Chapter 13 Three Days

Author: reallycat
Sophia's POV

Jared paused for a moment. "Nicholas took her, didn't he?"

"Yes," I replied, my voice cold and dismissive.

This question didn't sound like something he would ask. It appeared that Charlotte had fed him another lie.

I didn't bother explaining. He wouldn't believe me anyway.

"I hope she's having fun." Jared reached out and took my hand. "And I hope she doesn't blame me for not being there with her."

"You can explain it to her yourself." I looked up into his eyes and pushed him away. "Meet me three days later at 10 am. Don't be late."

"Okay, I'll apologize to her then." He sighed in relief. "I'll bring her lots of gifts."

Molly no longer needed them.

I stared at the heartless man. He didn't deserve to be a father. I couldn't wait to see his reaction at Molly's funeral.

I had so much more to say, but then his phone rang, interrupting the moment.

"Sorry, I need to..." He looked at me apologetically, waving his phone.

His captain's number was flashing on the screen.

Sophia's POV"Well, well, look who we have here." Charlotte's laughter was sharp and mocking, her eyes on Alexander. "Is this your new boyfriend? Come on. Stop pretending you're so devoted to Jared. I could never match up to you. I mean, at least I'm a divorced woman, not pretending to be a saint.""Oh, trust me, I'd never compare to you, Charlotte," I shot back. "After all, you're chasing after someone else's husband.""Jared and I are in love! You wouldn't understand," she snapped, her voice laced with scorn."Love?" Alexander gave her a cold once-over. "If you mean taking welfare checks, then your standards of love are really low. Do you realize the house you're living in belongs to Sophia? She has every right to throw you out.""You wish!" Charlotte pulled out her phone and began snapping pictures of Alexander and me. "Wait until Jared sees these! Acting like a loving mother, but here you are with another man.""Put the phone away!" Alexander reached out to grab it from her.

Sophia's POV"Don't be sad. You can trust me to handle all of this," Alexander sighed. "I'll make sure they pay for what they've done."Alexander was a top-notch lawyer. At a young age, he had become a partner in a prestigious law firm with hundreds of employees. If he wanted to, he could effortlessly kick Charlotte out of my house."Leave it to me, Alexander," I insisted, shaking my head. "I don't want you getting pulled into something messy because of me.""It's okay. I'm your friend, and I won't let him hurt you like this," Alexander said, patting my shoulder."Thanks, but I don't want to drag you into this mess," I said, fidgeting with the car keys in my hand. "You've seen how difficult Charlotte can be.""Well, if that's what you want, what can I say?" he said, smiling helplessly at me. "But I still think you should tell him the truth. If he keeps misunderstanding, it could affect your relationship and your life.""Molly's funeral is in three days. He'll know the truth the

Sophia's POV"Oh Lord! How could this happen?" Linda collapsed into the chair, her voice breaking as she began to sob, "Molly was just a child. She had her whole life ahead of her.""Mom, don't cry." I moved over and wrapped my arms around her, holding her close."Just last month, she was fine. You even brought her over to visit." She looked up at me, her eyes filled with grief. "I just can't believe it.""You saw the news about the mall collapse, right?" I took a deep breath, fighting to keep my voice steady. "She was trapped under the rubble and badly injured. She didn't make it. If Jared hadn't turned his back on us, Molly could've survived.""What? He left you?" Linda's face hardened, and she pulled me close. "I thought, at the very least, he'd take care of you and Molly. If I'd known it would come to this, I'd never have let you marry him."He'd been such a hero, admired by everyone. Back when we got married, I believed he would be good to me.I didn't know why things turne

Sophia's POV"Mommy! Look!" Molly spun around, her dress fluttering. "Do you think Daddy will love my new dress as much as I do?"Her eyes sparkled, her curls cascading over her shoulders as she smiled at me like an angel."Molly, my sweet girl." I smiled and walked toward her, slowly reaching out my hand. But the moment I touched her arm, she turned into a cloud of mist and vanished before my eyes."Molly, don't go!" I screamed, jerking awake, my heart racing as I reached into the emptiness around me, desperate to hold onto her."Molly," I sighed, slowly sitting up in Molly's bedroom. Her toys were still arranged as they always were, but their owner was gone.Molly was gone. It had all been just a dream. How I wished she could come back to me!I lay back on her bed, clutching her blanket and sobbing uncontrollably. I could only feel her presence through her belongings. Her funeral was approaching. Soon, I wouldn't even have these moments alone with her things."My poor girl

Sophia's POV"The funeral will now begin," I announced, looking over the somber faces gathered before me.My head was spinning, but I knew I couldn't collapse. Molly had only me now. This feeling was awful. It was so ironic. I was conducting Molly's funeral alone while Jared was still comforting Charlotte."This is all your fault! You killed Molly!" Jared's mother rushed up, and before I knew it, her hands were clenched around my collar. She shook me as if she wanted to wring the life out of me. "Why don't you die?""Take it easy!" Some people stepped forward to help, trying to pull her away, but she was like a beast out of control.I tried to push her away, but I was too weak."Go to hell!" She raised her hand high.I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the sting of her slap. The seconds stretched, but nothing happened. When I opened my eyes, Alexander was there, gripping her wrist firmly."Who are you? Let go of me!" she screamed. "I'll call the police!""It doesn't matter w

