Emery treaded with as much caution as she could as she hurried to the West Palace. It did not take her much effort to conceal her presence from the eyes of the palace guards which made her think twice about the security of the place. However, that was not her concern at the moment since she had to finish her mission as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the king was on his way to visit the queen at the Inner Palace upon hearing the news that she was locking herself up. He did not want to be involved with her as much as possible but if the ministers would hear about this news, they would start bickering at him for the nth time and it would be annoying. Thus, he was given no choice but to go and see the queen know the reason for her unreasonable tantrums.

Lila, who heard that the king was on his way, told the other maidservants to never let the king inside the queen's chambers as per the wish of the queen herself. Upon leaving a stern instruction, she hurried to the West Palace. Though she started to heave, she did not stop running until she reached the West Palace. Looking around, she could not spot the queen but she needed to do something or else she will be exposed in no time. She took off her red, long ribbon that tied her long braids and started to wave it above her head. It was a warning signal for Emery. To cover up her warning from the guards patrolling around the area, she danced as if she was out of her mind.

Emery was on top of the roof and saw the maidservant dancing. At first, she did not mind it all because she was trying to secure the scroll behind her sent by the Arcana. She even thought that the maidservant probably lost her mind as she shook her head while watching her turn around. However, seeing the maidservant’s dress that had a red stash of cloth wrapped around her abdomen, she came to realize that it was actually Lila since it was only her who was wearing a red stash that day. It was hard to look at what she was waving because it was dark but after a while, she got it.

She was already at that place, she didn't want to back out because it'll be hard to catch the culprit if she postponed catching him red-handed. Thus, she needed a distraction that would force even the king to be summoned to the place.

"Thanks for the warning," she mumbled to herself before stepping foot back on the ground with a faint sound.

She grabbed one of the lanterns and burned a cloth that she stripped off from her apparel. With the fire ignited bigger, she set the house storage on fire. Since it was made of wood, the fire spread quite fast and produced so much smoke. It even lit up half of the West Palace with its bright orange blaze. Several guards came rushing to the storage house with one of the ministers.

"No, no, no!" the minister yelled in despair as he watched the storage being eaten by fire. He was about to check on his collection but suddenly found his storage on fire. The weapons he tried so hard to collect in secret were inside the storage and if the fire was not put out immediately, they'd be damaged. Plus, it would be discovered since everyone thought that it was storage of woods, not illegally acquired weapons.

Emery, on the other hand, managed to pull out one of the boxes where gunpowder was kept. She wouldn't let it be burned or it'll cause a huge explosion. When she was about to spill them out on the ground and reveal the minister's crime, the royal soldiers surrounded her with their weapons pointed at her.

"A spy! She's definitely a spy! Don't let her get away!" the minister commanded. He was enraged but when Emery opened the wooden box, he grew pale and his voice that was so loud just vanished. The evidence was not only the box but also the scroll that contained the list of weapons collected and was named under the minister, which was confirmed by the people to whom the weapons originally came from.

Before the soldiers could reach where she stood, Emery flipped the box and the gunpowder scattered all over the ground. She also threw the scroll towards her incoming opponents to leave more than just one piece of evidence.

"Don't let anyone leave the premises!" King Lawson commanded. He was holding his sword and his eyes were fixed on the person whose face was covered by a mask. He only received a sudden report of a fire, which was suspicious enough but he did not expect to see a spy be involved with the matter.

Since Emery revealed what was kept inside the storage and the minister was held captive due to the king's command, there was no reason for her to stay there any longer. The pieces of evidence were already crystal clear and it was up to the king to do the rest. She ran to her right to avoid clashing with King Lawson.

This time, she drew out her sword to defend herself from the soldiers. When her first opponent came charging her way, she blocked his sword with her weapon before getting down and slid her foot on the ground, causing the soldier to fall on his back. Another one came and with one swift swing of her sword near the hilt of her opponent’s weapon, she was able to disarm him.

She sheathed her sword and raised her foot for a high kick that immediately knocked off the soldier unconscious on the ground. She did not dare inflict wounds on them or she will be seen as a real threat to the kingdom and it would be hard for her to move around if she was to be labeled as a person committing treason.

However, when Emery saw the king wanting to take her on himself, she ran away as fast as she could. King Lawson was a militaristic king and was a skilled swordsman. If she fights him now, her cover-up would be revealed and for sure, she'll face death on his hands. She made a quick turn at the dark pathway that led to the direction where she took when she came from the Inner Palace.

