There's no way to know for sure from where the pianist was playing...not from her limited view, but the notes rang so clearly and distinctly in Celina's ears that it can't be very far. Maybe on the other side of the room.
An urge to find out for sure pushed at her, but she stood still. This musician was not looking to be listened to if they're playing in the sacredness of a closed room. That's why she heard. Celina fluttered her eyes shut and let the music soak into her mind and replace the ugly exhaustion, frustration, and hurt that's festered inside her.
She let the music soothe sink into her bones.
Celina was not sure how much time passed as she stood there, breathing in and out. The music never faltered for more than a second, the performer gliding his hands across the keys effortlessly. She realised the tune was entirely new, and for a second, she wondered if they're original compositions.
Right as most of the weight eased off her lungs, the music switched. Her eyes opened as the first haunting tone cut through her like a knife, harsh and painful. Her mouth fell open as the music continued to morph, growing darker and more sombre with every note.
It's still every bit as achingly beautiful as the rest of it, but it's also much more honest - rawer. As if the one playing was pressing on every tender key straight from their heart. They are baring their most vulnerable parts to the world. Her fingers curled around, nails digging into her palms. It took her every bit of remaining strength not to follow the music. She hardly paid attention to the bite of the wind and air on her shivering body, deeply in a trance and could only listen to the music.
The music was undoubtedly new to her ears, yet listening to it was the most familiar thing she had ever experienced. An inexplicable rush of emotions flooded her mind and body, rendering her speechless and hollow. It's a call of loneliness. It consisted of everything she had been feeling all this while. And the pure yearning - the intense longing for something and someone - tore straight through her heart. The desperation made it seem all too intimate, all too real.
It made Celina think of what she yearned for more than anything. A soulmate to court her.
Suddenly the music came to a stop. She deflated, her brows furrowing. From the corner of her eyes, she noticed the driver came from the room.
"Your majesty wants to see you right away." He croaked, his voice a mere tremble. "If you can, please follow me."
Celina swallowed the lump in her throat and followed the driver.
As soon as they stepped inside another room, she surveyed around. The crimson striped wallpaper covered all the walls, matching darker red curtains on the room's windows. All the drapes were halfway opened, only allowing the cabinet to be basked in sunlight. The polished wooden desk was particularly shining as it was placed by the window. There was a carpet set in the middle of the room, with two wooden armchairs and a small oval table.
Even the golden chandelier hanging from the ceiling had a touch of red.
But what drew her attention, though, was a grand piano in the middle of the room, enlightened by the rays of sunshine passing through the window. There was even a harpe near the piano and some more wooden furniture spread across the room.
Does that mean Prince's the one who played that melody? The knowledge shook her to the core. Slowly she shifted her attention to the person sitting on the armchair. Of course, its the Prince.
He was strikingly handsome, tall and broad, though his outfit was out of the ordinary. He's wearing a black velvet suit jacket over a black shirt and black trousers, the same colour shoes. It's far from what royals usually dressed. Most of them believed the colour to be worn only during funerals; another superstition was attached. Celina never bothered to understand it. She imagined that most royals wouldn't be able to let that one go.
This Prince was quite confident in his identity, which was admirable.
His face was beautiful too, all high cheekbones and strong jawline, eyes the pale green of a lily pad. He had his hair swept into a half-hearted quiff, curling around his milky pale face in an admittedly attractive way. There was no smile on those full lips, simply set in a straight line. At least now she knew for sure that the rumours about Prince being intimidating and scary had not been exaggerated.
The Prince stood up and towered over her ominously. He came in with an air of confidence yet didn't seem arrogant at all. There was even a small slump distinguishable in the line of his shoulders, but it couldn't be counted as a sign of weakness. No, his presence seemed to downright pull attention everywhere he went. But Celina could be a little biased since the man was undoubtedly the most attractive man she had ever seen.
"Ahh, the new maid", The Prince pointed out with a tilt of his head.
