Chapter 2 He's Here

Author: reallycat
Sophia's POV

"Jared, how could you do this?" I collapsed, dropping to my knees.

There were no other firefighters in sight. With no other choice, I began to dig through the rubble with my bare hands. My nails tore, and blood streaked my hands, but I couldn't stop. Molly needed me.

My hands throbbed, and my head spun with dizziness. Just when I felt I might pass out, a metal pipe suddenly appeared in front of me.

"Ma'am, do you need help? Wait, Sophia?" A familiar voice sounded from behind me.

"Alexander?" I looked up, stunned to see him there.

"I'm back in town on business. Forget about this," he said, quickly wedging the pipe under a massive stone beside Molly. "Maybe this will work."

I stood beside him and steadied the pipe with all my strength. Finally, with a heavy, gut-wrenching sound, we managed to pry the huge rock off together.

"Mommy..." Molly's soft voice whispered as she smiled up at me from under the rubble, her hand going limp.

Even so, she still clutched that plush bear, the one she'd planned to give to Jared.

"Don't sleep, sweetheart. Stay with me," I leaned in, wrapping her in my arms. "Don't leave me, sweetheart."

...

Two hours later, Molly was admitted to the hospital. She lay unconscious on the bed, pale and motionless.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry." The doctor's voice was somber. "Your daughter was buried under the debris for a long time. Her condition is critical."

"No..." I started to sob, the weight of everything crashing over me.

After a few minutes, I forced myself to calm down, though bitterness welled up inside me.

"How ironic!" I laughed bitterly.

Jared was a great firefighter. Every time there was a fire, he was on the front lines, saving families and giving people hope.

In daily life, he was the same, always helping others wherever he could, shining his warmth and light on everyone around him.

Everyone praised him, and our married life had always been good.

Jared was handsome, tall, and an incredibly caring husband. He'd make me breakfast, bring me little surprises after work, and always plan something special for anniversaries—flowers, candlelit dinners, moonlit walks. We had a life filled with beautiful memories. It felt like a perfect dream.

But then, Charlotte came back. Everything had changed since then.

Jared's first love, freshly divorced and struggling, returned to town with her daughter. I felt sympathy for her, so every time Jared went to help her out, I supported him.

But slowly, things changed. Jared's focus shifted. The last time Molly invited us to her school's family day, Jared claimed he was too busy with work.

Yet, I saw him there, holding hands with Charlotte and Mia, laughing as they strolled around the campus.

Molly could only stay in the corner, watching other kids play with their parents. Her face was filled with disappointment.

Snapping back to the present, I sighed and looked down at Molly's sleeping face.

Her brow was furrowed. Even in sleep, she seemed unsettled. I bent down and kissed her gently on the forehead.

"Who's going to help us now?" I whispered to the empty room. "Jared, you need to take responsibility. You're Molly's father, for God's sake."

I dialed his number, my hands trembling.

"Sophia, I'm so sorry," Jared said sincerely. "I wish I could be there, but you know how demanding my job is."

"Jared, I need that helmet," someone called out in the background.

"Sorry, it's a bit noisy here," Jared said gently.

But he had no idea what he was missing.

"Can't you ask for some time off or arrange something with a coworker? Jared, your daughter..." I began, but the line went dead.

"Mommy, was that Daddy?" Molly's weak voice startled me.

She looked up, eyes pleading.

The machines in the room beeped louder as her heart was starting to falter.

"I want to see him," she murmured, her face turning paler. "I haven't seen Daddy in so long."

Her words tore at me, and I clenched my fists.

'No, I have to try again. Jared needs to be here,' I thought, calling him again.

"Sophia?" He sounded surprised this time.

"Come to the children's hospital, Jared," I said, my voice shaking. "I'm begging you. The doctor said Molly's condition was bad."

There was a moment of silence. Then he said, "Don't do this, Sophia. Don't lie to guilt me into abandoning my responsibilities. There are people out there who need me."

"I'm not lying. Molly's really..." I said urgently, but he cut me off.

"I'll make it up to you both. You're everything to me. I would never abandon you. Please believe that," he said. "Tell Molly I love her. Always."

And then he hung up.

I found it hard to believe. He thought I would lie about Molly's life.

Steel had pierced her body, and her organs were failing. The doctors had warned me that her chances were slim. Yet, Jared still refused to visit Molly in the hospital.

I sank to the floor, wrapping my arms around myself as sobs wracked my body.

Just then, a shadow fell across me. I looked up, hope surging as I thought it might be Jared.

I stood and forced myself to follow, calling out, "Jared!"

But he rushed past, not even glancing my way. He had lied.

Fury coursed through me, making my body tremble. He was right there in this hospital, yet he wouldn't spare even a moment for Molly.