Leaving the West Palace, she climbed back to the roof where she could hide away from the sight of the soldiers coming after her. Trained under these circumstances, Emery remained calm and was able to go back to her quarters unscathed.

"Your Highness, I apologize but I must enter to check on you," Lila stated, who just came from the West Palace, before opening the sliding doors and shutting them immediately.

She rushed to her side and helped her put on her royal dress before someone catches her in the act.

"You didn't get wounded, did you?" she asked in a whisper.

"No worries, not a single scratch can be found on me," Emery replied. It was a huge relief because if she ever acquired an injury, she'll be suspected, especially that the king was very keen.

After settling, Emery was so much curious about what was going on after the commotion she created. If the minister was not apprehended, she'll be the one to behead him but she was hoping that the king was taking the matter into his own hands. She was not able to sleep that night because of the thoughts bothering her. But now, she needed to lie low as of the moment to conceal her involvement in the incident.

However, the very next morning while she was dressing up with the help of Lila and other maidservants, the king barged in without any notice. With the sudden visit, Emery just grabbed some cloth to cover her face.

"Take the queen's head maidservant and take her for investigation," the king commanded.

His soldiers came from behind him and two of them held Lila in both hands and were about to take her away. But Emery raised her hand to stop the soldiers from leaving her chambers without giving her any kind of explanation of whatever was going on.

"Your Majesty, may I know why you are taking away my maidservant?" she politely asked.

The king pulled her hand towards him to give way for the soldiers.

Lila pleaded to be spared on whatever fault she had done as she was taken away from the queen's quarters. Still, her cries were ignored.

"She is a suspect in last night's incident," the king replied. "So we need to investigate."

That being said, the king left the queen's quarters without waiting for a response from her.

Emery hurried in dressing up so she could run after them before they could torture Lila. She was the only one she trusted within the palace and if she loses her, she might also lose her composure.

Putting on her veil, she rushed to the Soldier's Hall where the questioning was being held. Though she was only about to enter the premises, she could hear the cries that wrenched her heart.

Upon entering, she immediately scanned the ground and saw Lila tied up with her hands raised above her head. She was crying and it pained Emery to see blood staining her porcelain cheeks. She ran to her side and without sparing any seconds, she knelt on the ground. She even had her forehead touch the ground to show how desperate she was.

"Your Majesty, my maidservant did nothing wrong. I ask for your mercy to let her go," she begged. At this time, only the king had the authority on what to do with Lila so she had to behave and not get on his bad side.

Though she sounded so weak and pathetic, Emery set that aside just to save the life of her trusted subordinate.

"Your Highness, I am fine so you do not need to worry," Lila stated as her tears fell down her bruised cheek. However, Emery did not believe her words.

King Lawson raised an eyebrow as he walked towards his queen. With the tip of his sheathed sword, he lifted her head and asked, "She was seen in the West Palace before the fire broke out. The soldiers witnessed her doing some kind of dance that I think was a signal for someone. Yet why are you here begging for her life?"

The king, then, knelt on one knee to be of the same level as the queen. He badly had the urge to lift her veil because he wanted to see her expression; however, he managed to suppress himself from doing so.

"Could it be that you have something to do with the incident? Are you working with Minister Han in gathering weapons to commit treason?" he added.

"No, Your Majesty, I would not dare go against you. Lila is the person I am closest with inside this palace and she is my comfort. As for her presence at the West Palace, it was I who sent her there to dance as a punishment because she angered me."

Emery wished so hard that the king should just go and bite her lie.  However, seeing the stoic expression of the king, she knew she did not convince him enough so she had to try harder.

"Your Majesty, let me be so bold to say what I have in mind. As you decided to be with your concubine instead of me, I felt so much loneliness upon entering this new place. Thus, I beg your mercy to not take away the only comfort I have."

After saying those words, she once again bowed before the king. Though behind her veil, she was actually throwing stares of daggers at him. Truth be said, he was the type of person that Emery finds to be the hardest one to deal with.

Her words struck King Lawson that he was at a loss of what to say. He did ignore her, left her during their wedding night, and didn't even see her face out of anger with the ministers as well as consideration for Lady Hazel. He stood on both feet and turned his back on her.

"Release the maidservant," he commanded.

As he walked away from the two, he stole a glance at the queen's covered face. Though he was not at all interested in her romantically, his curiosity in knowing what she looked like and who she actually was started to grow. Burying that at the back of his mind, he turned his attention to the soldier behind him.

"Have you found that spy yet?" he asked.

"We're still looking for her, Your Majesty," the soldier replied.

