The sunlight streamed in between the curtains, waking Silvia from her the slumber she had experienced months ago. With her body still frail, she felt relieved after the broth sha had yesterday.

Silvia rose gradually, gauging her energy. Her head had stopped spinning, but her limbs still felt unsteady. A rap at her door surprised her.

"Y-yes?" she shouted, her voice more assertive than the day before.

Then the door swung open...before Ralph entered, dressed in a tailored suit, with a perfectly shaped beards. He stood uncomfortably at the entrance, hesitant to step in.

"You're awake," he noted, his voice calm. "How do you feel?"

Silvia wrapped the lightweight blanket around her shoulders, experiencing a feeling of consciousness. "Improved, sir." "I appreciate the meal."

Ralph replied with a decisive nod. "Put on your clothes and join me in my study in fifteen minutes. We have to discuss an issue."

Before she had a chance to reply, he shut the door, leaving Silvia looking at him in

Her breath stalled as she touched her swollen lips. He had kissed her. Silvia considered herself resilient and strong, she knew she could endure anything as long as it was for a good cause, but this was levels above what she expected would happen to her in this cursed place.Hunger, thirst, being overworked, beatings. They were all bearable as long as she still had her body and her soul to herself. But he had kissed her like he wanted to suck out her soul.Silvia had never felt so helpless in her life. A tear slipped down her cheeks and she blinked, snapping out of it. She wiped it, she still had her life, it was a one time thing. It would never happen again. She hoped.A part of her was curious about who this Alexander was. If he truly was Ralph’s brother, why had Ralph kissed her? Did he have non-brotherly feelings for this Alexander? She found it highly unnatural. She found everything that went on in the house highly unnatural. They were so rich but they appeared to be suffering ev

“Do your vocal cords suddenly stop working? Is that enjoyable?” Ralph asked again, his eyes flashing with an emotion Silvia couldn't name.“I don’t understand sir”.“You’re smiling”, he said, pointing to her lips and sitting on a stool. She had no idea Ralph Spade knew how to sit on a stool. Wasn’t he only accustomed to the finest things? What was an old wooden stool even doing in a mansion as fancy as this? She adjusted her smile, making her expression serious. Was smiling grounds for a punishment?“Forgive my manners sir”, she bowed her head. Sometimes she felt like she was in an ancient drama. Slave to the evil emperor. Except this time the emperor had kissed her. He was a foolish emperor.“How dramatic. I’m not asking you to stop”, Ralph’s face hardened. Silvia stretched her lips into something that resembled more of a grimace than a smile. It reminded her of the times where her mother would scold her and force her to smile. Her mother that she couldn’t see, because of this man.

Silvia’s hand trembled slightly as the overwhelming smell of cows, pigs, and chickens that were still very much alive forced her to block her breathing. She knew it would lead to more problems than she wanted because when she would have to breathe again she would need to take in a lot of air, a lot of contaminated air.She ran back inside and took a deep breath, free from the nauseating smell. What kind of rich people were these? They were the dirty kind. She should have known ever since she was asked to clean those dirty windows. Why would the window in his study be that dirty? The man inhaled dust every day, no wonder he was so crazy. Was it so hard to ask that the animals be washed before bringing them in?Was she being punished extra? She couldn’t believe Cynthia went through this every week. The woman was strong. Very strong. Silvia was weak. Very Weak.“Howdy, I got this week’s batch of animals. Gonna sign or what?” the driver stretched out his head through his side window. Silv

Silvia pushed the door open as she tried to exit her boss's office. It was her duty to make sure she cleaned the office every morning before his arrival. Today was no different—except for the disaster that was just about to unfold. As she stepped out, she bumped into a solid object, leaving her momentarily dazed. Slowly looking up and ready to lash out at whatever that was, her heart skipped a beat as she saw what, or rather whom she had collided with — her boss, Ralph.“I am sorry sir,” she muttered apologetically. As she tried to regain her balance, she knocked over a cup of water which spilled over his crisp and expensive shirt. This was a really tense moment because she could see her boss fuming in great anger.“What in blazes is the matter with you?” Ralph asked angrily. He had just arrived at the office in a really bad mood, and this was not the best way to start his day.“I am really sorry sir,” Silvia kept pleading to receive mercy from her boss. But Ralph is a man who hardly