Charlotte's POVI still hadn't won Jared over. It made me doubt my efforts.I had to escalate my plan, to shatter everything Sophia held dear."She's already lost her daughter and the home she fought so hard to keep," I mused, a smug smile spreading across my face as I rolled down the car window. My gaze locked onto the middle-aged woman standing anxiously across the street. Linda Holmes, Sophia's mother, was my next target.Linda was an innocent bystander, but her relationship with Sophia made her a pawn in my game. If Jared didn't care so deeply for Sophia, I wouldn't have to resort to such drastic measures.I stepped out of the car and approached her.Linda was dressed in a tailored suit, the epitome of a gentle university professor. Her soft demeanor mirrored Sophia's meekness, and I knew she wouldn't put up much of a fight. But the real advantage lay in her heart condition. Sophia's overprotectiveness had always revolved around Linda's fragile health, and I intended to exp

Charlotte's POV"I knew it. Jared wouldn't be so heartless," I squealed, leaping to my feet as the TV screen lit up with the image of me clinging to his arm.The footage was from months ago, back when we were still on good terms and when he didn't mind Mia and me hanging all over him. Now? He'd never allow it. But this was a sign—a chance to mend things.Jared could've demanded the clip be switched. The fire department had recorded plenty of segments. And the best part? Sophia would fight with him when she saw this.Jared's impression of her would sour. All I needed to do was get to Jared's place before he returned. No man could resist a gentle, apologetic woman. He'd come back to me.I raced to Jared's house, my heart pounding with anticipation. But when I arrived, the sight stopped me cold. This was Sophia's house once. The garden, once meticulously trimmed, was now overrun with weeds. If not for the faint glow of light inside, I'd have thought the place was abandoned."Jared

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 43 Not Forgetting Her

Sophia's POVAfter Jared lay down on the extra bed, he quickly fell asleep.Meanwhile, my stomach churned with pain, keeping me awake until dawn."Feeling better?" Jared asked eagerly as soon as I stirred. "Do you want something to eat? I'll go grab some breakfast." I wanted to drive him away, but his kind gestures gave me pause. I considered forgiving him, but Molly's death was an insurmountable barrier.Just as I was about to speak, my stomach growled. I could only nod slightly in response. He hurried out of the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I couldn't remember the last time I'd seen him so attentive. From the moment we married, his mantra had always been, "I have endless work, I'm sure you'll understand."At first, he would carve out some time for me, but over the years, those moments became fewer and farther between, filled out by sheer lies."Sophia?" Jared's voice pulled me from my thoughts, and I looked up to see him standing in the doorway, a breakfast tray

Sophia's POVAlexander held me carefully, lowering me onto the stretcher before they wheeled me back to my ward.He didn't relax until he was sure I was okay. Jared followed us the entire way. I simply ignored him."I didn't expect you to be here," I said."I came to bring you these." Alexander gestured to a file folder resting at the foot of my bed.Picking it up, he placed it in front of me. "I've prepared everything you asked for."I flipped through the documents. The divorce paperwork was all in order. All that was left was Jared's signature."Thank you." I met his gaze, my gratitude sincere. "Are you all right? Did you get hurt?""I'm fine," he replied, placing an exquisite package in front of me. "Oh, and I brought you your favorite donuts. Try them."Alexander and I had been out of touch for years, yet he still remembered what I liked. It was a small gesture, but it meant the world to me.Jared, on the other hand, had lived with me every day, yet he didn't even know wh

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 41 I Love You

Sophia's POV"How could you do this to me?" Charlotte protested bitterly. "You promised to take care of me. Have you forgotten?" Jared stood firm, his voice steady but cold. "That was just friendly care. But not anymore. You hurt my wife. I can't just pretend nothing happened."Charlotte's face crumpled, and she wiped away her tears with a trembling hand. "Fine. I won't bother you anymore. I'll take care of Mia on my own."With that, she turned and ran off. Jared's expression remained stoic. He exhaled and turned to face me. "Trust me. I'll never have anything to do with her again."His belated regret meant nothing to me. Molly was gone, and so was our love. I'd given him countless chances, and he'd never cherished them. There was no turning back.I closed my eyes, shutting him out."Do you want something to eat? I can..." he added, his voice grating on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard.I itched to slap him and drive him away, but the pain in my stomach had drained me of

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 40 Don't Want to See You

Sophia's POV"Wow, a damsel saving the hero." I clapped mockingly, ignoring the blood trickling down my hand. "After this little performance, will you two kiss and take it to bed?"I laughed with amusement, knowing it was a staged show."He's not your husband yet, is he?" I added, feigning regret.I knew she had been fantasizing about becoming Mrs. Anderson."Your hand is bleeding." Jared stepped toward me, reaching to staunch the bleeding.I jerked away, pressing my palm hard against the wound."Stop provoking her, Jared," Charlotte advised him with faux concern. "She probably needs space. This isn't good for her recovery."She deserved an Oscar for that performance."Spare me the act, Jared. It's nauseating," I scoffed. This frozen charade was ridiculous. If he adored her so much, he should sweep her into his arms and take her away immediately.Turning to Charlotte, who clung to his arm like ivy, I added, "Try harder. I'd love to hand this role over to you.""Can you stop
