Before dawn, Lila was able to return without catching anyone's attention. She served breakfast to the queen just like she had always been doing and reported that the Arcana would not be able to adhere to Emery’s request because the other members were sent on individual missions. Thus, it was up to her to plan on what to do.
Just when Emery thought that she'd be having only one headache to worry about that morning, Prime Minister Korun came to her doorstep and demanded to see her immediately. When he entered the chambers of the queen, he sat across her and looked at her with eyes filled with disappointment.
"I know you have heard of the king and his concubine's trip tomorrow," he stated, shaking his head.
Anger was very much obvious in his tone despite his voice being calm. And Emery immediately knew what he came for.
"Up until now, you are wearing that veil and failed to seduce the king. And now, you still have the luxury to eat when tomorrow, he will be leaving the palace with his concubine. Before we know it, that concubine would be the one bearing his child. You are such a disappointment!"
Emery was not in the mood to argue with her father since she was already too stressed out about what to do with the king's leave. Adding him to the list would drain her remaining energy so she simply chose to be quiet and just listen to her father’s bickering. But then, she could not help but be infuriated towards him because the way he acted was just audacious. Despite the fact that he never visited her and her mother before, he did not even attend his wife’s funeral, and most of all, he did not even show up once and tell her to live with him in the capital.
With a simple letter stating that one of her mother’s relatives was going to adopt her that was actually staged by the Arcana, the prime minister simply agreed and showed no empathy at all. He did not even send a single penny to support her and yet when he found the perfect chance to make use of her, he just appeared out of nowhere and asked to be reunited with Emery. He was just unbelievable.
"You better make a way for you to join the trip," the prime minister hissed before storming out from her quarters. He did not even give her the chance to speak a word…well, it was not like she wanted to speak either so she just brushed her worries away and looked at her breakfast.
While finishing her food and doing some brainstorming alone in her mind, Emery came to think of a plan that would somehow work. She summoned Lila into her chambers and discussed the matters of her plan.
"I'll be going with the king and his concubine on their trip. Keep an eye on my father and his subordinates for I am sure that they are up to something. No matter how little it is, if their actions are suspicious, do not leave it out when you report to me. I am sure that this trip will be in three days so be on the lookout," she explained briefly.
Lila was a maidservant so she'll be free in going here and there within the palace so Emery could rely on her as a lookout. Though she had a bad feeling about their plan, she did not negate it because there were just no available options for them to choose from, especially since they were the only two on that mission.
"Will you be alright alone?" Lila asked.
Emery smiled and replied, "I can manage."
With their plan already set, it was time for Emery to go and speak with the king regarding the trip. She took her to leave the Inner Palace and headed to the King's Court where King Lawson usually spends his time working on governmental affairs.
"Your Highness, it is rare to see you here in the King's Court," the head eunuch stated upon meeting the queen.
"I simply wanted to speak with the king. Does he has time to spare?" she politely asked.
The head eunuch was a bit taken aback at the gentle response of the queen. He thought that she would be intimidating and scary as she was described in the rumors that spread throughout the palace and even outside. But with that short interaction, his first impression of her started to change.
"Y-Yes, Your Highness. He is taking a break inside," he responded.
He opened the sliding doors and let the queen enter before shutting them again. He cocked his head in confusion, questioning himself if the queen was just pretending to be kind or not. But he just shook his head after a while since that did not matter at all as long as he would not involve himself with the seemingly complicated affairs of the royalties.
Emery, on the other hand, found the king surrounded by scrolls piled up on top of his table. He seemed to be too focused on his work that he didn't notice the presence of the queen. It seemed that his so-called break was over but she did not have any plans to leave immediately.
She simply stood across the table and stared at him. Hearing that the king was the militaristic type, she first thought that he would resolve matters by shedding blood and would not even consider doing desk work but seeing how the king was working changed that thought. Now Emery was even more convinced as to why the Arcana was dedicated to protecting King Lawson—it was for the reason that he truly deserved the throne.
