Chapter 20

Author: Gina Cinq
Winston's brows twisted into a frown. He gazed calmly at Millie as if he agreed that she was a shameless and manipulative woman.

Anger and bitterness brewed deep within Millie.

She no longer cared what Winston thought of her. Still, she felt like a fool because the latter kept questioning her. With a bitter smile, she snarled, "Why don't we just tell your grandma about our divorce if you think I'm that despicable?"

"You wouldn't dare!" Winston stomped forward.

He could tell from Selma's actions that she cared a lot about Winston and Millie's marriage. It would only cause Selma more trouble if they told her they wanted to get divorced now. Winston refused to make any mistakes before Selma's birthday celebration.

Millie chuckled. "Why wouldn't I dare? Winston, get one thing clear. Selma is your biological grandmother, not mine!"

She had only refrained from telling Selma about it because Selma treated her well. Millie didn't want Selma to fall ill if she told the latter about the divor

Terrence never raised his voice at Millie, but today, he was extra harsh on her.Millie's family seemed distressed upon realizing she failed to get divorced."Dad, can I not go? I swear to you guys I'll divorce Winston for sure." Millie reeled in her stubbornness.Terrence didn't answer, which meant it was a definite no."But won't my date mind it if I haven't gotten divorced yet?" Millie pouted."He won't!" Terrence's response came with an unwavering confidence.Millie's lips tugged into a thin line. She wondered if her blind date was as dimwitted as Henry for willingly taking her on a date, even after knowing her husband was Winston. Whoever that man was must've lost his mind."Millie, you know this man, and he admires a lot. You two complement each other well. Can't you do as I say just this once?" Terrence's tone softened slightly.Upon hearing Terrence ask her to comply with this once, Millie realized she had been a poorly behaved child all this while. After all, what Terr

Millie arrived at Purple Aster Restaurant for her blind date the next evening.Millie crossed her arms over her chest. She stood before the window and gazed at the scenery. She wore a sexy white one-shoulder dress. "Ms. Caldwell?" A man's voice rang out from behind. It sounded a little familiar.Millie's eyes rounded when she turned and saw who it was. Shock filled her face as she asked, "Mr. Harrison?"She couldn't believe her blind date was Simon Harrison. It was no wonder Terrence got all emotional the other night when she told him she had saved Patrick's life.Simon's lips curved into a soft smile as he carried himself with gentleness and elegance. "Yep, it's me."He politely pulled out Millie's chair before motioning her to sit.Millie's shocked gaze remained on him."Are you that surprised?" Simon shifted nervously upon being stared at by her. He was a little older than Millie, so the latter was still a young lady in his eyes. Now that he saw her up close, he realized s

Millie noticed the solemn expression on Winston's face after listening to Joanna's words. Suddenly, a thought came to her. With a smile, Millie walked over to Simon and linked her arm with his. She looked up at Simon with her enchanting eyes and asked, "Mr. Harrison, since Ms. Lowell thinks we'd make a good couple, should we try to go on a date?"Simon narrowed his eyes at Winston and Joanna. Winston looked completely dejected. Suddenly, Simon seemed to understand where Millie was coming from and he went along. He put his arm around Millie's slender waist and pulled her close. "Ms. Caldwell, are you saying you agree to let me date you?" His deep voice sounded as beautiful as a cello.Millie nodded. She looked flirtatious and charming as she fiddled with Simon's tie.A smile spread across Simon's face. He deliberately leaned close to Millie's ear and whispered, "I'm greatly honored."Simon glanced up at Winston, who had become extremely grim. There seemed to be countless blades hi

Julia was busy preparing for the Harrisons' arrival."The Harrisons are coming over for their first visit, Mills. Why are you dressed like that?""Vera, we need more fruits! The fruits aren't enough.""Mills, hurry up and change. Those jeans aren't suitable. Put on a dress!""Listen to your mother." Terrence nudged Millie, who was wearing only a white shirt and jeans, to change her clothes. He didn't think her outfit was right for the occasion.Millie looked at herself in the mirror with a frown. She couldn't understand why her outfit was considered inappropriate. In her eyes, she looked great no matter what she wore.As Millie was about to go upstairs to change, a voice came from the door. "Madam Julia, the Harrisons are here!"Julia hurriedly took Millie by the arm and led her out of the house. "There's no time to change. They're already here."Millie was surprised. Terrence and Julia usually weren't so anxious about welcoming guests. It seemed like the Harrisons' visit was p

