Chapter 4: Xander

I’m so pissed off at Rich. I can’t believe he won’t just reject Emlyn. What is he trying to do? Keep his mate and a mistress on the side?

And now, Emlyn drops the bomb that she’s pregnant. I thought for sure she was going to kill Gwen when she called her child a bastard.

I know Emlyn wouldn't want me to, but Emerson and I are close friends. If the roles were reversed, I'd want him to tell me.

So, I call him and tell him that his sister is pregnant with my brother's child.

"This is a fucking mess, Xander."

"I know, Em. It's why I'm calling you. I don't know how much longer Emlyn can stay here."

"She'll always have a place in my pack." He says, as I knew he would.

Now, all of us can smell Rich and Emlyn’s baby. Well, everyone except Rich. He seems to be the only one that is oblivious to it, his own child.

I know something underhanded is going on, I just have no idea what it is and it’s making me crazy. I’m a problem solver, it’s what I do. I have to be good at it if I want to be an effective CEO. And, I learned from the best, my father. The man is incredible at coming up with solutions to problems. He makes it look so effortless. I’d go talk to him if he were here. But, unlike most Alphas, he couldn’t wait to pass over the Alpha title to Rich, so now, he’s rarely here. He’s usually off somewhere, handing the world to my mother on a silver platter and dragging my youngest sisters with them.

And now, things are escalating in the pack. Gwen and Emlyn almost can’t be in the same room together without an argument starting and Gwen is awful. She is mean and cruel to the pack members, something Rich would never have allowed in his pack before. He seems to always be taking Gwen’s side which means he’s now in direct opposition to Emlyn as well.

I love my brother, but he’s wrong in this. I never thought I’d think this, especially in this family where my mother made sure that we all knew how important family is to one another, but if he doesn’t get his shit together, I may have to challenge him to be Alpha of this pack. I never wanted the position, I’ve always wanted to run the business, to be able to get away from the pack politics when I wanted to. But now, without my father here, I’m next in line to challenge him.

My mind is made up two weeks later when I find Emlyn lying on the floor of her bathroom. I knew something was wrong when she wasn’t downstairs for breakfast. I immediately mind link Cayd to come help me, worried that the stress of everything has gotten to her and maybe the baby as well.

When I go to put her in the shower, I think she’s being modest, not wanting me to see her naked. I don’t listen, nudity is common in the packs, but as soon as I pull her top off, I understand why she didn’t want me to see her and it has nothing to do with modesty.

Her body is covered in bruises. She’s so black and blue that it looks like she’s been hit by a car. I snarl knowing exactly who has done this to her and that she’s been hiding it from me. Cayd’s snarl comes almost immediately behind mine when he sees her and I know she’s been hiding this from everyone.

“What the fuck, Emlyn?” I growl at her. She should not have kept this from me. I can’t help her, I can’t protect her, if I don’t know what’s going on.

Cayd doesn’t understand, so he’s shocked and understandably infuriated when she tells him that the bruises are because Rich has been cheating on their mate bond.

“How often?” I ask her through gritted teeth.

She doesn’t want to answer me. She’s obviously still trying to protect Rich, but I’m not having it, not anymore.

When she tells me it’s been every night, she begins to sob. She looks at me and something passes between us. She knows she has to reject him now. If she doesn’t it could kill her, or maybe even her child.

Cayd goes to get Leana while I help Emlyn get dressed.

“You should have told me.” I say to her quietly.

“He’s your brother, Xander.”

“And you’re my friend. I don’t care that he’s my brother, no one treats you like this. He should be ashamed of himself.”

“Well, it won’t matter after today. I’ll reject him and then he can reject me and I’ll go on with my life.”

She looks at me. “I have to leave.”

“Of course you do. I would never expect you to stay here. Shit, I want to leave. I almost can’t stand being here any longer.”

“Will you do me a favor, Xander?” She asks me as I put her shoes on her feet.

“Anything, you know you only have to ask.”

“Find out what’s going on. Something definitely is. It isn’t like Rich to allow his pack mates to be abused. And Gwen is abusive. The sprites told me that it happens all the time and that Rich knows about it.” She looks at me sadly.