"What brought you here?" the king asked when he finally noticed Emery.
"Please, do finish your work first. I can wait," Emery responded.
However, the king insisted that she should speak up and finish whatever business she had with him. He set aside the quill and focused his attention on his unexpected guest. Thus, Emery told him her request.
"Please, let me accompany you to the Royal Villa," the queen stated.
"For what reason?"
"As the queen, I want to know more about you, Your Majesty, so I could be of help to you in any way."
King Lawson rested his chin on the back of his hand as he leaned back on his chair and his elbow resting on the armrest. He gazed at her. He thought of taking advantage of the situation to wring some information from the queen that seemed to be pressured by her clan to do her duty as the king's wife. And for sure, the queen visiting his office at that time was due to her clan ordering her to go with them on the trip.
"For my part, I see no problem if you are to come with us. However, Lady Hazel would feel uncomfortable with your presence so I'm afraid you cannot come."
Hearing his reply made Emery think that King Lawson seemed to want her to kneel in front of him and beg for his approval. If she did that, everything will sail smoothly, however, she did not do it. She would not go that far after her countless kneeling for the previous day she asked to spare Lila’s life.
"If you still insist that I should spill my father's plan, I, once again, apologize because I have nothing to tell you. My father does not trust me enough to tell me whatever he has in mind."
"You truly are good with your words that it scares me to believe you. No matter how much you beg, if you cannot give me what I want, then you will stay here in the palace."
King Lawson was firm and had no more interest in prolonging their conversation so he turned his attention back to his work.
"My king, I do not mind having the queen come with us." Royal Concubine Hazel entered the room after hearing their conversation. She curtsied and apologized, "It was not my intention to listen but as I wanted to visit you, my king, I overheard your conversation."
This time, the king stood from his seat and walked toward his concubine. He smiled at her and told her that she did not need to apologize for such a petty thing.
Though Emery did not like the situation, she still needed to use Lady Hazel so she could go with them on the trip. She rolled her eyes to the side as she watched all being lovey-dovey but she had to keep her emotions at bay.
"Royal Concubine Hazel, do accept my gratitude for giving me the permission to be with you on the trip going to the Royal Villa," she stated before excusing herself and leaving the King's Court. She did not want to suffocate herself from whatever interaction they would do. She might even vomit watching them.
As she walked into the hallway, there was a group of eunuchs who did not know of her presence and continued to mind their business.
"The rumors are true. The king does not recognize the Prime Minister's daughter as the queen. She is still even wearing her veil," one of them said. It was loud enough for Emery to hear and she came to a halt.
"If you have the luxury to speak about me behind my back, why not use that time instead to accomplish your tasks?" she interrupted.
The three eunuchs were shocked and embarrassed. They all knelt on the ground and beg for forgiveness, asking the queen to spare their lives. Emery rolled her eyes to the side and left them without saying another word. The rumors going around the palace were getting on her nerves that her patience was likely to snap but dealing with each one of them would just be a waste of time.
On her way to the Royal Garden, Emery bumped into her father who was carrying a box of scrolls.
"It seems that you talked with His Majesty. Did you convince him?" he asked while staring down at her.
Emery lowered her gaze and replied, "Yes, father."
Prime Minister Korun was satisfied with the result and decided to go about his way, leaving Emery heaving a sigh. As the prime minister and the father of the current queen, he wanted to take control of the palace just like what he had been doing even if that meant using his only daughter.
Emery felt more than burdened compared to the previous missions she took before because now, being an undercover assassin and a queen at the same time seemed to be incompatible for her. It may not have been so long since she sat on the throne beside the king but being the queen felt like shackles on one hand and one arm because she could not move as she wishes due to the eyes of the people looking at her. In addition, her impatience started to build up as she started to feel more and more dominated and weak for acting submissive all the time. That was not Emery at all.