"Please, let me show my gratitude!" Patrick insisted."Well... if we don't have any other plans, how about going golfing?" Terrence suggested abruptly.Patrick quickly nodded. "Sounds great! Mills, do you play golf?"Millie shook her head. She was talented in many things but golf wasn't one of them. Learning to play golf took patience, and she had none of that, except when she was trying to date Winston.Patrick was delighted to learn that Millie couldn't play golf. "Perfect! Simon's a great golfer! You should let him teach you!"With a nod to Millie, Simon responded, "If you're up for it."Millie saw how happy Terrence was. She didn't want to disappoint him, so she agreed. The biggest golf course in Yerwick City was located on the outskirts of town. Simon drove them there. During the journey, Terrence and Patrick talked fondly about old times and had a nice conversation. Millie sat in the front seat, occasionally snacking and chatting with Simon. There were numerous luxury c

Winston wore a casual gray outfit, and he seemed to be in a relaxed mood. However, his expression quickly turned sour at the sight of Millie. When he saw Simon standing behind Millie and holding her hands, his face twisted uglily.Joanna was shocked to see Millie and Simon there. All she wanted was to be alone with Winston.Simon released Millie's hands and stepped aside."What a coincidence," said Winston sarcastically.Millie gave him a disapproving look before replying, "Yeah, it's quite a coincidence, Mr. Greer."Winston glared at her, annoyed by her use of the term "Mr. Greer."Millie flashed Simon a sweet smile and suggested, "Simon, shall we carry on?"Winston narrowed his eyes. He hadn't expected Millie to address Simon so intimately after their blind date yesterday."Sure, let's have another game," Simon replied with a gentle smile."You know I can't beat you," Millie protested.Simon gave her a playful grin. "That's true. But you will owe me a favor if I do beat you

Sensing the tension in the air, Joanna immediately jumped in, "Winston, why do you always argue with Mills when you see her?"Winston looked away. His face was clouded with anger.Joanna forced herself to smile and added, "You two were lovers once. Even if you no longer have feelings for her, Mills is still a woman... Can't you just leave her be?"Millie became irritated hearing Joanna's words. While Joanna seemed to be advising Winston to ease the tension, she was actually mocking Millie. Millie knew exactly if Winston still had feelings for her, and she didn't appreciate Joanna being a busybody.Joanna approached Millie with a friendly tone of voice. "What a coincidence to run into you here, Mills! How about a friendly game of golf? The loser must do a dare. What do you say?"Millie smirked as she realized that Joanna was once again playing the role of mediator.Joanna, who knew Millie was good at almost everything but golf, blinked and feigned ignorance. "Mills, do you have an

"Joanna, aren't you going overboard?" Simon asked immediately."That's the point. It wouldn't be a challenge if it weren't daring, would it?" Joanna wiggled her wrist and flashed a smile at Simon, trying to appear innocent.Simon frowned at her. He clenched his right hand into a fist. He hadn't interacted much with Joanna before, and now he was beginning to see how unreasonable she could be."Fine," Millie said as she stepped forward to stand next to Joanna."You don't have to accept her challenge, Mills," Simon reminded her.Millie was never one to back down from a challenge. She meant it when she said she would do something. She raised an eyebrow and replied, "It's just a kiss. What's there to be afraid of? It's not like I haven't kissed someone before."Winston's expression turned colder as he narrowed his eyes. He wondered about the meaning behind her words. He called out, "Millie."Millie looked at him with a serene expression."Are you sure? Do you really want to compete

While in the hospital, Millie rubbed her arms to keep warm. Then, the person on the bed woke up.Millie turned her head and looked at the person on the hospital bed. Winston's eyes were dull and showed signs of exhaustion. Their eyes met, and neither of them said a word. The nurse entered and saw that Winston was awake, so she patiently asked about his condition. He just kept looking at Millie without saying anything.Millie glanced at the nurse, signaling that she could continue with her work. Winston seemed fine now."You're not allowed to drink anymore," Millie said, her voice calm and indifferent. He closed his eyes, turned his head away, and didn't look at her again.Millie frowned and asked, "What do you mean by turning your head?"Winston remained silent, unable to speak because of the tightness in his throat.Millie poured a glass of water and asked him, "Would you like some water?"He still remained silent.Millie grew impatient and said, "Then I'll call Eli to take

Everly was becoming frustrated.Thomas exclaimed, "I said, Mills!""Yes, you're talking about Mills. And then? What about her?" Everly was extremely confused. She picked up her phone to check the time—it was already 3:00 am.She was about to lose it. From New Year's Eve till now, she did nothing but take care of Thomas."Dad, why don't we just go to sleep?" Everly didn't want to listen anymore.Whatever it was, she would be nice to Millie and not go up against her.She didn't like Millie before, but that was simply because she disliked how obsessed Millie was with romantic relationships."Oh! Ah!" Thomas suddenly started grumbling as he threw back the blanket. "Why can't you understand?"He was getting agitated.Everly was also getting extremely agitated. What exactly did she need to understand? He wasn't even speaking loud enough."I mean your sister! Millie!" Thomas s

