I was sitting outside the pack doctor's office, my hands clasped so tightly in my lap that my knuckles grew white with the pressure. I was in a lonely, plastic chair that sat across from the door. There was a stand beside me, filled with pamphlets and human magazines. The front cover of one with a bright pink background held a woman in a trench coat and her hair pulled back in a bun. Big, blocky, yellow letters were strewn all over the page. I rolled my eyes. Humans were so dramatic.
It was eleven at night, only two hours after the ceremony ended. Alpha Luis had told me it would be better for me to go back to my room and sleep, but I felt like if I left Dawn now, I would be abandoning her. I wanted to stay. Plus, I needed some time to think about my current situation.
"How are you doing?" I looked up at a girl my age looming over me. Although she wasn't as tall as Dawn, she was still a bit taller than me. She had hazel eyes, her pupils rimmed with green and the rest darkening with brown. She had dark brown hair, the same as Alpha Ryder's and Alpha Luis'. She had sun kissed skin like Dawn and a soft, round face. She wore a kind smile that made me feel oddly drawn to her.
"Okay," I said, shifting awkwardly in my seat.
"May I sit?" she asked, gesturing to the seat that was next to me.
"Sure," I said as she stiffly walked over and sat next to me.
"I know this can be scary, but trust me, we have the best pack doctor in all of the packs. She'll come out okay," the girl said, pushing back a loose strand of her dark brown hair. When I didn't answer, she picked on a stray thread of her sweater and spoke again, "Is there something more you would like to talk about?"
Maybe I was more worried about myself than Dawn. I mean, people kept saying she would be fine, maybe I was just worried about my own secret. 'You just have to trust the right people,' Zy's words flashed in my head. I looked back at the girl, willing myself to talk to her. I needed to talk to someone, but I couldn't bring myself to confide in a stranger.
"I've just never been away from her," I lied, smiling to cover up my guilt, "I'm just not used to being without her."
"Tell you what," she said, leaning forward on the heel of her hand, "Tomorrow, before the next activity, you and I can explore the capital cities of werewolves, Fort Redwood!"
As a child, I had always dreamed of walking down the narrow cobblestone paths in Fort Redwood, but now that I had the opportunity, my stomach twisted, knowing I wouldn't be able to do it with Dawn.
"Sounds fun," I said, smiling. She smiled back, holding out her free hand.
"The name's Brandy Gilette, Daughter of Alpha Luis and Luna Celestia. Older sister of Alpha-in-line Ryder," she smirked at my surprised expression and laughed when I nodded as I shook her hand, "No need to be so polite, I'm only a Delta."
"Still," I marveled at her high ranking for such a young female, "That's pretty high for your age and gender!"
"I know, she said, playfully patting her chest, "Trend maker!"
At that moment, the office door swung open, revealing the pack doctor. He was a tall and scrawny man with light grey streaks running through his hair. He had glasses that were perched on the end of his long, skinny nose. I saw tired wrinkles under his eyes, thin lines that would have otherwise been unnoticeable. He had dark blue eyes that glowed with kindness as he looked down at the both of us over his clipboard.
"Doctor Goseg, is she - alright?" Brandy asked cautiously.
"Well," he started, clearing his throat, "It was a bit more complicated than a drunken fit. She actually had a bit of what we call Turning sickness. Her strain shows that she was fighting off her wolf all evening and then it got too much for her to handle," when he saw my utterly terrified face he added quickly, "She will be fine, she just needs to rest for a while. This might mean she wont find a mate but," he shrugged his frail shoulders, "It could be worse."
I nodded, my heart twisting with pity for Dawn. She had her heart set on finding someone to spend her life with and because of some sickness that was out of her control, she would have to wait a whole year to try again.
"Can I see her?" I asked, my voice trembling, "Is she awake?"
Doctor Goseg shook his head, "If she saw you, she might get to excited and that would put her in an unhealthy state."