To calm her angered nerves, the queen took a deep inhale and exhale as she enjoyed the company of the blooming water lilies by the pond. She distracted herself by stating the color of each water lily in her mind.
"Your Highness, I already prepared your things for your trip." Lila came to report and when she drew closer to the queen, she added, "I have hidden your daggers within your royal robes in case you need them."
Emery faced her maidservant and reminded her to only observe and never do anything that would blow up her cover. She knew that Lila had the tendency to act on her own and if she is caught, it'd be bad news for the both of them. And of course, she did not want to get her in trouble because she might not come on time to save her.
Just when they were discussing the details of their plan, Emery saw the king and his royal concubine walking toward the garden. From an outsider's perspective, seeing the two of them would make one think that the royal concubine was the queen who was perfectly fit for the majestic king, whom every soldier admired. And at their current situation, Emery seemed to be the royal concubine totally ignored by the king. However, for her, such a thing did not matter at all.
That aside, Emery did not want to spoil their moment together so she decided to go back to the Inner Palace.
"We'll continue speaking about this matter in the Inner Palace," she stated before standing from her seat and walking away from the gazebo.
As she came across them by the footbridge, Emery did not bother to curtsy at the presence of the king and simply walked straight ahead.
Her action made Royal Concubine Hazel wonder why the aura surrounding the queen seemed to have changed. Though she knew that Emery was acting reserved after the wedding to probably get the attention of the king, it made her curious as to why she reverted to being a bit aggressive.
"She is finally showing her true colors," the king commented, who seemed to have sensed Emery’s aggressive aura.
Meanwhile, Lila asked Emery about her change of behavior. She thought that she was to act submissive so she wouldn't attract too much attention but that seemed to be not the case at all. Well, she did not expect the queen to be able to prolong the playacting in the first place so it was not a surprise for her.
"Those two are getting ahead of themselves just because I am being submissive. I don't like where this play is going so I'm changing my role," Emery replied as she clenched her fists, digging her nails into the flesh of her palm. Instead of a meek and weak queen, she will be that stoic type and in that way, she won’t be stepped upon by anyone.
Lila could not help but worry because Emery's short-tempered nature was slowly coming out after only a few days of trying to conceal it. But she also knew that the queen knew best that she had to conceal her real identity no matter what. Showing a bit of her real self would not blow up their cover, at least that was what she wanted to believe in.
Before the sun would rise in the east, the king, his royal concubine, and the queen departed from the palace to head to the Royal Villa of Hot Springs. They were accompanied by a platoon of soldiers to ensure the royalties' safety and it would take half a day for them to reach the said villa. Inside the carriage that was pulled by four black horses, there was an awkward silence. Emery was sitting across the king and Royal Concubine Hazel, wearing her dark green robes, and just, as usual, her veil covered the entirety of her face. The king had his eyes closed while Royal Concubine Hazel was looking out the window, probably wanting to avoid getting involved with Emery who was staring at the two with an eyebrow raised. "Be not reserved to show affection with each other. I may be the queen but I won't pay much attention to it," Emery spoke to break the silence. Besides, she, too, started to be burdened by the heavy awkwardness. She did not also like to share the same carriage with the
Emery took a long stride and immediately covered the maidservant's mouth with her hand as she pressed her against the wall. With her sharp gaze and a fake tone of voice, she warned her. "Keep this mouth shut or else, I'll cut your tongue and make sure no word will come from you," she threatened. The maidservant nodded a few times as tears filled her eyes. She saw Emery's katana behind her and it made her scared even more. And since she was given no choice but to keep quiet, she could only do such or she’ll definitely suffer. Out of nervousness, the maidservant lost her strength and fell to the ground. Emery kept her eyes on her while stepping back to reach the pot of food. "If you're gonna cry, cover your mouth before I do it myself," she stated. The scared maidservant spared no time and covered her mouth with both hands. She was just given the order to get more food for the king and his concubine and yet this was happening to her. If only she had known, she should not have volunt