Thomas had already thrown up, yet he still claimed he hadn't."You're drinking so much even though you can't handle it!" Everly shouted."What are you saying? "I'll go get your medicine for you. Wait a moment." Millie intended to get the medicine from the bedside table. But then, Winston grabbed her arm. His palms were sweaty, and when he held her hand, it felt so hot it was as if he might burn her.Millie looked down at him.Winston looked up at her face, worried that if he let go, she might disappear. However, he knew very well that Millie wanted to leave, and he couldn't stop her."Millie, do you really have to give up on me?" Winston asked again, seeming determined to get an answer.Millie furrowed her brows, breathing heavily."Do you have to?" He looked at her. "Hmm?"Millie felt her heart tighten, and she just couldn't bring herself to say, "I have to let you go.""Winston," she called to him.Winston had no more strength left in him, as if he couldn't wait any longer to hear those words from her.He suddenly bent over and fell to the ground.Millie paused for a moment, then she quickly crouched down. Millie tightened her grip on the doorknob and turned to look at Winston. He stood next to the coffee table, his hands dangling awkwardly at his sides. The expression on his face seemed profoundly sorrowful. Although they were close, it felt as if a huge ocean stood between them when he looked at her, making it impossible for him to bridge the gap.Winston made a slight groaning sound, licking his lips and breathing heavily. His body was also swaying a bit. His stomach felt extremely uncomfortable, churning violently as if he might throw up at any moment. What bothered him even more was the comment Millie had just made. She said, "Let's end this."End it? But how would they just end it? Then were her seven years over just like that? Did his guilt and regret count for anything? She could move on from him, love someone else, and marry them. But what about him? He could never forgive himself for the rest of his life…Could they just end it?"Millie. Tell me, how are we supposed to

"Listen." Millie bit her lip but finally mustered up the courage to speak. "Let's end this between us."During those years with him, she caused her family a lot of worry and concern. She no longer wanted her family to worry about her.Or perhaps, she had become scared. She didn't want to gamble with her feelings anymore."Winston, I admit defeat. I don't have the courage to go through this with you again." Millie's voice was choked with emotion as she struggled to hold back her sadness while saying this.Winston instinctively reached for her hand."Millie, you promised me. You said you'd give me a chance. Why?" His eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, and his voice was so hoarse it seemed like he could barely speak."There's no reason. The new year has begun, and I hope you get better. Don't come looking for me anymore." Millie pulled away from Winston's hand, turned around, and got ready to leave. He suddenly hugged Millie tightly and said, "Don't…"Winston's voice seemed to pierce

The road was busy, with many people out to watch fireworks, while others were heading home.Winston looked to the driver's side, his gaze fixed on Millie.Millie could sense that he was watching her, but she kept avoiding eye contact. Her mind was preoccupied with the messages her dad had sent.Let him go… The question was, could she give up on him?Millie furrowed her brow and rested her hand on her forehead, deep in thought."Did I make you hate me…?" Winston's raspy voice suddenly sounded next to her ear.Millie looked over at him with confusion."Does my drinking make you hate me?" he asked again, just like a child afraid of upsetting Millie."No." Millie shook her head.Despite having drunk too much, he still made an effort to pay at

After the video call ended, Millie placed her phone on the table.Thomas said to Millie, "Hahaha! Mills, look, he can't handle his drink!"Having been the son-in-law of the Caldwell family for three years, I only just found out that he can't hold his liquor."Millie gave a wry smile. This statement seemed to be a double-edged sword. For three years, he hadn't visited the Caldwell family even once. Winston was truly ruthless at that time.Winston quickly explained to Millie, "Millie, I haven't had too much. I can still drink, honestly."His face was completely flushed, and it was clear that his speech was slurred. The two of them had already finished a bottle of vodka.Thomas was even ready to switch to a different type of alcohol.Thomas had spent many years away from home and was quite a heavy drinker. His drinking ability was different from that of Winston.Winston could ask Eli to drink on his behalf if he didn't want to, but if Thomas was trying to win resources for Rach

At the dining table, Thomas and Winston started drinking vodka. The TV was showing this year's New Year Gala while Millie was quietly eating pierogi. She hadn't had homemade pierogi for three years, and they tasted so good. It felt like being back in her childhood, celebrating the New Year with her family. That was what made the festival truly special.Millie looked at her grandparents with a constant smile on her face. She felt happier than she had ever been before. She wished her parents were here too. Oh, those two…Just as she was thinking about this, her phone rang. It was Terrence calling.Millie answered the call without saying a word and pointed the camera toward Thomas. This year, Thomas had no one to drink with, so he turned to Winston for company.Terrence was lounging in the sun when he caught sight of Winston. His eyes widened in surprise, and he immediately set down his juice."Who is that? Am I seeing this right?" Terrence sat up straight, his voice filled with