Celina found herself admiring the muscles, his bulging biceps that were noticeable through his shirt. She couldn't ignore the pull that was present in between them, but the young maid would continue to explain to her conscience that it was only because of the Prince's homelike scent.
She dumbly nodded her head in response to him.
They stood in silence, quietly regarding each other. Everything seemed so new, so fascinating —their two different worlds colliding with each other, a fact that both of them were entirely oblivious to.
"What's your name?" He asked, his voice rough and soothing at the same time.
A delicious shiver ran past her body. The heat spread across her abdomen as he bore his eyes into hers, raising his brow slightly. But what affected her the most was his scent. It was so far from the uncomfortable muskiness of the room and so achingly familiar that it left the eighteen-year-old reeling— thick vanilla woody smell engulfed her, making her lips part slightly.
"Celina, your majesty," She croaked, suddenly feeling her throat dry.
After a pause, her eyes caught the Prince again. He looked reluctantly confident—like he wanted to reach out and touch her, but something was stopping him. The genuine confusion on his face caused her chest to painfully twinge.
"Hmm," The Prince crooned. "My people address me with authority, but my name is Javier DeRose."
Their eyes are locked; they're breathing the same air, bodies only a few inches away from one another. She basked in the heat rolling off the Prince, her own body being drawn towards the source of the warmth.
Prince Javier. She rolled off those words, tasting them in between her lips. The moment didn't feel real under the sunlight, but luckily it was.
"Are you afraid of me, Celina?" The Prince asked huskily, and she shivered at the intense look in his eyes. Celina didn't answer, making him take a step forward in her direction.
He reached over and ran his thumb across her cheekbones, watching her breathing pause as she dared not move beneath the touch of this strange, imposing man. That was enough to snap her back into reality as she watched the Prince swallow the lump in his throat.
"Well, you should be."
She managed to dumbly nod her head, refusing to move much as she didn't know how the Prince would react. Her entire body froze, her ear tingling as Celina heard the floorboards creaking. Javier standing in front of her, closed his half-open mouth, hearing the stirring as well. Something inside him shifted as he suddenly took a step back, clearing his throat.
He pointed towards the driver standing behind her, whom she almost forgot about him, beckoning him closer. How could she erase a person standing in the same room as them?
She took a few more frantic step backwards, feeling colder the farther away the Prince moved from her. How humiliating!
"Alfred here will take you to Beth." The Prince sucked a sharp breath turning on his heel before continuing. "Beth will assign you to your duties."
Her eyebrows were furrowed, confused; she's wringing her hands, nervous the entire time. The tranquillity of the whole place was broken as her heart rate rose. As time passed, the reality of the situation began to sink in.
"O-Okay, your majesty" She swallowed thickly, her eyes flicking softly from hands to his face.
"That will be all. You can leave now."
He dismissed them after that. Celina was unable to listen to the driver or pay attention as they exited the room. She kept looking over her shoulder to the Prince perched in front of the grand piano. Her heart ached to go back.

When Celina reached the kitchen, she noticed Beth waiting for her. The woman stood by the french window, dressed in a long pale blue gown, white gloves pulled to the wrists and an apron. Her grey hair was pulled in a tight bun, and she had a stern expression on her face. Something about the way she kept quiet for the first few seconds, merely narrowing her eyes at Celina made her shiver.
“First I want you to step closer” The Prince commanded, his voice sultry and barely a whisper. A shiver ran down the maid’s spine, toes curling around the harsh surface of the room.
The air around the castle was shimmering. It’s a delicate, almost invisible kind of thing. Stepping out of her room and in the living room, Celina noticed a fire in the hearth, larger than the one her family built before going out into the snow every morning. Then again, they lived in a cottage.
