Chloe Madden

I nodded along as my father unleashed his fury at my boss, feeling a knot of frustration tightening in my chest. It was like being caught in the crossfire of a storm, helpless to do anything.

“How could someone do this to my daughter in a fucking police station? Is this a joke? How could you let this happen?” My father's voice thundered, his anger palpable in the air. I bit my lip, resisting the urge to speak out, knowing it would only further enrage him.

"Sorry Commissioner Madden, but you know him—" My boss attempted to explain, but my father cut him off with a vehement retort.

"No, that man came in here and put his hands on my daughter. How dare he do that?" My father bellowed, his face contorted with rage. I fought the urge to roll my eyes. He was more concerned with his wounded pride than my safety.

“How could you send Chloe in? She is the weak one. You thought she could stand up to a man like Carter?” My dad's accusation stung, though I remained silent, knowing it was futile to defend myself in the face of his anger.

“Dad, Chloe handled herself well. You don’t need to pull her down just because you are angry,” Jessica intervened, her voice stern and unwavering. I shot her a grateful look as she changed the subject, "Now what’s done is done. Can we talk about what we have to do next?” Jessica suggested, her voice calm and pragmatic, a stark contrast to our father's heated anger.

“Jessica, they should have sent you in. Sending Chloe was a huge mistake,” my dad stated, giving me a dirty look that sent a pang of guilt coursing through me. I couldn't even argue with him. He was right.

My heart sank as I acknowledged the truth in his words. Despite my best efforts to prove myself, I couldn't escape the fact that I was ill-equipped to handle a situation like the one with Carter Gray.

It did scare and intimidate me.

"So we know why he did it. We did cross a line, dad. We shouldn’t have arrested the barely legal children and their wives," Jessica reasoned, attempting to inject some logic into the conversation.

But my father remained stubborn, his arrogance evident, "I have to play dirty. When I did, see how he came out of his hiding. I was right," he declared, his tone dripping with self-righteousness.

"He said they weren’t just arrested. They were physically assaulted. That’s wrong," I finally spoke up, unable to hold my tongue any longer. My father's reaction was immediate and vicious.

"How fucking dare you? You speak up now?" He roared, his anger directed squarely at me. I braced myself for the onslaught of his fury, knowing that logic and reason held little sway over his emotions.

But Jessica stepped in, her voice calm and steady. "Dad, she's right. Most of the wives and kids weren’t even aware of what their husbands did. We shouldn’t have dragged them into this. They are innocent people."

My father's response was dismissive, "Please, they know what they are doing. They deserved it. We are the good people," he declared, his words leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

Growing up, I never quite got along with my father. While my sister chose to overlook his flaws and absorb his wisdom, I couldn't stand him.

Jessica was always practical and detached, while I tended to be more emotional. At times, I found myself agreeing with my father's assessments, and it only reinforced the notion that I wasn't cut out to be a detective.

“We should kill him in an encounter, he took it too far,” my father declared to my boss, who looked bewildered and apprehensive. It was clear that no one was crazy enough to go after someone like Carter Gray.

“Dad, he is going to come after our family now. He threatened Chloe. You know he wouldn’t hesitate to kill Mom, Chloe, or me if we push him again. Let's lay low and come up with a plan to catch him,” Jessica suggested as I fidgeted with fingers, knowing no one really cared about my opinion.

“Sir, we barely have any evidence on him. He has the best lawyers backing him. Even if we arrest him, like today, he will get bail very easily,” my captain interjected, trying to inject some sense into the conversation.

“And if you kill him in an encounter, they will all come after you. He is like a son to the Lancasters. You know that, right?” Jessica added.

“Fine, then gather a team and arrest him. I need to see Carter Gray in prison. Then I will go after the Lancasters,” my father declared, his ambition blinding him to the dangers ahead.

It was my father’s dream to make a name for himself, to be known as the man who cleaned the streets and rid the city of crime. But sometimes, I couldn't shake the feeling that he had become so obsessed with his mission that he has become what he hates.

“Dad, I’ll assemble a team and present a plan to you soon,” Jessica said as our father gestured for us to leave his office.

As we walked out, my sister pulled me aside, ushering me into an empty interrogation room with a teasing smile on her face.

“Okay, what the hell actually happened?” she asked as she perched herself on the table, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

Jessica had fiery red hair tied up in a bun, framing her beautiful face with its high cheekbones and piercing green eyes. She stood tall and slender in her sergeant uniform, her frame conveying both grace and strength. Though slim, she looked powerful and strong.

