Kaylee knew Alex had an uncle - his grandfather's second wife's son. Despite being just a few years older than Alex, he was technically a generation apart.

He'd studied abroad for years. After returning, due to family circumstances, he took over the company. According to Alex, the business had been declining until his uncle implemented major reforms, transforming it into North District's leading enterprise.

Alex openly admired his uncle. Yet William Morgan remained mysterious - Kaylee had never met him.

After helping get Anne settled in the ward and changed into a hospital gown, Susanne insisted on staying overnight despite offers to call a nurse.

"I'm on call tonight and here tomorrow," Kaylee told Susanne. "Ring me if you need anything. I'll explain the stent procedure to Mr. William Morgan when he arrives."

"Thank you, dear."

Susanne walked Kaylee back to her office.

Returning to find Anne asleep, Susanne eyed the uncomfortable hospital cot. Having grown up privileged and married into wealth, she wasn't used to such discomfort.

Reflecting on the evening, Susanne felt Kaylee was truly perfect for their family. She needed to push Alex about the wedding.

She called him, and a woman answered.

"Isn't this Alex's phone? Who is this?" Susanne's refined voice tensed.

"I'm Alex's girlfriend. He's in the shower. I can pass along a message."

Susanne froze. "I'm his mother! Get him on the phone now, or he needn't come home again!"

The woman stammered apologies and rushed to get Alex.

When he came on, Susanne was livid. "Get rid of that woman immediately. Kaylee is the only daughter-in-law I'll accept. If you insist on marrying some questionable woman, you can both leave and never return!"

-

The next morning, after rounds, Kaylee stayed to explain the procedure to Anne.

"William's downstairs," Susanne entered. "He makes the family decisions now - his approval is all we need."

Kaylee smoothed her hair and went to greet him.

A man walked through the ward doors.

His black dress shirt was precisely tucked into matching slacks, emphasizing his lean frame and height.

Morning sunlight streamed through the windows, highlighting his sharp features, though his demeanor remained coolly elegant despite the warm light.

Kaylee froze.

Before she could react...

"William! You're here," Susanne called.

He nodded. "Hi, Susanne. How's my mom?"

Mom?!

Kaylee looked between them, too shocked to speak.

Susanne stepped forward, smiling. "Kaylee, this is Alex's uncle, William. I believe you haven't met before."

Kaylee, unable to respond, remained silent.

"William, this is Alex's girlfriend, my future daughter-in-law," Susanne continued proudly. "You must know of her - she graduated from North Medical and works here now."

"I'm William Morgan," he said in a cool, measured voice that revealed nothing about whether he'd known her identity before.

"Mr. Morgan... hello," Kaylee managed stiffly.

"Please, we're family," Susanne laughed.

Though they weren't - not since she and Alex had broken up.

Before she could explain, William spoke. "Tell me about my mother's condition and the procedure."

Grateful for the shift in topic, Kaylee explained Anne's situation. "The stent procedure is minimally invasive now. It's a well-established technique and our best treatment option."

"Who's performing the surgery?" His dark eyes met hers. "You?"

"Yes... unless you'd prefer another surgeon."

"No, I trust you to do it."

Kaylee froze. He spoke as if he knew her well.

Before she could respond, William walked toward the hospital room.

Though Anne had always seemed kind in their previous meetings, her face hardened when William entered.

"Why are you here? It's a minor procedure - just two weeks. The company needs you. Don't waste time here."

"I need to sign the consent forms," William replied.

Anne's expression softened. "Then sign and go. Work comes first. Don't visit during my stay."

"Understood."

William's expression remained unchanged, clearly accustomed to his mother's attitude.

Kaylee led him to handle the paperwork, Susanne following.

Afterward, Susanne said, "Kaylee, since you're off work - the mansion is so quiet with Anne here. Why don't you move back temporarily? Keep me company."

The Morgan estate was massive - over ten thousand square feet without the gardens, dozens of rooms. Kaylee had lived there before moving in with Alex.

