ALINA

I blinked at him.

What kind of stupid question was that?

He was really asking if I thought he didn’t want me?

I folded my arms across my chest. I thought about ignoring him, but I was too angry. “Are you serious?”

Luca didn’t answer. He just stared at me like I was the one who wasn’t making sense.

I laughed, though I didn’t think his situation was funny anymore. “Your actions say everything, Luca. They speak louder than words.”

His eyes darkened. “Oh yeah?” His voice was tight. “And what do my actions say?”

My pulse kicked up, but I kept my chin high. “That you don’t want me.”

Luca threw his hands in the air, looking like he had just heard the most ridiculous thing ever. “That’s bullshit.”

“Is it?” I leaned in, my hands pressing into my lap. “You kissed me. You touched me. You had me spread out on that table like a fucking buffet,” I pressed my palms to my face, suddenly embarrassed, “and then you walked away. So forgive me for thinking you don’t want me.”

Luca cursed under his

LUCAI didn’t bother looking at my father. I was too tired to argue. Too tired for the tense silence pressing down on the room.Instead, I turned to Alina, still standing in the doorway.“Come and eat,” I said. She didn’t move. She stared at my father like she was seeing a ghost, her body stiff like she was preparing for another fight.I sighed, pushed my chair back, and stood. I walked over, took her hand, and pulled her toward the table. Her fingers were cold in mine, and for once, she let me lead her without a word. That was strange.I almost wanted to laugh. She had fought me over everything so far. Argued, pushed, tested me at every turn. And now, when I expected resistance, she was quiet?Maybe she was as tired as I was.I pulled out a chair for her. She sat, lowering her eyes to the table. My father was still watching us, his expression tight with anger. I ignored him and turned to Sofia instead. “Eat,” I said, nodding at the food on her plate. She nodded, then picked up her fo

ALINAThe car ride was quiet.I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the places we passed. I hadn’t been back to my father’s house since the wedding.I hadn’t planned to return in a while, but now, here I was, heading straight there. My mother had refused to clean out my father’s study.Months after his death and she still didn't want to. Though my parents' marriage had been arranged, she had come to like him intensely.I wondered vaguely if that would ever happen for Luca and me.Valentina broke the silence. “So? How did the meeting go?”I tipped my head against the seat. “Roberto made a scene as usual. He pulled a gun on me.”Valentina stared at me, shocked. “You’re serious?”“Yeah.”A beat of silence. Then, “So what happened?”I didn’t look at her. “Luca came in and ruined everything. I had it under control. I even told him not to come, but of course, he didn't listen.”Valentina snorted. “By ruining everything, I guess you mean he saved your life?”I frowned at her

ALINAI stared at the diary. It was black, square, and leather. Worn, like it had been touched too many times. My fingers hovered over it.What if it was personal? What if it had things I wasn’t supposed to see?I swallowed, running my thumb along the spine. It felt strange, finding something of my father’s after all this time. Like he had left a part of himself behind, just waiting for me to discover it.Part of me wanted to open it right there. The other part felt protective of it, like it wasn’t even mine to touch.I let out a slow breath and pushed the drawer back in, hiding it. Then, after a second, I pulled it open again, just to see if I had worked the latch correctly. The drawer slid out smoothly.I closed it once more, pressing it firmly shut. I’d go through it later. When I was alone.Even as I cleared the rest of the desk, moving papers and sorting through old receipts, my mind stayed on the diary. What was inside? What had my father been writing about?I was still thinking