I feigned innocence, pretending not to understand, “Whaaaaaaaat? What- what… that’s nuts. I cannot even-“ I replied, trying to play it cool.

“Since the second we entered our father’s office, you’ve been discouraging anyone who wants to see the CCTV footage,” she pointed out, her smile widening.

I sighed, realizing I couldn't keep up the act any longer. “Okay, fine,” I confessed. “You know how everyone is saying he threatened me? Well, it might kind of look like he's... seducing me.”

My sister's eyes widened in disbelief. “What the fuck?” she gasped, clearly taken aback.

“And it might also look like his seduction was working,” I admitted sheepishly, feeling a flush of embarrassment creeping up my neck.

“That is insane!” she exclaimed, “I've heard he's incredibly handsome, but I didn’t think he could seduce a police officer,” she mused, her expression a mix of shock and amusement.

I couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. “I feel so ashamed,” I confessed, rubbing my face in embarrassment.

"Don't worry," she comforted me, her voice soft. "I've heard he's incredibly charming, and it's easy to underestimate the danger when you're in his presence. He's exceptionally cunning and smooth. It's hard not to fall into his trap." Her explanation elicited a faint smile from me, I was happy that she understood the situation and didn’t blame me.

“Yes, he is exactly like that. Thank you for understanding,” I replied gratefully. “I don’t know what it was about him. He was scary intimidating, but there was this dark charm. I didn’t know what to do,” I admitted, sinking into a chair with a sigh of relief.

“Well, you should consider yourself lucky that I'm assigned to this case. I'll make sure Dad doesn’t find out. But you have to be careful. You can’t let that man seduce you again, okay? Please stay away from him. I will manage everything.” she warned, her smile turning serious as she looked at me with concern.

I nodded, grateful for her understanding and support. "Okay," I agreed, determined to keep my distance from Carter Gray, no matter how alluring he may seem.

Chloe MaddenI sat in the corner of the office, holding my head in my lap as I tried to calm my racing thoughts. My sister wasn’t answering my calls even though I sent her a thousand messages about how my father had just arrested Asher Lancaster’s girlfriend, Zara, on a trumped-up charge.Zara's words spilled out in a flurry of nervous energy, her tone a mix of confusion and frustration. "I never did anything wrong," she protested, her voice rising slightly. "Is this about the dead rat I hid under Heather C’s car seat? It stank up so bad that she had to get rid of her car. But she bullied me throughout middle school, so I think I didn’t do anything bad. I just got even. This happened ten years ago!"As Zara continued to speculate about the reasons for her arrest, I couldn't help but shake my head at her obliviousness. This girl truly had a knack for incriminating herself without even realizing it. With a subtle gesture, I pressed a finger to my lips, silently urging her to stop talk

Chloe MaddenI haven’t seen Carter in a month. He was right; the second I told everyone about the "attack," I was given police security. My mom and sister kept visiting me at my house. They were traumatised that I had to go through something so traumatic. I felt extremely guilty as they were so concerned about my mental health and ‘what I went through’. But all I could think of was Carter. That was all I thought about. Everyday.I hated myself for it.The chief of police decided to drop the case due to lack of evidence. I was certain I would never see him again. My father, after returning from his suspension, was ordered to drop his investigations into the mafia family "for now," which enraged him. He was mad at me and hadn’t spoken to me since the incident, saying I should have shot Carter dead when I had the chance. Other than that, he has been ignoring my presence, so nothing out of the ordinary.Life had settled into an uncomfortable routine. I went to work, came home, and deal

One Year LaterChloe MaddenThe peaceful lull that had settled over the city was shattered in an instant. Violent crimes reports every five minutes of kidnapping, murders and rape had filled the station. My chest fell to the ground as I helped an elderly couple file a report for their missing daughter. With the thousands of reports filled today, we knew something was amiss. Nothing seemed to add up. But as my team and I went through the descriptions there was one thing that was evidently clear. This had nothing to do with the Lancasters. As the dust settled, a chilling message spread like wildfire: a new mob was in town. The patterns of havoc and crime were very similar to Frank Barlow, a sixty-year-old madman who ruled over two of our neighbouring countries with an iron fist, had set his sights on this country. His reputation was one of unparalleled brutality and ambition. The name alone sent creeps down the spines of those who dared to not worship him.The police were at a loss. The