All King Lawson did was nod at his response. He was puzzled as he stared at the scroll that proved the crime of Minister Han. He cannot foretell if the spy from the other night was an ally or an enemy and the only way to get an answer was to find the spy.

When Emery and Lila arrived at the Inner Palace and were alone inside the queen's room, Lila knelt on the ground. "Thank you for saving my life," she cried. She thought that she wouldn't be able to see the next sunrise because the king seemed to have seen through her despite her cries. Her hands were still trembling with the shock of her near-death just a few minutes ago. Emery held both of her shoulders and helped her stand on both feet. She wiped off the tears from her cheeks and hugged her in return, a hug that told her she would never perish as long as she was with her. "I'm sorry you have to go through that," she apologized. Lila shook her head and told her that it was her responsibility to help her in her missions. And she knew that being discovered was something she must prepare herself for because it was a situation that she was not fully sure she could avoid for the rest of her life. "We only have each other inside the walls of this palace. We'll guard each other's backs,"

Before dawn, Lila was able to return without catching anyone's attention. She served breakfast to the queen just like she had always been doing and reported that the Arcana would not be able to adhere to Emery’s request because the other members were sent on individual missions. Thus, it was up to her to plan on what to do. Just when Emery thought that she'd be having only one headache to worry about that morning, Prime Minister Korun came to her doorstep and demanded to see her immediately. When he entered the chambers of the queen, he sat across her and looked at her with eyes filled with disappointment. "I know you have heard of the king and his concubine's trip tomorrow," he stated, shaking his head. Anger was very much obvious in his tone despite his voice being calm. And Emery immediately knew what he came for. "Up until now, you are wearing that veil and failed to seduce the king. And now, you still have the luxury to eat when tomorrow, he will be leaving the palace with his

Before the sun would rise in the east, the king, his royal concubine, and the queen departed from the palace to head to the Royal Villa of Hot Springs. They were accompanied by a platoon of soldiers to ensure the royalties' safety and it would take half a day for them to reach the said villa. Inside the carriage that was pulled by four black horses, there was an awkward silence. Emery was sitting across the king and Royal Concubine Hazel, wearing her dark green robes, and just, as usual, her veil covered the entirety of her face. The king had his eyes closed while Royal Concubine Hazel was looking out the window, probably wanting to avoid getting involved with Emery who was staring at the two with an eyebrow raised. "Be not reserved to show affection with each other. I may be the queen but I won't pay much attention to it," Emery spoke to break the silence. Besides, she, too, started to be burdened by the heavy awkwardness. She did not also like to share the same carriage with the

Emery took a long stride and immediately covered the maidservant's mouth with her hand as she pressed her against the wall. With her sharp gaze and a fake tone of voice, she warned her. "Keep this mouth shut or else, I'll cut your tongue and make sure no word will come from you," she threatened. The maidservant nodded a few times as tears filled her eyes. She saw Emery's katana behind her and it made her scared even more. And since she was given no choice but to keep quiet, she could only do such or she’ll definitely suffer. Out of nervousness, the maidservant lost her strength and fell to the ground. Emery kept her eyes on her while stepping back to reach the pot of food. "If you're gonna cry, cover your mouth before I do it myself," she stated. The scared maidservant spared no time and covered her mouth with both hands. She was just given the order to get more food for the king and his concubine and yet this was happening to her. If only she had known, she should not have volunt

With the commotion in the Royal Villa of Hot Springs, King Lawson had his concubine sealed in her chambers as he helped his men seek out the person who shot the arrow. He had already expected the presence of assassins but what he did not expect was that there were two of them that seemed to work under different masters. As this trip was kept a secret and was only known within the palace, he suspected that these two were connected with someone who worked under him. Somehow, he had a strong feeling that the maidservant who served them food that morning was the same person as the assassin involved in the house storage burning incident. He was not really sure about it since only their body stature was similar. Either way, he needed them captured. Meanwhile, Emery was able to escape from her pursuers. Without any hesitation, she made her way back to the villa but on her way, she bumped into someone clad in dark apparel. With the bow in his hand, she knew that he was the culprit who shot

