CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

"Oh Lord, I know we've been away from you." Michal clasped her hands together in a prayer arrangement.
"Forgive me, forgive us. My sis is hurting and I can't bear to see Mirabella in pains, it hurts me." She felt a sharp pain in her chest. "Its hurting."
"Please God... She's really weak and I'm not sure if she can still hold on a little more but God if she'll leave us, make the rest of her days here painless, grant her peace. I know you can hear me and you are listening to these prayers please God.." She opened her eyes, Maybe she shouldn't be making such prayers, she was really confused she closed her eyes again and continued when her phone rang out loudly.

Things have gotten worse, the surgery was not successful but Catherine didn't tell her daughter about it.She knew she would break down and she wasn't ready to see her two daughters dejected. "Ruth why are you being so unfair?" Hammed asked, his eyes showing disgust."Lover boy, what have I done again?" She looked at him and shrugged her shoulders, it was clear she didn't care about whatever he wanted to say. She knew the conversation would revolve around Michal and she wasn't interested in matters that concerned her."You know Mirabella is sick, don't you?" He looked at her."Who's Mirabella?" She deadpanned, then turned to him like she just remembered something. "You mean Michal's sister?" She asked shaking her head vigorously vibing to the song that played on her earphones."I'm surprised." He scoffed. "You don't know who Mirabella is?" The day was dark, rain droplets fell from the sky and the weather was the perfect definition of parky.Silence filled the room where Mirabella was lying on the bed, her mom had gone home to cook for them and Michal went outside for a short time sightseeing.She was in the midst of many people she had never seen, they were singing beautifully and she joined them to sing, they wore long white robes that flowed on the ground, they were all beautiful and had a smile plastered to their faces.Suddenly, a man in white carried her up and smiled lovingly at her, he different from the other people she sang with. "Mom." She whined like a lost puppy, she was glad her mom came in at the right timeBad timing for Hammed though.Jerry followed her in and she scrunched her nose at the sight of him."You took so long." Michal said to her."I got a call from work, I'm sorry." Hammed stood up for her to sit but Michal told him to sit back, she stood up and let her mom sit.Jerry said nothing, he watched them with his hands dipped in his trouser's pocket."Uncle Jerry, come have a seat." Hammed stood for him to sit, he thanked him and sat down."How long have you been here?" Catherine asked Jerry, she knew Michal would have treated him harshly if he had been there for long."Almost an hour, Mira has been sleeping so I decided to wait for you. How are you?" Hammed smiled, Jerry was such a gentleman and he still saw no reason why Michal should detest him.

Exactly a week after she went to church to pray,Mirabella was smiling on the hospital bed where she laid, been a while she smiled gaily. Michal sat close to her and she wondered why she was smiling like that."Mira, why are you smiling?" She asked, her face plastered with smiles too."Cos I'm happy." She said, even her voice was more audible and she glowed different."I need a favour from you Michal.""What's that? I will do anything." She would do anything to make her get better."I want you to go home and prepare my favorite meal please, I want to eat and I want you to prepare the food.""Wow! You want to eat? Wow! Sure, I will go right away." She squealed and stood up immediately. "Where is mom?" She asked."I don't know." She replied, Catherine walked into the room and saw her sick daughter smiling, it was a good sign she thought.

Hammed and Lekky stepped inside, with Mrs Donalds behind them.They met and her mother in a sober mood, Mirabella's body was still lying on the bed."Senior Michal, what's wrong?" Lekky rushed to where Michal was kneeling on the ground, her eyes were soaked with tears."Mira..." She pointed at Mirabella's lifeless body on the bed, she couldn't the say the words. It was hurtful.Hammed went closer and Mrs Donalds held Catherine."What happened to Mirabella?" Hammed asked, Lekky was already getting impatient."Mira." Michal resumed back to school after Mirabella's burial, it was two months already but the memories of her was still fresh in her heart.She couldn't stay back at home and continue brooding, she was hurt but there was nothing she could do to bring her sister back to life.She accepted it was her fate.She had written the exams she missed the last term during the holidays, a makeup exam was conducted for her. She wrote the papers in a dismayed state but she managed to pass all.She was now in S.s.3(three) with her other classmates, Hammed made sure he was always there for her. He fulfilled his promise of staying with her always.Michal hated the pity faces she got from the teachers and students anytime she was in school. And she wished they'd stop talking about Mirabella.She went to Lekky's new class during break and saw her staring at an empty seat that was next to hers.

Michal was trying so hard to rehearse with her crew members, they had a performance the next day."We're making progress." The following week after the concert was Mirabella's birthday.Lekky, Hammed, Michal, Catherine and Jerry stood in front of Mirabella's tomb.Its been eight years already, Michal and her mother always made sure they visited the tomb twice every year. The hall was so large, chandeliers scattered across various sides, the chandeliers beamed with lights of different colors.It was an award night for all the big and popular artists in the country.She was there standing on the stage with a mike in her hand, she wore a gray gown made from silk, it hugged her curves and stopped at her knees, her braids fell beyond her shoulders making her look so elegant.She balanced on the stilettos that fitted her legs perfectly and her face was plastered with smiles, she was happy she just won an award for the best music artist in the Star Awards.She lifted the award that was carved in a glass up and beamed with satisfaction, she worked hard to get there."Good day everyone." Michal finally graduated from the uni as the best in the department of biochemistry, it wasn't a dream come true but she was glad she was able to barge a degree in the uni.Uni stress was gone, Jerry and her mother attended her convocation and they were so proud of her.Uni was stressful, she met with a lot of people that triggered her love for music, she started doing it on a low key.She was still in touch with Hammed, there were times he'd call her just to complain about the whites to her, she'd laugh it and tell him to mind his own business there.Catherine got pregnant a year after her wedding with Jerry but lost the baby to miscarriage, the doctor told her she was weak to carry a child and that she had zero chances of giving birth later in the future.She'd feared Jerry would leave her, but he loved her more than that he stood with her and never bothered her about having a child.
