Axel and I chatted for what seemed like hours until he warned me that the games would be starting soon, so we should make our way to the field the game was going to be played on. We cleaned up our trays and made our way down the deserted halls, a few stragglers hurrying toward the lobby. Axel and I hurried down the hallway, giggling at how late we were, ignoring the venomous glares I received from the few remaining people. I knew it'd be fine if I snuck in late, but people would surely notice if one of the Deltas was missing.

When the lobby doors opened in front of us, a wave of cool air washed over my heated skin. Axel and I raced across the parking lot to the back of the mansion, the field coming into view, people milling around lazily, waiting for the competition to start. Axel gave me a quick goodbye and raced over to where the other Deltas and Beta Broddi were chatting. I looked back at the ground and began my lonely trek to the field, glares and vicious jeers awaiting me.

Everyone in the group cheered, even Bryce, as we all exchanged fist bumps and happy jeers of positivity and eagerness. We actually found the name just in time, because as soon as we calmed down, the Luna was back on the stage, instantly silencing everyone in the crowd, all of us slowly falling silent one by one. Finally, after a signature menacing glare, Luna Celestia cleared her throat, and spoke up. "Alright, all teams, go over there," she thrust a finger in the direction of the end of the field where I could see Mrs. Lockstern and the Alpha waiting with clipboards and pens, "and get you and your team members written down, the team name alongside it too."At once, people were thrown into action, skittering around one another to get to the clipboards with their team. We had a smaller group of young wolves to mate this year, one hundred twenty to one hundred thirty, so there'd be twelve or thirteen teams. Around me, our whole team began to run in the direction everyone else was, hopin

We'd all walked- more like sprinting- to field two and quickly meet Team Three, only saying a quick, 'good luck,' to the other team. Settling into our positions, the throwers on the front line and the dodgers nestled safely in the back ranks, Luna Celestia stomped over after starting the game between Teams One and Two. She raised a stiff hand, almost soldier-like, and brought it down, signaling the beginning of the game.Instantly, the throwers on each team charged to the dividing line where the rubber, red dodge balls lay motionless for the moment. I saw the bulkiest person on the other team, a woman with dark hair that was tied back in braids, grab a ball with absurdly large hands, and chuck it at the first person she saw; Bryce.Bryce dodged it, but only by a slim fraction and snarled at the woman, his lips pulling back to reveal his pointed teeth. He had a ball in his hands, so instead of surrendering and retreating further away from the line where it was safe, he pulled his arm b

I awoke with a slight start, pressing the backs of my hands to my eyes. My surroundings felt unfamiliar, and my wolf felt uneasy even though I still knew I was at the pack house. Almost instantly, a pair of warm, slim arms wrapped around my torso, pulling me sideways on the bed I was sitting atop. I looked over and Brandy's head was resting on my shoulder, her hair tickling my nose and causing me to sneeze."We were so worried about you," Brandy giggled, sitting back in the plastic chair that was beside the bed"Who's we?" I asked, putting finger quotations around the word, 'we.'"Ryder and I," Brandy paused for a second, chewing on her lip as if she was debating telling me something. Finally she spoke again, "And Raven and Grey.""Is that it," I rolled my eyes, though internally, my heart beat quicker at the thought of Raven or Grey being anywhere near me when I was unconscious."I know you think people don't like you, but-,""Don't like me? People hate me! They pelted me with dodgeb

Doctor Moore fitted me with a cast, not bothering to ask me what color I wanted and giving me a dull black one– I would have enjoyed a happy blue or lightening pink). It was tight on my arm, but the pressure helped the pain subside slightly. She shooed us out, seemingly eager to have us leave, and Ryder helped me back to my room, giving everyone who passed us in the halls a vial glare. I almost giggled at how protective he was for only knowing me for three days, but I knew he'd take my teasing seriously."How bad does it hurt on a scale of one to ten?" Ryder asked, turning to me."Seven," I admitted, "But it was an eleven before.""Well that's good," Ryder nodded, growling slightly as a pair of girls giggled and pointed at me, "I won't go on the run tomorrow, so I can hang out with you.""No - no," I said, shaking my head and gaining a sharp pain in the side of my head from the action, "You said it was the most liked event and I don't want you to miss it.""I want you to have company