Emery and Lila barely made it to the palace on time. Not knowing that the king and his concubine were also arriving, Emery did not bother changing into her royal robes because she was too tired to go through the ordeal of wearing extravagant dresses as well as arranging her hair longer than before. Lila left her alone in her chambers so she could go back to her work before everyone would suspect her of her absence. However, there was one thing that she had forgotten to tell about Emery when Jadeite was pretending to be her. And that was the fact that Jadeite caused a huge wreck in the Inner Palace, claiming that she was supposed to be with the king. When the sun had already set on the west, the king had arrived at the palace which was a surprise because they were supposed to be staying in the villa for three days. Just when he was about to escort Royal Concubine Hazel to the East Palace, he noticed the maidservants carrying wrecked chairs, tables, and ruined clothes. He, then, asked

Silence ruled over the king and queen as they stared into each other's eyes, still trying to comprehend the situation they brought themselves into. Now that she could see him up close, Emery saw how mesmerizing yet dangerous-looking his pair of amber eyes was. Somehow, its color reminded her of the afternoon when her mother passed away. However, without the veil, she felt like he could see right through her, and there she was, ignorant of what he had in mind. It was frustrating for her, of course. But Emery was not the type of person who could stare at someone's eyes for too long. So she was the first one to look away. She slowly reached out for her veil and spoke with a small, awkward smile, "Let's pretend that didn't happen." She got back on the bed with her back facing the king. She clutched at her veil as she covered her face back and she could not help but grit her teeth to suppress the scream she wanted to let out at that very moment. Her blush crept on her porcelain-like c

Hearing those words from the royal concubine convinced Emery that love was indeed scary for her. She believed that having such a feeling would make even the nicest person become the worst. And a question settled at the back of her mind; will Lady Hazel become the worst version of herself now that she sees her, the queen, as a rival? A small smile crept at the edges of the queen's lips as she turned on her heels and was about to leave the gazebo. She stopped by the stairs and turned her head a little. "I see no wrong in your love for His Majesty," she stated. "However, if that selfishness ever harms the king or his people, it would be better to stop now." After saying that, she left the royal concubine alone in the garden. She was not just in the mood to talk about things such as love or rivalry since such small talks were not appealing to her. On her way back to the Inner Palace, Emery saw General Kyan leaving the royal court. Thus, she decided to visit the king. Upon opening the d

It was already night time but the grandest brothel house here in the Realgar Kingdom was very much alive like it was the peak of the day. Noblemen continued to enter with much anticipation but I cannot truly tell if it was because they were planning to rise against the king or if it was for the women who will soon serve them or probably both. It was a huge party to cover up the noblemen’s real purpose of gathering here in this pleasure house. Thus, it was also a chance for me to test my girls’ ability to gather intelligence without getting caught. Beneath the main brothel, I gathered the 10 ladies I had been training for four years now for their briefing before they would go out there and do their very first mission. “I am reminding you again that all you have to accomplish this night is to gather information regarding the supposed rebellion. Serve the guests with food, wine, sweet talks, lip service, and whatnot but never engage in sexual activities. I forbid you to be in that kind

Emery, then, turned on her heels and started to away. Taking only a few steps, the king finally spoke. “Your accusations against them will be considered treason. To add up to that, you are still the prime suspect in killing the royal concubine. If you turn your back now without proving your innocence, you won’t be able to leave this place alive.” The assassin did not bother listening to whatever he had to say and still continued to leave. With her position as queen taken away from her, she had to pretend to leave the kingdom. She also needed to speak with the Arcana Heads to ask what shall be her next move with all the situations going beyond her control. “Your stubbornness annoys the hell out of me.” King Lawson, whose patience just snapped a few moments ago, grabbed Emery by the arm and dragged her into the tent. He strictly instructed the royal soldiers to make sure that no one would ever dare step inside the tent until he says so. Upon entering, Emery was a bit taken aback when

After the sudden appearance of the queen and Lady Mica, they met with King Lawson inside the tent, and even though he never said a word, his icy gaze said it all. He was not at all pleased with their visit as if this was some kind of vacation trip. “Your Majesty, I apologize for not telling you ahead of time about our arrival. I was simply worried about what was going on in here so I came,” Queen Natalia stated. Clearing her throat, Lady Mica intercepted since she noticed that her son was not convinced of the queen’s reason. “Lawson, that is not the way to treat your new queen. The two of you just got married and did not even spend your honeymoon in peace. At least, appreciate her efforts.” Clicking his tongue, the king shifted his attention back to the reports and said, “Mother, would you step out for a while? I need to speak with Natalia alone.” Lady Mica was about to negate but the queen gave her a reassuring look that everything would be just fine. Thus, the king’s mother left

