The people of Silex Kingdom had been worried for quite some time when they had heard of the rumor that their king was not welcoming a queen in his palace. Now that the war had ended and they experienced peace for almost two years when their new king was seated on the throne, they believed that the next heir would become just like the ruler who brought peace and security. Thus, receiving news about the king leaving the seat of the queen empty was rather bad news.

However, on a day when the sun hid behind the cottony clouds, the kingdom of Silex rejoiced for their king had finally found a wife.

At the gates of the royal palace, Emery Trigon was waiting for the cue of her entrance. As the daughter of the kingdom's prime minister, she was the perfect candidate to take the role of the queen, which she didn't like at all. Before stepping to the capital city, she believed that she will enter the palace as a maidservant because that was the perfect cover-up for her mission. But only seven days before her departure from the Arcana headquarters, she was informed of the truth that she will be wedded to the kingdom’s savior.

She complained and pleaded to change plans, however, the Arcana was insistent on their original plan, giving Emery no choice but to follow.

"How long should I wait just to marry the king?" Emery asked. Her patience was not that long because she still held a grudge against the betrayal she received.

Her dark eyes were blazing with impatience as she turned her attention to her maidservant. However, her attention was caught by a woman behind her after hearing her clear her throat.

"A lady must keep her composure at all times despite the circumstances," Lady Hazel stated. She was supposed to be the crowned queen if only Emery did not return to the capital. Losing her supposed to be queen position, Lady Hazel’s father went on his knees in front of Emery, asking her to let his beloved daughter be the royal concubine. And since their family posed no threat at all, Emery gave her consent.

Lady Hazel was favored by the maidservants for not only having an angel’s beauty also for the reason of her having a kind and caring heart. And for a year now, she had been the king’s only sanctuary within the chaotic state of the palace.

Emery raised an eyebrow at her, thinking of a way on how to respond to her. She debated with herself if she should be friendly with her or not, and since she was in a bad mood, she chose to be verbally aggressive.

"A concubine should know when to shut her mouth. Do you hear me, Royal Concubine Hazel?"

Reiterating her position from that time on, Emery flashed a smile at her which the concubine did not even see before turning back to her position since the gates were being opened. Her maidservant fixed her red veil that shall be hiding her appearance from the moment she enters the palace and until the end of the wedding.

Lila tiptoed just to clip the veil on Emery's braided, black hair to secure it because the soon-to-be crowned queen was rather taller than the average height.

She, then, whispered, “Your Highness, a lady must learn to be patient.”

The soon-to-be queen rolled her eyes at her statement. When the horn was blown, Emery walked with careful steps on the aisle that led to the king's side. She minded every step she made because her burning red robes reached the floor and if she stepped on it, she will surely become the laughing stock of the palace. At the end of the aisle was the throne made of gold. Its sides were carved with wolves—the predators that best represent the current king.

As Emery walked past the ministers, her eyes darted to her father who was standing near the stairs that led to the higher platform where the king was. She was not fond of him or even happy to see that one of her parents was still alive. She only got to meet him after she entered the royal palace and she found him hateful during their first meeting. She wouldn't even address him as her father because of his absence during her growth. She considered him as that selfish old man with both gray hair and annoying facial hair, who cared nothing but only his high position.

She walked ahead and took careful steps as she got up on the staircase. Before standing by the king's side, she bowed thrice which symbolized respect, submission, and obedience. The gong hanging from two poles of the same height as a soldier was hit twice, a cue for the two to drink from the golden cup of wine as a symbol of being one. After the drinking of wine, the two bowed facing each other before the king faced the witnesses of their union.

"Emery of the Trigon clan is, from this day on, the queen of Silex!" the king announced as he raised the golden grail.

Taking a small sip from his cup, his ministers followed. After such, Emery stepped forward and bowed before the king’s people. After the solemn ceremony, the festive presentations prepared by the ministers started. Emery and the king sat side by side on the throne overlooking the whole place.

"You have my permission to take off your veil," King Lawson stated without glancing at his new queen. He seemed bored at the event despite the extravagant preparation done by the palace servers.

However, Emery simply replied, "I do not have such privilege to show my face to you, Your Majesty."

It was not her being too weak in front of the king but if she was not careful enough, she might get into his bad side. That would be too much work for her so she had two choices to choose from—to be on his good side or by simply being neutral. Moreover, taking off her veil herself would be seen as vulgar and disrespectful to the eyes of others because only the king was allowed to lift the veil of his queen.

"Then, never raise your veil until I do so," the king responded, sounding indifferent of the queen’s response.