“Something is going on, and it has to do with Gwen. I don’t know what it is, and I can’t stay to help you figure it out. I have to protect my son.” She says.

“I know. And you know that Cayd will want to go with you, right?” I say, standing up and smiling at her.

She gives me a soft smile. “I hope he does. It would be good to have a friend with me.”

“Let’s do this and I promise you, if it’s the last thing I do, I’ll figure out what is going on.”

“Thanks Xander.” She says, as Leana and Cayd come back into the room.

The three of us surround Emlyn as she rejects my brother. I watch, dispassionately, as he drops to the floor, in obvious pain, but my concern is for Emlyn. She didn’t deserve any of this and it’s about time he got a taste of the pain he’s been giving her.

How’s that for a non-existent mate bond, brother?

I watch as Gwen immediately drops beside him, telling him to accept Emlyn’s rejection. She knows something, something the rest of us do not. That thought is reinforced when even Rich yells at her that he can't reject a bond that isn't there. I don't know what's going on yet, but I have every intention of finding out what it is.

Cayd picks Emlyn up and carries her to a car, taking her back to Safe Haven. She not only rejected Rich as her mate, but also her Alpha. She needs to get home and have Emerson reinstate her in their pack so she doesn’t feel and smell like a rogue.

Rich passes out on the floor and Gwen begins patting his face, trying to wake him.

“Step aside.” I snarl at her. I don’t trust her for an instant.

I reach down, picking up my brother and carrying him to his room. “I’ll stay with him.” Gwen says.

I turn and look at her. “Get. Out.” It’s a snarl, an Alpha command, and she yips before complying.

Maybe I’m used to be around Guardians, all of my sisters are Guardians, my mother is a Guardian, and our neighboring packs have Guardians that I’ve grown up with. So seeing a female so impacted by my Alpha aura, one who is supposed to be a Luna, just confirms to me, yet again, that something is definitely wrong.

I put Rich on the couch, wanting to change his sheets that reek of sex. Once it’s done, I carry him to the bed, removing his shoes and pulling up a chair to wait for him to wake up.

It’s hours later when he finally opens his eyes. His first question is about Emlyn, as it should be. As it always should have been.

I tell him that she’s gone home to her family. He tells me that Finley, his wolf, identified Emlyn and her wolf Morrigan as their mates, but he’s also saying that Gwen is his mate.

“I don’t know what’s going on, Xander.”

I stand. Now that he’s awake, I need to start putting timelines and pieces of this puzzle together. It’s time to figure out what Gwen has been up to.

“Neither do I, Rich, but you better figure it out.”

I nearly walk out of the room without telling him. She asked me, practically begged me not to say anything, but he needs to know.

“She didn’t want us to tell you, but she could feel it. Every time you’ve been with Gwen, Emlyn could feel it. This morning, I found her unconscious on her bathroom floor. She’s covered in bruises, Rich. Bruises you gave her by cheating on the mate bond you say you can’t feel.”

He sits up and looks at me, shock evident on his face.

“You could have killed her and your son. So, whatever you do, if you care about her and your son at all, stay the fuck away from Gwen and stay the fuck away from Emlyn until you get this figured out.”

I walk out, closing the door behind me. I will figure out what is going on, and when I find out who did this to Emlyn, to my brother, they will pay with their life.

The minute my father returned to the pack, I went to see him. Something needs to be done. Ever since Emlyn left, pack members have started leaving the pack, too. No one has confidence in my brother’s leadership any longer. I walk into my parents’ house, the one my father built specifically for my mother. I’ve seen mate bonds my entire life, seen the way mates love and adore each other, but I’ve never seen anything like the love that my parents have for each other. They came together during a time when they had both lost hope, and together they built the incredible life that they have now. “Hey mom, where’s dad, I need to speak to him.” “Bonjour, Xander. Paris was amazing, thanks for asking.” Quinn says to me. “Oh, I’m so glad you asked Xander. My personal favorite was Ireland. Those accents. Mwah.” My sister Malin kisses her fingers and then spreads them wide, in a modified version of a chef’s kiss, continuing Quinn’s chide about me ignoring them. My twin sisters, although they ar

