Kiara’s POV
I ignored his question, stomping over to my bed and dragging his sneaker-covered foot off my sheets. “Caden!” I growled and he raised his hands in surrender.“Sorry! Sorry! I was worried!”I rolled my eyes. “And that’s why your dirty shoes just HAD to be on my bed?”His smile was sheepish. “Well, I had to be comfortable while waiting for you. Do you know the lies I had to come up with to get the Luna off your tail? You would’ve been wolf-kebab by now if not for me!”I rolled my eyes again and went to the bathroom to change out of my clothes and into my nightwear. I could smell him on my shirt. I touched a hand to the spot on my neck where he’d bit me.To my relief and frustrating disappointment, there was nothing there. Not even a scar to remember it by, almost like it never happened.Caden wouldn’t shut up about wanting to know where I was, and I myself wanted to talk about this shocking development with somebody, so when I got back into the room, I climbed the bed and sat cross-legged to narrate the entirety of what happened, leaving out the more…intimate bits.He sat there, his eyes widening, mouth gaping with every detail I gave. When I was done, he blinked at me.“So in summary of your night of adventure, you went on a run and got kidnapped by a smoking hot vampire who turns out to be your mate, as confirmed by your very horny, very much into him wolf?”“Shhh!” I hissed throwing one of my pillows at his head and glancing at my room door to make sure no one was going to come bursting through. He dodged it and snickered.“I was not horny!” I fumed. He raised a brow and a blush colored my cheeks. He laughed. “Stop that! I didn’t say he was hot either. Just strong.”“Mhmm. Like you would be this worked up over a man that didn’t look like a Greek god. All that pale skin and the dark eyes.” He fanned himself with his hands, wriggling his brows at me. I glared and reached for something else to throw at him“Okay, okay. I’ll stop. No need for more violence.” He said quickly and I dropped the teddy bear I was going to use as a weapon. “Are you gonna tell your parents?”This was the million dollar question and I wasn’t sure about the answer. Should I confess that I had finally found my ever-elusive mate? Or did I just keep silent and find a suitable enough werewolf match to make them happy and try to build whatever life I could with him?Inside me, my wolf growled, clearly not liking that suggestion any more than I did. Would they be okay with me having a Vampire mate after everything our family has suffered at the hands of a Vampire?“Honestly, I don’t know. We’ve been waiting for my mate for years now but no one expected… this.” My confusion must’ve been clear in my tone because he was silent for a bit.“Well, okay. I’ll keep your secret till you decide.” He said and I smiled at him.“Thanks, Cade.”He managed to wait a full minute before accosting me again. “So…What else did he say? Did you guys kiss?”“We did not kiss! We just─” I broke off, immediately regretting starting the sentence.Caden’s eyes narrowed at me. “You what? Had sex?”“What?! No! Goodness! He bit me. That’s all.”His eyes widened again. “He what?”I shrugged, a tad defensively. “That’s how I knew he was my mate.”“Oh my god. That actually sounds hot as fuck. When are you seeing him again?”“Well, he asked me to come tomorrow, but I’m certainly not gonna do that.” Caden gave me a disbelieving look. “What? I won’t!”He shrugged then snickered. “If you say so.”“I do! I hate Vampires!” I reminded him.He only smiled. “I wonder if your wolf does too.”I was going to argue some more but he yawned and stretched. “Okay. I’m beat. I’ve been up waiting for your ass. Now I need my beauty sleep. Naturally, you will take the floor.”“Naturally? It’s my room!”“Yes and if you were in it when you were supposed to be, I wouldn’t have had to lie here and make many tremendous lies on your account. PS, if your mom asks you about a bachelorette party, tell her it went great.”I groaned. “You did not!” I shrilled and it was his turn to shush me.He snickered. “Don’t worry. I didn’t. I told her you were having an illicit affair instead. She was sort of relieved about it.”“Caden!” I growled and he snickered again before burrowing deeper into my bed, drawing the duvet up to his chin.“Goodnight Kiara. Hope you enjoy the floor.” He said in a sing-song voice. I rolled my eyes and waved my middle finger at him.“Fuck you asshole.” He cackled.***The following day, at about two PM on my birthday afternoon, a knock came at my door. I raised my head from the book I was reading and told whoever was there to enter. A maid opened the door and poked her head inside.“Miss? Your dress is finished. The Luna says you should come downstairs to try it on.”I groaned. “Just tell her I’m in the bathroom or something. I’ll do it later.”“You will do no such thing!” my mom’s voice snapped just then as she came up behind the maid. Unlike the girl, she entered my room and glared at me, hands on her hip. “Kiara! Your party is by 7!” She shrilled.