LUCAI sat in my office, fingers around the heavy glass of my tumbler. The whiskey burned down my throat, but it didn’t do much to calm me.The latest shipment of guns was late. I hated delays. These weren’t just any guns. The businesses who ordered from me paid top price because they knew I only dealt with the best.No second-rate stock, no excuses, and definitely no waiting. If I didn’t deliver on time, they’d start looking elsewhere. And that wasn’t going to happen.Marco sat across from me, relaxed in a way that made my patience even thinner."Anything yet?"He shook his head. "Still nothing."I held the glass tighter, then deliberately loosened my fingers. I didn’t want to break the glass. It had been a birthday gift from Sofia. "I want updates every five minutes. If that shipment isn’t here soon, I’ll be the one handling it myself."Marco didn’t argue. He just nodded, watching as I downed the rest of my drink and set the empty glass on the desk with a dull thud.I leaned back in

ALINAI lay on my bed, flipping through the diary again. My brows pulled together as I read another page.None of this made sense. How had my father even gotten all this?It wasn’t just names. It was secrets. The kind of things no one should know.My stomach twisted as I ran my fingers over a page listing every Mafia family in Chicago, ranked from the biggest to the smallest. There were notes beside each name—allegiances, betrayals, weaknesses. How the hell did he know?I turned another page, but before I could read more, a knock sounded at the door.I shut the diary so fast the pages folded, then shoved it under my pillow and sat up, smoothing my shirt."Come in."Sofia poked her head inside. "You want to come out for a stroll? I’m heading out."I hadn’t left the house all day. My only interaction had been my call to Mikhail earlier, checking in on the warehouse. He’d told me nothing had been moved out or in. No changes. But he was watching."Any information," I had told him, "no mat

LUCAI had no damn clue who was stupid enough to steal from me.The Alvarados? Maybe. My father had said they had something planned. Had they found out about three shipments and decided that they wanted a part of it? I didn't think so. This was too bold. Too messy. They weren’t reckless enough to pull something like this.Or was I wrong?I held the steering wheel tighter, my foot pressing harder on the gas. Victoria’s name went through my mind, and I nearly laughed. No chance. She didn’t have the power for this. Even if she wanted to pay me back for refusing to keep her as my mistress, she wouldn’t be this reckless.Would she?I clenched my teeth and shook the thought off as I pulled up to the building. My men were inside, waiting. I had called three of them I trusted most for a meeting. The second I walked through the door, the conversation cut off.Viktor stood by the table, arms crossed. Dario leaned forward, elbows on his knees. Rafael was near the window, unreadable as ever.

ALINALuca was angry. Not the kind of controlled, quiet frustration he usually carried. This was different. It was deadly, barely contained. A coil wound too tight, waiting to snap.He turned to me, jaw locked. "Is it the guns?"I didn’t answer right away because, truthfully, I didn’t know.Mikhail hadn’t opened the shipment yet. I’d told him to wait until I got there. But if it was the guns, then what the hell were they doing in my warehouse?I met Luca’s eyes. "I don’t know."He didn’t like that answer.I forced myself to stay calm. "The warehouse Mikhail called about, it was recently added to the Costa lease."Luca’s head snapped toward me. He was looking at me like I was suddenly the enemy. "And you’re just telling me this now?"I was tense. "It’s my family’s business. It wasn’t your concern."His nostrils flared, and I braced for him to snap, to say something that would make us fight each when we were supposed to be working together. Why did it feel like he was about to fight m

LUCAThe dungeon smelled like damp and blood. The man was hanging from the ceiling, arms stretched, his head slumped forward. He was still conscious but barely. And I hadn't even touched him yet. I sat in the chair across from him, legs spread, elbows on my knees. My fingers tapped against my thigh, my thigh tapped against the chair. Something about this wasn’t sitting right. The shipment showed up at Alina’s warehouse. The missing drivers. The fact that this man, one of the original drivers, was still alive when the others had disappeared.I didn’t like it.The door creaked open. Marco and Olga stepped in.“The shipment is secure,” Marco said. “It’ll be distributed by morning.”I nodded, my eyes still on the man hanging in front of me.Olga stepped forward. “You want me to handle him?”I didn’t answer right away. I could question him now, break a few bones, force him to talk, but the truth was, I wasn’t sure he even knew anything. Not yet.He was one of my men and I didn't doubt t