"O-okay," I said sensibly.
"Now," he smiled fatherly, "You kids get to bed."
Brandy and I nodded, leaving the area outside his office. As we walked out of the room, making our way to the lobby where all the rooms branched off in halls, Bradley turned to me. She didn't say anything, just studied my face with her critical hazel eyes.
"You're pretty," she said after a minute. Frankly, I was quite tired of trying to hide my heated cheeks, so I let her see the color run to my face, my blood boiling to the surface. The thing I found odd was even though my blood was silver, I could still blush normally. I guess I should have been more grateful than skeptical.
"You are too," I said back, honestly. She was. She had the Alpha's beauty in her, the way her olive skin was complemented by her dark hair and glittering eyes. She blushed too, bright pink against her skin.
"No one has ever said that before," she whispered, half to herself. I looked at her incredulously. How had no one ever complimented her obvious beauty. Then I felt guilty. I didn't want to be the first person to ever call her pretty. It should have been someone who truly loved her.
"I'm sorry, someone who was in love with you should have said that for the first time," I said, voicing my thoughts. She smiled at me, the way she had been before.
"I'm the Alpha's daughter, always overshadowed by my brother. I doubt anyone will ever love me," I could hear a hint of bitterness in her voice.
"Everyone who was created by the Moon goddess was put into this world to find someone to love," I said, comforting her. She looked at me, her eyes shiny with un shed tears.
"Thanks, but I really don't think that anyone in this world is right for me," she muttered, her arms stiff at her sides.
"Don't say that," I said and she looked at me, tears streaking down her face, "Everyone has a chance! The reason we have individual scents is so that our mates can better identify us by them. You will find a mate some day, you just have to listen to the Moon goddesses plans."
She inhaled deeply and looked at me, smiling through her tears and red, puffy eyes, "Sorry, I just get emotional sometimes when I think about how I work just as hard as my brother and never get appreciated because I'm a female!"
"I know how you feel," I muttered, "I had an older brother and if I said his name, you would most likely recognize him. He always acted like he was better than me, I grew up living in his shadow. Then, he found a mate in Silversky and killed the Alpha, becoming the Alpha himself."
Brandy looked at me, utterly stunned, "Your brother is Roth Rogers?"
I nodded, "Yeah, I'm his sister, Ruby Rogers."
"I've heard of you," she said, and then continued at my bewildered expression, "He sometimes talks about you at the Alpha meetings."
"What does he say?" I asked, half nervous and half bitter.
"He asks the Alpha Luis about you, how you are. He didn't know who you were, so he would always reply with some dry phrases like, 'doing good,' or, 'she's fine,'" Brandy said, rolling her eyes, "Alpha talk."
"Yeah," I said as the narrow passageways opened into the lobby.
"What rank are you?" she asked, looking around at the halls that were based on ranks.
"Epsilon," I said, shoving my hand into the pocket of my cardigan where the golden key sat, undisturbed. She cooked an eyebrow at me the way her brother had.
"Impressive," she said, smirking.
"That's what your brother said," I giggled at their likeness.
"Damn! He always steals my lines," she said, snapping her fingers. I laughed as we started our way to the halls that branched off toward the west.
"Is Alpha Ryder your only sibling?" I asked her.
"Nah, I have a younger sister. She's nine, nine years younger than me," Brandy smiled at the thought of her sister, "She looks a lot like my mom."
"What's it like having Luna Celestia as your mom," I blurted out of curiosity.
She shook her head and stared at the ground, "She's harsh, but she's my mom."
"What's your sister's name?" I asked, desperate to change the subject.
"Blake. Her name is Blake. Named after William Blake the poet," Brandy smiled at the ground fondly.
"I'd love to meet her someday," I said, "by the way you talk about her, she sounds like the most interesting person to ever live!"
"I have a feeling you will," Brandy smiled at me warmly, "Room number?"
"Oh, One-twenty-three," I said, looking around and realizing we were surrounded by doors.