“Okay, okay. I’m coming!” I whined, climbing from my bed. “It’s not like I haven’t tried four dresses already,” I muttered under my breath and she immediately whirled around to glare at me.“What was that?”“Nothing. Nothing. I’m very grateful for you taking the stress to make sure I look wonderful tonight.”She eyed the innocent expression on my face. “Caden claimed otherwise but I know you weren’t at any mutual friend’s house last night. Do you want your father to know you weren’t at home as well?” Her voice was as sweet as mine had been just no.I shook my head rapidly. She smiled. “Good. Now shut up and go try your dress.”I hurried past her. “Yes, mother!”Two hours later, my mom was droning on and on about preparations. Our manor was bustling with people from designers making finishing touches on their ostentatious decorations, to waitstaff readying cocktails and setting up all the food and drinks we would need.By seven PM when the party was scheduled to start, the entire house was ready and I was stuck in my room being prodded, slathered, sprayed, and layered in make-up, hair products, dress, and heels. I barely followed their instructions, my mind drifting constantly to the Vampire who was my mate. I couldn’t lie, I wanted to go to him. Badly. My fingers pricked with the need to touch him. My lips yearned and tingled, wondering what his kiss would feel like. My wolf was restless and it was stressing me out, making me snap and snarl at every little thing. She was frustrated. She was irritated. She was hungry. So hungry. Not for this party or any food, I realized with a sinking feeling. For him.Gritting my teeth and clenching my fist against the desperate burst of need that just exploded within me, I forced my mind back to the scene at hand. I had my birthday party to attend. There were guests to mingle with and wine to drink. I would not spend a single second worrying about that bastard.“Okay, Miss. We’re done.” one of the maids that had been fussing with me finally said and they all stepped back as a collective to examine my work.I turned, to see myself in the mirror, approving of the woman that stared back at me. The dress was very flattering, a lovely ice blue that brought out my eyes with multiple aquamarine stones and beads woven into the fabric. The neckline plunged deeply, though not too much before my father had a heart attack. Seeing the effect of the finished dress almost made me believe all those hours had been worth it. My jet-black hair had been curled and pinned up, exposing my neck to the night air.I tried not to think of the other things my neck was very much exposed to do. Tried not to think about him seeing me like this. Instead, I let my maids rush me out of the bedroom since we were now well and truly late and sauntered down the stairs to the ballroom where my party was taking place.I’d barely entered the room before Caden rushed up to me, throwing his arms around my shoulder and doing a very terrible happy birthday song. I rolled my eyes and tried not to die of laughter.Through the cheers and festivities, I couldn’t help but keep looking over my shoulder, the distinct feeling of being watched, haunting me the entire night.Kiara’s POVIt was almost midnight and I was restless as hell. The urge to run was crazy, my wolf felt as uncontrollable as it had during my first full moon. The ball was in high gear, with guests dancing on the floor, bellies full, and drinks flowing through the room. Everyone seemed to be having fun, except me who seemed to be here only in body. My mind and soul seemed to be miles away in the heart of the forest and my body craved to meet them in earnest. Hands clamped around my shoulders from behind and I let out a squeal. A familiar masculine laugh came from behind me and my father turned me around and wished me yet another happy birthday with a big hug. I returned his hug weakly, trying to calm my racing heart. “Thanks, Dad.” I tried to paste on a smile but his laugh died down and he examined my face carefully. “Hey kiddo, you good?”I swallowed and nodded then thought better of it. Wouldn’t it be best to just let him know? I’ve always been able to talk about almost anything
Kiara’s POV“Oh hell no,” I exclaimed rather vehemently, rising to my feet and glaring at my father. “No way in hell is that happening!” I fumed, incredulous as to how we’d even gotten here so quickly. Dad sat straighter in his seat and sent a sideways glance toward the seat next to me, a direction I was trying desperately to ignore. “Kiara Hudson, What has gotten into you? Sit down!” He glared up at me. Grumbling under my breath, I returned to my seat, folding my hands across my chest and looking the other way, resentment, panic, and worst of all, desire, burning their way through my every sense. “You have been extremely rude this entire meeting and I can no longer ignore it. What’s gotten into you? We’re simply lucky the Clan King has not taken offense at any of your impertinence.” Offense my ass! He was the one in the wrong here and judging from the smug smile on his face at my barely concealed insults and huffs of disapproval, he knew it. I’d managed not to cuss him out after