Before she could decline, Susanne added, "Worried about Alex? I'll handle him."

Unable to mention the breakup in front of William, Kaylee reluctantly nodded.

Susanne turned to William. "You drove here, right? Would you mind giving Kaylee a ride?"

"Not at all," he replied promptly.

Remembering his cufflink in her bag, Kaylee accepted.

"Mr. Morgan."When Kaylee used this formal address, Susanne's heart sank.As a woman, she understood. Using "Mr. Morgan" meant Kaylee had completely given up on Alex.Genuinely fond of Kaylee, Susanne forced a smile. "Dear, did you and Alex have another fight? He's immature, unlike you, but he'll grow out of it...""Aunt Susanne," Kaylee interrupted gently. "We didn't fight. We broke up. I've made my decision.""I know we've spoiled Alex, but he's not a bad person.""After my mother died, everything was settled legally. When my father abandoned me, your family put me through school, gave me a home. You've been more than generous. I'm truly grateful to the Morgans. Being mindful of my position, I took good care of Alex, which gave me the chance to attend an elite university."Kaylee was genuinely grateful to the Morgans and Susanne. As a housekeeper's daughter, without that incident, she would have attended a regular public school, with far fewer opportunities."Dear...""Alex

In a panic, Kaylee snatched up the phone, hung up, and blocked the number. All in one fluid motion. When it was done, she realized her hands were still shaking."Kay-Kay" was her childhood name. The last person to call her that was her mother, when she was still alive. Her mother had loved using that name.Truth was, Kaylee's memories of her mother were fading. She only remembered her as a kind, optimistic person. From her earliest memories, her father had been a drunk and gambler who often beat her mother.Later, her mother brought her to the city for work, landing at the Morgans'.Every night, her mother would come to her room to tuck her in, holding her close, saying:"Kay-Kay is such a good girl.""Kay-Kay must grow up strong and healthy.""Kay-Kay, time for sleep..."After her mother's death, no one ever called her Kay-Kay again. And that voice on the phone - though she barely remembered it - she knew it was her father, Kelvin Green. Her mother had died protecting Sus

Lucy spotted Kaylee first.Immediately, she wrapped her arms around Alex's and rested her head on his shoulder, face glowing with feminine charm.Kaylee had thought seeing this would hurt, even if she'd moved on.After all those years together. But she felt nothing. If anything, it was almost laughable.Laughable that she'd been such a fool for this fickle man who looked down on her. That she'd repeatedly convinced herself to excuse his behavior.Ignoring Lucy's gaze, Kaylee walked up to Alex. "Mr. Morgan."His expression brightened at this formal address. He turned to her, reaching for the clothes.Kaylee handed him a shirt, then a silk scarf and tie. "Mr. Morgan, this scarf would suit these pants better, but I brought a tie too in case it's a formal occasion.""Good."Alex glanced at both items, turning to hand them to Lucy.Still clinging to his arm, Lucy didn't catch his meaning.Alex frowned. Kaylee's heart tightened. The Morgans had given her the same education as Alex. All these years, Alex kept telling her to be grateful to his family, grateful to him. She'd accepted this. This was the first time someone had said "whatever the family did for her was the least they could do."The first time someone suggested it wasn't her who owed the Morgans - they owed her.Lucy reacted first, repeating her invitation. "I'm so sorry about earlier. Kaylee, please join us for dinner. We're practically family now."Her voice remained sweet and innocent."Kaylee's worked all day, let her go," Alex interjected.Kaylee found this laughable. Now he remembered she'd worked all day? Where was this consideration when he ordered her to bring his clothes? After a long day, she really had no interest in this dinner. But since Alex didn't want her there, she absolutely had to stay."I need dinner anyway, so I'll join you," Kaylee smiled at Lucy.Alex frowned. His uncle had suggested th