Chloe Madden The decision to seek help from the Lancasters was not without its controversy. Commissioner Madden, my father, was vehemently opposed. His pride and sense of justice refused to bend, even in the face of such overwhelming danger. To my surprise, the chief of police didn’t call the entire precinct to the conference. It was just a few people, and for a moment, I worried that Greg had revealed I was the one who provided Carter's number. But I knew he was not a snitch.I breathed in deeply before entering the office, my heartbeat increasing when I saw my sister, the lieutenant, my father, Greg, and the chief already present in the room.“Okay, everyone is here, and I am happy that Carter’s reply came swiftly, but it isn’t what anyone expected. So I am just going to read it out,” the chief said as I walked around the room to stand next to my sister.“The letter reads as follows:‘To the Chief of Police,I am deeply hurt by the actions taken against me and my associates. Chloe MaddenAt exactly 8 p.m., I stood outside the imposing building that housed Carter’s office. The city’s lights reflected off the sleek glass facade, casting an almost eerie glow. Taking one last deep breath, I entered, ready to confront the dangerous and alluring man who held our city’s fate in his hands.I had gotten dressed at the precinct, where they had brought the dress and a makeup artist named Cindy. My lieutenant told me that Carter might be a little attracted to me and we needed to play that angle to our advantage. I wasn’t very comfortable with this because I always felt like he knew I was attracted to him, which is why he would flirt with me to use me. Deep down, I knew he didn’t really like me; he was just someone who enjoyed playing games and making people blush. The deep, crimson red dress hugged my curves in all the right places. The fabric was smooth and luxurious, flowing down with a subtle slit on one side. The neckline was tasteful yet alluring, showing just

Chloe Madden I was about to exit my room when a big burly hand appeared in front of me, I looked up to see the bodyguard who stopped me. "And who might you be?" I asked, feigning an air of sophisticated curiosity. He looked down at me with a stony expression. "Carter appointed me to stand here because he has a very important meeting and he can't have you jeopardizing it."I laughed, dramatically slapping a hand to my forehead. "Oh, the drama! The intrigue! The audacity!" I pretended to re-enter my room, but the moment he looked away, I ducked and darted under his arm, sprinting down the hallway like a caffeinated squirrel.I ran through the labyrinthine corridors of Carter's mansion, my ears straining for any sound of conversation. After a few wrong turns and a brief detour through a linen closet, I finally heard voices. Chloe MaddenI showered, letting the hot water soothe my aching muscles. The night had been sleepless, my mind unable to quiet down despite my exhaustion. My life was a mess, and the reality of it kept me wide awake. As I scrubbed myself clean, I found some solace in the simplicity of the task. The shower had a cabinet stocked with unused brushes, soaps, and other essentials. I brushed my teeth, feeling slightly more human, but as I dried off, I realized I had no clothes.Wrapping a towel around myself, I opened the door to my room and yelled, “Carter!”I was too tired to pretend to be composed. I heard heavy footsteps approaching, and soon enough, Carter appeared, his expression a mix of worry and irritation. “What do I wear?” I asked in a sing-song voice as I fake smiled at him making him roll his eyes.“Are you going to be annoying now because you’re mad at me?” he asked as he walked into the room, heading straight for the wardrobe. Chloe MaddenFor the first time in weeks, I was going to sleep peacefully. The day had started so chaotically and, because of Carter, had been emotionally exhausting. But the chief was so happy when we showed up with his grandson that he nearly collapsed with relief. He hugged his grandson tightly, tears streaming down his usually stoic face as he whispered words of comfort into his grandson’s ear. "Thank you, thank you," he repeated, his gratitude directed toward Carter.Carter stood off to the side, his usual air of cool detachment replaced with a rare softness. He met the chief’s eyes, giving a slight nod. “Just doing what needed to be done. You don’t need to thank me for this,” he said, his voice uncharacteristically humble. The atmosphere in the room was heavy as the boy’s parents held him and cried. Officers exchanged smiles and nods of approval, and for a moment, the grim realities of their job faded into the background. As I prepared my chamomile tea and opened my pretty worn