Over the next few weeks, I wait for it to happen, wait for the Guardians to come for me. Every time the bell above the door to the shop rings letting me know someone is here, my heart stops and my stomach clenches in fear. Yet, nothing happens. Nothing. I don’t even see Beta Trevor anymore. Now that Gwen is at another pack, things must have settled down. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll leave me alone now. I begin to relax. Hopefully, things are finally going right. Today, the bell chimes and I walk out to see someone I hadn’t expected to see. She was a girl in my old coven. Her parents were high up in the chain of command of the coven. “Azure, hi. How are you?” “Hey, Maeve. I’m okay. Well, not really. Listen, I’ve left the coven.” “What? Why? What happened?” I ask her, taking her hand and pulling her to the back of the store. I pour some tea, the tea I’ve been making to help calm my nerves and I give her some. She looks like she needs it as much as I do. She takes a sip of tea, then l

It took me a week to find the witch. I had returned to the pack when Rich invited Gwen’s father, Beta Trevor and their Alpha, Alpha Carter in for interrogation. They didn’t know it was going to be an interrogation, but they found out the minute they walked in. Beta Trevor and his Alpha both indicated that they had nothing to do with Gwen’s scheming and Leana confirmed that they were telling the truth. When he asked if he could see his daughter, I escorted Beta Trevor to our cells. It was interesting to see the interaction. It was almost as if Gwen expected that her father could get her out of the mess she had made. He told her she’d gone too far this time and there was nothing he could do. It makes me wonder what other messes she’s gotten into that he’s had to get her out of. It’s only a few days after their meeting that I find her, the witch. She’s nothing like what I expect to find when I finally lay eyes on her. She doesn’t look like a witch at all. She looks like a college stude

I watch Alpha Richard Holstin walk out the door of his office. “Xander, a word?” The beautiful woman, Leana, says to Alexander. I’m guessing that Xander is his nickname, or maybe some sort of family name. “Stay here, I’ll be right back.” He says to me. I nod, where else am I going to go? I’m in the middle of a packhouse in the middle of pack lands owned by werewolf shifters that have enhanced senses. I wouldn’t make it out of this house, much less off their lands before I’d be torn to shreds. Alexander comes back into the room. “What do you need?” He asks me. “I have everything I need back in my shop. It would be a lot easier if we could go there.” He looks at me a long moment. I sigh. “Where do you think I’ll go? What am I going to do?” “Scream for help, maybe? Tell them you’ve been kidnapped?” “So you go to jail and I, what? Wait for your brother to come kill me for causing you more problems?” I roll my eyes. In an instant, he's in my face. “I can’t afford any legal entangl

I turn to Maeve. “Wait here, let me make sure whoever did this is gone.” I tell her before quietly walking into her store. I lift my nose in the air, smelling the burning scent that I’ve only smelled a couple of times in my life. The scent of witches. Before I’ve taken two steps, the door behind me opens and Maeve walks in. I growl at her. I don’t know that it’s safe yet. “They aren’t here. I have a spell on the place letting me know if someone is inside.” I tell him. “Do you know who did this?” She looks at me and scoffs. “Let’s just say your family aren't the only ones that wants me dead.” “We aren’t going to kill you.” I say, gritting my teeth. I can’t stand how cavalier she sounds talking about her death, as if dying at 18 is normal. “Well, maybe you’ll get lucky and someone will do your brother’s dirty work for him.” She says, looking around then walking into a back room. Einar is snarling that there is someone trying to kill our mate. It’s a good thing I’ll be keeping her

Why does this guy have to smell so good? It’s distracting and I need to focus. He smells like the coffee shop my father used to take me to in the mornings before school. Rich, dark, freshly ground coffee with a hint of cream and sugar. Right now, he’s standing behind me, so close I can feel the heat of his body radiating off of him. Geez, he’s warm. Must be a wolfy thing. “How do you know those goons worked for her?” He asks me. I never considered myself short. I’m not exactly tall either, but I’m an average 5’6” tall woman. This guy is nearly a foot taller than I am. And his shoulders are wider than mine, by enough that it’s noticeable and don’t even get me started on how muscular he is. Snap out of it, Maeve! His family wants to kill you. Yeah, but, I swear he was flirting with me earlier. And I saw his eyes flicker before too. I’m not sure, but I think that means his wolf was coming forward. I have no idea if that’s good or bad. “I recognize them.” I say, moving away from him.