He never wanted to be married to any woman from the Trigon clan, especially that his affection was supposed to be solely for the lady who was now only his royal concubine. However, the insistence of his officials forced him to take Emery as his queen instead, bothering him almost every day that it was not a good idea to simply marry a woman born in a family of humble birth. And for the sake of peace in his court and after speaking with Lady Hazel, he adhered to their wishes.

"I heard you were raised outside the capital. Is that really true?" the king asked after a while.

Emery nodded in response before answering, "Yes, Your Majesty. As my mother was sick, she decided to leave the capital."

"As far as I know, the prime minister never left the capital. Does that mean that you two saw each other today for the first time?"

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Emery caught a glimpse of the king's smirk despite the veil hindering her from having a clear view of his expression. She could not really tell what he was thinking but every part of her just screamed that she must tread carefully in dealing with the man before her.

"That only makes you a mere puppet of your clan," he sneered.

Emery shut her eyes and took some deep inhales and exhales to keep her temper at bay. She could feel that the king had no intention of keeping their relationship intimate, which was a piece of good news for her but it would also be stressful to deal with him and his sharp tongue. Still, she needed to stretch her patience for as long as she could just for this day.

"As a wedding gift for me, why don't you spill some of the orders you received from your father?" This time, he laid his glass on the table and faced the queen. His striking amber eyes were beautiful but, at the same time, they seemed to mirror danger. Emery thought that people were just spreading rumors of the king’s different eyes, but now that she saw them in person, she came to admit that they were indeed beautiful.

"Tell me and in exchange, I shall lift this veil. You know too well that if I do not remove your veil, you'd be covering your face for who knows how long?" he added.

He was testing her. He wanted to know if she could be of use to him or not. If he could manipulate her, then whatever the plans of the prime minister would be in disarray. And if she does not give in, then he had of no use of someone like her.

"I apologize, Your Majesty, but I have received no orders from the prime minister. In all honesty, we have not spoken something like that to each other ever since I arrived here at the palace," Emery replied whilst faking her shaking voice.

Of course, her words were not believed by the king. Thus, he concluded that the queen had chosen the side of her family. It was no surprise for him though since he already expected that.

When the night befell the city, King Lawson and Emery were inside their shared chamber. The few lanterns and candles were the only source of light inside, making it even harder for Emery to see. The atmosphere was romantic, especially that the two of them were clad in their best robes and if seen from afar, they would look like the perfect couple.

"Your Majesty, let me pour you a drink," Emery offered to break the silence inside the room.

She was about to fill the cup of the king with the liquor but he held her wrist.

"Do nothing at all. You must be exhausted from today's ceremony so it would be much better for you to just go and sleep."

After saying those words, the king stood and left her alone on their first night together, which should be intimate contact between the newly wedded couple. He didn't even bother looking back at his wife before shutting the doors behind him. King Lawson thought that if he treated her harshly, she would come running towards him and beg for his mercy. And if that time comes, he will use her against her clan who did nothing but try to control the court, especially that Prime Minister Korun was hard to pin down. Thus, he saw Emery as a catalyst to remove the prime minister and other members of the Trigon clan from their governmental posts.

With the king leaving the quarters, Emery finally breathed in relief as she took off the veil and changed into something more comfortable. Sipping from her cup, the image of the king looking at her with scornful eyes flashed in her mind. She stood from her seat with her cup still in her hand and walked towards the window where she could see the sky. The clouds cleared up and the full moon was at its peak of beauty.

"Make wrong decisions and I will be the one to dethrone you," she stated. "King Lawson."

Under the moonlight, she enjoyed the company of the liquor. However, her alone time was cut short when her maidservant announced the presence of the prime minister.

Clicking her tongue out of annoyance, Emery grabbed her veil and used it before letting the prime minister enter the room.

"Father, did something urgent happen?" she asked, pretending to be the meek type of daughter.

"It seems that the king did leave you alone even though this night was supposed to be spent with the two of you together," the prime minister said, disappointment evident in his tone of voice.

Dismay was plastered all over his face but Emery couldn't care less about it. With the king being a doting lover towards his royal concubine, he should have predicted that Emery had no place in his heart in the very first place. That was her thought as she looked at her father.

"He didn't even bother removing your veil," he added.

Though his words seemed a tiny bit harmless as of the moment, Emery could tell that there was something more he wanted from her. And in order to extract a bit of information from him, she switched on her acting mode.

She placed her hands on the floor and bowed, "I apologize, father, for not meeting your expectation. But worry not, I shall do everything I can to get His Majesty's attention. As we only met this day, he had not yet seen me wholly."

Understanding her main point, the prime minister made his daughter lift her head from the floor. He agreed with her, especially that their first meeting was just a while back. If given enough time, the king will surely see the worth of his daughter.