Chloe MaddenAs dawn broke over the city, I received an urgent call from the Chief of Police as I was getting dressed for work at 7 am. His voice was tense, a rare crack in his usually stoic demeanor. “Chloe, it’s Frank. He’s kidnapped my grandson. A ten-year-old boy! We need Carter’s help. Please, I will owe you my life. Go talk to him and please make him save my grandson.”“Yes sir. I’ll leave right now and call you as soon as I speak to Carter. I know this is difficult, but please stay calm. I will do everything in my power to make things right,” I told him, frantically grabbing my things and keys, heading out of my home to go to Carter’s house.I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. Frank Barlow had crossed an unforgivable line. Kidnapping a child was beyond heinous. Arriving at his front door, I knocked urgently until one of his men opened the door. Thankfully, he recognized me and led me inside to the dining room where Carter was sitting, having breakfast.Carter narrowed his e

Chloe MaddenThe morning after our undercover mission, I was still reeling from my conversation with Carter. As I went through my daily routine, my mind kept drifting back to his words. My face scrunched up as I overheard two cops casually discussing a dead hooker’s decapitated body over their morning coffee. The gruesome details made me feel nauseous as I walked past them."Why do you look like you saw a ghost?" Nicola asked as I made an omelette for Carter. I hated the extra work Carter demanded just because he was helping us with Frank Barlow. It seemed he found some twisted thrill in making me his personal servant."The murder-kidnapping crime talk is something I could do without first thing in the morning," I said, preparing a plate and setting the coffee pot on."Really? I was just in a meeting where we were discussing the double homicide of a mother and her six-year-old—" Nicola began, her tone matter-of-fact."No! Stop! Chloe MaddenThe drive to the brunch venue was quiet. Carter glanced at me occasionally, but I kept my eyes fixed on the passing scenery, my mind racing with thoughts of the upcoming mission. Going undercover with him was daunting, but I had to focus on the task at hand.We arrived at the upscale hotel where the brunch was being held, a place I had only heard of but could never afford. Carter parked the car and turned to me, his expression serious. "Remember, we're a couple. Act natural, follow my lead, and we'll be fine."“Do we have to be a couple?” I asked nervously as he got out of the car and opened my door for me. I took his hand as he helped me out, trying to ignore how my heart raced at his touch. I didn’t want to act like his girlfriend; I already had a thing for him, and playing make-believe was only going to hurt my feelings.“Well, why would a man bring a woman to such a place if he’s not dating her?” he asked, his voice low and teasing. “Also, with that dress you’re weari

Chloe MaddenAs the morning sun streamed through the precinct's windows, the conference room filled with the murmur of voices. The air was thick with tension as officers and detectives gathered to discuss the pressing issue of Frank Barlow. I noticed several female officers sneaking glances at Carter and blushing; honestly, I couldn’t blame them. He was an impossible distraction.I took my seat next to him, trying to maintain a professional demeanor, but my mind kept drifting to Carter Gray. His intoxicating scent and commanding presence were constant distractions. The commissioner, my father, opened the meeting. "We need to come up with a solid plan to take down Frank Barlow. His operations are getting bolder, and we can't afford any more slip-ups. We have Carter here to help us out, and hopefully, we keep him busy enough to slow down his criminal spree."Carter leaned back in his chair, his eyes glinting with amusement. Chloe Madden I fidgeted with my hands as I arrived at the precinct an hour early, ready to report everything that happened last night. I swallowed hard as I walked into the conference room where my chief of police, a few trusted officers, my father, and my sister were already waiting.Taking a seat, I felt their eyes fixed on me. "He found the wire," I said, fishing it out of my bag and placing it on the table. The horror on their faces was unmistakable. We all knew Carter's reputation for dealing with those who tried such tricks—he had no tolerance for it."I'm sorry, Detective Madden. We should never have put your life in danger like that. What did he do to you?" the chief asked hesitantly, regret and fright visible on his face."Nothing," I replied, trying to sound convincing. "He was very disappointed, but he said we are doing this for the good of the city. It's a peace treaty between the mafia and the police, so he's willing to give it a second chance." This was a dangerous game, one where the stakes were high, and yet I couldn’t afford to walk away now. I swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his gaze on me as I slowly removed my coat, letting it slip from my shoulders and drop to the floor. His eyes never left mine, and I could see the satisfaction in his smirk as I walked back toward him. Carter's hands rested on my waist, guiding me onto his lap. As I settled onto him, the heat of his body against mine was both unnerving and thrilling. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me closer until our faces were just inches apart.