ALINAMikhail was waiting at the door when I arrived at the club. He was dressed in black, and had a gun at his waist. He gave instructions to one of the men and when they had stepped back inside, he nodded and pushed the door open for me."It’s packed tonight."I stepped inside the club, almost eager to see what it looked like.Heat, perfume and sweat were mixed together in the air. The smell hit me like a physical force.Mikhail stayed close as I walked deeper into the club. This was only my second time here. My father had never liked me being around his business, and had always kept me away from certain parts of his world. But now, the rules were different. He was gone, and this place was mine.I stopped at the top of the stairs and looked down.People were dancing downstairs against each other. Some were making out, kissing right in front of others. But it was the pole dancers that held my attention.I'd never seen anyone dancing on a pole and for a moment, I stopped where I w

LUCAFor a second, I didn’t move.Victoria stood there, completely bare, her eyes locked on mine like she was waiting for a reaction. Like she was expecting one. What the fuck was she doing?"Put on the robe," I said, my voice flat. She tilted her head, a sultry smile on her lips. "Make me."She started toward me, her bare feet silent against the floor. When she got close, she leaned in, pressing her lips to mine.I felt the fire of her mouth, the softness of her lips. My body reacted on instinct and I kissed her back for a moment, remembering the many times I had wanted her desperately.I was disgusted with myself. What the hell was I doing? I was married.I pulled away, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand like I could clean her taste off my lips.Victoria laughed, slow and knowing, like she thought this was all a game. Like I was playing hard to get. She winked at me. "You missed me, didn’t you?""Put on the robe," I repeated, my voice harder now.She didn’t move, instead she

LUCAI was pissed. Not the usual kind of irritation I carried when things didn’t go as planned. This felt way too sharp, like it would cut the next person who tried to speak with me.Victoria had called Alina. Had harassed her.How the fuck had she even gotten Alina's number? I sighed. This definitely sounded like something Victoria would do. Why did I even suspect that she might steal my gun shipment?I grabbed my phone and called Victoria. She had some explaining to do. She picked up. "Luca, darling. It's certainly to nice to hear from you.” I didn't have time for pleasantries. I gritted my teeth and snapped into the phone. "Be home by seven. We need to talk."Victoria purred, sounding too happy at her words. "Yes, Daddy."My jaw ticked. Maybe going to her house was a bad idea, but I didn't want to meet her outside, and not at my office either. What if she came and repeated the same scene she had the last time they met?I ended the call without another word. Someone knocked at my

ALINAFor a second, I thought I had heard wrong. I stared at my phone, trying to understand what had just happened. Why would anyone call me, breathe into the phone then hang up after calling me a bitch and hoping that I would die? Who the hell was it? I couldn't think of anyone whom I had pissed off like that. Then it hit me.Victoria.I laughed bitterly. Now that I had put a name to the face, the voice even sounded familiar. Of course, it was her.It made complete sense. So she was still angry at me? Well so was I.I called her back. The phone barely rang before she picked up."Stealing my man, you pathetic whore?" Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with venom. I could imagine the look of hate on her face. I scoffed. "Oh, but you're the bitch, aren't you? You're the one who thinks a man who is married is still your man.” Victoria yelled. "Don’t act innocent, Alina. You think Luca actually wants you? You’re just a piece in the game. You think he’ll love you?" She laughed cruell

ALINAI stepped out of the shower, dried off, and pulled on jeans and a sweater. As I picked up my phone from the nightstand, it rang with an incoming call. It was a number I didn’t recognize. It wasn't saved on my phone. I allowed it to keep ringing. If it was important, they’d call again.I grabbed a brush, ran it through my hair, then wore some flats and used some lip gloss on my lips. The last few weeks had been very busy. I needed to rest, and to do something I actually enjoyed while doing that.A lazy day. That’s what I wanted. Something simple. Maybe shopping. I needed a few things anyway.I imagined Sofia would want to come. I called Pietro to get the car ready for me.I headed to her room, knocking lightly before pushing the door open. She was sitting on the bed, reading a fashion magazine. She looked up. "What’s up?""Felt like shopping. Thought you might want to come."She dropped the magazine onto the bed. "Absolutely. I won't give up the opportunity to shop for anythin