"You are an intelligent woman," he complimented, "so I expect that you'd be able to seduce the king. If you cannot make him speak of his future plans, at least bear his child."

Emery simply agreed with the prime minister's words while rolling her eyes to the sides. She was thankful that her face was covered so she could at least make disgusted expressions. Marrying the king was part of their plan, however, bearing his child was never on her list.

The prime minister decided to leave after telling Emery what his intention really was. Upon his exit, she pulled her veil and threw it on the side.

"This mission is such a handful," she mumbled.

Finishing her liquor in one gulp, she gritted her teeth and narrowed her eyes as she stared out of the window. She wanted to continue to complain about the situation to the Arcana but she could not do it all, now that she was far from their headquarters. All she could do was prepare herself for her first day as the queen of Silex Kingdom the very next day.

The next morning, Emery decided to tour the royal palace to familiarize herself with the place. Her maidservants gladly accompanied her even though she insisted to be alone. Wearing her white royal robes trimmed with gold that dropped down to her ankles and traced the slender shape of her hips, she secured her dagger on her thigh before leaving her chambers. It already became a habit for her to keep at least one dagger anywhere she went. "I've heard that the royal garden looks like a paradise. I want to see it in person," she demanded. The head of her maidservants, Lila, took the lead and guided her. Walking past a few halls, they reached the path adorned with flowers. Though they were not yet in full bloom, butterflies flew above them as if they were the prettiest of all. Just when the garden was finally in sight, Lila stopped in her tracks and started to get cold sweat. "Y-Your Highness, I... I think

Emery treaded with as much caution as she could as she hurried to the West Palace. It did not take her much effort to conceal her presence from the eyes of the palace guards which made her think twice about the security of the place. However, that was not her concern at the moment since she had to finish her mission as soon as possible.Meanwhile, the king was on his way to visit the queen at the Inner Palace upon hearing the news that she was locking herself up. He did not want to be involved with her as much as possible but if the ministers would hear about this news, they would start bickering at him for the nth time and it would be annoying. Thus, he was given no choice but to go and see the queen know the reason for her unreasonable tantrums.Lila, who heard that the king was on his way, told the other maidservants to never let the king inside the queen's chambers as per the wish of the queen herself. When Emery and Lila arrived at the Inner Palace and were alone inside the queen's room, Lila knelt on the ground. "Thank you for saving my life," she cried. She thought that she wouldn't be able to see the next sunrise because the king seemed to have seen through her despite her cries. Her hands were still trembling with the shock of her near-death just a few minutes ago. Emery held both of her shoulders and helped her stand on both feet. She wiped off the tears from her cheeks and hugged her in return, a hug that told her she would never perish as long as she was with her. "I'm sorry you have to go through that," she apologized. Lila shook her head and told her that it was her responsibility to help her in her missions. And she knew that being discovered was something she must prepare herself for because it was a situation that she was not fully sure she could avoid for the rest of her life. "We only have each other inside the walls of this palace. We'll guard each other's backs,"

Before dawn, Lila was able to return without catching anyone's attention. She served breakfast to the queen just like she had always been doing and reported that the Arcana would not be able to adhere to Emery’s request because the other members were sent on individual missions. Thus, it was up to her to plan on what to do. Just when Emery thought that she'd be having only one headache to worry about that morning, Prime Minister Korun came to her doorstep and demanded to see her immediately. When he entered the chambers of the queen, he sat across her and looked at her with eyes filled with disappointment. "I know you have heard of the king and his concubine's trip tomorrow," he stated, shaking his head. Anger was very much obvious in his tone despite his voice being calm. And Emery immediately knew what he came for. "Up until now, you are wearing that veil and failed to seduce the king. And now, you still have the luxury to eat when tomorrow, he will be leaving the palace with his

Before the sun would rise in the east, the king, his royal concubine, and the queen departed from the palace to head to the Royal Villa of Hot Springs. They were accompanied by a platoon of soldiers to ensure the royalties' safety and it would take half a day for them to reach the said villa. Inside the carriage that was pulled by four black horses, there was an awkward silence. Emery was sitting across the king and Royal Concubine Hazel, wearing her dark green robes, and just, as usual, her veil covered the entirety of her face. The king had his eyes closed while Royal Concubine Hazel was looking out the window, probably wanting to avoid getting involved with Emery who was staring at the two with an eyebrow raised. "Be not reserved to show affection with each other. I may be the queen but I won't pay much attention to it," Emery spoke to break the silence. Besides, she, too, started to be burdened by the heavy awkwardness. She did not also like to share the same carriage with the