The maid almost jumped out of her skin, looking over her shoulder at the intruder. As soon as she spotted Prince Javier idly leaning against the wall with a smirk, she deflated. Still, her heart thudded against her chest, willing her to breathe through her mouth for a few seconds. "Your Highness" She greeted a little too late, her hand fisted by her sides. Despite her rude behaviour, i.e. ignoring the royal standing in front of her; Javier didn't seem bothered. He seemed to gawk at her through those eyes, a flash of brightness cutting through the night. The Prince turned to the railing and then looked up, before slowly turning back to Celina
Despite her curiosity, Celina managed to avoid going out onto the balcony during the night for the entire week. The maid didn't go out there during the day either, thinking that the remnants of that distress and vulnerability will cling to her the moment she set her foot in. The Prince did walk away from her without any explanation and that stung. More than she thought. As if that wasn't enough the Prince went away. For a while it seemed judging from Beths somber expression and lack of interest in ordering around. No one knew where but only that he would be returning after few days. The housekeeper kept staring at the door, barely acknowledging others around her. Maybe she's missing the Prince more than she thought.
While Celina started trudging towards the kitchen, to attend her morning duties, all the noises stopped, and everything went quiet. A strange stillness encompassed all at once, blanketed the hallway: no crickets chirping, no katydids singing, no nothing. Usually, the young woman didn't mind the silence, immensely enjoyed the solitude. She had always favoured being by herself with a book and no one in sight to disturb her but not this time. This time, the maid knew it meant something else. Something different and strange. Unable to stop herself, she let her feet carry towards the open door that lead to the cave. Nothing was visible from the spot she stood, which clenched her stomach painfully.
"You're so gorgeous," The Prince said breathlessly, his eyes raking over her body. She squirmed at the attention, shyly lifting her head as he beckoned her closer. "Come closer to me." Javier pressed a hot kiss to her mouth without hesitation and scraped his large fingers across the back of her neck. It is almost too rough, but the desperation crawled through him into her. Celina didn't mind at all that's why she bought her hands up to clutch at the vast expanse of his shoulders. It's cold outside, but the Prince was warm, his other hand cupping her neck, fingers curling into her hair and gently tilting the maids head up, coaxing a whimper from the back of Celina's throat. She gripped helplessly at Javier's shoulders,
Celina felt cold and miserable, the dangerous shortening of her temper that might get the maid into trouble. From the minute she had that dream, the maid found it challenging to pay attention to what she's doing or saying. There was a deep-rooted fear that she might also be getting snappy as the days went on, and that's never good for her work. Somehow Celina managed to convince Beth that she needed to shop for personal items. No further questions were asked. The maid could no longer pretend that the secrets and silence weren't affecting her anymore. She felt like they were hiding something from her, something huge, and it caused her stomach to twist with uneasiness. After all, she wasn't good with being kept in the dark. That's why her parents betrayal stung a lot.
•Few Years Later•The dragon lumbered toward the Captain, swinging its long tail behind it. Turning a full rotation of the pen before it sank on the ground, folding its wings and letting out a smoky sigh. Lisa, a newbie who sat atop, gripped on the belly strap far too tight, lips still quivering as they landed."Ease the grip next time, Lisa", Celina mused, her hand stroking the bulge of her belly while staring at the poor dragon. It must be uncomfortable for the creature to endure that for more than an hour.Lisa blushed, shakily getting on her feet. "Yes, Captain"Someone cleared their throat from behind, the familiar sound making her smile.