"Right there," she said, pointing at a door that was down the hall a bit. She probably saw it with her wolf vision. We continued to the door, both looking around kind of awkwardly.
Finally, the door came into view and I smiled at Brandy, "See you later. I'll meet you tomorrow in the lobby at nine?"
"Sure, the next event, a dance, is starting at six so we'll have plenty of time!" she wiggled her finger when she said, 'a dance.'
"I don't have anything to wear," I said, suddenly filled with the anxiety of standing out.
"And that's why we are going shopping!" Brandy squealed. She leaned forward, hugged me quickly and started off down the hall, skipping the whole way. I laughed and turned toward the door, stuffing the key into the small slot. As I pushed the door open, I collapsed on the bed, not even bothering to change.
"Ruby?" I pushed myself up from the ground, dirt falling away from my face. I looked down at my paws that were tucked under my chest, the white of my fur stained brown with the dirt. I looked around, wondering who called my name."Hello?" I called out, recognizing the clearing as the one I had met Zy in, "Zy? Is that you?""No," a figure melted away from the shadows that nipped at the corners of my pool of moonlight, "It's me."I instantly recognized the fur of the wolf, white. It was a female, the small stature telling me so. Her familiar eyes glowed bright blue with sadness. It was Dawn.I raced over to her, burying my head in the crook of her neck, "Are you alright? I miss you so much." my voice was muffled by her fur."Ruby, we need to talk, okay?" I pulled away, fearing the stiffness in her voice."What is it? Is something wrong?" I asked her.She chuckled darkly and looked me in the eye, "I wouldn't be here if there wasn't.""What is it?" I asked, heart pounding in my throat."I
I was in the same clearing I had met Zy and Dawn in, the silver of the moonlight still fighting off the shadows that were putting up an effort to bite at the light. My red fur seemed a shade duller, they said that happened when experiencing grief. One thing was off, though. The white of my paws now glowed silver like the moonlight. I looked around, wondering what guest would bring me bad news this time. This time I refused to call out in fear and I sat up, glaring into the gloom. I sat there for what felt like hours, waiting for someone to suddenly appear as the others had, shifting from darkness into a figure. After a few moments of feeling like I should say something, a dark brown wolf thawed out of the gloom. Its dark blue eyes examined me, a passive look within their depths."Who are you and what bad news do you bring me?" I asked, hearing bitterness in my own voice. A slight amusement passed over the wolf's face before they spoke."How do you know I have bad news?" I could tell
"So you've never been to Fort Redwood?" She asked again. I nodded sadly. I still wanted to be with Dawn my first time, but I guess I should have been appreciative of the fact that I would get to go to the place I dreamed of living at as a child. "No, I lived in Giasind Vale borough my whole life," I said and she widened her eyes when she looked at me."Are the rumors true?" She asked, her voice hushed, "Do you eat rats for dinner?""What?" I asked, barely holding back a massive laugh, "No, who told you that?""Oh," her eyebrows knitted together, "I grew up in Redwood and everyone just always told me to stay away from those Giasind Vale kids because they ate rats for dinner." "What was it like?" I asked, awed, "Growing up in one of the most pristine werewolf city districts?""Everyone was always treating me really nice cause my dad was the Alpha. Everyone expected me to be well behaved so I never really got to do anything fun," she shrugged, "At least I had dinner on the table every
"What do you want to drink?" Brandy asked me, nudging me in my exposed side. She shook me away from my daydreams. I was currently having quite the difficulty deciphering what drinks on the menu were tea - or which were even drinks; Lucky Eight, Chilly Thrill, Holy Night, Red Slapper. Who even named these drinks anyway? They probably had to take some super odd college class to come up with names this weird."I'll get the - uh - Honey Grande. Is that even a tea drink?" I said shakily. After the dress store, Brady took me to ForeverFangs and bought me a whole big bag of clothes. My sweaty fingers were gripped so tightly around the ribbon that was tied to the bag, that my knuckles grew white. I was really nervous about being in public and looking like I just crawled out of bed. All day, Brandy and I received lopsided glares. Of course, they all tried to hide their astonishment when they saw a hobo like me was hanging out with Delta Brandy."Go change if you're so nervous about how you loo