I know this burner phone is the connection to her family. While I was on the phone to my pack making arrangements to have someone come clean and fix Maeve’s shop, I snuck upstairs. Three bedrooms. While the scent of the goons was up there, I could smell the family scent much more strongly. One female, one male and I’d bet my future position as CEO that they are both juveniles. I had intended to take her upstairs and force her to tell me where they are, but when she indicated that we were being monitored, I changed my plan. She doesn’t seem concerned about them coming back and ‘M’ said they were safe. So, for now, I’ll leave it at that. When we were walking to the car, I smelled them before I saw them. I turned, putting myself between them and my mate. I don’t care that we’re in the middle of a busy part of town, humans passing us all around. If they try to take her, I will kill them. “Sorry, guys, this girl is taken, go find your own.” I say, my claws coming out. I hear Maeve suck i

It was good to speak to Meadow and Tate. I know they want to come home, but it’s definitely not the right time. It may never be again. I reluctantly gave my phone back to Xander before turning my attention back to the landscape passing us by. When we get to the packhouse, Xander shows me to a room. When we walk in, he looks at me and frowns. “I just realized you don’t have any clothes or anything.” I shrug. I’ll make do. I watch as his eyes go unfocused. A moment later, there’s a knock at the door and Leana walks in. “Hi Maeve. Xander said you need some clothes and some toiletries. I wanted to get your sizes and see if there is anything in particular you want or need as far as bath or hair products.” “You don’t need to get me anything. I’m sure I’ll be fine.” I look at Xander. “I won’t be here long, right?” I watch as his lips press together. Rather than answer me, he turns to look at Leana and walks out of the room. I look at her. When we get home, it’s a very similar situation to being in the pack. Avery, Lynn and Penny all come by to say hi and hold Felicity, cooing over her and talking babies with Maeve. “You know, Xander, we should build a nursery in the building." Maeve says to me that night. "Penny and Avery are pregnant, we have Felicity, and Lynn has her two little ones. I’m sure there will be other babies as the wolves find their mates and the witches find their pairings. I’d feel better about leaving Felicity here while I’m working and I know Lynn would feel better about it too,” she tells me. So, I talked to my father and a week later, I bring her to the 12th floor, where the Holstin Enterprise offices are. There, we can hear loud music and banging in the offices on the other side of the floor from ours. “What’

I went from fearing for my life, struggling to keep my family together and still run a business to having a thriving business, an incredible mate, a family that is safe, and I now belong to a werewolf pack. It’s not official yet, Xander wanted to wait until our daughter was born. But Meadow and Tate both agreed and became official members of the Shadow Falls pack. Both of the were excited to have a low level ability to mind link, at least with the ranked members, and Rich's family. Today, I’m sitting on the back porch with Emlyn as she rocks her newborn. Rich and Xander put additional rocking chairs out here so super-pregnant women like me and young mothers like Emlyn could be comfortable and still be outside enjoying the fresh air. “How can I be so large, and uncomfortable but watching my mate sparring still gets me all worked up?” I ask her as we watch Xander and Rich spar each other. Before we leave the castle, we search the house, making sure that there is no one else there and that Levana isn’t hiding somewhere, unbeknownst to Laris. Once we find it empty, I have my team set up cameras and security, so we can watch and see if she returns. As soon as we’re back to the pack lands, I take Maeve in to see Dr. Teresa. She used a lot of energy and a lot of magic in that fight, not to mention getting stressed out about Laris Bevan calling the werewolves filty and blights on society. Secretly, I loved that my mate is acting so possessive. As a wolf, possessiveness is how we show that someone is ours, that we want them, claim them. So she basically told the entire room of supernaturals that I was hers. And while I was worried about her getting herself all worked up, it made me feel special. ‘You are special,’ Maeve says in my mind. My heads whips to hers where she’s lying on the hospital bed waiting to see Dr. Teresa. “You can hear my thoughts?” I ask her out loud.