William easily saw through Alex's expression.Placing a peeled shrimp on Kaylee's plate, he dabbed his fingers with a napkin. "Living together already? Kaylee glanced around the room, her eyes finally resting on William. "As Lucy just heard, my mother was the Morgans' housekeeper. Simply put, I'm a housekeeper's daughter. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to attend Mr. Morgan's engagement."Lucy knew all about Alex and Kaylee's relationship. She knew Alex hadn't completely let go.Since moving into his house, she hadn't even been allowed in Kaylee's old room.Whatever William's reasons for rushing this engagement, she'd go through with it.An engagement wasn't marriage. If this party could save her family's business, she could always break it off later.Find a better husband.Alex immediately protested. Meanwhile Wendy wanted to shop for some new outfits. As the daughter of a top lawyer who charged by the minute, Wendy naturally headed to North City's most exclusive luxury shopping district, lined with high-end flagship stores. Before she could decide which store to visit, a familiar car pulled up in front of a famous luxury boutique. Alex and Lucy stepped out, with Lucy clinging affectionately to his arm as they entered the store."This jerk Alex! He was so stingy with you back then, but now he's buying luxury goods for Lucy? Let's go see what they're getting!" Wendy pulled Kaylee toward the store."Don't bother - I was the one who always refused gifts," Kaylee explained. Throughout their relationship, she'd turned down most of Alex's gifts except for birthday presents. The reason was simple she couldn't afford to give gifts in return, even at a tenth of the price. Eventually, Alex had stopped offering except on her birthday."Well, I wanted to check out this store anyway!" Wend

After that day, Henry's only prayer was for Alex and Kaylee's relationship to work out - for them to date, marry, and live happily ever after. If that day came, he'd give them the biggest wedding gift ever, even if he wasn't invited. Not for their sake, but in hopes that William's love-struck brain wouldn't be awakened again.Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned.Just as Henry's mind wandered, William asked from his desk, "How's the investigation into the bar incident going?"That night William was injured, Henry had invited him to dinner. Their car suddenly got a flat tire, and two vans surrounded them trying to kidnap William. He was injured in the fight and had to take shelter in a crowded bar nearby."We've tried everything. Those guys truly knew nothing. The money trail went overseas and disappeared. The most suspicious was that curly-haired man on the security footage - might've been wearing a wig. No other cameras caught him," Henry reported everything he'd found. To

"But he took it on..." Kaylee knew this because the outcome was clear to everyone - William was now the head of the Morgan family. Even after Victoria had scolded him yesterday, she still had to apologize later."Exactly. My dad says his company's board members all opposed it, but William used his own money to save the Morgans. Dad calls it the only unsolved mystery about William - why he'd rescue a family that had treated him so ordinarily," Wendy said, mimicking her father's tone. The two girls lay on the same bed, with Kaylee scrolling through her phone as she asked, "Could it be that the Morgans were actually good to him, but others just didn't know about it?""Good? Hell no. His father's first wife died early, and his marriage to William's mom was basically a middle-aged arrangement without much love. His mom was almost forty when she had William, and soon after his birth, mother and son moved abroad, rarely returning," Wendy explained, leaning closer to whisper, "I heard Willi

Kaylee had never paid attention to economic trends, wealth rankings, or prominent business figures in the country.Wendy's father was a renowned corporate lawyer who dealt with the nation's elite and wealthy. Growing up in this environment, Wendy knew all about the legendary figures in these circles. Among them, William Morgan stood out as particularly remarkable.Kaylee couldn't understand what Wendy meant by "being deceived." "What would anyone gain by tricking me?""He could be an impersonator. Are you sure he's really Alex's uncle? Did Alex confirm this, or did you just take his word for it?" Wendy fired off questions rapidly.Simply put, she doubted this man was actually William Morgan. According to rumors, while William wasn't completely detached from human emotions, he certainly wasn't the type to casually drive someone home."He's been staying at the Morgan mansion with me these past few days, and... he signed the consent forms for his mother's surgery today. There's no mi

