ANNA
I walk into the station. "What's up, bitches?"
The last few days have been a Rollercoaster of emotions, but today I decided to just push past and move on.
I'm greeted with claps on the back and high fives for nailing Karver.
I head for Drake's office. "Bossman. How's it going?" I walk in and sink into a chair at his desk across from him.
He raises a brow. "You seem better." He turns to his computer.
I adjust my seat. "Yeah. I had a lot of shit to work through, but I think I'm okay now."
He folds his hands on his desk. "Anna. I know this Karver take down opened some wounds. We have some great people you can talk to if you need it."
I smirk. "I don't need therapy, Drake."
He sat back and folded his arms. "Not therapy, Anna. Just someone who can talk with you. In private. Just to make sure you're all sorted."
"I'm fine. Really. Just want to get back to normal." I rest my elbow on the arm of the chair and place my fingers on my temple.
His mouth ticks up. "Ok. Well. I won't stop you from working, but if you need anything, just come to me."
He turned to his computer as I got up to leave. "Oh, before you go..." He pulled an envelope out of a drawer and tossed it to me. "This came for you today. It's from the security unit. Anything I should know?"
I looked confused. Picking up the envelope and reading my name typed and the security unit name and address in the corner. "No. I don't know why they'd send me anything."
I open the envelope and pull out the letter.
As I read it, my eyes go wide.
Drake looks concerned. "Anna? What is it?"
I look up at him and toss the letter to him. Concern, confusion and a bit of anger fill my face. "I've been reassigned."
"What?" Drake picks up the letter and reads it. ".....by order of Alpha Damian for your heroic efforts in the capture of Cole Karver......Anna....this is great!" He smiles. "I'm mean I'll miss you around here, but this will be good for you."
I was in disbelief. "Drake! This is horrible! I won't do it. I can't be one of the alphas lackeys. No."
He peruses the letter again. "Looks like you don't have a choice. The Alpha wants you. You can't say no."
"Fuck." I hang my head, my hands on my hips.
"According to this, you report to recruitment at 0800 tomorrow morning. So I guess you can head home. No night shift for you."
"Ugh. I need a drink." I rub my forehead.
Drake smiles. "Hey, it could be worse. You could have my job."
I laugh. "No thanks."
"Bye, Anna." He leans back in his chair. His voice sounding a little sad.
"Later, hardass." I shoot him a two finger salute and walk out of his office for the last time.
****
Fuck. The security unit. Damn it. Working with the fucking robots. They aren't gonna like me at all. Maybe I'll get kicked out.
I pack my pack, and load my saddle bags. I should text Michael, but I don't expect this assignment will be very long and we can get all this mess behind us.
I drive the hour out to the Security Unit center. It's an extremely large base of operations. Clean, ridged. Housing over 3000 shifters from various packs.
It sits on Falcon Ridges west border. Caledons security unit center sits on the other side housing a further 2000 shifters.
I park in front of the recruitment center. And walk up the steps. Wearing my chaps, jeans, riders jacket and white t shirt with my hair in a high ponytail, I stuck out like a sore thumb.
Some soldiers walking by stopped and watched me enter the building. Both were jacked wearing tight blue t-shirts and blue cargos. I shot a little smirk their way and they smiled back. The one slapping the chest if the other in approval.
I giggle to myself as I pull open the glass door and walk in.
I walk into the lobby. It's cold, stark white with a black floor. There's a long counter opposite the door. I walk up, take my pack off my shoulder and drop it on the floor and it lands with a thud.
There's a solider with practically no neck, off to the side, rifling through papers.
He hears my pack hit the floor and looks at me.
I smile.
He stands, chest puffed out. Not amused. He walks over to me. "You here to report?" His voice was very stern and monotone.
"Yep." I lean my elbow on the counter.
He looks and raises an eyebrow. He sits down at his computer. "Name?"
I lean on the counter to try and see his screen. "Anna Riker."
