Spencer hung up the phone and began to get dressed.

Ariana, still basking in the afterglow of extreme pleasure, lay on the bed lazily. She watched as he pulled up his pants and put on his shirt, covering his well-defined abs.

As he dressed, he said, "Jojo's brother was in a car accident. I'm going to check on him. If it's serious, help me contact the hospital. On second thought, come with me."

Ariana didn't move.

Spencer was already buttoning his shirt. He turned back to stare at her with a frown. "Why aren't you moving?"

"I don't think it's my duty to help your…" She paused, searching for the right word. Then, she continued, "Why should I help your mistress' brother?"

Spencer shot back at her coldly, "You're a doctor. It's your duty to save lives. Don't be so heartless, Ariana."

Ariana let out a mocking laugh. How ridiculous and ironic this was.

Spencer demanded his lawfully wedded wife to help the brother of his mistress. Moreover, he insisted that it was her duty and told her not to be heartless.

How could she have been so blind back then?

Spencer suddenly climbed onto the bed and propped himself above her with his hands on her sides. He looked down at her and bit her earlobe lightly.

"Were you not satisfied with my service just now?"

20 minutes later, Spencer drove Ariana to the scene. Her brother had only suffered minor scrapes and had already been taken away by an ambulance.

Joanne stood alone by the roadside. When she saw Spencer get out of the car, she rushed into his arms. It was only then that she noticed Ariana. A hint of dissatisfaction appeared on her tear-streaked face.

"Spence, why is she also here?" Joanne asked.

Ariana casually swept her hair back because a few strands were stuck inside her coat, itching her neck.

Joanne noticed the long trail of hickeys on her neck and behind her ears.

And these were just the visible ones. What about the parts of her body that were obscured? Ariana was definitely showing off and doing it on purpose!

Jealousy spread like a raging fire in Joanne's heart. She let go of Spencer and tugged at his sleeve pitifully as she looked up at him with tearful eyes. "I'm sorry for causing you trouble again, but I was so scared…"

Spencer's expression visibly softened. "It's okay. Don't be afraid. I'll handle it."

Watching them being lovey-dovey, Ariana couldn't help but speak up, "Can I leave now, Mr. Ulrich?"

Spencer glanced at her, then turned back to Joanne. "I'll take you home first."

"I'm scared." Joanne clung to his arm. "Don't leave me, please. Stay with me tonight, okay?"

Spencer agreed. He looked at Ariana and said, "You can go home now."

Ariana stared at him for a few seconds, saying nothing. Then, she turned to leave.

Spencer instinctively took a step forward, but Joanne clung to his arm and shook it while sobbing to monopolize his attention. "I was so scared, Spence…"

He said a few soothing words perfunctorily. By the time he looked up again, Ariana's elegant figure had disappeared from his sight.

Exhausted from the night's ordeal, Ariana almost couldn't get up the next day. During the morning meeting in the hospital, she stifled the urge to yawn by pressing her lips together tightly.

Jensen, who was sitting next to her, nudged her and stealthily slipped something into her hand.

Ariana took it. When the medical director wasn't looking, she quickly popped it into her mouth.

It was her favorite chocolate ganache. The sweet and fragrant confection melted in her mouth instantly. After the meeting, Jensen got his hands on a cup of hot coffee from somewhere and gave it to her.

"What have you been up to last night? You look so tired," Jensen remarked.

Ariana sipped her coffee and read her patients' charts. Without looking up, she replied, "I watched a ridiculous farce. It was quite amusing."

Jensen leaned closer. "What farce?"

Ariana closed the file and replied blandly, "I forgot after sleeping."

A nurse called for Jensen, and he instantly reverted to his composed and serious demeanor reserved for other people. "I'm coming."

He turned to Ariana and patted her head gently while reminding her, "Make sure to eat well. You seem to have lost weight."

Before she could swat his hand away, he left in quick strides.

With a smile on her face, Ariana shook her head at Jensen's antics. She then went on her rounds and performed surgeries.