Ryder helped Brandy and I lug our bags into her car and then threw himself in the back seat. Brandy went off to get a bag she left in the café. I slipped into the passenger seat and turned around and smiled at him. He was splayed across the leather seat, his hands tucked under his head and a big yawn escaping his lips. He looked back up at me and smiled, "You still look cute, though.""W-what?" I asked, feeling my face burst into flames."Earlier that I said you looked cuter before you had that whole get-up on, but I still think you look pretty in a skirt," he said, giving me a genuine smile. My heart thudded violently against my rib cage, causing me to be unable to make sentences that made any sense whatsoever."I- you- thank- you uh- my um- well I- thank you for the um," I stuttered. Before I could gather my thoughts, though, Ryder sat up and leaned forward with an odd grace. His eyes bore into mine, freezing me in place and causing a series of incoherent murmurs to escape the gapin
I stared into the mirror, a seemingly different me staring back. I was the same person, same dark green eyes that grew darker as the iris moved out, the same fiery red hair that was darker at the scalp and lightning at the bottom, same dots of freckles crossing the bridge of my nose and dotting my cheek bones, same ghostly pale skin with a brilliant contrast between my cheeks and forehead - but there was something different. I seemed more mature, more sophisticated. It might have been the way my long, pin-straight hair was curled and put up into a classy, but sloppy, bun. Maybe it was the way I had put makeup on and the internal accomplishment of doing it myself made me feel different. Maybe it was the dress I was wearing - the polka-dotted one that hung high around my thighs. Or maybe, it was the experiences swimming in the depths of my eyes. It was odd how only two days had passed and I felt like a whole new person.A sudden knock on the door alerted me, making me spin around and ru
When we got to the line, we stood behind a familiar blonde head I had sworn I'd seen before. When I peered closer, I reeled back in surprise when I recognized the girl I had seen who had the mark. She was dressed in a black lace dress that covered her shoulder where I'd seen the mark earlier. Her hair was up and falling over her shoulders. I wondered if even the slightest pressure applied to it hurt. Standing beside her protectively was the boy who I assume marked her. Their scents were mingled so I supposed it wasn't as surprising as I'd first thought."What?" Brandy asked me, shaking away from my daydream. "What what?" I asked, trying to look as if nothing had happened."You just looked like you saw something horrifying. Did anything happen?" Brandy asked, slightly amused."No, I um- well kind of," I sighed at my odd idiocy to ramble when I was nervous, "I- uh- yeah, no. It was nothing.""Don't lie, pretty girl," Quil said, giving me a mischievous smirk."Thanks for that," I said a
My hands were clasped tightly in my lap, helping me prevent them from shaking furiously as my anxiety prickled each and every one of my nerves. My eyes flicked around at every movement around me. Ryder was beside me, occasionally giving me a reassuring pat on the back. I usually gave him a weak smile, but this time, I barely noticed based on the intense pounding in my chest."Ruby! Hello? Earth to Ruby!" I jerked back to the present day and came face-to-face with Brandy. She waved her hands in my face and smiled through her fingers."What is it?" I asked, voice solemn."Cheer up, chap," Brandy said, clapping my shoulder and talking in a terrible British accent.I couldn't help a small smile that tickled the corners of my mouth, "Shut up, weirdo.""Rude!" Brandy gasped, flinging herself into the seat next to me and giving Ryder a worried look. She opened her mouth and then thought better of it, sealing her lips shut, "what're you so scared about?""Scared?" I asked incredulously, "I'm