He turns and glares at me and I back off raising my hands in surrender.
He turns back, typing. "You're five minutes late." He grumbles.
I snicker. "Sorry. Traffic."
Again he glares at me. "Grab your pack and come with me."
He leads me to a door to enter the facility.
I follow him down a white hallway. Everything is so clean and polished. Like it would be the end of the world if a tiny smudge was found on the wall or something.
He leads me down another corridor with doors on either side. He stops, rigidly turns to a door and opens it. "Have a seat. Bartley will be with you shortly."
I look at him arrogantly "Bartley? Seriously?"
He doesn't acknowledge my comment, just presses me to sit.
I sigh and walk in. Plopping my pack on the floor of the tiny office. I sit in front of a tiny desk. There's a line of file cabinets on the wall opposite me.
A few minutes later, a soldier came in. Blonde perfect cut hair, piercing blue eyes and muscles for days. He's carrying a file, reading it as he walks.
He sits down without saying a word. He types on his computer. The silence is deafening.
"Agent Riker." He finally says.
"Yep." I say leaned back in the chair.
"It's nice to finally meet you. There's been a lot of talk about you this last week."
I lean forward. "All good I hope." The corner of my mouth raises.
He nods. Clearly we aren't into small talk.
He clears his throat. "Great work on the Karver arrest. He's provided a lot of great Intel to us this far.'
I raise my brow. "You guys have him?"
"Of course." He says not looking up from his computer.
I lean on my knees. "Well, what has he said?"
"I'm sorry. I'm not at liberty to discuss details of an ongoing investigation." He still doesn't look at me.
I sit up. "But he's my suspect?"
He turned. "He was your suspect. Now, he's our prisoner. You did a great job in his capture, but he belongs to us now."
I flop back into my seat. "That's bullshit." I say under my breath.
He raised his brow. "What was that?"
"Nothing." I grumble.
He smirks. Picks up the file he walked in with and stands. He opens the file and starts reading while walking around toward me. "One week suspension for insubordination, two week suspension for ignoring a direct order. One month paid leave for excessive force....." He dropped the file on his desk and leans on the edge of the desk in front of me. Crossing his arms. "....and there's more. A lot more."
He continues. "Now, I don't know why the alpha would even think someone like you would be good enough for the security unit, but he does. This...whatever this is..." He trails his finger in the air up and down me, "....isn't gonna fly here. We don't deal in suspensions or paid leave. We deal with actual punishments. So unless you check this bad girl attitude of yours, I see a lot of punishment headed your way."
My face goes cocky. "You gonna make a good girl outta me, soldier?"
He smiled. "Come with me."
He lead me out of his office and out the back of the building. Recruits were training. Running everywhere, fighting.
He lead me to the barracks. We walk into where a woman with red hair is sitting. She's pretty, very fit.
"Donovan?" Bartley calls.
The woman stands at attention. "Yes, sir."
He leads me in. "I have some fresh meat for you.......this is Riker."
"Riker, yes. They told me you were coming. We have your bunk and your locker ready."
I cock a brow. "My bunk?"
She comes around and stands with her hands behind her back. "Yes. This is your sleeping quarters with the other recruits."
I look between the two of them. "Your kidding right?"
She furrows her brow. "No. I'm not...kidding." I've clearly offended her.
Bartley pipes up. "Riker here, has a bit of an attitude. We need to adjust it for her. When she dressed in uniform send her to Stevens." He turned and leaned into me. "He'll deal with this bad girl." He smiles turns to Donovan and leaves.
Donovan stands and points out the door.
I'm shown to my bunk at the back of the room and I toss my pack on it. There's around 30 bunks in here.
On my bed is a uniform. Blue tshirt and a pair of blue cargos. Also a pair of socks and military boots.
I hold up the shirt. "For fucks sake. Really?"
Donovan crosses her arms. "Showers are over there. Get changed and meet me at the door in 5 mins." She barked. Spinning on her heels and leaving.