She was busy with work until almost noon when she noticed about six missed calls on her phone. They were all from Kieran and Winifred.

Ariana decided that she should call them back.

As soon as the call connected, Kieran began to berate her, saying, "Are you trying to drive me to an early death? I told you to help me secure that project. Did you not take my words seriously?"

Of course, Ariana had no idea what was going on. But from Kieran's words, she gathered that he didn't manage to secure the project he had his eye on.

She said, "Dad, there are gains and losses in business. Isn't this a normal thing?"

"Spencer is my son-in-law! Yet, I can't even secure a project from his subsidiary. I've become the laughingstock in the business world! Do you have any idea how humiliated I am right now?" Kieran screeched over the phone.

There was the sound of someone else taking the phone, and Winifred's voice came on, "Ari, your father and I work so hard for you. We only have you. All this will be yours in the future."

Ariana said, "But I don't need you to work so hard—"

"Nonsense!" Kieran snatched the phone back. "I demand an explanation for this. Go find Spencer and deal with this right now!"

"Why don't you do it yourself?" Ariana retorted.

"Ariana!" Kieran was enraged. "Are you biting the hand that fed you now? Will you go or not? Do you want all your grandfather's efforts to go down the drain? And what about your grandmother? She'd be rolling in her grave!"

The call ended abruptly, and the room fell silent again. Ariana took a deep breath and removed her white coat. During her lunch break, she went to Spencer's company.

Since it was almost lunchtime, the receptionists were a bit lax. They were chatting amongst themselves, and Ariana overheard them.

According to them, Joanne had gotten out of Spencer's car that morning.

Ariana wondered if they had been together the whole night and whether Spencer had slept with Joanne.

When she reached the top floor, she saw Joanne right as she exited the elevator.

She was sitting at her desk, and Spencer was standing next to her. He was speaking to her in a hushed and gentle voice. She would occasionally cover her mouth and giggle. Then, she would blink at Spencer in a cute and playful way like an innocent little girl.

From the side, Joanne's face overlapped with another familiar face in Ariana's memory.

Ariana cleared her throat softly, and both of them looked up at the same time.

A frown appeared on Spencer's forehead as soon as he spotted her. "What are you doing here? Is there something you need?"

"Let's talk in your office. It's important," Ariana said.

Joanne stood up abruptly. Her face was a little pale as she bit her lip nervously. "I'll leave…"

Spencer stopped her. "Where are you going? It's not like there's anything between us that you can't know. You can stay and listen."

"Don't say that." Joanne tugged at his sleeve, staring at him with innocent eyes. "Ari may not agree."

Ariana couldn't hold back anymore and rebuked harshly, "Who are you calling Ari?"

Joanne's eyes reddened as she was flustered, and she shook her head. "I'm sorry, Dr. Lubove. That was rude of me…" She then took a step back and bowed before Ariana. Not only did she bow, but she also remained in that position for a long time.Spencer lost his cool immediately. "Why are you doing this, Ariana? Jojo just happened to address you by your nickname. Is there a need to make such a huge fuss?""Only my parents and my close friends get to call me that. She's neither." Ariana's lips curled into a disdainful half-smile. "You two carry on." With that, she turned and walked away. Spencer wanted to go after her, but he felt a tug on his sleeve. He turned to see Joanne looking at him with tears streaming down her face. "Spence…""Wait here."After saying that, Spencer hurriedly chased after Ariana.Joanne slowly clenched her hands into fists, and her nails dug into her flesh. Ariana had no idea what could happen.Sienna suddenly said, "There's a charity auction tonight. Why don't you attend it with me?""Weren't we talking about Joanne? Why the change of topic?"Sienna replied mysteriously, "Oh, you'll find out why soon. But before the event, drop by my place so that I can have someone do your makeup."Ariana didn't have any surgery scheduled for that day, so she took an hour off in the afternoon and went to Sienna's place. The moment she reached there, Sienna sat her down in front of the vanity and asked the makeup artist to work her magic. The makeup artist she hired was well-known in the entertainment industry. She had done many iconic looks for various celebrities. She praised, "Ms. Lubove, your skin is flawless. It's like you don't have any pores. With your looks, it's a shame you're not in showbiz."Ariana replied, "I'd just be a pretty face and nothing more. I don't have that kind of talent.""Some people would love to be a pretty face. But