It actually took Brandy more like ten minutes to get ready, but when she came out of the bathroom, finally finished, she glowed like the Moon Goddess herself - more than usual. Her hair was in a curly bun, strands falling loose and spilling onto her forehead and by her temples. Her makeup was stunning and bold, bringing out her hazel, chocolaty eyes. I honestly didn't mind her estimate was off because she looked absolutely gorgeous in the time given. "You look stunning," I awed as we walked out of my dorm. "Thanks!" Brandy smiled, pushing back a wavy curl, tucking it behind her ear, "I know it won't matter in what - Less than an hour? - but if this is my last chance at looking good, then I wanna rock it!""And you're wearing short enough shorts to be hidden by that dress," I joked. "These are what I call my bar shorts. I wear them when I'm trying to get-" I cut her off before she could finish. "Woah! Woah! Woah!" I stopped her before she could finish, "Let's just get to the cleari
I turned to Lindsay irritably, giving her a sour glare, "Go ahead.""Alright," that was the only time I'd ever heard Lindsay even resemble being hesitant, "Well I'm having trouble.. accepting death.""Why do you have to?" I asked incredulously, surprised by her statement."If I have no hope left, I fight better. The thought of losing everything, not being there makes it easier for me to fight like hell, give it my all like it'll be my last fight," Lindsay shook her head in an almost pitiful despair, "but now, I just can't. I feel like I do have things to lose.""It might help you - we all have our methods of keeping cool in the heat of battle - but not being ready to die isn't necessarily a bad thing," I challenged, "Nobody's ready to die. In fact, you shouldn't be. The will to live should drive you, not the lack thereof.""What should I do now?" Lindsay muttered stubbornly, "How will I be able to control my anxiety without the complete lack of care for my life?""Do you hear yoursel
The first to reach me and bombard me with questions was Clayton, her face a mask of anxiety, while Matt looked mellow and slightly irritated as per usual. She chewed nervously on the corner of her plush pink lip before approaching me, her eyes darting back and forth restlessly, "H-hey, Ruby. Can we talk? Matt and I have some things we're worried about and I could really use someone other than Matt to console me."I opened my mouth to answer her, a gentle expression spreading across my features, but just as words began to form in my mouth, Iona interrupted me, suddenly having been the second one to reach me, "Ruby, I need some help with something. I have this internal conflict type thing going on, and I could really use your superior knowledge of how to control emotions."Looking at her a light bit impatient, I began to hold up a hand to tell her to wait, but was interrupted yet again by a harsher voice this time. It was Lindsay, "Hey, we need to talk. I need to clarify some things qui
Axel's POV:"Oh yeah," I nodded in acknowledgement, not bothering to glance down at my hand, "I must have pricked my hand on some branches. I'm fine, so-""No! Look!' Broddi said urgently, giving my wrist a slight tug, "Look at your blood! It's silver!""What?" I asked, dazed, my heart beat picking up immensely. I lowered my eyes, everything around me moving in slow motion, down to the faintly stinging, shallow marks in my palm. Sure enough, my inner forearm was spattered with scarlet intertwined with a sparkling silver, "W-What does this mean?""I think it means," Broddi gulped, looking from my wrist into my eyes, his eyes reflecting the same emotion I felt; horror, "you have Lunar Blood.""I-I can't!" I stammered, "I've bled before, and I've never seen it silver! This has to be some sort of mistake! It must have been something I ate!""You're shaking," Broddi observed, worriedly, "Let's find the end of this path and settle down. I really don't want you passing out on me just yet."I
The alarm that I set the night prior before I drifted to sleep, blared achingly loud now in the morning when I really didn't want to wake up. I rolled over, and like an annoyed teen before school, I slammed my fist on the snooze button, nearly smashing the machine to bits. Milo laid beside me, and didn't budge as I sat up, grunting irritably while doing so. It was a few minutes before I had the energy to stand up, and when I did, I nearly collapsed back down. The whole lower part of my body was aching unbearably, and the tingling was steadily creeping upward, corrupting my lower stomach. The events of last night rushed back to my memory like a flood, and I groaned, the anxiety already stored within my chest mounting twice as fast.Ignoring the awful pain in my legs, and tense muscles in my thighs, I scrambled to my suitcase, pulled out one of my more dainty outfits, and scurried into my bathroom, uncomfortable changing around Milo again, who still slept peacefully on one of my golden