I shake my head and go to change.
I saunter out and head for the door. I feel like a total douche.
She looks me over and barks. "Tuck in that shirt, soldier!"
I glare at her, sigh and tuck in this God awful t shirt.
"Follow me." She struts out the door, marching to the training field I passed by earlier.
We march, with me trying to keep up behind, until we get to a tall, black haired man standing looking over the recruits.
We were about to reach him when he put his hand to the side of his mouth and yelled. "DAVIS!" A young soldier, who had just got knocked on his ass, looked our way. He got up, brushed himself off and jogged to the awaiting man who was waving him
Davis stopped and stood at attention. "Yes, sir!" He exclaimed.
The man put his hand behind Davis' neck and pulled him close. He raised a finger to his face. "Quit fucking around out there, solider. If I see that again, you won't sleep for a week, YOU GET ME?"
Davis looked clearly scared. His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. "Sir. Yes, sir!"
The man let go of Davis' head. "GO!"
Davis ran back to his partner while the man sighed and shook his head. "I swear they get worse every year." He grumbled.
"Sir. I have a new recruit for you." Donovan stood at attention while I stood with my arms crossed and a foot out the side. "Stevens, this is Riker....." She glanced at me. "I think you'll have fun breaking this one."
He walked over to me with his hands on his hips. "You have attitude, I see."
I smirked at him. "And you have anger issues."
His jaw ticked as he challenged me. He walked close. Sticking his face in mine. "Little girl, you haven't seen me angry. Now, get your pretty, little ass on the track and give me 40 laps."
My brow furrowed. "What?!"
"Make that 50!" He barked.
"You can't be seri..." I stood up straight.
"You want 60?!" His eyes flared.
My shoulders dropped and I backed off. "No." I grumbled.
"No what?" He glared.
"No, sir." I grit, my eyes narrowed.
"Hit the track, soldier." He points to the track.
I roll my eyes, grumble and run off to the track to start my laps. I can't fucking believe this bullshit. How the hell did this happen?
After my 50 some odd laps, I trot to the grass and flop on the ground. My muscles are burning, my breath is heaving and I'm dying for a cold beer. The sun is beating down and I cover my eyes. A large shadow looms over me and I move my arm.
"On....your....FEET!" Steven yells.
I get up. Dead from exhaustion.
He's glaring hard. "Tired?"
I nod, trying to catch my breath still.
"WHAT WAS THAT?" He screams.
"Yes, sir!" I manage.
He crosses his arms. "I don't think your tired enough. See that circuit over there?" I look around him. It's huge. Got to be at least 25 different exercises.
"Yes, sir." I pant.
"Run it.....ten times."
"Oh, Come on...." I whine.
"15."
I sigh. "Yes, sir." And I run to the circuit.
Please let this be a fucking nightmare.
At the end of the day, I'm literally dead. I find my bunk. I'm sore all over. I need sleep.
I just laid down, when Donovan came over. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Going to sleep." I lay looking at her.
She stands rigid. "ON YOUR FEET!"
I grumble quietly and stand up.
"You're to report to the mess hall." She smiles. "You have dish duties for the next 4 hours.'
A whining look came across my face.
"Do we have a problem with that?"
Defeated I quietly say, "no, mam."
"Good." She points to the door. "GO."
"Yes, mam." And I trudge to the door. Wishing I'd just wake up.
RIVERI check in with my superior who tells me that I'm to report to the recruitment center.Ok. It's weird, since I'm not a team leader and haven't haven't been involved with training at all.I head to Bartleys office. I knock on the door and wait."Come." I hear from inside.I open the door and step in. "Reporting for duty, sir." I stand at his desk at attention.Bartley smiles and stands. "At ease."I relax."Blake. I'm glad to see you. I didn't think Oakley would hand you over when I put in the request."I looked at him confused. "Request, sir?"He walked over and put a hand on my shoulder. "Son. What you did during the Karver operation was outstanding. Organizing those teams and assisting border to bring this badass down....just what we need down here."I looked at him. "Sir, I'm not sure I understand.