Spencer wasn't fond of Ariana in the first place. Now that she was chatting with another man so brazenly, Joanne thought that this would further fuel his hatred for her.So, she continued to say things that would upset Spencer, "Dr. Lubove is amazing. She can chat with anyone so effortlessly. In contrast, I seem incompetent. I don't dare to strike up a conversation with strangers, especially men—"Before she could finish, she cried out in surprise. Spencer had taken a large step forward, and he forcibly dragged her along. Joanne was wearing high heels, and the dress hindered her steps. However, Spencer didn't seem to care as he strode ahead at an alarmingly fast pace.Joanne had to trot to keep up, causing her to lose any semblance of elegance and grace. She ended up looking utterly disheveled.Everyone's eyes were on her. She even heard whispers."Is that Mr. Ulrich's assistant? Did you see her dress? I went to that art exhibition. Ariana returned to the auction hall to find that Jensen had already bought another diamond necklace for Sienna. Spencer and Joanne, however, didn't return. After the auction ended, Jensen dragged Ariana and Sienna to a bar. Despite knowing they couldn't drink because they had to work the next day, they still went.Once at the bar, Sienna received a call from a client and left in a hurry. Jensen ordered fruit juice for Ariana and himself. He insisted on sipping on his juice and watching others dance. Even when Ariana felt nauseous from drinking too much juice, he still refused to leave. Unable to put up with it any longer, Ariana said to him, "Drink all you want. I'm leaving."Finally, Jensen stood up and offered to drive her home. Something seemed to be troubling him. Ariana held back from prodding until they reached her place. As expected, he turned off the engine but didn't let her out of the car."What's going on? Since when did you have a problem expressing your thoughts

The voice sounded familiar—it was Joanne! Spencer followed the sound and pushed open the two doors leading to the fire escape stairwell."Spence!"Spencer looked down and frowned deeply. Ariana was on the ground, and the expression on her face reflected the pain she was feeling. She was clutching her ankle and looking up at him.Spencer had always known that Ariana was beautiful, but he didn't acknowledge this much. He believed that physical appearances mattered the least when it came to appreciating the beauty of someone or something in totality.Yet, when Ariana looked up at him with tears swimming in her gorgeous hazel eyes, her beauty stunned him momentarily."Spence!" Joanne called out again. She had also fallen and was in pain, but why was Spencer's gaze only focused on Ariana?Joanne's voice snapped Spencer back to his senses. He immediately turned his attention to her, taking hurried steps down the stairs to get to her side.He bent down and asked, "What happened?"

Ariana was stunned by the scene.Although Jensen had a sharp tongue and a whimsical personality, he was actually serious and stoic when he was working. If not, the female doctors and nurses wouldn't have been charmed by his chaste and polite facade.Of course Spencer was even more stoic and mature. He was the type who'd always keep his cool, even if the world came crashing down on him.It was shocking enough that Jensen started the fight. But why did Spencer start fighting as well? Both Jensen and Spencer were clearly trained in close combat. Every attack they delivered was packed with tremendous force. They traded blows with each other, their skill levels seemingly on par with each other. No matter how anxious Ariana was, she couldn't leave her wheelchair at all."Hey! Both of you, stop fighting already! Jensen! Spencer! Stop it, both of you!"Ariana was extremely pissed, to say the least. The sight of Jensen losing the fight also fueled her anxiety. She knew Spencer would nev

