Chapter 69

Author: Sophie Herway
Kaylee lifted her hands and draped the tie around William’s neck. “A Windsor knot okay?”

“Sure.”

William nodded.

Kaylee was skilled at tying ties, and within moments, she had knotted a perfect Windsor.

William straightened slightly and glanced at his reflection in the mirror by the closet door. “Looks good. Did you used to do this for Alex?”

“No.” Kaylee answered honestly. “He asked me to at first, but I wasn’t very good at it. I’d always mess it up. Even after I practiced on my own, he never asked me again.”

William’s lips curved slightly, and he said with a rare seriousness, “I’m not very good at tying ties myself. Would you mind helping me from now on?”

“Of course.”

Kaylee agreed without hesitation, completely missing the underlying meaning behind the question.

Once they were both ready, they left the apartment and headed for the underground parking garage.

The heels Kaylee wore with her dress were a gift from Wendy—a stunning pair, but higher than what

The men were dressed in impeccably tailored suits, while the women were adorned in elegant evening gowns. Everyone carried themselves with effortless confidence. As they neared the banquet hall, Kaylee felt her nerves creeping in. Apart from her, everyone here was either wealthy or powerful. She couldn't help it—her grip on William’s arm tightened slightly. Sensing her unease, William gently covered her hand with his own. His voice was warm and steady. "Don’t worry. No matter what happens, I’m here. Trust me." His words carried a quiet strength, momentarily easing her nerves. When they finally reached the entrance of the banquet hall, William gave her hand another reassuring pat. “No one here would dare disrespect me. You’re my girlfriend—whatever you say, whatever you do, they’ll only applaud you for it.” Every word was spoken with unwavering certainty, laced with something so gentle, so indulgent, that Kaylee's heart seemed to skip a beat. She thought

Susanne’s gaze landed on Kaylee’s face, her expression shifting from surprise to something much less pleasant. She walked over, struggling to even muster a polite smile. Forcing herself to speak, she said stiffly, “Kaylee, Alex told me you couldn’t make it tonight because of work. I wasn’t expecting to see you here.” Before Kaylee could say a word, William spoke first. “I insisted she come with me. If you have a problem with it, blame me.” His tone was calm, unwavering. But the way he spoke—stepping in to shield Kaylee without hesitation—made it clear where he stood. William rarely returned to the Morgan family’s social gatherings. In most public settings, he was surrounded by people but always remained distant, never showing preference toward anyone. Yet now, his attitude toward Kaylee was different. Even with just a few words, it was obvious. At the very least… It was a stark contrast to how Alex had treated her. “I was just curious, that’s all.” Susa

Kaylee walked slowly, and as she moved away, she overheard the two CEOs behind her asking William a question. "Mr. Morgan, who was that lady just now?" William replied, "That’s my girlfriend." Another asked, “Which family did she come from?” William responded smoothly, "I’m dating a girlfriend, not making a business deal." His answer was both clever and considerate—acknowledging their relationship without diminishing her in any way. Kaylee stepped out of the banquet hall and found a quiet corner in the hallway where she sank into a sofa. She had been by William’s side for less than half an hour. Yet in that short time, she had gained an even clearer understanding of his status, influence, and social finesse. And of the vast gap between them. The banquet hall was only a few meters away. But the distance between her and William felt like an insurmountable divide. It was no wonder so many people were curious about her background. The person standing

"You f**king bitch! You dare kick me there? Just wait—if I ever see you again, I’ll have my men gang—" Marcus was hunched over in pain, but even that didn’t stop him from spewing filth. At that moment, he had already made up his mind. Even if he couldn’t get to her right now, he would go straight to Honor Medical Center and find her there. He had already looked into her background. Kaylee’s biggest ties to the Morgan family were Susanne and Alex. But now that Alex was engaged, even if he were to do something to her… The Morgans wouldn’t risk offending his mother just for their housekeeper’s daughter. Kaylee ignored his disgusting threats and quickly made her way to William’s side, grabbing his arm. "I’m fine. Let’s go," she said, voice steady. William didn’t move. His dark eyes remained fixed on Marcus, just a few meters away. As a man, he knew exactly where Marcus had been hit. And he didn’t even need to ask to know who had done it. Or why.

Kaylee wasn’t sure how to handle the situation, so she instinctively looked at William. Marcus, thinking his apology wasn’t sincere enough, quickly added, “That slap was too light. I’ll do it myself!” Before anyone could stop him, he smacked himself across the face. Then again. The sharp *smack, smack* echoed through the hallway. Kaylee instinctively took a small step back. “That’s enough,” William finally spoke, his tone calm but cold. “Get lost. I’ll deal with your mother myself. You’re not even worth standing in front of me, let alone speaking to me.” Marcus went pale. He had done plenty of reckless things before, but his mom had always been able to clean up after him. But if she found out he had offended William… She’d probably skin him alive. “Mr. Morgan, please—” William didn’t even let him finish. He simply pulled out his phone and looked at Marcus with a single, unmistakable command. “Leave.” Marcus hesitated, opening his mouth to prote