The restaurant was perched alongside the river in North District, facing a skyline of glittering skyscrapers with their dazzling light displays. They were seated at a prime window table with an unmatched view of the city.As the waiter brought their menus, William explained, "They're known for their contemporary Asian fusion here. Feel free to order whatever catches your eye."Kaylee scanned the menu, which featured both traditional and modern spicy dishes. She remembered dining at a similar restaurant with Alex once. The moment she'd started ordering, he'd yanked the menu from her hands with a sneer, "You obviously don't know fine dining. These dishes are completely tasteless - no one with class would order them."That experience had shattered her confidence in ordering for months afterward.Noticing her hesitation, William suggested, "How about their signature spicy beef? It's a house specialty.""I seem to always order that...""Having a go-to dish at every restaurant is a goo

"So sure this apartment is mine to rent to you?" William asked, unfazed by her revelation. The realtor beside them, however, looked shocked and flustered.Kaylee glanced back at the luxury apartment one more time. In the early evening light, warm sunset rays streamed through the floor-to-ceiling ultra-clear glass windows, flooding the entire room. The well-maintained leather sofa set in the living room gleamed softly in the sunlight. Even the sleek metal coffee table with its modern design had taken on a gentle glow.Everything she saw confirmed her suspicions. No one would rent out a place like this at such a low price. For any reason. But instead of pointing this out, she turned back to William and said earnestly, "Because I know I've never been particularly lucky. I don't believe such coincidences would happen to me."William sighed softly. "My staff handled this poorly," he admitted, acknowledging his involvement."Thank you for trying to help, Mr. Morgan." "Of course," William agreed readily. They were set to meet the realtor at the entrance of an apartment complex near her hospital. The complex was about forty years old with no property management, and the roads inside were cluttered with debris on both sides. Cars couldn't even drive through, forcing them to walk in.William's brow furrowed as he took in the dilapidated buildings, potholed roads, and makeshift chicken coops scattered across what should have been green spaces.Noticing his expression, Kaylee said apologetically, "I'm sorry, Mr. Morgan. All the places I'm looking at are similar to this. Please feel free to leave if you have other things to do.""I'm staying," William replied firmly.Their realtor turned out to be a woman. William stepped into the hospital elevator and dialed Henry Luther's number. After a brief connection, he quickly explained what needed to be done. Despite Henry's clear reluctance, he had no choice but to agree.—Late that afternoon, around 5:50, Kaylee finished her ward rounds and was heading back to her office when she noticed William waiting by the nurses' station. He'd swapped his formal morning attire for a more casual look - a light yellow patterned shirt paired with faded jeans. The change in outfit gave him a completely different aura. His outfit change didn't surprise Kaylee - Alex had always done the same, freshening up before important client meetings. Even just standing there, William's striking features were drawing admiring glances from the nursing staff."Mr. Morgan, give me a moment to change," she called out. Like all doctors, she needed to leave her white coat at work. Her plan was simple: clean William's wounds, then meet the realtor. But a young nurse

"Alex, let go of me." Kaylee struggled with all her might.Alex gazed into Kaylee's eyes, tightening his grip on her wrist one final time before releasing his hold. "I'm sorry," Alex said, a self-deprecating laugh escaping his lips. "If I told you I once thought you'd be the one I'd marry, would you believe me?"Kaylee stopped trying to make him stand. Half a meter away, she calmly faced him. "Alex, since our breakup, I've reflected on things. No matter how things played out, I never would have married you. I would have realized that eventually. It was just a matter of time.""Kay, I know I'm not a good man...""Let's not discuss this further. Treat Lucy well. Taking responsibility for your partner is what a man of integrity should do."Kaylee had no desire to hear more of Alex's reflections, though she had waited years for him to have this realization. But it only happened once he had completely lost her."Kay...""Alex, I've let go of the past and wish you happiness." Kaylee