After a few days of travel along with a few royal soldiers, King Lawson was able to reach the western border. Just like what Vasmir reported, the planes that used to be ablaze were now only covered with the remnants of the war. He could see some of the soldiers cleaning up and gathering the dead bodies but before he could go and see what was going on beyond the borders, he headed to the campsite of the general. Seeing the king wearing his armor, all the royal soldiers got on their knees and lowered their heads. King Lawson simply passed them by and came face to face with General Kyan. Getting off his horse, he entered the tent and the general followed. “I have always regarded you as one of the greatest soldiers that the kingdom could offer. But hearing that you forbid the soldiers to fight alongside the people of the Thorine Kingdom changed my mind. You are nothing but a coward,” the king commented as he took his seat and his chin leaning on the back of his hand. Instead of getting

Emery did not want to force General Kyan into her plan but she had no plans of staying put either. Stepping out of the tent, she walked towards the battlefield but when she felt that the soldiers whom she just led a few hours ago, she stopped in her tracks and faced them. “Our mission is considered as a failure and I apologize for dragging you into a decision I made for myself. But I won’t be apologizing for the decision I made. Our mission has ended, thus, I am no longer your leader so wait for the general’s further instructions.” After saying that, she turned on her heels and scanned the vicinity, hoping to locate where the general of the Damas Kingdom was. It was not hard to spot him despite the wide horizon as her eyes reflected their group backing away with their weapons raised above their heads. The royal soldiers, however, were a bit puzzled at the sudden change of mind of their enemies. And for the ceasefire to be led by the well-known undefeatable general, they found it rat

Emery still did not budge and was on the verge of shooting the arrow right in the face of the general. However, she clicked her tongue when he managed to push away the royal soldiers surrounding him. With a thunderous roar, he claimed, “You will never win this war! The soldiers of the Thorine Kingdom shall back us up and your kingdom shall be eaten by fire!” Emery cocked her head and slowly dropped her weapon. She, then, walked towards the general with a crease on her forehead. “With what you said, am I right if I say that you are associated with the Thorine Kingdom? But how could that be possible now that Princess Natalia just became the queen of our kingdom?” Instead of getting a decent answer from him, Emery twitched as the laughter of the general rang in her ears. It was a burst of laughter to mock her as if she was the craziest woman in front of him. “She married him to kill your king and conquer Silex with our help!” This time, it was the general and the soldiers’ turn to l

When the night embraced the land, Emery briefed the soldiers first on what they should do upon arriving at the site of their ambush. Though, she started to feel a bit uncomfortable as she felt their stares at her as if they were becoming more and more suspicious of who she was. Her heart almost skipped a beat when one of them took the courage to ask about her identity since it seemed like it was their first time to see her. And to avoid that topic, she simply stated that it was not the right time to know her since they were about to do something important that could either give their side an advantage or not. She even almost got busted when a few of them claimed that she looked familiar. If she were to be too defensive, it would make them more suspicious. “Captain, the general of the enemies had arrived in their camp,” the scout came to report, helping Emery get out of the tight situation. She stood from her seat and grabbed her spear. “Everyone, in your positions. At exact midnight

Emery stared at the royal physician who was on his knees right in front of her. She did not know what it was all about but since he dragged her into an empty room, she thought that there was something going on. However, she never dared speak up and ask about it as she still felt a bit discouraged to do anything after witnessing the king getting married to another woman. “Your Highness, please forgive me. I… I know what I did is something unforgivable and I deserve to lose my head for lying but… Your Highness, I beg for your mercy,” he pleaded. He bowed to her until his forehead touched the cold floor. His lips quivered as he anticipated the reply of the queen who still remained quiet after a few minutes of silence. “I am no longer the queen of this kingdom so do not act so formal. But that aside, what lie are you saying?” The royal physician gulped. He could feel the tips of his fingers growing cold but this could only be the last chance he had to redeem himself so he had to speak

Not wanting to be recognized, Emery immediately turned away, swinging her sword towards an enemy. She did not dare look back because she just saw a glint of shock in the general’s eyes despite the few seconds of looking into his very eyes. With a grunt escaping her mouth, she lunged towards another enemy and swung her weapon down to injure his leg. Her enemy fell to his knees, giving Emery the chance to slit his throat and end his life. She kept chanting in her mind not to pay much attention to what she just saw but her anxious heart was unsettled. The thought of her getting arrested at that very moment was not just the best idea. Just then, she felt someone behind her but before she could turn on her heels to see who it was, the general spoke. “What did you come here for?” he asked just loud enough for her to hear. Emery was able to feel a bit relieved when she heard his voice without even a hint of threat. She simply hoped that he would not turn her into the king, at least, not f