LUCAI walked into the dining room, stretching. The house was quiet and I was already dressed for work.Nothing had gone wrong so far so I was hoping for a less than busy day.Sofia sat at the dining table, cup of tea in front of her, a book in her hand. The sun was already up and it was shining on her blonde hair. She looked up as I walked in, closing the book and turning it face down on the table. I had a feeling it was a book I wasn't supposed to know she was reading. She smiled at me sweetly, which confirmed my suspicion. "Morning.""Morning," I muttered, heading straight for the coffee pot. I poured myself a cup, took a sip, and pulled out a chair across from her.She watched me over the rim of her cup, waiting.I drank almost half the coffee before turning my attention to my waiting sister. “Where's Alina?” She nodded upstairs. “Still in her room.” I nodded. It meant I wouldn't get to see her before leaving for work. I felt heavily disappointed. I finished my coffee. "Are

ALINAI stared at him, my fork frozen halfway to my mouth.Luca didn’t look at me. He kept his eyes on his plate, shoulders tense, his jaw clenched so tightly I could see the muscle ticking.“My father shot it to death.”His voice was flat, almost indifferent, but something about the way he held his knife so tight told a different story.I set my fork down. “Luca…”“It was a long time ago,” he said, cutting into his steak like we were discussing the weather. “Eat your food.”I hesitated, watching him. I wasn’t sure why, but his sudden iciness made my chest feel tight.I picked up my glass of water and sipped, choosing my next words carefully. “What was his name?”Luca’s glared at me like I was stopping him from enjoying his food. For a second, I thought he wouldn’t answer. Then, so quietly I almost missed it, he said, “Bruno.”I smiled. “That’s a cute name.”Luca started cutting his meat again, this time stabbing at it like it had angered him. “It wasn’t cute. He was a mutt. Small,

LUCAI could see that she wanted to say yes.I could also see that she was confused. “Dinner? Just for food?” I nodded. “Just for food.” The evening was still early. I thought we could visit one of my night clubs after stopping at a restaurant for dinner. I was in a good mood suddenly. After dealing with Roberto and having all the Uzis sent out successfully, I had received a new order for double the batch we had just sent out.Alina got out of bed. “I'd like that. Give me a few minutes to change.” I fell back on the bed, placing my head on my bent elbows. She stood beside the bed, watching me like I was an alien. She waved her hand to the door. “Get out, Luca. I'm not undressing with you staring at me that way.” I turned onto my stomach and stretched out on the bed. “Actually you are.” She glared at me. “Leave.” “No.” I said. I hadn't even thought about her undressing, but now that she mentioned it, I really wanted to see it. Alina folded her arms, her eyes narrowing as she

ALINAI could feel my head banging. I didn't want to say a word to anyone but I knew I wouldn't be able to rest until I knew how Luca had found out it was Uncle Roberto who stole the guns. I looked down at my shaking hands and squeezed them hard until they stopped. Pietro was looking worried as he looked at me. I didn't even bother telling him about the day I'd had. What was he going to do? I shouldn't care about Roberto but I was worried that Luca had killed him. “Find whatever you can on Roberto, I want to know where he was, who he spoke to and what they said. Do you understand?" I told Pietro. He nodded and walked away. I heard a sigh behind me. It was Luca. The look on his face told me he had just heard my request. He didn't look particularly angry, but I could tell from his narrowed eyes that he wasn't pleased. He sat in front of me. “You could have asked me, you know. I would have told you how I know." I shrugged, looking away from him. I couldn't hold his eyes. “You were to