CHAPTER 2Silvia could not read the report she was seeing on the piece of paper. The letters and numbers jumbled together, an illegible mess. Her heart pounded against her ribs. The cold white hospital walls appeared to be suffocating her, crushing her under the burden of the news. The quiet beeping of heart monitors in the distance echoed in her ears, a steady reminder of mortality."What is this, sir?" She questioned in a puzzled manner with a very confused look on her face. The doctor slowly exhaled, as if getting ready.“Your mother...," he adjusted his glasses, "I am sorry ma'am. Your mother has an ischemic cardiomyopathy, a severe heart condition,” he broke the news to her, the words hanging heavily in the air.Silvia’s head snapped up. “A what?” Her voice cracked. She blinked, trying to shake her head as if that might somehow cause the medical jargon to make sense."Doctor, you just told me she was fine! How can she be fine if she has. that? A minute ago, you were the one telli

The office was filled with cold silence as the two parties just kept staring at each other.Ralph was trying to read her expression, while Silvia was just nervous.“I didn't hear you well. Do you mind repeating what you just said?” Ralph asked firmly. The way his tone sounded drove fear into Silvia's nerves.Silvia took a long, deep breath when Ralph asked her to explain the situation.“Please sir, I…I need… I need your help, sir,” she stuttered. It was evident that her fear had the most of her.The air-conditioning in the office was on but, she found herself sweating profusely. Sweat was running down her back, and she could sense the heat creeping up her neck under Ralph's intense scrutiny. She sat fidgeting in her chair with her legs trembling just slightly.“What do you need me to do? What is it all about?” He asked curiously.Even if he decides to help her, he needs to know where his money is going. That's how a businessman thinks.Yesterday's memory came rushing back like waves—t

Silvia found it hard to process what her boss was saying. They had never had a close discussion other than this one time, and now he was asking her to marry him.She knew nothing about her boss's lifestyle, preferences, likes, and dislikes.“Did I say anything wrong?” Ralph noticed Silvia was lost in her thoughts as she tried to unravel the mystery and reasons behind his request. After a long night of reflection, Ralph realized that proposing a contract marriage to Silvia could be a practical and mutually beneficial solution for both of them.Truth is, he had no love interest in Silvia...not at all. The marriage was a ruse. She was actually going to take on the role of a maid in his home. This would not only lighten his daily burdens but also allow him to save a substantial amount of money that he would otherwise spend on hiring additional workers. It would also reduce the unnecessary pressure on him to get married. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. The contract was going t

“Where is my mother?” Silvia asked as she angrily pushed the doctor's office open. “You're here already. That's a good thing” The doctor stretched his hand, requesting that she have a seat. But Silvia was seriously pissed. She wasn't ready to sit down and have a peaceful talk with the doctor.“I can't find my mother in her ward,” she said angrily. The doctor, who now understood the reason behind her deep anger, started laughing very hard.Silvia just stood in shock, as she tried to check if there was anything on her that could amuse the doctor.“Your mother. She is in a private ward, and some doctors are trying to run some tests on her because of her surgery tomorrow” the doctor said.Silvia, who was not informed about anything of that sort, had to take a seat first before she would continue the conversation.“I don't understand. The surgery. But who paid for the surgery?” She asked confusingly, with a puzzled expression.“A man called. He refused to disclose who he was. All he did