Ariana could barely believe her ears. What did Spencer say just now? He really was a monster, wasn't he?She was already injured, yet all he could think about was having sex with her.Having spotted Ariana's shocked expression, Spencer stripped his shirt off. "You don't have to move."Ariana's cheeks colored out of anger. Somehow, it enhanced her beauty even more. She glared at Spencer furiously while snarling out, "You… You monster!"He responded by leaning closer to her. He supported his weight with one hand placed on the couch's backseat as he began to edge closer to her. "How can I ever satisfy your urges if I don't do that? Mrs. Ulrich, make your choice. You want to continue this in our bedroom, or do you want to do it right here?"Ariana tried to push Spencer away. "Do it, then! I dare you!""Why won't I?" Spencer gripped Ariana's wrist. "You were the one who forbade me from being intimate with other women. What do you think I should do, then?"A surge of anger and emb

"What's wrong?" Ariana asked."It's something to do with the hospital," Jensen replied. "Someone's trying to join my department through their connections.""As a doctor?"Jensen said, "He didn't even take the exam. How can he be a doctor? I've read his files. Seriously, he's… You know what? I'll just show them to you."Then, he pulled out his phone and passed it to Ariana.Ariana didn't get to see the files, for she glanced at the photo, which was pasted on the upper right corner of the résumé.Jeremy Yates? Then, she glanced at the name on the résumé. It really was him.Ariana decided not to look at the résumé after that. She asked, "Did he join the hospital through the regular hiring channel?""Of course not. People with his credentials would've been eliminated during the résumés screening process. Someone visited Dr. Caton in person. You've always known that I'm the one in charge of hiring medical personnel for my department.""Then, just follow the principles. Calm down,"

Ariana lowered her gaze, her lashes hiding the emotions in her eyes. Spencer could not see them, but he imagined her expression remained as distant as ever."I just want to know if we could still be friends," he continued softly.Ariana paused for several seconds before shaking her head. Spencer's voice was strained with pain as he spoke, "I know it's an inappropriate request, but if we don't try this approach, I might not be able to stop pursuing you." "So you're saying if I don't agree to be friends, you'll keep bothering me?" Ariana finally looked at him directly. "Are you threatening me?"His words reminded her of Zane, who had used the same tactic. She wondered if all men thought this way—when pursuit failed, they would settle for friendship as a consolation prize.Spencer met her gaze. "That's not it. "Losing control makes us no better than animals. You're better than that.""Maybe being an animal would hurt less," Spencer muttered."If that's your attitude, then there's nothing left to discuss." Jacob was getting exasperated with him. "That man isn't right for her!" Spencer burst out, recounting everything that had happened.Jacob shook his head. "They have a child together. "Still, he shouldn't have hit anyone!" Ariana sighed as she looked at his face, now swollen and red. "Does it hurt?"Sam's eyes welled up with tears. "Yeah, it hurts like hell..."Spencer stood nearby, his fists clenched tight. For some reason, Sam just made his blood boil, and he wanted nothing more than to punch him again."Mr. Ulrich," Ariana said while supporting Sam. "Let me say this one last time—stay out of my life. Since Sam's willing to let this go, I won't press charges, but if there's a next time, I will call the police."After her warning, Ariana helped Sam inside their house. They both froze in their tracks when they saw Leo standing in the doorway—neither knew how long he had been awake or how much he had heard."Leo," Ariana quickly spoke up. "I'm younger, more devoted, and I'd never hurt her or flirt with another woman. What makes you think you're better?""This is between Ari and me. It doesn't concern you.""It doesn't concern me? "I already told him, but I'll emphasize it to him again. By the way, when are you heading to Orkney? I want to pick up Leo!""Tomorrow afternoon," Ariana replied. "But don't worry about picking him up—he's coming with me."When Ariana hung up, she found Leo watching her expectantly. He jumped into her arms as soon as she put down her phone. "Mom, are you done? Dennis could not help glancing in the rearview mirror at that comment. Meanwhile, Ariana looked at Sam and blurted out, "Marriage? Did you forget what we agreed on?""I remember," Sam replied.