Emery took a long stride and immediately covered the maidservant's mouth with her hand as she pressed her against the wall. With her sharp gaze and a fake tone of voice, she warned her. "Keep this mouth shut or else, I'll cut your tongue and make sure no word will come from you," she threatened. The maidservant nodded a few times as tears filled her eyes. She saw Emery's katana behind her and it made her scared even more. And since she was given no choice but to keep quiet, she could only do such or she’ll definitely suffer. Out of nervousness, the maidservant lost her strength and fell to the ground. Emery kept her eyes on her while stepping back to reach the pot of food. "If you're gonna cry, cover your mouth before I do it myself," she stated. The scared maidservant spared no time and covered her mouth with both hands. She was just given the order to get more food for the king and his concubine and yet this was happening to her. If only she had known, she should not have volunt

With the commotion in the Royal Villa of Hot Springs, King Lawson had his concubine sealed in her chambers as he helped his men seek out the person who shot the arrow. He had already expected the presence of assassins but what he did not expect was that there were two of them that seemed to work under different masters. As this trip was kept a secret and was only known within the palace, he suspected that these two were connected with someone who worked under him. Somehow, he had a strong feeling that the maidservant who served them food that morning was the same person as the assassin involved in the house storage burning incident. He was not really sure about it since only their body stature was similar. Either way, he needed them captured. Meanwhile, Emery was able to escape from her pursuers. Without any hesitation, she made her way back to the villa but on her way, she bumped into someone clad in dark apparel. With the bow in his hand, she knew that he was the culprit who shot

Emery and Lila barely made it to the palace on time. Not knowing that the king and his concubine were also arriving, Emery did not bother changing into her royal robes because she was too tired to go through the ordeal of wearing extravagant dresses as well as arranging her hair longer than before. Lila left her alone in her chambers so she could go back to her work before everyone would suspect her of her absence. However, there was one thing that she had forgotten to tell about Emery when Jadeite was pretending to be her. And that was the fact that Jadeite caused a huge wreck in the Inner Palace, claiming that she was supposed to be with the king. When the sun had already set on the west, the king had arrived at the palace which was a surprise because they were supposed to be staying in the villa for three days. It was already night time but the grandest brothel house here in the Realgar Kingdom was very much alive like it was the peak of the day. Noblemen continued to enter with much anticipation but I cannot truly tell if it was because they were planning to rise against the king or if it was for the women who will soon serve them or probably both. It was a huge party to cover up the noblemen’s real purpose of gathering here in this pleasure house. Thus, it was also a chance for me to test my girls’ ability to gather intelligence without getting caught. Beneath the main brothel, I gathered the 10 ladies I had been training for four years now for their briefing before they would go out there and do their very first mission. “I am reminding you again that all you have to accomplish this night is to gather information regarding the supposed rebellion. Serve the guests with food, wine, sweet talks, lip service, and whatnot but never engage in sexual activities. I forbid you to be in that kind

Emery, then, turned on her heels and started to away. Taking only a few steps, the king finally spoke. “Your accusations against them will be considered treason. To add up to that, you are still the prime suspect in killing the royal concubine. If you turn your back now without proving your innocence, you won’t be able to leave this place alive.” The assassin did not bother listening to whatever he had to say and still continued to leave. With her position as queen taken away from her, she had to pretend to leave the kingdom. She also needed to speak with the Arcana Heads to ask what shall be her next move with all the situations going beyond her control. “Your stubbornness annoys the hell out of me.” King Lawson, whose patience just snapped a few moments ago, grabbed Emery by the arm and dragged her into the tent. He strictly instructed the royal soldiers to make sure that no one would ever dare step inside the tent until he says so. Upon entering, Emery was a bit taken aback when

After the sudden appearance of the queen and Lady Mica, they met with King Lawson inside the tent, and even though he never said a word, his icy gaze said it all. He was not at all pleased with their visit as if this was some kind of vacation trip. “Your Majesty, I apologize for not telling you ahead of time about our arrival. I was simply worried about what was going on in here so I came,” Queen Natalia stated. Clearing her throat, Lady Mica intercepted since she noticed that her son was not convinced of the queen’s reason. “Lawson, that is not the way to treat your new queen. The two of you just got married and did not even spend your honeymoon in peace. At least, appreciate her efforts.” Clicking his tongue, the king shifted his attention back to the reports and said, “Mother, would you step out for a while? I need to speak with Natalia alone.” Lady Mica was about to negate but the queen gave her a reassuring look that everything would be just fine. Thus, the king’s mother left