I opened my eyes, once again being comforted by the warm feeling of the sun on my back - the way it had felt when I visited the Moon Goddess, "Ruby! Get off your lazy ass!"I looked around, wondering who had called me, since I didn't recognize the voice, "Who's there?"Suddenly, a figure materialized out of thin air, a sassy smirk on its face and its arms folded over its chest. It was a she-wolf, or at least that's what she looked like. She had red hair that wrapped around her head in an intricate braid and hung at her waist. Her eyes were grey - the color my eyes changed to when I was a wolf - that were taking me in, looking me up and down. She was about as tall as me, something pretty rare, but with the heels she had on, she had to be a good two to three inches taller. After neither of us spoke, she gave me a sly grin and asked, "Are you going to ask who I am? Rude, if I might add.""S-sorry," I said, mesmerized by her voice. Earlier it sounded odd and unfamiliar, but now it sounde

Conall and I talked for a while, trying to get used to the echo-y aspect of it all. After a while, she told me to get ready and that she'd talk to me later. I wondered what she meant, but I didn't ask her, because she probably already knew - she did live inside of me.I finished getting ready, wincing almost every two minutes because of my sore wrist, and walked out of the bathroom. I pulled my hair back into a sloppy bun, but my loose, wispy, baby-hair bangs were falling into my face and spilling onto my forehead.Grabbing my phone, I clicked it on and saw the time was an hour later. The time the run started was at nine-o-clock, so I had all day until I had to meet Ryder for the run.I flopped back onto my bed, wondering what I was going to do all day, when the phone that hung on the wall in the corner of my room rang. I sat bolt upright and stared at it, waiting for it to ring a second time before jumping up and racing across the room to the phone, answering a bit too eagerly, "Hell

I collapsed onto my bed, rolling to the side, and wishing I could melt into the mattress. The time blinked into view on the clock, reading, '2:00.' It was hard to believe that only two hours ago Brandy was safe. I didn't have stitches, and I'd never seen Grey cry before. My whole body ached and I still had all day before the race, so I decided that I'd take a nap.But each time I closed my eyes, I couldn't feel more awake. I tossed and turned, but not one bit of my previous drowsiness coursed through my body. I stuffed myself under the plush blankets, hoping they'd swallow me up into sleep, but of course that didn't work. So finally, I sat up, frustrated, and pushed myself to my feet.Grabbing my keys and throwing on a sweatshirt, I stomped out of my room, not actually sure of where I was going. For the third time that day, I marched down the maze-like passageways, ignoring the insolent jeers and quips from the passing wolves. I forced my face into a mask of expressionlessness, carefu

  • Stealing Alpha's Heart   Chapter 25: Hatred

When I got back to the Pack House, the parking lot was crowded with people, and I looked around, confused because the run wasn't starting for another four hours. As I pushed my way to the front of the crowd, obviously receiving nasty jeers and looks, I felt an increase in my heart rate at the reactions of the bystanders. There were gasps of shock and horror and some horrified rambles coming from the mouths of hysterical werewolves. What I saw before me was utterly terrifying and the most awful scene I've ever witnessed.Laying in the middle of the parking lot, in the middle of a pool of blood, was the black-haired paramedic, his neck twisted at an awkward and unnatural angle. Just below his collar bone was a giant tear in his chest, some dark blood still pooling from the wound. His eyes were still open along with his mouth, his face forever frozen in a state of horror.I stumbled backward, knocking into people, my good hand flying to my chest in shock and fright. I turned, trying to f