Kiara’s POV“Dad. Come on. Do I really have to go?”Dad sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Yes Kiara. For the thousandth time. You do have to go. Come on. Please? For me?”I pouted and crossed my hands over my chest “Oh that’s just not playing fair.”He laughed. “We’ll you’ve not exactly being fighting fair yourself, missy. Giving me those puppy dog eyes since yesterday. It’s just gonna be for a week and then you’ll be back.”One week. An entire week. Alone. With him. Speak of the devil, Ivan strode towards us, hand in pockets. “Alright Damien. We have to get going if we wanna catch up with our appointments. Don’t worry, your daughter will be completely safe with me.”Dad gave him a look of utter seriousness. “She’d better be. Or the two of us will be having a less cordial interaction when next we see. Ivan merely smiled, revealing his fangs and turned to me. “Ready?”Ignoring him, I turned fully to face my dad. “Tell mom I love her and not to worry too much about me. Okay?”It wa
Kiara’s POVTwo hours later, Ivan had still not returned. My phone died shortly after he left and though there was power, my bags had yet to be brought up so I couldn’t plug it back on. I was bored but not enough to risk wandering outside the room at this time of the night when there were Vampires crawling all over this place. To make matters worse, I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast this morning. As a result, I was famished. Trust Ivan to be so inhospitable. Leaving me without food and locking me alone for two hours! I scoffed. Did he even have normal food in this place? Or did he get by on the blood of innocents and expect us all to do the same? I twiddled my thumbs for another hour before I could no longer tolerate the wait. How busy was he that he couldn’t at least check to make sure I had everything I needed. Like my fucking bags, especially when he’d all but barred me from coming out. Hopping from the bed, I went to the door, opening it, and creeping out into the hallwa
Ivan’s POVI shook my head at the man’s hapless scream, the jarring sound searing straight to my skull and making it ring. I could feel a heading coming on, precipitated by my hunger. I needed to feed as soon as possible. It had been far too long since I had my last meal. It may only be twenty four hours but I can’t remember the last time I went without blood for even two. I nodded at Archer, my second of sorts and he stepped forward, placing the hot iron rod over the man’s thighs. He screamed again, voice hoarse from hours of misuse and struggled against the ropes that tied him tightly to the chair. I rolled my eyes at his screams and stalked up to him. Gripping his short chop of stringy hair, I yanked his head back glaring down at him.“Stop that fucking whining before I really hurt you!” I hissed. He sobbed but clamped down on his screaming, making pathetic little noises like some wounded rodent. I shoved his head away in disgust. “Please!” He rasped, practically hyperventilating
Kiara’s POV“So, when do we get down to the things I was supposed to take a look at here.” I asked Ivan over breakfast the next morning. I was the only one touching the real food; eggs and bacon with toast, even though I didn’t eat much. Ivan contended himself with a glass of warm red blood. I was at least grateful he had the decency to not take it from the source in front of me. For many reasons, I didn’t know how I would handle that. I know he’d heard me, we were seated too close together with him at the head and I at his immediate right, for him to not. Yet he ignored what I said, languidly sipping his blood. I rolled my eyes and picked at my food. The table was long enough to seat twenty but everywhere else was empty. Like it had been yesterday, there were several platters of food and with only two places set. I’d seen no one so far but the maid who had escorted me back here and even she had disappeared immediately after.Again, the unusual quiet unnerved me and I thought about
Kiara’s POVIvan had been behaving for the past hour which was entirely surprising considering how much he made it a point to get under my skin. Like he’d promised, I’d had a run in the woods and even though he’d watched me shift against my wishes, it had been wonderful. I felt more refreshed than I’d been in days. My wolf was relaxed enough that she didn’t even react at the closeness of Ivan’s body in the back seat of the car as we rode back towards his mansion. Okay, maybe she noticed a little bit, but at least I didn’t feel like physically combusting due to his presence. I considered that a phenomenal win. The car stopped in front of the mansion and his driver opened his door. He stepped out and held out a hand for me. Rolling my eyes, I ignored his hand and slipped past him, the chuckle he let out as I walked ahead reverberating down my spine. I pulled short when I heard voices at the entrance, turning to Ivan with wide eyes. He strode towards me, hands in pockets and bent till