From a few meters away, the music in the banquet hall changed, nearly drowning out William’s voice. Kaylee quickly stood up. “Is the engagement ceremony about to start? Let’s go in together.” William followed suit, rising to his feet. He subtly lifted his arm, silently offering her support. Kaylee hesitated for a moment but eventually placed her hand on his arm. She was still unsteady in heels, and the marble flooring was slick. If she tripped, embarrassing herself was one thing—but damaging the jewelry and watch she was wearing? That was something she definitely couldn’t afford. Inside the banquet hall, Alex and Lucy had already changed into their formal attire and were mingling with the guests. Under his father Harold’s guidance, Alex was being introduced to industry giants—people he normally wouldn’t even get the chance to meet. With every handshake, every new face, Alex felt more convinced that this engagement was the right decision. Across the room, Lucy

"If she were from a wealthy family, we’d know. A woman this stunning—I’d remember if I’d seen her before." It seemed like everyone was praising Kaylee, calling her flawless, beautiful. Alex watched from a distance as her slender arm remained looped around his uncle’s. The sight made his stomach twist. This should have been his…— After the brief engagement ceremony, waiters began serving the courses. Kaylee and William were seated at the head table with the senior members of both families. Alongside the Morgans, Lucy’s parents—Henry Kingston and Karen Luther—were also present. Karen, in particular, was seated right next to Kaylee. Once the dishes started arriving, Karen picked up a bottle of wine from the table. "This is Bordeaux wine,” she said, smiling. "We bought it the year Lucy was born. Would the ladies at the table like to share a glass?" Most of the women agreed. Finally, Karen turned to Kaylee. "Miss Lawson, would you like to try some?"

"Yeah… maybe a little…" Kaylee still felt somewhat clear-headed, but she could also tell her legs had gone weak. Her body felt light, and her head was spinning just enough to throw off her balance. Karen quickly reached out to steady her as well. "The alcohol content is low, but it does have a delayed effect. You’ll feel fine after sleeping it off." "Thanks for letting me know." William nodded politely, then turned to Kaylee. "Don’t worry. Lean on me—I’ll take you outside." At that moment, across the table, Alex finally noticed what was happening. Kaylee was obviously drunk. Her cheeks were flushed, her usually sharp eyes hazy with intoxication. She leaned into William’s support, delicate and weightless, like a willow swaying in the wind. In that moment, she had never looked more beautiful. His gaze flickered toward Lucy. The artificial sharpness of her plastic features suddenly felt glaringly obvious. His interest in her had long faded. But there wa

What a coincidence... The day before Lynn returned to the country, William had asked Kaylee to stay by his side as his girlfriend. The next day, he flew to South City.If Susanne wasn't lying, then Lynn had arrived in South City that very same day. Susanne sighed, "Your mother and I were very close back in the day. I truly want you to be happy. Unfortunately, I didn't raise my son well, and he hurt you. If you ever need anything, you can always come to me."Kaylee watched as Susanne left. William had arranged a car to pick her up—it was parked right outside the hospital. But instead of leaving, she found a shaded bench and sat down.Taking out her phone, she searched for "Lynn Watson" on social media. Soon, she found a barely noticeable news article—famous jewelry designer Lynn Watson had returned to the country. The accompanying photo, taken at the airport, was posted on Tuesday.Judging by the background, it was exactly the kind of commercial building that Dr. Henderson had m

"Susanne, I performed two surgeries overnight yesterday, standing for over ten hours. I'm really exhausted right now," Kaylee explained seriously. "My work keeps me incredibly busy—I really don't have the time or energy to think about these things.""Oh, no matter how busy you are, you can't neglect your lifelong happiness. This young man is truly outstanding—he's around your age, good-looking, academically excellent, and even studied abroad. I've heard he's never had a girlfriend before."As Susanne mentioned that last detail, her tone lifted slightly.Never had a girlfriend before. To Kaylee, that was a red flag—there was a good chance this guy simply didn’t like women. She had a friend in college who was tricked into a marriage like that. The man had an impeccable background—successful, attractive, and in his thirties, yet he'd never dated anyone before. At the time, her friend thought she had found the perfect husband, a blessing from the heavens.Only after marriage did she

In some remote mountainous areas, tents were still necessary, and taking a bath was even more challenging."It was his own request. He said that after so many years abroad, he wanted to start by applying what he had learned to small tasks within his ability."The director of the medical department spoke these words with obvious pride. Kaylee had yet to meet Mason, but she already had a good impression of him. After the director left, Kaylee changed her clothes, preparing to go off duty. As she passed through the outpatient hall, curiosity got the better of her. She went upstairs to check Lucy's examination results in the system.According to the doctor's report, the baby was indeed slightly larger than average, and a fetal heartbeat was already present. However, the size difference was not significant.Kaylee curiously asked, "For a gestational sac of this size, what is the normal gestational age?"The doctor replied, "It varies for each person. Normally, a fetal heartbeat appear

