Killian clenched his jaw as he stared at the blurry photo on his phone as if he could burn a hole through it. The image was grainy, taken from a distance, but the content was clear enough. Elara had gone out with a stranger.

A man she had never mentioned.

A man who had his hand on her lower back in a way that was too intimate and too comfortable for Killian’s liking.

His grip tightened around the glass in his other hand, he swirled the drink then downed it in one go. The burn of the alcohol did nothing to cool the rage simmering beneath his skin. Who the fuck was he?

His first thought was that Elara had betrayed him—that she was plotting with someone else behind his back. That was a dangerous possibility, but not the one that unsettled him the most.

No, what really set his blood on fire was the thought that she might be fucking this man.

That the coldness she had been directing at him all week wasn’t because she was keeping secrets but because she had moved on from him.

He let out a sharp breath, dragging a hand through his hair. This wasn’t like him. This wasn’t part of the plan.

He has always been an impenetrable man that no one could get through.

And yet, here he was, sitting in his office long past midnight, obsessing over who she spent her time with.

"Fuck," he muttered, stepping away from his desk. He needed to get this under control.

He would get this under control.

He picked up his phone and dialed his PR strategist.

"How's the preparations for the date going?" he asked. "Don't bother sending me options, pick what you like best and have it ready by tomorrow."

"Sir?" the voice on the other end sounded confused. "Tomorrow?"

"Yesm" he bit out.

A pause. Then, "Killian, are you sure—"

"Just set it up.* he snapped before hanging up.

This would work. He would get Elara exactly where he wanted her. No more games.

But deep down, a voice whispered— you just want to see if she brings up the other man.

And if she didn’t?

He didn’t even want to consider the answer to that.

*****

The next day at his office…

Killian had no idea what the hell Elara was playing at.

She walked into his office like nothing had changed, like she hadn’t been shutting him out for over a week. Like they didn't have a heated moment in her house the other day.

She was calmer. In control. Like she knew something he didn’t.

That only pissed him off more.

"I hope this is important," she said smoothly as she placed her bag on his desk then sat herself into the chair across from him. "I had other plans."

Plans with who? The thought echoed through his mind like the devil.

He leaned forward, folding his hands together. "We're going out tonight."

Her brows lifted slightly. "Out?"

"A date," he clarified, watching her carefully. "Something for the public."

For a brief moment, something flickered in her gaze—hesitation, calculation—before she leaned back with a smirk.

"Fine.” she said simply.

Just like that. No argument. No questions.

That only made him more suspicious.

But he didn’t say anything. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.

Not yet.

****

Later that night…

The venue was a high-end, exclusive restaurant, the kind where cameras weren’t allowed inside but the press still moved around outside, hoping for a glimpse of high-profile guests.

It was exactly what he needed.

Elara looked stunning, she was dressed in a black silk dress that hugged her curves, the deep neckline was teasing just enough skin to make it impossible to look away.

And for a second—just one—he forgot why they were even there.

But the moment was fleeting. Because as soon as they were seated, his anger came back with vengeance.

They made it through dinner, speaking about business, Ivy, damage control—anything but the tension between them like a third person at the table.

The big fucking elephant in the room.

And then he pulled out his phone.

And placed it on the table.

The image of her and the mystery man staring up at her.

Her entire body stilled.

He watched, waiting for her reaction.

Her lips parted slightly, brows furrowing for a second before she composed herself.

"Who is he?" Killian asked, voice deceptively calm.

Elara exhaled slowly. "Where did you get this?"

"Does it matter?" he asked coldly. "Who. Is. He?"

She hesitated. And for the first time that night, she looked… uncertain.

For a moment, he thought she might actually tell him something other than what he had been suspecting. Something that would calm his rage.

But then, her lips curled into something wicked.

And she delivered the one sentence that shattered his control.

"He's my boyfriend."

The words shot him like a bullet.

His breathing stopped. The air around him became charged and everything else ceased to exist.

He didn’t realize he had gone completely still until he saw the way Elara was watching him.

Like she was waiting for him to break.

And maybe he already had.

Because for the first time in a long time, Killian Hayes lost control.