Kiara’s POV“So did he lock you up?” Caden asked from the other end of the face time. I shook my head. “I’m the one who didn’t want to go out. This place is crawling with vampires. I’m trying to do everything in my power to avoid them. I mean one of Ivan’s girlfriend’s almost attacked me the other day!” His eyes widened. “Almost attacked you? What happened?” I scoffed “Let’s just say my training paid off and I didn’t get jumped in my sleep.” Maybe I exaggerated a little bit, but everything else I was telling Caden was right on par. It was the evening of the next day and I had been bringing Caden up to speed on what had been happening here since I came. “Damn.” He muttered. “Yeah. It’s an absolute nightmare down here. And you should have seen them feeding on their victims. Those poor women.”“Were they humans or werewolves?”“Humans from what I could tell. So far, I seem to be the only wolf here.” That was another thing I worried about in light of Ivan’s threat. Wolves were social
Kiara’s POVI went to find my father immediately after his meeting with Ivan was over, not just curious, but anxious to find out what consensus had been reached. He didn’t seem surprised to see me, only letting out an exasperated sigh and gesturing for me to take a seat on the other side of his desk.“Well?” I said even before my ass had touched the chair. “What did you guys decide?”My father shrugged. “That he’ll return back to his manor and you’ll remain here with your family until such a time when you are interested in being with your mate.”I paused, my eyes bugging wide, disbelief coloring every inch of my features.“I’m sorry, what?” I said, shocked that such a thing was even possible. My father gave me a deadpan look.“You’re serious? Ivan really left like that?”I asked with a frown. I’d never known dad to be anything but concerning official affairs, but the thing he just said was so at odds with what I knew about the Vampire King that I immediately suspected foul play. Dad s
Ivan’s POVI stared coolly at Damien and the man stared back. Kiara hovered a few steps away from us, glancing nervously between us both.We were in his immaculately furnished study, having been summoned there by a maid after we had the refreshments Amelia provided. I respected their willingness to at least feed us before engaging in this confrontation. It would have sucked to do this with a headache caused by blood starvation.“Kiara. Leave us.” Damien rumbled lowly and predictably enough, she tried to argue with him, only cutting off when he sent her a glare.I chuckled, glad to see she wasn’t this combative with me alone and watched her with an amused, if slightly hungry gaze as she left the room. I was aware that Damien was watching me watch his daughter, but after missing her for more than forty eight hours, it was hard to let her out of my sight.I hadn’t expected her to give up on witnessing the discussion I was about to have with her father so easily but I needn’t have bothere
Kiara’s POVI scarfed down my food, barely managing to chew it completely before swallowing and stuffing my mouth with the next morsel. Conversation flowed around me but I ignored it all in favor of stuffing my mouth full with pasta and some heavenly meatballs.“Kiara come on. You’ll choke on that. You have got to slow down.”I slurped on the last of the spaghetti strands in my mouth and swallowed most of it before attempting to speak.“I wasn’t able to catch dinner last night.” I sent my mom a pointed look from across the table where she sat “Somebody held me up last night.”Mom primly dabbed at the corner of her mouth with a napkin.“Yes, it’s not because you went out for a two hour run and missed dinner is it?”She snarked back in such a haughty tone that I rolled my eyes. Deciding that I was too hungry to push the issue, I refocused my attention on my plate and kept leveling it down.Everyone was at the dining table, including my dad, Caden’s dad and both our moms. There were even
Kiara’s POVThere was someone in my room and it wasn’t any of the wolves I lived with. I lay completely still, keeping my eyes tightly shut and trying to make sure my breathing remained even.It was night time and everyone in the manor was fast asleep. Except for the intruder. And now me.I tried to think quickly of what I could do to get out of this potentially dangerous situation. My dagger was all the way over on the table at the far end of the room and I silently cursed myself for being so careless with my weapon when I was expecting something like this to happen. The person crept to my bed without making so much as a sound. I felt rather than heard the presence hovering above me. I waited, holding my breath until he came close enough and then I sprung into action.Pulling his hand, I dragged him down to the bed and flipped him before he hit the mattress so that he landed on his back with a grunt. In another moment, my hand was around his throat and I squeezed tightly, ignoring his