I sighed, and plopped down on the edge of the rock, swinging my legs over the ledge, and resting my head in my hands. After what felt like years of everyone in the clearing arguing over whether the plan was sufficient and had no flaws, practically making it fool-proof, everyone, more or less, came to an agreement, and we were all able to go home to get some rest for the big day. My legs were cramped, my throat was scratchy, I'd developed a migraine, and I was mildly irritated, but the plan was finally finished, so a satisfied feeling spread over me, soothing everything wrong. "What's wrong?" Grey asked, sitting down beside me, grunting while doing so. "Nothing," I yawned, rubbing my eyes, "I'm just tired.""Probably, considering you're used to sleeping three times a day," Grey teased, referring to yesterday when we spent the day together and I fell asleep multiple times. "Call me what you want," I smiled back, "I'm not ashamed to be one who can fall asleep easily. You'll be wishin
"R-Raven?" I stuttered, my voice a mixture of shock, terror, and dread. I hadn't seen him since the day of the dodgeball tournament - which felt like years ago, but was only three days in reality. "You know him, Ruby?" Grey asked, oblivious to the tension in the air, "Raven is one of my best soldiers. I didn't know you two knew each other."I regained my confidence, and narrowed my eyes into slits, "Oh, I know him alright. It doesn't surprise me that he's in your pack.""What is that supposed to mean?" Grey asked, looking back at the rest of the group for support."Nothing, really," I sneered, coming off a lot more vicious than I intended, and feeling slightly bad after Grey flinched. "Ruby, are you okay? Did I say something wrong?" Grey asked cautiously."You didn't," I growled, drawing my lips back at Raven, who instantly recoiled, his eyes sparking with the flames of fear and discomfort. Good, I wanted him to feel as uncomfortable as possible. Suddenly sensing the obvious host
As soon as Iona and I finished speaking, her agreeing to even give her life to the plan if needed, I called attention to everyone wandering around the lobby. Much to my surprise, everyone's attention instantly shifted from whatever they were doing, to me, causing me to shift uncomfortably under everyone's gazes. "It's about time to go, so we should probably get on the road," I said awkwardly, avoiding everyone's eye contact and staring at my feet that shuffled nervously. No one had any interjections or trouble with what I had to say, so they all quickly gathered into a line behind me, following as I pushed open the door into the night, or rather midday, but night sounded cooler. Just as we stepped outside, and I began to lead everyone across the parking lot full of snazzy cars, all kaleidoscope of colors, I realized just how lucky we all were to not have been caught by a higher authority. I mean, a group of mediocre ranked teens, standing around, looking suspicious - how could it h
'How's it going, kiddo?' A familiar voice echoed through my head, startling me to the point that I would've screamed if it wasn't for the tight clasp my teeth had on my lower lip.'Conall? Holy cow! I haven't heard from you in awhile. I was actually starting to get kind of worried,' I thought back, impatiently waiting for a response.'The reason you haven't heard from me is because you're doing well on your own so far. I've just come to say hi and give you a bit of advice real quick,' Conall replied.I felt a slight bit of pride at Conall's words, but asked; 'So what is it then? What advice do I need?''I guess you could say I just wanted to tell you not to hold a grudge. I'm afraid I can't be any more specific, but just remember that when encountering people later today,' Conall's words were oddly ominous, sending a shiver down my spine.'Alright,' I responded, making sure I mentally sounded skeptical, although I'm sure Conall could already tell I was a bit suspicious.'Good. Well, I