Three days without nourishment seemed like forever. Silvia's stomach had transitioned long ago from sharp hunger pains to a void that caused her limbs to feel heavy as lead. She had been allowed water and slight comforts, but even that made her feel queasy as she drank it gradually from the bathroom faucet. On the morning of the third day, Silvia pulled herself out of bed, her uniform fitting more loosely than earlier. The mirror showed hollow cheeks and shadows under her eyes. Spraying cold water on her face, she tried to brighten herself for the day's activities. On that day, Silvia was especially cautious with her work: arranging the heavy bottles in the wine cellar, and dusting off the Persian rugs on the front porch. These tasks kept demanding energy that Silvia no longer had."You look terrible," Rebecca remarked with glee as Silvia entered the kitchen for her instructions. Savoring her morning espresso, she sat at the counter, the strong, rich smell causing Silvia's hungry be

Silvia's eyelids slowly shifted to the sunlight pouring in through unusual curtains. Her body felt heavy, and her mind was filled with tiredness. The sheets beneath her seemed gentle, excessively gentle. This wasn't her mattress. She jerked up, her heart racing. She noticed...the luxury, crystals on the nightstand. This was Ralph's bedroom. How had she ended up...Her last memory was tucking Ralph in, discovering the picture, and going to her own bedroom. Was she so exhausted that she fell here instead? Definitely not. She would not have made that mistake. A gentle groan from beside her made her pause. Ralph was lying on the other side of the bed, completely dressed, with one arm covering his face. His breathing was consistent and peaceful, his expression tranquil in sleep. Silvia carefully shifted to the bed's edge, wishing not to disrupt it. She had to go before... The door suddenly burst open, slamming against the wall with a loud thud. Rebecca stood by the entrance, dressed in

After Silvia was done cleaning, it was already past midnight. Her fingers ached from all the work whilst her back throbbed intensely. The pains of hunger had transformed into a constant, gnawing discomfort. She entered the kitchen hoping to find something, anything, to eat before getting into bed. The kitchen was dim and quiet. Silvia switched on the little light over the sink, trying to remain quiet. She pulled open the fridge, the gentle light casting shadows on her weary face. There were dinner remnants, but she didn't dare to take them. Rebecca would notice. She looked and found a crust of bread and a little bit of cheese concealed behind the dishes. That would need to suffice. A sound on the door made her start as she shut the refrigerator. Ralph stood there swaying a little, his tie undone about his neck and his eyes red."What are you doing?" he mumbled, holding onto the doorframe for balance. Silvia swiftly concealed the bread behind her back. "Not a thing, sir." "Simply ti

Silvia awoke the next morning with her head spinning. The green dress was draped over her closet door—proof that last night hadn't been a dream. For an evening, she'd sat as a guest at Ralph's table, not as his servant. She touched the silver necklace still fastened around her neck, wondering what the day would hold.Lost in her daydream, she was suddenly jolted back to reality by a loud, insistent knock at the door."Get up! Now!" Rebecca's voice cracked like a whip.Silvia opened the door to find Rebecca flushed, her perfectly manicured nails digging into her palms."Did you imagine one dinner would make a difference?" Rebecca spat, shoving past Silvia into the little room. Her eyes landed on the emerald dress. With a snort of disgust, she ripped it from the hanger. "This little pretense is ended.""Don't," Silvia whispered, extending a feeble hand toward the dress.Rebecca slapped her hand away with so much force the sound echoed through the room. "Nothing in this house is yours.

As Silva knelt beside the fountain, the setting sun behind the clouds dyed the sky in dancing shades of orange and pink. Hours of kneeling in the sun had numbed her legs and parched her throat. She didn't even have the energy to look up when Ralph's shadow cast as far as she knelt."Come on," he ordered in a monotonic tone.Silva attempted to walk but her legs didn't coordinate. Her knees buckled and she stumbled forward, then quickly steadying herself on the edge of the fountain.Ralph repeated irritation edged into his tone, "I advise you to get up."Silva muttered, her voice cracking from dehydration, “I cannot feel my legs.”Reaching down, Ralph groaned as he yanked her up. Silva gasped at the blood flowing back into her legs; pins and needles shot up from her knees."Go clean yourself up," he snapped and jerked her arm down.Silva nodded dazedly. "Yes, sir."As Ralph walked away, Silva steeled what little bravery remained to her. "Sir?"He halted, not so much as turning around. "