Kiara’s POV“Kiara? Kiara! Wake up!” I heard from deep within my slumber. I groaned and rolled over, not wanting to stop the Ivan filled dream I was having.I’d barely resettled into position when my warm duvet was suddenly ripped off my body.“Kiara Hudson! You get out of that bed this instant!” My mom yelling right over me was the last straw. The pleasant dream I’d been having disappeared in a flash as I was pulled back into the reality of wakefulness.“Mom. Come on. Five more minutes.” I whined much liked Caden had with me just yesterday. Unlike me however, my mom was not so benevolent.“No. Get your lazy behind up and get ready so we can go out.”“If you’re trying to rope me into another shopping trip you can forget it. I need to sleep.”I groaned and felt around my feet for the duvet, keeping my eyes closed in an attempt to trick my brain into falling back asleep. My mother smacked my hands away.“Ow!” I whined, eyes flying open to glare at her.She raised a brow “It wasn’t a requ
Kiara’s POV“Savez, come on. Keep your hands high enough so you can parry his thrust and block. Otherwise you’ll end up with a slit throat before we’re done here!”I yelled at one of the sparring groups currently battling fiercely on the training ground. The man in question did as I asked, holding his sword a bit higher and parrying his opponent’s next jab way more fluidly.“Good.” I grunted, moving past their group to the next. This pair were clearly still a bit green about the ears. It was clear from the way the awkwardly held their swords, as if it was too big for them. It made their knife clanging lack any power, force or even proper direction.I stepped up to them amused.“Grip it firmly, don’t clutch it like that.” I said helping one of the boys fix his fingers properly. The other mirrored the new position while the one I’d physically corrected flushed bright red. He looked shyly at me from under his lashes and I snorted. He could barely hold his sword up. What made him think he
Ivan’s POVI paced back and forth the length of my study, hands clamped behind my back, cursing ever so often and kicking at any of the poor furniture that got in my way. Lilith sat on one of the visitor’s chair, watching me pensively. Forty eight hours. It had been forty eight goddamn hours since I last saw her. I was going crazy. Was she thinking about me? The way I thought about her? This obsessive, compulsive and almost destructive way? Where was she right now? Was she laughing and happy? While I writhed here in agony, wasting away for all she cared? Was she with that stupid little werewolf friend of hers who touched her far too familiarly in ways that made me want to rip his arms off? All I’d done since she got here was spoil her. So why the fuck was she not here!“Goddamit!” I swore, exploding all of a sudden and whirling around to face her.“I can’t take it anymore. I need her back! Today!”“Ivan. Come on. You can give her a bit more time. You’re acting like two weeks when it’s
Kiara’s POVI drew open the curtains the window letting light filter into my room, the golden rays falling directly on the bed where Caden slept. He scrunched his face up in his sleep before simply turning to the other side and pulling the duvet over his face. Amused an undeterred, I marched to the bed, pulling the duvet off him. “Hey. No fair.” He grumbled sleepily. “Yes it is. It’s already past ten AM.” He grumbled something that sounded suspiciously like an insult and then chucked a pillow at me. I laughed, easily dodging it. “Your pillow tricks won’t work on me. Get the hell up.”“Come on mom. Five more minutes.”I let out an exaggerated sigh “Fine.” I said benevolently. I’d had my bath when he slept and even dried my hair. I was almost fully dress when I tried to wake him and he still didn’t budge. Most of my good clothes were abandoned at Ivan’s mansion so all I was left with in my closet were the not so nice ones. I put on a T-shirt over my faded jeans and pulled my hair i
Ivan’s POVI leaned against the back of my chair, thoroughly amused despite myself not to mention a tad impressed at my woman. My sweet, fiery Kiara. She didn’t cease to amaze me that wolf. Just when I thought I had all my bases covered and there was no way she could possibly get around them, she went ahead and did exactly that. I wasn’t sure why she insisted on playing this cat and mouse game but I couldn’t say I wasn’t intrigued. After all, I did so love to chase. She couldn’t possibly think I would let her escape that easily could she? Surely she knows I will be coming after her, very soon too. I wondered how she would react to the plans I was making to get her back. The thought of her cute face, scrunched up in a scowl and alight with fury made me chuckle. I couldn’t wait to see what she did. A frown marred my face when I thought of the man who had helped her escape. A growl neigh left my lips. He was a problem I didn’t appreciate. In other words I fucking hated his guts. He’