ANNAAfter breakfast, I walk across the barrack yard, heading for the training field.Yesterday, with River, was spectacular to say the least. It was passionate, but urgent at the same time. Like we both just needed it right now, but didn't want to rush past every moment. I've never felt like that before. No. That's a lie. The night with Michael in the clearing felt almost the same, but something was missing. I can't put my finger on it.Which brings me to my dilemma. After I left River, my thoughts drifted to Michael. He confession of love. My feelings for him are still there, even though, there's definitely something between River and I.Then there's this whole security unit thing. River is my superior. And while, I couldn't give a shit, he does. The unit means a lot to him. I don't want my bullshit to screw up his life. So, is what we might have worth
MICHAELCome Sunday morning, I've had a chance to cool off.Yeah, I went off the rails. But, like I said, I'm not going down without a fight.I've believed Anna was mine for five years. Even during her pairing with David. I've tasted her, breathed her in, seen her in my dreams. But she's always just out of reach. Like some wicked game with my heart. I'm not supposed to love her, but I can't help it.I have to win her over.I suppose it's time to have a real conversation. I walk up to her door and knock.A few moments later, she answers. Looking like a total angel in a white sweater and jeans. She leans on her door and crosses her arms. "What are you doing here, Michael?"I put my hand on the frame by her head. "I just want to talk, Ok?"She pushes off the door and goes inside waving me in. I shut the door behind me.We cross the living room in
ANNABeep, beep, beepI open my eye to sunlight pouring in through the windows. My alarm screaming to wake up.I reach over and tap my screen. River squeezes his arm around my waist tighter and growls. After our make up in the rain, we came back to my place and had a night filled with hot, sexy make up sex. But now, it's Monday morning and we have to report back to the unit.I smile and spin around in his arm.His eyes are still closed and he pulls me closer. "Too early." He mumbles.I plant tiny kisses on his nose. "Wake up, sexy." I whisper. "We've got to get to work."He opens his sleepy eye. "No." Closes it and pulls me tighter.I giggle. Giving more small kisses. "Come on. Wake up."He let's out a growl and pulls me on top of him."Screw that. We're staying here all day." He nuzzles my neck, running his fingers up
RIVERAfter checking in and stopping by the barracks, I grab my training schedule and head across the lot to the field where my recruits await.I'm looking over my paperwork as I walk when a large arm falls on my shoulder."Hey buddy, how was the weekend." Blade slaps my chest and winks.I stop and shrug him off, smiling. "Good. Well, it got better."He pulls his long, black hair into a ponytail. The unit wanted him to cut it off, but he basically told them that anyone who comes at him with scissors is a dead man. He's a big guy, so they let it slide.I arch a brow. "What are you doing here anyway?"He stuffs his hands in his pockets and shrugs. "They were looking for volunteers for recruit training, so I put in. It gets me away from the stupid border shadow and I get to troll you about your fucked up love life." He elbows my arm, chuckling.I flip through more p
ANNAFor the afternoon session, we were lead to a field at the opposite end of the barracks. One that held a massive obstacle course.Nets, bridges, ladders, walls....everything.River and Blade stood in front of the whole group. Waiting for us to settle as we check out the massive run.Blade steps forward. "Alright!" He yelled. "As you can see, we have a nice challenge for you!"He walks back and forth. "This course will challenge your strength and your mind. You will run it in three's. Each solider will have five minutes or less to complete the run. Fail to do so......." He stops and faces us. "You get back in line and do it again until you do. So, don't fuck up. If you do fuck it up along the way, you must return to the lines and do it over."River stepped forward. "Three line formation!"We all broke off in three lines at the start."When I
RIVERI hit my alarm and roll onto my back in bed. The morning light is just breaking through.I scrub a hand down my face and pull the blanket off.I'm not even awake five fucking minutes and my wolf is running circles in mind. He's bright eyed and bushy tailed. Just itching to see Anna today."Fuck, buddy." I murmur to myself as I sit on the edge of my bed, rubbing my head.He starts incessently howling and whining.I shake my head. "Jesus. Ok. Fuck." I get up and throw some track pants on. He needs a run.I grab a Hoodie and don't bother with a shirt. I have about an hour before I have to report for duty. I'll run him out quickly so I can start my fucking day in peace.I get to the woods, strip off my clothes and call the wind to shift. It swirls around me as my body hits the ground and rearranges into my b