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 19 She Doesn't Need Me

Jared's POVI followed Sophia to the children's hospital, keeping a safe distance. She looked so fragile, as if she might collapse at any moment. I should have gone to help her. Besides, I wanted to know how badly Molly was injured. But before I could reach her, Charlotte approached. From where I stood, I could only see them arguing heatedly. I was too far away to hear what they were arguing about. All I knew was that both women were upset. They should be resting, not fighting like this.Just as I started forward, Alexander appeared, slipping his arm around Sophia as if he had every right. Anger flared inside me. She didn't need me anymore. She had Alexander now.I walked away without a second thought, not caring what happened next.An hour later, Charlotte sent me a message asking me to accompany her to the police station as her family member. I didn't hesitate and rushed over. When I got there, I saw Alexander standing in front of Sophia, shielding her.Sophia was my wife, and

Jared's POV"It was Sophia, right?" Charlotte murmured, leaning against me.I gently moved her off and sat down on the couch, putting a bit of distance between us.She leaned in close again and stared at me, a small smile playing on her lips.I didn't know what was up with her that night. She'd been acting so strangely ever since I got there."Charlotte?" I asked, puzzled by her behavior."Jared, there's something I need to ask you," she sighed, her gaze shifting from her hands back to my face. "Do you still have feelings for me? I mean, you've been so attentive lately, and it's making me wonder..."Her words freaked me out. It was unthinkable for me, a married man.It was true that I hadn't been thrilled with the way things were going with Sophia, but Charlotte's thought was absurd."Don't get it wrong, Charlotte. I don't love you anymore," I said, shaking my head. "I just felt bad seeing you struggle with Mia."I stood up, heading for the door. "I only see you as family. I

Sophia's POV Jared stumbled forward toward the casket. The moment his eyes landed on Molly's face, he froze."No!" he screamed, staggering backward, his legs giving out beneath him.I walked over and looked down at him with a calm detachment."This can't be true!" he shouted, clutching his head. "How? Molly was fine."He crawled forward, reaching out to grab Molly's arm. "Sweetheart, get up and tell me this is all just a prank."I watched without saying anything.Molly lay in the coffin, her eyes closed. Her expression was peaceful, as though she were merely asleep. But the truth was far harsher. Her body bore numerous injuries, meticulously hidden by the mortician's careful work."Calm down, Jared. Your daughter is gone." Alexander and my brother flanked him, holding him back as he struggled to get closer to her.Jared's body went limp, and he collapsed to the ground. His hands covered his face as tears streamed down. "What happened? Molly, open your eyes, please!""You'

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 45 The Truth

Charlotte's POVI still hadn't won Jared over. It made me doubt my efforts.I had to escalate my plan, to shatter everything Sophia held dear."She's already lost her daughter and the home she fought so hard to keep," I mused, a smug smile spreading across my face as I rolled down the car window. My gaze locked onto the middle-aged woman standing anxiously across the street. Linda Holmes, Sophia's mother, was my next target.Linda was an innocent bystander, but her relationship with Sophia made her a pawn in my game. If Jared didn't care so deeply for Sophia, I wouldn't have to resort to such drastic measures.I stepped out of the car and approached her.Linda was dressed in a tailored suit, the epitome of a gentle university professor. Her soft demeanor mirrored Sophia's meekness, and I knew she wouldn't put up much of a fight. But the real advantage lay in her heart condition. Sophia's overprotectiveness had always revolved around Linda's fragile health, and I intended to exp

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 44 Let's Make Up

Charlotte's POV"I knew it. Jared wouldn't be so heartless," I squealed, leaping to my feet as the TV screen lit up with the image of me clinging to his arm.The footage was from months ago, back when we were still on good terms and when he didn't mind Mia and me hanging all over him. Now? He'd never allow it. But this was a sign—a chance to mend things.Jared could've demanded the clip be switched. The fire department had recorded plenty of segments. And the best part? Sophia would fight with him when she saw this.Jared's impression of her would sour. All I needed to do was get to Jared's place before he returned. No man could resist a gentle, apologetic woman. He'd come back to me.I raced to Jared's house, my heart pounding with anticipation. But when I arrived, the sight stopped me cold. This was Sophia's house once. The garden, once meticulously trimmed, was now overrun with weeds. If not for the faint glow of light inside, I'd have thought the place was abandoned."Jared