With the commotion in the Royal Villa of Hot Springs, King Lawson had his concubine sealed in her chambers as he helped his men seek out the person who shot the arrow. He had already expected the presence of assassins but what he did not expect was that there were two of them that seemed to work under different masters. As this trip was kept a secret and was only known within the palace, he suspected that these two were connected with someone who worked under him. Somehow, he had a strong feeling that the maidservant who served them food that morning was the same person as the assassin involved in the house storage burning incident. He was not really sure about it since only their body stature was similar. Either way, he needed them captured. Meanwhile, Emery was able to escape from her pursuers. Without any hesitation, she made her way back to the villa but on her way, she bumped into someone clad in dark apparel. With the bow in his hand, she knew that he was the culprit who shot
Emery and Lila barely made it to the palace on time. Not knowing that the king and his concubine were also arriving, Emery did not bother changing into her royal robes because she was too tired to go through the ordeal of wearing extravagant dresses as well as arranging her hair longer than before. Lila left her alone in her chambers so she could go back to her work before everyone would suspect her of her absence. However, there was one thing that she had forgotten to tell about Emery when Jadeite was pretending to be her. And that was the fact that Jadeite caused a huge wreck in the Inner Palace, claiming that she was supposed to be with the king. When the sun had already set on the west, the king had arrived at the palace which was a surprise because they were supposed to be staying in the villa for three days. Just when he was about to escort Royal Concubine Hazel to the East Palace, he noticed the maidservants carrying wrecked chairs, tables, and ruined clothes. He, then, asked
Silence ruled over the king and queen as they stared into each other's eyes, still trying to comprehend the situation they brought themselves into. Now that she could see him up close, Emery saw how mesmerizing yet dangerous-looking his pair of amber eyes was. Somehow, its color reminded her of the afternoon when her mother passed away. However, without the veil, she felt like he could see right through her, and there she was, ignorant of what he had in mind. It was frustrating for her, of course. But Emery was not the type of person who could stare at someone's eyes for too long. So she was the first one to look away. She slowly reached out for her veil and spoke with a small, awkward smile, "Let's pretend that didn't happen." She got back on the bed with her back facing the king. She clutched at her veil as she covered her face back and she could not help but grit her teeth to suppress the scream she wanted to let out at that very moment. Her blush crept on her porcelain-like c
Hearing those words from the royal concubine convinced Emery that love was indeed scary for her. She believed that having such a feeling would make even the nicest person become the worst. And a question settled at the back of her mind; will Lady Hazel become the worst version of herself now that she sees her, the queen, as a rival? A small smile crept at the edges of the queen's lips as she turned on her heels and was about to leave the gazebo. She stopped by the stairs and turned her head a little. "I see no wrong in your love for His Majesty," she stated. "However, if that selfishness ever harms the king or his people, it would be better to stop now." After saying that, she left the royal concubine alone in the garden. She was not just in the mood to talk about things such as love or rivalry since such small talks were not appealing to her. On her way back to the Inner Palace, Emery saw General Kyan leaving the royal court. Thus, she decided to visit the king. Upon opening the d
Before Princess Garnet, King Lawson's elder sister, could enter the palace, Lady Hazel was appointed to accompany her all throughout her stay in the Silex Kingdom. The ministers were against that idea because such a role was supposed to be done by the queen and not by a mere concubine. However, with the insistence of King Lawson, the ministers could do nothing but mutter to themselves while the king had his back on them. "Won't Her Highness be enraged by this arrangement?" Lady Hazel asked. She was a bit worried that this would be seen as a taunt against the queen that might lead to a fight between them. The king was in her chambers having his break before heading back to the royal court. Hearing the words coming from his concubine made him smile because he could tell that she was still acting humble despite the big role she was assigned to. With his head resting on his concubine's lap and his eyes shut, he replied, "She does not have the right to be mad. I do not want to entrust su