ANNAIt's been three days since I broke my leg and finally I get this irritating thing off.I know I'm whining. Humans have to spend weeks in their casts, but as a shifter, healing for more then a day is a complete piss off.My leg is now good as new. I don't even have a scar where the bone pierced my skin. This will definitely be lesson learned.I should probably go find River as he's been looking stressed for days now. He definitely didn't like that I hurt myself, but he seemed agitated. When he kissed me yesterday, it was like he was taking a dose of medicine for whatever was ailing him. Not that I minded, I mean he's a mind blowing kisser, I'm just curious as to why he's so fevered all of sudden. It's lunch time when I'm freed from my cast. I immediately link River."Where are you?""Hey, Baby, I'm in the dining hall.""Can you get away? My cast is off."
ANNA I swallow nervously as I look out on the crowd of thousands of heads staring at. Alpha Andrews is at the podium. He's talking about the victory and Torrents demise. Words of encouragement and celebration filled the air on the training field of the Falcon Ridge Security Unit. River is sitting beside me, in a chair on a stage. His fingers laced with mine. Like he can sense my nervousness, he looks to me and gives my hand a squeeze. He smiles warmly when my eyes meet his. I smile back. The ceremony was to honor those that made our victory over the Dragons possible. "Anna Riker. Can you stand over here please?" Alpha Andrews waves me over to him. I stand, straightening my uniform. I walk over and stand at attention facing him. He's holding a box. "For your unmeasured bravery, emmense courage and strength you had to kill the Alpha of Dragons, we would like to present to you the Medal of Honor. Wear it with pride." He takes the medal out of the box and pins it t
ANNA "River. Where are you taking me?" I giggle as he covers my eyes and leads me through the hallways of the pack house. "Almost there." I can tell he's smiling. We stop. He uncovers my eyes. I'm standing in front two large wooden doors. I look at River confused. "Open them." He says quietly. I grasp the doorknobs and swing the large doors open. I gasp. The dome shaped room is covered in soft white candles. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling in books and artifacts. Paintings of past Alphas grace it's walls. Picture windows show the forest outside. On the floor, is a white fur rug in front of a stone fireplace. Wood crackles and burns while flames dance in it. A beautifully set table for two wait with dinner. We just got back from the ball and River set up this surprise. I suck in a
RIVER "To good times and good mates!" Franco raises his glass to the group of men in the common room of the White Rock packhouse. We all clink our glasses and bottles. Blade walks in. He has his black hair pulled back, wearing a black tux. We're all in tuxes. We decided that since the ball is here in White Rock, we'd all get ready here at the packhouse and go to the ball together. Of course, we men are all waiting on the women. Michael comes in. "Looking good, guys." He's smiling in his own tux. His brown hair tossed but nicely done. I crane my neck to look at him behind me, then turn. Eying him up and down. "You clean up nice." I joke. He smirks. "I have my moments. I'm just glad your dad let me go. Though tomorrow I guess I face the music." His smile fades a bit. I put my hand on his shoulder. "I have
ANNAIt's been three days since the news of the ball being moved to White Rock. With most of the moles in Falcon Ridge Prison, we've been free to plan and talk about the battle. There's been a question about why it's taking so long to get a plan from the higher ups.Well, today, we hear it.They have us all outside. Two thousand strong. Even the new recruits are here. What a time to join the unit. It looks like some are now unsure of their decision. I don't blame them. Barely over two weeks into training and you're thrown to war. If we didn't need the bodies, they could sit this one out. There's a stage and a loud speaker set up. The higher ups are standing on the stage. Alpha Edwards and Alpha Eric are missing. I wonder if they were moles too.Alpha Andrews is addressing us."Good morning.&n
RIVER I kiss Anna bye as we separate for the morning. It's Monday, the place is a buzz of the Blue Moon Ball just a week away. I'm internally freaking out as I walk past all the happy faces. The few that know what's going on, shoot me looks as they pass. I cruze through the halls, heading to the trainers office to pick up my week's itinerary, when Zeke rounds the corner almost knocking me on my ass. He looks panicked. I stand. Pretending to look confused, though I know, he's most likely heard about the take down that's already started. "Hey, man." I smile. This time it's almost a smile filled with satisfaction to see him so scared. "What's up?" He looks around. "Uh, nothing. I...uh...have to go." He pushes past me and I grab his arm. "Why the hurry? What's going on?" I stare him down. He looks at my hand on his arm and shrugs it off.