After a few days of travel along with a few royal soldiers, King Lawson was able to reach the western border. Just like what Vasmir reported, the planes that used to be ablaze were now only covered with the remnants of the war. He could see some of the soldiers cleaning up and gathering the dead bodies but before he could go and see what was going on beyond the borders, he headed to the campsite of the general. Seeing the king wearing his armor, all the royal soldiers got on their knees and lowered their heads. King Lawson simply passed them by and came face to face with General Kyan. Getting off his horse, he entered the tent and the general followed. “I have always regarded you as one of the greatest soldiers that the kingdom could offer. But hearing that you forbid the soldiers to fight alongside the people of the Thorine Kingdom changed my mind. You are nothing but a coward,” the king commented as he took his seat and his chin leaning on the back of his hand. Instead of getting

Emery did not want to force General Kyan into her plan but she had no plans of staying put either. Stepping out of the tent, she walked towards the battlefield but when she felt that the soldiers whom she just led a few hours ago, she stopped in her tracks and faced them. “Our mission is considered as a failure and I apologize for dragging you into a decision I made for myself. But I won’t be apologizing for the decision I made. Our mission has ended, thus, I am no longer your leader so wait for the general’s further instructions.” After saying that, she turned on her heels and scanned the vicinity, hoping to locate where the general of the Damas Kingdom was. It was not hard to spot him despite the wide horizon as her eyes reflected their group backing away with their weapons raised above their heads. The royal soldiers, however, were a bit puzzled at the sudden change of mind of their enemies. And for the ceasefire to be led by the well-known undefeatable general, they found it rat

Emery still did not budge and was on the verge of shooting the arrow right in the face of the general. However, she clicked her tongue when he managed to push away the royal soldiers surrounding him. With a thunderous roar, he claimed, “You will never win this war! The soldiers of the Thorine Kingdom shall back us up and your kingdom shall be eaten by fire!” Emery cocked her head and slowly dropped her weapon. She, then, walked towards the general with a crease on her forehead. “With what you said, am I right if I say that you are associated with the Thorine Kingdom? But how could that be possible now that Princess Natalia just became the queen of our kingdom?” Instead of getting a decent answer from him, Emery twitched as the laughter of the general rang in her ears. It was a burst of laughter to mock her as if she was the craziest woman in front of him. “She married him to kill your king and conquer Silex with our help!” This time, it was the general and the soldiers’ turn to l

When the night embraced the land, Emery briefed the soldiers first on what they should do upon arriving at the site of their ambush. Though, she started to feel a bit uncomfortable as she felt their stares at her as if they were becoming more and more suspicious of who she was. Her heart almost skipped a beat when one of them took the courage to ask about her identity since it seemed like it was their first time to see her. And to avoid that topic, she simply stated that it was not the right time to know her since they were about to do something important that could either give their side an advantage or not. She even almost got busted when a few of them claimed that she looked familiar. If she were to be too defensive, it would make them more suspicious. “Captain, the general of the enemies had arrived in their camp,” the scout came to report, helping Emery get out of the tight situation. She stood from her seat and grabbed her spear. “Everyone, in your positions. At exact midnight

Emery stared at the royal physician who was on his knees right in front of her. She did not know what it was all about but since he dragged her into an empty room, she thought that there was something going on. However, she never dared speak up and ask about it as she still felt a bit discouraged to do anything after witnessing the king getting married to another woman. “Your Highness, please forgive me. I… I know what I did is something unforgivable and I deserve to lose my head for lying but… Your Highness, I beg for your mercy,” he pleaded. He bowed to her until his forehead touched the cold floor. His lips quivered as he anticipated the reply of the queen who still remained quiet after a few minutes of silence. “I am no longer the queen of this kingdom so do not act so formal. But that aside, what lie are you saying?” The royal physician gulped. He could feel the tips of his fingers growing cold but this could only be the last chance he had to redeem himself so he had to speak

Not wanting to be recognized, Emery immediately turned away, swinging her sword towards an enemy. She did not dare look back because she just saw a glint of shock in the general’s eyes despite the few seconds of looking into his very eyes. With a grunt escaping her mouth, she lunged towards another enemy and swung her weapon down to injure his leg. Her enemy fell to his knees, giving Emery the chance to slit his throat and end his life. She kept chanting in her mind not to pay much attention to what she just saw but her anxious heart was unsettled. The thought of her getting arrested at that very moment was not just the best idea. Just then, she felt someone behind her but before she could turn on her heels to see who it was, the general spoke. “What did you come here for?” he asked just loud enough for her to hear. Emery was able to feel a bit relieved when she heard his voice without even a hint of threat. She simply hoped that he would not turn her into the king, at least, not f