  • Shattered vows: Revenge of an ex bride   PROLOGUE

“Find her!” a gruff voice yelled, voice echoing in the empty alley as Elara Beckett ran as fast as she could. She didn't dare look back, she couldn't, as terror shot down her spine. Her heels clattered against the pavement as she sprinted in and out of alleyways. She cursed her choice of shoes but she didn't have time to stop and take them off. Her c'est burned as she took ragged breaths. She clutched the envelope tighter in her trembling hands, it was her lifeline— the key to everything. All of Ivy and Aiden’s crimes, their lies, financial records, email, everything was in it. She thought she had been sneaky but somehow they found out and they were now coming after her. “Don't let her get away!" another voice roared, closer this time. She let out a squeak as she willed her legs to go faster, her heart pounding and threatening to burst out of her chest. The dark walls around her seemed to be closing in as the footsteps behind her drew nearer. A sharp turn at the next corne

“Ivy,” Aiden muttered against her lips, his voice low and dripping with affection. “You’re the one I’ve always wanted.” Her chest stung at his words, his betrayal cutting deep into her but she couldn't look away. Her heart shattered and the room spun. “What?!” She shrieked the glass in her hand slipping and scattering on the ground. She froze in her tracks as she looked at the sight before her. The faint sound of music and laughter from the engagement party faded into nothing as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing. Right before her in a hidden corner of the hallway her fiancé, Aiden Crawford, has his hand tangled in her step sister Ivy's hair, their lips were locked in a deep intimate kiss, one filled with so much passion it made her stomach churn. They jerked apart, their heads snapping in her direction. Aiden's face drained of color and panic took over but Ivy on the other hand smirked— she smirked like she had just won a game that Elara didn't know that she had bee

“Ivy will be the new heir to the Beckett legacy.” her father said. “What?” Elara whispered, voice barely audible as her heart sank. The past few days had been a blur of tears and pain. She has locked herself in her room unable to face the world and see the pitiful looks on their faces after witnessing her public humiliation. Now, her father had just landed the final blow. He had called for a family dinner and announced Ivy as his sole heir. “I have made my decision and it is final.” He said. Elara couldn't believe her ears. The man before her was a cold and cruel man, not her warm loving father that had raised her. Ivy sat next to him with a smug smile on her face. Her father looked at her, gaze unyielding. “I have come to realize that Aiden was right, you have always lacked the skills necessary to lead. Ivy on the other hand has proven herself to be more capable so she's a better choice to carry on the family name.” The room spun around her as her world tilted. Her father's b

The next few days flew by in a blur. Elara's team helped her get a luxurious estate and an office building back in Los Angeles. She was going to make her return a spectacle. As her private jet touched down in Los Angeles old memories began flooding back. She was here to take what was hers and she wouldn't leave without it. Her PR team has done a fantastic job in letting the world know: Elara Beckett, Billionaire CEO of Elaris Designs, Returns to Los Angeles to Expand Her Empire. She adjusted her sunglasses and blazer then put on her heels getting ready to alight from the jet. “Time to give them a taste of their own medicine.” **** “Elara?!” Ivy's voice cut through the crowd, sharp and filled with disbelief. It was just as high pitched and annoying as Elara remembered. The glass of wine in her hand trembled as her eyes widened watching Elara walk in. Elara raised a brow in surprise. “Killian Hayes.” She said smoothly, trying to mask the nerves bubbling within her. “We've never met, I'm surprised you know my name.” His lips curved into a slow, predatory smile. “You certainly know how to make an entrance. You made quite the impression tonight.” His gaze scanned her body, lingering on her curves for a moment too long before returning to her eyes. “You're a hard woman to miss, especially tonight.” “Did you enjoy the show?” “Yes, very much.” He replied smoothly, taking a step closer. She saw a slight amusement dance in his eyes and I made him devastatingly handsome. “What was the need for such, though?” Elara tilted her head to meet his eyes as a playful smirk tagged at the corner of her lips. “Bold moves for bold results, isn’t that what you always say?” Killian chuckled, the sound low, warm and oddly comforting. It sent a tingle down her spine. “Touché.” His gaze softened slightly as he studied her. “You’ve come back with a purp

A quiet command. There was a time where she might have reacted to it. A time when it might have meant something. Not anymore. She crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe to the living room, raising a brow. "If you're here for business, we can talk tomorrow. It had been over a week.A week of silence.A week of no calls, no sharp-witted remarks, no infuriatingly addictive presence.Killian had told himself he didn’t care. That Elara’s absence was a relief, that he could finally focus on what mattered—taking down Ivy and securing what was rightfully his.But that was a lie.Because against his will, she was in his head.Every damn day.He hated it.Hated the way his mind wandered to her when he should be strategizing. She drowned herself in work, forced herself to focus on anything but the lingering memory of his lips on hers, the way his hands had gripped her waist. But the worst part wasn’t the kiss itself. It was how easily he had shoved it aside, how easily he had pushed her away. For the second time. She had let herself slip. Let herself believe in something that wasn't real. Something that could never be real.Big mistake. With a tired sigh, she walked over to her couch in her penthouse and sat on it with a glass of wine in one hand and her phone in the other.