The very next morning, Princess Garnet had arrived at the palace. Just as she expected, she was greeted by a lot of maidservants and a beautiful noble lady. Though, she was quite taken aback because the robes worn by the woman in front of her were not the royal robes of the queen. Though, she simply brushed that detail when she realized something. There was one missing person who was supposed to greet her as well... her brother. "Princess Garnet, welcome to the Silex Kingdom," Lady Hazel greeted as she curtsied. "Allow me to accompany and be of help to you during your stay." The princess smiled from ear to ear and curtsied as well. "To be with the queen is such an honor." Lady Hazel flinched upon hearing how she was addressed. Her body stiffened and her tongue froze. She did not know how to respond to that. She did not know if she needed to correct the princess but she thought that it might be rude of her to do so. Thus, she simply kept quiet about it. Meanwhile, Emery ran in the
It was already night time but the grandest brothel house here in the Realgar Kingdom was very much alive like it was the peak of the day. Noblemen continued to enter with much anticipation but I cannot truly tell if it was because they were planning to rise against the king or if it was for the women who will soon serve them or probably both. It was a huge party to cover up the noblemen’s real purpose of gathering here in this pleasure house. Thus, it was also a chance for me to test my girls’ ability to gather intelligence without getting caught. Beneath the main brothel, I gathered the 10 ladies I had been training for four years now for their briefing before they would go out there and do their very first mission. “I am reminding you again that all you have to accomplish this night is to gather information regarding the supposed rebellion. Serve the guests with food, wine, sweet talks, lip service, and whatnot but never engage in sexual activities. I forbid you to be in that kind
Emery, then, turned on her heels and started to away. Taking only a few steps, the king finally spoke. “Your accusations against them will be considered treason. To add up to that, you are still the prime suspect in killing the royal concubine. If you turn your back now without proving your innocence, you won’t be able to leave this place alive.” The assassin did not bother listening to whatever he had to say and still continued to leave. With her position as queen taken away from her, she had to pretend to leave the kingdom. She also needed to speak with the Arcana Heads to ask what shall be her next move with all the situations going beyond her control. “Your stubbornness annoys the hell out of me.” King Lawson, whose patience just snapped a few moments ago, grabbed Emery by the arm and dragged her into the tent. He strictly instructed the royal soldiers to make sure that no one would ever dare step inside the tent until he says so. Upon entering, Emery was a bit taken aback when
After the sudden appearance of the queen and Lady Mica, they met with King Lawson inside the tent, and even though he never said a word, his icy gaze said it all. He was not at all pleased with their visit as if this was some kind of vacation trip. “Your Majesty, I apologize for not telling you ahead of time about our arrival. I was simply worried about what was going on in here so I came,” Queen Natalia stated. Clearing her throat, Lady Mica intercepted since she noticed that her son was not convinced of the queen’s reason. “Lawson, that is not the way to treat your new queen. The two of you just got married and did not even spend your honeymoon in peace. At least, appreciate her efforts.” Clicking his tongue, the king shifted his attention back to the reports and said, “Mother, would you step out for a while? I need to speak with Natalia alone.” Lady Mica was about to negate but the queen gave her a reassuring look that everything would be just fine. Thus, the king’s mother left
After a few days of travel along with a few royal soldiers, King Lawson was able to reach the western border. Just like what Vasmir reported, the planes that used to be ablaze were now only covered with the remnants of the war. He could see some of the soldiers cleaning up and gathering the dead bodies but before he could go and see what was going on beyond the borders, he headed to the campsite of the general. Seeing the king wearing his armor, all the royal soldiers got on their knees and lowered their heads. King Lawson simply passed them by and came face to face with General Kyan. Getting off his horse, he entered the tent and the general followed. “I have always regarded you as one of the greatest soldiers that the kingdom could offer. But hearing that you forbid the soldiers to fight alongside the people of the Thorine Kingdom changed my mind. You are nothing but a coward,” the king commented as he took his seat and his chin leaning on the back of his hand. Instead of getting