The scene from yesterday flashed through Kaylee's mind. Ignoring Lucy's gaze, she sincerely congratulated Alex, "Congratulations, Mr. Morgan.""Thank you.""I won't disturb you two any longer. I'll get back to work now." With a slight nod, Kaylee turned and left. She had been by Alex's side for twenty years, four of which she spent as his girlfriend. She had cared for him meticulously—staying up all night to bring down his fever when he was sick, changing his clothes and sheets when he drank too much and vomited all over his bed.Beyond the gratitude she owed to the Morgan family, she had genuine feelings for Alex as a person. And yet, she had watched him lie to her face time and time again. Now, he was engaged, and his fiancée was pregnant. The most ridiculous part? The child wasn't even his. She wondered if this counted as karma.Kaylee went to the cafeteria for lunch. When she took the elevator up to the sixth floor, she ran into Alex again. He was holding a stack of rec

"No need, I'll just stay in my room."Kaylee quickly interrupted him, breaking free from his embrace as she spoke.William didn’t stop her. Instead, he stood up with her and said, "Alright, I'll walk you to the door."Kaylee practically ran back to her room.In the bathroom, she removed her makeup meticulously. Even after washing her face, her reflection in the mirror showed her cheeks still burning as if she had a fever. The next day. That evening, after returning to North City, Kaylee realized William had not come home.Only then did she fully understand—he wasn't joking. He was truly giving her a week to decide. Two days later, while working a night shift, Kaylee wanted to review her meeting notes from a few days ago. Only then did she remember that she had left her notebook in Emma’s room while doing her makeup. After contacting Emma, they arranged for Kaylee to pick it up at the hospital after her shift.Since Emma was also working, they didn’t chat much. Kaylee's face burned so hotly it felt like she had a fever. She shook her head lightly. "No, Alex is just used to having me around to take care of him. I... I and he..."Before she could finish,William suddenly sat up, placing a firm hand under her legs and lifting her directly into his arms! His clothing was thin—so thin that she could clearly sense his "raging emotions" in that moment."I'll give you one week."William's hand hovered lightly around her waist as he spoke.Kaylee dared not move, allowing him to hold her. The strong scent of alcohol surrounded her, and her heart raced. Even though she hadn't touched a drop, she felt as if she were intoxicated."You will stay by my side as my girlfriend for one year. If after that time you still think I'm deceiving you, treating you as someone else's substitute, you may leave. I won't stop you."As he spoke, his gaze remained locked on her, carefully observing her reaction. His actions had already crossed a boundary in their rela

Kaylee remained seated where she was, not moving. W’illiams clothes were too thin, and coupled with the strong scent of alcohol - although some of it had been splashed on his clothes, he had indeed been drinking. The two of them were alone in the room, and one of them had been drinking..."I've said before, I'm not so immoral as to force anyone," William interlaced his fingers, a gesture indicating his stance on the matter.Of course, Kaylee knew he wouldn't force her. What she feared was... losing control herself.Everything about William was perfect - his physique, personality, intellect, sense of responsibility. He embodied all the qualities of her ideal partner. She was afraid that if she got too close to him, she would abandon all her principles. She would indulge in foolish fantasies...Seeing that she hadn't budged an inch, William got up slightly and leaned over towards her. If she wasn't coming to him, then he would go to her.The smell of alcohol on him was intense.

"Mr. Morgan,” Kaylee met William’s dark eyes, "I didn't abandon you, I...""What, I remember you weren't good at lying, but I never thought you'd even practice your lying skills in front of me..." William's obsidian gaze studied the woman before him intently. "Then use that skill on me, trick me, for example...""Mr. Morgan!” Kaylee couldn't take it anymore and finally interrupted him.She even felt sorry for William. She bit her lip hard, taking a long time before saying, "Mr. Morgan, look at me. I'm Kaylee Lawson, not Lynn Watson.”When she mentioned Lynn’s name, William's hand that had been gripping her chin abruptly let go. The hint of drunkenness on his face vanished completely as he leisurely started putting his robe back on.Kaylee was a bit confused. What did this mean? Was William upset because she brought up Lynn? Well, that made sense... Lynn was probably the one thing he couldn't bear to talk about...Just as Kaylee was about to apologize..."Just as I thought, it wa

Kaylee only then noticed the strong scent of alcohol permeating the entire room. William seemed to be drinking liquor at the moment, the aroma in the room was the typical fragrance of red wine...It appeared that during this time, he must have consumed more than one type of alcohol in the room. Or perhaps... someone else had been here recently, drinking with him.Kaylee tried her best to view the situation with a normal mindset. Given William's status and appearance, as long as he was willing, countless women would eagerly jump into his bed without him even having to ask.And for someone of his stature to be willing to pretend to be her boyfriend to help her out - that was something she could only dream of. Moreover, with Andrew’s situation... she really had no better way to resolve it."What are you standing there for?" William rubbed his temples. "If you think it's not suitable here, then let's go to the bed.""No need, here is fine," Kaylee hurriedly interjected. "Your wound ha