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 43 Not Forgetting Her

Sophia's POVAfter Jared lay down on the extra bed, he quickly fell asleep.Meanwhile, my stomach churned with pain, keeping me awake until dawn."Feeling better?" Jared asked eagerly as soon as I stirred. "Do you want something to eat? I'll go grab some breakfast." I wanted to drive him away, but his kind gestures gave me pause. I considered forgiving him, but Molly's death was an insurmountable barrier.Just as I was about to speak, my stomach growled. I could only nod slightly in response. He hurried out of the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I couldn't remember the last time I'd seen him so attentive. From the moment we married, his mantra had always been, "I have endless work, I'm sure you'll understand."At first, he would carve out some time for me, but over the years, those moments became fewer and farther between, filled out by sheer lies."Sophia?" Jared's voice pulled me from my thoughts, and I looked up to see him standing in the doorway, a breakfast tray

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 42 The Way You Are

Sophia's POVAlexander held me carefully, lowering me onto the stretcher before they wheeled me back to my ward.He didn't relax until he was sure I was okay. Jared followed us the entire way. I simply ignored him."I didn't expect you to be here," I said."I came to bring you these." Alexander gestured to a file folder resting at the foot of my bed.Picking it up, he placed it in front of me. "I've prepared everything you asked for."I flipped through the documents. The divorce paperwork was all in order. All that was left was Jared's signature."Thank you." I met his gaze, my gratitude sincere. "Are you all right? Did you get hurt?""I'm fine," he replied, placing an exquisite package in front of me. "Oh, and I brought you your favorite donuts. Try them."Alexander and I had been out of touch for years, yet he still remembered what I liked. It was a small gesture, but it meant the world to me.Jared, on the other hand, had lived with me every day, yet he didn't even know wh

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 41 I Love You

Sophia's POV"How could you do this to me?" Charlotte protested bitterly. "You promised to take care of me. Have you forgotten?" Jared stood firm, his voice steady but cold. "That was just friendly care. But not anymore. You hurt my wife. I can't just pretend nothing happened."Charlotte's face crumpled, and she wiped away her tears with a trembling hand. "Fine. I won't bother you anymore. I'll take care of Mia on my own."With that, she turned and ran off. Jared's expression remained stoic. He exhaled and turned to face me. "Trust me. I'll never have anything to do with her again."His belated regret meant nothing to me. Molly was gone, and so was our love. I'd given him countless chances, and he'd never cherished them. There was no turning back.I closed my eyes, shutting him out."Do you want something to eat? I can..." he added, his voice grating on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard.I itched to slap him and drive him away, but the pain in my stomach had drained me of

  • Sorry, My Darling   Chapter 40 Don't Want to See You

Sophia's POV"Wow, a damsel saving the hero." I clapped mockingly, ignoring the blood trickling down my hand. "After this little performance, will you two kiss and take it to bed?"I laughed with amusement, knowing it was a staged show."He's not your husband yet, is he?" I added, feigning regret.I knew she had been fantasizing about becoming Mrs. Anderson."Your hand is bleeding." Jared stepped toward me, reaching to staunch the bleeding.I jerked away, pressing my palm hard against the wound."Stop provoking her, Jared," Charlotte advised him with faux concern. "She probably needs space. This isn't good for her recovery."She deserved an Oscar for that performance."Spare me the act, Jared. It's nauseating," I scoffed. This frozen charade was ridiculous. If he adored her so much, he should sweep her into his arms and take her away immediately.Turning to Charlotte, who clung to his arm like ivy, I added, "Try harder. I'd love to hand this role over to you.""Can you stop

Sophia's POV"Mom, I'll always be by your side," Molly said. "I don't want to see you sad."Her figure slowly faded, becoming translucent before vanishing into the thin air."Go around the world and see it for me.""No."I woke up, tears streaming down my face, the dream still clinging to the edges of my consciousness. I wished I could stay asleep and be with Molly forever. She was such a sweet and lovely girl. She didn't deserve to leave this world at such a young age.Anger surged within me, a bitter taste in my mouth. 'It was all Jared's fault. Why did he have to do this to us?'I suddenly sensed a presence and jerked my head up.There, standing in the doorway, was Jared, holding a huge bouquet. On the small table next to him sat a massive cake."Sophia," he said softly. "You're finally awake. I've been waiting for so long.""What are you doing here?" I asked, surprised that he wasn't with Charlotte. He took a step closer, his hands shaking slightly as he brought the str

The thought seared through my mind as I coughed up a mouthful of blood.Jared rushed to my side, his face a mask of concern."How are you feeling?" he asked, his voice laced with an anxiety that seemed almost genuine. But I knew better. Jared's POV'What's happening? Why did Sophia collapse?' My mind raced, trying to piece together the sudden turn of events.I jerked my head up, my gaze darting frantically toward where Sophia had stood moments ago. Paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher and hurried out of the room.I had to follow them, to be by her side."Jared, I feel dizzy." Charlotte's voice, weak and pleading, pulled me back. She grabbed my arm, her body slumping against mine as if her legs could no longer support her. "Don't leave me. I can't breathe."Instinctively, I pulled her close, rubbing her back in slow, steady circles."Feeling better?" But the respite was short-lived."