Emery did not want to force General Kyan into her plan but she had no plans of staying put either. Stepping out of the tent, she walked towards the battlefield but when she felt that the soldiers whom she just led a few hours ago, she stopped in her tracks and faced them. “Our mission is considered as a failure and I apologize for dragging you into a decision I made for myself. But I won’t be apologizing for the decision I made. Our mission has ended, thus, I am no longer your leader so wait for the general’s further instructions.” After saying that, she turned on her heels and scanned the vicinity, hoping to locate where the general of the Damas Kingdom was. It was not hard to spot him despite the wide horizon as her eyes reflected their group backing away with their weapons raised above their heads. The royal soldiers, however, were a bit puzzled at the sudden change of mind of their enemies. And for the ceasefire to be led by the well-known undefeatable general, they found it rat
Emery still did not budge and was on the verge of shooting the arrow right in the face of the general. However, she clicked her tongue when he managed to push away the royal soldiers surrounding him. With a thunderous roar, he claimed, “You will never win this war! The soldiers of the Thorine Kingdom shall back us up and your kingdom shall be eaten by fire!” Emery cocked her head and slowly dropped her weapon. She, then, walked towards the general with a crease on her forehead. “With what you said, am I right if I say that you are associated with the Thorine Kingdom? But how could that be possible now that Princess Natalia just became the queen of our kingdom?” Instead of getting a decent answer from him, Emery twitched as the laughter of the general rang in her ears. It was a burst of laughter to mock her as if she was the craziest woman in front of him. “She married him to kill your king and conquer Silex with our help!” This time, it was the general and the soldiers’ turn to l
When the night embraced the land, Emery briefed the soldiers first on what they should do upon arriving at the site of their ambush. Though, she started to feel a bit uncomfortable as she felt their stares at her as if they were becoming more and more suspicious of who she was. Her heart almost skipped a beat when one of them took the courage to ask about her identity since it seemed like it was their first time to see her. And to avoid that topic, she simply stated that it was not the right time to know her since they were about to do something important that could either give their side an advantage or not. She even almost got busted when a few of them claimed that she looked familiar. If she were to be too defensive, it would make them more suspicious. “Captain, the general of the enemies had arrived in their camp,” the scout came to report, helping Emery get out of the tight situation. She stood from her seat and grabbed her spear. “Everyone, in your positions. At exact midnight
Emery stared at the royal physician who was on his knees right in front of her. She did not know what it was all about but since he dragged her into an empty room, she thought that there was something going on. However, she never dared speak up and ask about it as she still felt a bit discouraged to do anything after witnessing the king getting married to another woman. “Your Highness, please forgive me. I… I know what I did is something unforgivable and I deserve to lose my head for lying but… Your Highness, I beg for your mercy,” he pleaded. He bowed to her until his forehead touched the cold floor. His lips quivered as he anticipated the reply of the queen who still remained quiet after a few minutes of silence. “I am no longer the queen of this kingdom so do not act so formal. But that aside, what lie are you saying?” The royal physician gulped. He could feel the tips of his fingers growing cold but this could only be the last chance he had to redeem himself so he had to speak
Not wanting to be recognized, Emery immediately turned away, swinging her sword towards an enemy. She did not dare look back because she just saw a glint of shock in the general’s eyes despite the few seconds of looking into his very eyes. With a grunt escaping her mouth, she lunged towards another enemy and swung her weapon down to injure his leg. Her enemy fell to his knees, giving Emery the chance to slit his throat and end his life. She kept chanting in her mind not to pay much attention to what she just saw but her anxious heart was unsettled. The thought of her getting arrested at that very moment was not just the best idea. Just then, she felt someone behind her but before she could turn on her heels to see who it was, the general spoke. “What did you come here for?” he asked just loud enough for her to hear. Emery was able to feel a bit relieved when she heard his voice without even a hint of threat. She simply hoped that he would not turn her into the king, at least, not f