It actually took Brandy more like ten minutes to get ready, but when she came out of the bathroom, finally finished, she glowed like the Moon Goddess herself - more than usual. Her hair was in a curly bun, strands falling loose and spilling onto her forehead and by her temples. Her makeup was stunning and bold, bringing out her hazel, chocolaty eyes. I honestly didn't mind her estimate was off because she looked absolutely gorgeous in the time given. "You look stunning," I awed as we walked out of my dorm. "Thanks!" Brandy smiled, pushing back a wavy curl, tucking it behind her ear, "I know it won't matter in what - Less than an hour? - but if this is my last chance at looking good, then I wanna rock it!""And you're wearing short enough shorts to be hidden by that dress," I joked. "These are what I call my bar shorts. I wear them when I'm trying to get-" I cut her off before she could finish. "Woah! Woah! Woah!" I stopped her before she could finish, "Let's just get to the cleari

I turned to Lindsay irritably, giving her a sour glare, "Go ahead.""Alright," that was the only time I'd ever heard Lindsay even resemble being hesitant, "Well I'm having trouble.. accepting death.""Why do you have to?" I asked incredulously, surprised by her statement."If I have no hope left, I fight better. The thought of losing everything, not being there makes it easier for me to fight like hell, give it my all like it'll be my last fight," Lindsay shook her head in an almost pitiful despair, "but now, I just can't. I feel like I do have things to lose.""It might help you - we all have our methods of keeping cool in the heat of battle - but not being ready to die isn't necessarily a bad thing," I challenged, "Nobody's ready to die. In fact, you shouldn't be. The will to live should drive you, not the lack thereof.""What should I do now?" Lindsay muttered stubbornly, "How will I be able to control my anxiety without the complete lack of care for my life?""Do you hear yoursel

The first to reach me and bombard me with questions was Clayton, her face a mask of anxiety, while Matt looked mellow and slightly irritated as per usual. She chewed nervously on the corner of her plush pink lip before approaching me, her eyes darting back and forth restlessly, "H-hey, Ruby. Can we talk? Matt and I have some things we're worried about and I could really use someone other than Matt to console me."I opened my mouth to answer her, a gentle expression spreading across my features, but just as words began to form in my mouth, Iona interrupted me, suddenly having been the second one to reach me, "Ruby, I need some help with something. I have this internal conflict type thing going on, and I could really use your superior knowledge of how to control emotions."Looking at her a light bit impatient, I began to hold up a hand to tell her to wait, but was interrupted yet again by a harsher voice this time. It was Lindsay, "Hey, we need to talk. I need to clarify some things qui

Axel's POV:"Oh yeah," I nodded in acknowledgement, not bothering to glance down at my hand, "I must have pricked my hand on some branches. I'm fine, so-""No! Look!' Broddi said urgently, giving my wrist a slight tug, "Look at your blood! It's silver!""What?" I asked, dazed, my heart beat picking up immensely. I lowered my eyes, everything around me moving in slow motion, down to the faintly stinging, shallow marks in my palm. Sure enough, my inner forearm was spattered with scarlet intertwined with a sparkling silver, "W-What does this mean?""I think it means," Broddi gulped, looking from my wrist into my eyes, his eyes reflecting the same emotion I felt; horror, "you have Lunar Blood.""I-I can't!" I stammered, "I've bled before, and I've never seen it silver! This has to be some sort of mistake! It must have been something I ate!""You're shaking," Broddi observed, worriedly, "Let's find the end of this path and settle down. I really don't want you passing out on me just yet."I

