disbel
[Juliette's POV] The limousine swerved into an unfamiliar part of the city, closer to the meeting place with M. Johnson, and I felt nervous and light-headed; nervous as I'm about to make my first business deal; light-headed as I felt like I'm about to do something terribly wrong. The ants of doubt had been crawling under my skin since I got the address from M. Johnson's PA. Johnson is one of Papa's 'silent investors'—’silent’ because they never make any public appearances. Their investment alone makes up 20 percent of our capital, which makes them collectively the third major shareholder of Lux Corp, but no one knows of their existence, or their involvement with Lux Corp. I've never met one, but Papa talks about them a lot, especially M. Johnson—mostly because his pocket is the deepest, and he's the most silent. Which makes him the perfect buyer for the ring. Not that I'm sparing any thoughts for the mafia's feelings, nor do I care about his stupid rules; I just don't feel parti
[Juliette’s POV] Papa? I called out to the silhouette. I know it’s my father. But he didn’t respond. He just stood there. I reached out a hand to grab something so I could haul myself over to him, but my fist was empty. My feet were working hard to get me to him, but no matter how hard I ran, I couldn’t seem to reach him. Papa! I yelled desperately. But there was only silence. Do it for me, Juliette… Honour my promise to the Virtus. Papa’s voice filled my head. Papa! I cried out to him, watching helplessly as his kind smile melted into the evil grin of a gargoyle. I jerked back with disgust and the devil’s face swirled into a cloud of vivid colours. I panicked and screamed, Papa! Wait, don’t go! What’s the truth? You didn’t owe Ralph Virtus anything, did you? Help me, Juliette…His pleading voice faded as the vibrant colours morphed into a giant ball of crystal white light that consumed me…. I pushed my lids open. A vast creamy ceiling greeted me. Realising that I was lying do
[Juliette’s POV] Raised by a strict and conventional father, I’ve dated only two guys–in secret of course–and all the kisses never start with me. But with Ralph Virtus, I'm turning into one of those feckless girls that Papa would refer to as the Dime Girls—cause they always find a way into a guy's pockets, like a dime. Fine, I'm a Dime Girl. I want to go after what I want without giving a shit about consequences—and what I want now is Ralph Virtus. I want his hands and lips all over me. I want him to touch me in places that would make me burn…. Juliette, don't you even think about it! Not even once! A voice like Papa's rang fiercely in my ears. I pulled away as though I was scalded. But the enigmatic devil sitting before me held my gaze, refusing to let me go. The print of his lips on mine grew stronger as raw passion shot from his eyes. I want you, Juliette, those fierce eyes called out to me, their brown swirls and black irises pulling me in, making my insides flutter and m
[Juliette’s POV] What the hell am I wearing?! I stared at the bathroom mirror, dumbfounded. Don’t get me wrong, I love LBDs, but this is a bit too ‘little’ for my body, which is already petite to begin with, and a tad too ‘dark’ for my taste—the leather and pointy studs crowding the straps and the waistband are giving off the biker girl's vibes, which is fine, until my petite-sized breasts are spilling from the deep neckline like mega size boobs, which makes me feel like… a fucking Dime Girl. Immediately, I thought of the black nightie—and then of course the amazing sex last night. Shit, I can almost feel him inside me now, lodged deep and hard…. An electrifying shiver shot up my spine, seizing my breath. I gripped the vanity counter to steady myself as the heat of desire coursed through my veins. Damn it, Juliette, get your shit together! You’ve done the deed, and his seed is inside you now. So move on! He already did, so you should too! I drew in stuttering deep breaths to coa