MICHAEL"What time is it?" I send out a mindlink.I'm pacing back and forth across a dark alley way. The same alley way, Adrian threatened Anna in.I run my fingers through my hair with one hand while nervously shaking out the other as I walk.Anna answers. She's up the street, in an alley."It's only a few minutes since the last time you asked, Michael."River jumps in. He's in an alley across the street."Mike, stop fucking pacing."I shake my head."He's late. I don't like it. This doesn't feel right..."Anna links again."Michael relax.""Relax." I chuckle to myself. "The guys a raging lunatic and they want me to relax."River links."You didn't have a problem with him when you sold us out?""River!!" Anna scolds."That was different." I link"How? How was it different?" Ri
RIVER The shitshow of the last weekend has me on edge. Everyone's suspect. I'm trying so hard to hide it, but as I walk through the halls of the dorms, I can't help but question everyone I pass. Everyone's Dragon. I have to get it together. It doesn't help that I'm terrified that Anna has to be out of my sight for even a minute. My wolf hates the idea. He's been scrambling around in his cage since I dropped her off at her door. These next few weeks are going to be torture. Especially, where Zeke's involved. I just can't believe it. Zeke and me are best friends. We practically grew up together. I thought I knew everything about the guy. Turns out he's a fucking Dragon or at least a sell out. How can I be normal? How can I not lose my shit when he's around Anna? Throwing her that fake ass smile.
MICHAELI'm sweating fucking bullets. My hands are clammy. My mouth is dry.I can hear the voices inside. One's River's and one is deep, low, and downright scary. They're arguing about me.From the sounds of it, Alpha Blake wants to kill me right now. I don't blame him. If I wasn't such a coward, I probably would have done it myself. I'm the worst possible monster the shifter world could ever have. I sentenced my own people to death just to get laid. What kind if sick fuck does that? Me, that's who.I just hope I'll get the chance to make it right before they kill me. I need to make this right. Not for me. I'm not trying to clear my conscience, but for my people. For Anna and River. I need to save them before it's too late.As I'm led into the office, I'm met with cold, dark eyes. The guy looks like River, but he's fucking m
ANNAI run into the packhouse. Shaken, breathless"River!" I yell as I run up the stairs."River!!" I yell again. He pops out of the bedroom door. I skid to a stop. My eyes are full of fear. My breathing is fast. His face is full of confusion and concern. "Anna, what's wrong?""It's Michael. He's in trouble." I grab his arm.River ran his fingers through his hair. "Damn it, Anna. Did you go see him after I explicitly told you not to?"I shook my head. Swallowing trying to calm my breathing. "No. He came to me.""What?!" River's eyes changed to rage. "Did he hurt you? What did he do, Anna?!" He grabbed my arms, looking me over."No! River, he didn't touch me. Will you just listen?!" I shrugged his arms off.I told him everything Michael told me."He was t