The alarm that I set the night prior before I drifted to sleep, blared achingly loud now in the morning when I really didn't want to wake up. I rolled over, and like an annoyed teen before school, I slammed my fist on the snooze button, nearly smashing the machine to bits. Milo laid beside me, and didn't budge as I sat up, grunting irritably while doing so. It was a few minutes before I had the energy to stand up, and when I did, I nearly collapsed back down. The whole lower part of my body was aching unbearably, and the tingling was steadily creeping upward, corrupting my lower stomach. The events of last night rushed back to my memory like a flood, and I groaned, the anxiety already stored within my chest mounting twice as fast.Ignoring the awful pain in my legs, and tense muscles in my thighs, I scrambled to my suitcase, pulled out one of my more dainty outfits, and scurried into my bathroom, uncomfortable changing around Milo again, who still slept peacefully on one of my golden

I sighed, and plopped down on the edge of the rock, swinging my legs over the ledge, and resting my head in my hands. After what felt like years of everyone in the clearing arguing over whether the plan was sufficient and had no flaws, practically making it fool-proof, everyone, more or less, came to an agreement, and we were all able to go home to get some rest for the big day. My legs were cramped, my throat was scratchy, I'd developed a migraine, and I was mildly irritated, but the plan was finally finished, so a satisfied feeling spread over me, soothing everything wrong. "What's wrong?" Grey asked, sitting down beside me, grunting while doing so. "Nothing," I yawned, rubbing my eyes, "I'm just tired.""Probably, considering you're used to sleeping three times a day," Grey teased, referring to yesterday when we spent the day together and I fell asleep multiple times. "Call me what you want," I smiled back, "I'm not ashamed to be one who can fall asleep easily. You'll be wishin

"R-Raven?" I stuttered, my voice a mixture of shock, terror, and dread. I hadn't seen him since the day of the dodgeball tournament - which felt like years ago, but was only three days in reality. "You know him, Ruby?" Grey asked, oblivious to the tension in the air, "Raven is one of my best soldiers. I didn't know you two knew each other."I regained my confidence, and narrowed my eyes into slits, "Oh, I know him alright. It doesn't surprise me that he's in your pack.""What is that supposed to mean?" Grey asked, looking back at the rest of the group for support."Nothing, really," I sneered, coming off a lot more vicious than I intended, and feeling slightly bad after Grey flinched. "Ruby, are you okay? Did I say something wrong?" Grey asked cautiously."You didn't," I growled, drawing my lips back at Raven, who instantly recoiled, his eyes sparking with the flames of fear and discomfort. Good, I wanted him to feel as uncomfortable as possible. Suddenly sensing the obvious host

As soon as Iona and I finished speaking, her agreeing to even give her life to the plan if needed, I called attention to everyone wandering around the lobby. Much to my surprise, everyone's attention instantly shifted from whatever they were doing, to me, causing me to shift uncomfortably under everyone's gazes. "It's about time to go, so we should probably get on the road," I said awkwardly, avoiding everyone's eye contact and staring at my feet that shuffled nervously. No one had any interjections or trouble with what I had to say, so they all quickly gathered into a line behind me, following as I pushed open the door into the night, or rather midday, but night sounded cooler. Just as we stepped outside, and I began to lead everyone across the parking lot full of snazzy cars, all kaleidoscope of colors, I realized just how lucky we all were to not have been caught by a higher authority. I mean, a group of mediocre ranked teens, standing around, looking suspicious - how could it h

'How's it going, kiddo?' A familiar voice echoed through my head, startling me to the point that I would've screamed if it wasn't for the tight clasp my teeth had on my lower lip.'Conall? Holy cow! I haven't heard from you in awhile. I was actually starting to get kind of worried,' I thought back, impatiently waiting for a response.'The reason you haven't heard from me is because you're doing well on your own so far. I've just come to say hi and give you a bit of advice real quick,' Conall replied.I felt a slight bit of pride at Conall's words, but asked; 'So what is it then? What advice do I need?''I guess you could say I just wanted to tell you not to hold a grudge. I'm afraid I can't be any more specific, but just remember that when encountering people later today,' Conall's words were oddly ominous, sending a shiver down my spine.'Alright,' I responded, making sure I mentally sounded skeptical, although I'm sure Conall could already tell I was a bit suspicious.'Good.