[Juliette’s POV] The Virtus mansion is not a mansion at all—it’s a frickin haunted castle. Unlike the Lux mansion, it looks old and tired like an expired king, resting on a hilltop, guarded by considerably green grasslands on each side, and sparsely fenced by different types of vegetation that are considerably trimmed. I stared at my new home and a bad taste seeped into my mouth. This place is another reason to hate my new life. I scoffed inwardly. Revamp Papa's hotel? The Mafia King should revamp his humble abode instead.Wait. Papa’s money shouldn't be used on the enemy. I'd better keep my trap shut, just as his highness wanted. The car entered the porch and a familiar face came into view, and my new life just got three times worse. I got out of the car, and the nun warrior rushed forward to the Mafia King, who was moving around the hood. But the second she opened her mouth to speak, the index finger of 'wait a sec' shot up and then her boss whipped out his vibrating phone wi
[Juliette's POV]"Put me down!" I cried, and I was dropped on the bed. The second my back hit the soft sheets, my hands were pinned above my head, and my body was pressed against the mattress with his. My anxiety skyrocketed. "Get off me!" I pushed at him, trying to conceal the fact that his masculine scent and body heat was turning me on. Did he hit the gym after work? How can he be in the office the whole day and still smell of fresh oak and spice as though he had a run through the woods? And his handsome face irked me too! It made my insides flutter…. "You want me, Juliette…," he muttered hoarsely, his eyes boring into mine. "No, I don't! And let go of me!" I spat and tried to wriggle free to prove it. "Yes, you do. Your eyes betrayed you." His grip tightened. Pain shot to my elbow, numbing my cries, freezed my movements. In that brief moment, he pulled off his tie in one swift motion and twirled it around my wrists"What the hell are you doing?" I cried out in alarm, twisti
[Chatri’s POV]The EMERGENCY sign was still lit up. Chatri couldn’t tear his gaze away from it, making sure the light doesn’t go out Across him, seated on the row of plastic chairs, nestled safely between his wife and his mother, his precious fourteen-year-old daughter was praying hard for her saviour too. It was near his heart. Guilt burned the back of her eyes. Ralph-kun… I blamed you for destroying the peace that we’ve paid with our blood and sweat to get. Yet, you did not leave me alone. You fought by my side. You kept your word. With your life. Is this the root of your men’s loyalty? Three hours ago, when they got to the van, her daughter was a crying mess, her almost naked body would have been in full display if it weren’t for that bloodied jacket. Ralph Virtus was sprawled at the van’s entrance, hanging on by a thread. Chatri had to get in the chopper. Footsteps snapped him back to the silent hallway. The ex-mob leader turned to them and Ralph-kun’s right-hand man was mo
[Juliette’s POV]“My father has brought us to the next level—there’s no doubt about it. But as you can see, the charts do not lie. Lux Corp will not survive the casino’s first quarter if we sit back and do nothing.”I gazed firmly around the room. These so-called shareholders of Lux Corp. I need to break their resistance and knock some sense back into them. The oldest one of the group cleared his throat and muttered in a haughty slow pace, “So what you’re saying is: remove Harold Lux as Chairman and put you in charge.” Another guy quickly added, “We don’t do this sort of thing.” Then, the third man snorted in derision. “I’m actually surprised that you gathered all of us here today without the Chairman. If he gets wind of this—.” “He won’t if none of us talk about it,” I snapped, frustration in my throat. What’s with the surprised looks and frowns of disapproval? Aren’t they as much of a businessman as Papa? Can’t they see the signs? The fucking obvious signs! Suddenly, Papa’s de
[Sarah’s POV]She can’t believe it. The unbeatable, ever invincible Don Ralph—the monster in the devil skin; a heartless murderer with the killer sense of an Olympic shooter; king of the world’s most ferocious mafia groups—is completely useless against an infant that’s less than an hour’s old. If it weren’t for Sarah’s fierce insistence and fearsome glare, he wouldn’t even hold his own child. ‘What if I break his neck?’ whispered the poor man, his eyes unable to stray from the tiny creature in his frozen arms. ‘Stop it,’ snapped the caretaker. ‘Sway gently, and you’ll be fine.’ She glanced at the bed and Juliette, who was sleeping soundly, and then back at the man, who would probably feel as though he’s on top of the world right now. Is he going to cry? ‘So what’s his name?’ asked Sarah, swiftly diverting those tears from crystalising. Without looking up, he muttered, ‘Milo.’ Then, he glanced at his sleeping wife and a proud smile appeared. ‘Milo Virtus. The first of the many.’
[Juliette’s POV]‘I am not selling anything.’ Papa’s eyes were filled with so much distaste, I felt ashamed for calling myself his heir. ‘I’m surprised that I have to remind you of the rules now. You wanted a vacation, and I gave you one. Now, you can’t even remember the simplest thing.’ My mouth opened, my explanation ready like a debate team, but I clamped my lips tight. He doesn’t want to hear anything right now. Right now, he only wants to vent. We’re losing money fast since twenty of our suppliers had suddenly asked for a price review.‘I do remember them, Papa,’ I murmured sourly. ‘Then why are you even suggesting that we sell off our least money-making businesses?’ he demanded angrily. Because that could stop more money from going out! My mind was screaming like a child being blamed for something that she didn’t do. Isn’t it common sense? When things get rough, tighten your pockets! Or is this yet another test? But I’m so done with all the tests! With the baby about to co
[Harold’s POV]SLAM!The sixty-ish fist slammed on the antique desk with the strength of a forty-year-old boxer. Even in his experience, there’s a limit to how much he can take. How did this happen? How did it slip by him unnoticed? The casino. He’d lost track. Damn his old man’s genes. They’re so useless, they made him useless as well. ‘You had no problems with the price for decades. Now, out of the blue you want—not one percent, not two—but a three percent hike?’ His knuckles were paling, bearing all the rage which only kept spiking. The calm voice at the other end of the phone irked Harold further. ‘My apologies, Mr. Lux. But you know how this works—we can’t hold down the price for any longer,’ replied the thirteenth supplier. ‘It’s been three decades since our last review. We hope you understand.’ Everyone wants his understanding. What about theirs? He’s cash strapped! Whose fault is it? If he didn’t build the casino for these bloodsuckers, he wouldn’t be stuck! If they weren’t
[Juliette’s POV]And then it crashed onto me. Like a boulder. I observed those golden swirls in his eyes burning with hurt and that hurt clenched my chest. Utensils down and my mouth wiped, I reached across the table and covered his hand with mine. ‘Growing up, I imagine the Virtuses as cold-blooded monsters,’ I began. Those brown irises dilated with fury, and I slipped my fingers through that large hand and rubbed my skin against his to calm the fire. ‘Because of all the stories I’ve been fed—we’ve all been fed.’ To his tensed jaw, I muttered softly, ‘I must speak for everyone, Ralph.’ ‘You’re not telling me that your father was fed the same story. He came to me with the aim of stealing my family’s land, Juliette.’ ‘I’m not saying—.’ ‘Stop defending him!’ Ralph jerked his hand out of my grasp, fuming. But his eyes never left me, which was a good sign. So immediately, I leaned forward and pleaded, ‘I’m not defending him.’ ‘Then what the fuck are you doing?’ ‘I’m trying to te
[Juliette’s POV]I smiled at the man gently resting his hand on my belly, so careful, so timidly, I almost couldn’t recognise him. Is this Ralph Virtus, the Mafia King? The one whom everyone calls The Devil? The handsome beast with the wits of a chess master. Those cold, fierce eyes were filled with so much fear that I wanted to hug him and squeeze those bad thoughts out of him. Those same golden brown eyes now widened in amazement as they swung up to me. ‘It moved.’ I chuckled and covered his hand with mine. ‘Of course it does, silly.’ He gazed at my stomach, his pupils dilating some more. ‘It’s kicking.’ He looked up, worried. ‘Does it hurt?’ I shook my head. ‘My chest just feels tight when it happens.’ Then, his ears were on my belly, listening intently. As amusing as it was watching his face change colour every second, I can’t help but worry that the next second something will happen to destroy this peaceful moment. As though he read my thoughts, his attention was back on
[Ralph’s POV]‘D…Did you just—I knew it.’ Her eyes were shaking with such low confidence, I almost couldn’t recognise them. ‘You find me annoying now….’ Her hands slid off my chest in defeat. Is this what a baby does to a woman? ‘I did not say that.’ As soon as I heard my voice, I froze again. Shit—that was cold. Quick—correct it. ‘I mean—I don’t mean what I said.’ I tried to grab her hand but missed it. ‘Juliette….’ Her shoulders were shaking too. ‘Jesus… you’re not crying now, are you?’ What? No. That came out wrong again. What the fuck is wrong with me? She spun around in full rage. With tears gushing down her steamed face, she jabbed a finger at my shoulder. ‘YES! I’m crying like a clingy pathetic woman! And whose fault is it? Who put this thing inside me?!’ She pointed at her round belly protruding proudly through her skirt. “WHO?!”I laughed. It was unplanned. Before I knew it, I was already holding my waist to steady myself. My shoulders were shaking, my chest was rumbli
[Ralph’s POV]I blinked at the Hong Kong mob leader and his voice returned. ‘... do you think?’ What were we discussing? Something that reminded me of Juliette and the baby. Of my fears. Of the baby dying inside Juliette’s stomach… or Juliette dying with the baby—yes. We were talking about that old fox and his shady business. My finger stopped tapping. ‘I’m closing all of it down.’ ‘No offence, nong Ralph.’ The Thai leader burst through. ‘My elders love khun Lux. It won’t be easy to shut them down.’ Chinh was frowning too. ‘You close down one, another will pop up. Who’ll say no to money?’‘Money and power,’ mumbled Andrei. ‘I’ve told you before. Harold Lux is well-connected. I can’t have the boys going against me. There are many who’ll have my head and you said that you’ll handle it. So all I have to do is focus on protecting my family from the ollies.’ ‘And this doesn’t change that,’ I repeated firmly. ‘I failed to see how,’ muttered the cool and collected Isamu. ‘Harold-san gi