As Celina stepped out of the bath room, fully dressed after a long hot shower, she noticed it's not raining. Despite that, the clouds were hanging low, and it's still dark and bitingly cold. With a sigh, she still zipped up her jacket and wandered out of the room.On her way to the kitchen, there was something buzzing and whirring in her ears.Beth was the first one to greet her in a cable knit sweater that screamed the eighties and a cup of steaming tea. The young woman's lips curved in a warm smile, sinking into the nearby chair."I'm sorry for yesterday."The housekeeper tutted her lips, waving. "I am
/Javiers POV/The Prince didn't know what woke him up. But suddenly, he's sitting up in bed, the sheets sliding off his chest along with Celina's arm around him. It's still dark out, no light shining in from outside, no ray of sun that might've alerted him. The window was still wide open, a thin layer of snow now covering the ground right in front of the Castle. The snowstorm has finally stopped, leaving behind the chilly air.Javier, without making any noise, slipped out from beneath the duvet and stood on his feet, his mind wiped blank. The Prince's steps were steady but languid as he made his way towards the window. Looking behind, he cannot believe that the dragon rider was in his bed. Finally, he thought to hi
"Thank you", Celina had to say out those words, a sigh escaping her lips. It got overwhelming for her—their stares, those questions and everything in general. The dragon rider had to get out of there, breathe without feeling her lungs burn. Only that if she walked away, it would appear rude."Anything for you, my love", He whispered, gazing into her eyes. The moment they stepped inside the warmth of his room, Celina could feel the air go thick and heavy, sizzle with something she's become far too familiar with. His icy, solid body pressed to her the next moment, his arms encircling and clutching her tight. She sagged back, her legs moments from giving out if not for Javier pressing her against the solid wood
Celina stared as Leader Keith's headless body laid in front of them, lifeless and in the pool of blood. She felt no remorse whatsoever. It was as if the rider was numb to sensation. Barton and Matt were also lying next to him.Motioning the dragon, she slid off him, standing on her feet. Celina turned around and gazed into the glimmering gold of his eyes, her hand reaching out to his maw. Javier preened under her touch, leaning forward and almost making the rider stumble. A giggle escaped her lips. She missed it.Lightly scratching at the scales, Celina stared at him. "You did good today. Shift back now."Javier made a sound, his wings flapping together, the sudden rush of heavy breeze almost making h
The little girl in pigtails perched on one of the towers, her legs crossed together. Celina was merely six years old when she learned that her father trained dragons. It was fascinating, igniting curiosity in her; that's why she followed him.Her mother would have forbidden her, but Celina skillfully sneaked away. Sitting by the railing, she got to watch the entire scene unfold in front of her eyes. It was breathtaking, watching as the dragons soared in formation across the sky, performing elaborate manoeuvres, shooting at targets both grounded and airborne with their claws or fire darting out of their mouth.Celina's eyes widened, watching as the dragons, as mighty as they stood, leaned in front of her father. One of them let her father stroke the maw, eyes rolling back. What was happening? How could her father not fear for
Her lips parted in shock, a puff of white cloud forcing out of her mouth in the process. That voice. It sounded so familiar. Javier? Her inner voice rushed out, panic seizing her by the throat and squeezing her eyes until pain blossomed behind those lids. What if it's all part of her imagination? She refused to turn and meet her death in some underground alley where no one could find a trace of her."Celina, it's me."The sound echoed in her ears. She still stayed in the fragile position, fingers trembling as the maid fisted the fabric of her coat. Her nose brushed against the soft skin of her palm as she tried to cover her face. Why couldn't the voice stop taunting her? Celina didn't need a reminder that Javier was not miles away from her and proba
Celina lied on her back and stared at the ceiling, breath shallow, trying not to move. The room was dark, woods completely burned out, leaving nothing but ashes and the distinct smell behind. She blinked a few times, eyes bleary and adjusting to the lack of light, slightly disoriented for a moment or two. Last night was real. The more she thought about it, the more breathlessness Celina experienced. She behaved like an oblivious fool all this time, doubting Javier when he's been trying to help her. Her body felt numb as she recalled the broken expression on his face, the defeated look as he watched her leave. The young woman knew he tried to stop her from leaving. She saw his reflection in the mirror of the car but remained motionless. Heartlessly Celin
Instead of turning away from the door and walking back to her room, Celina stayed behind. She knew it was wrong. The young woman couldn't forget the look that crossed Abels face when she told him about the pill. What was that all about? Huddling in the corner as not to be seen, Celina crouched behind the wall. The door was slightly ajar, all thanks to Abel slamming it with much force than necessary. Before leaning down, her eyes flitted across the surrounding just to make sure she's all alone. Releasing a sigh of breath upon finding no one in miles of long hallway, Celina diverted her attention back to Abel. Her eyes widened when she noticed a scowl on Leader Keith's face. Then the voices came. "What did you give her?"
