Chapter Seventy-Four: Her Number

Stephanie's POV

There was only silence in the house but for the soft ticking of the wall clock. I sat in the sitting room. My hands were a bit jittery, and my head had problems staying focused on whatever was in front of me. The night had gotten so still and peaceful. Finally, Noah went to his room, and I had some alone time with my thoughts. Other than the soft hum of the heater in the corner, the only sound that filled the space around me, I found myself lost in the rhythm of its quiet whirring.

I didn't know what I was doing anymore. Every minute that passed felt like another step into the unknown, into a place to which I wasn't even sure how to find my way. One thing was for sure, though: I had to leave. I couldn't stay here forever. The walls were closing in on me, and every corner of this house seemed to be telling secrets-secrets I wasn't ready to hear.

But there was one thing I needed to do before leaving: getting Sophia's number. I had to get

Chapter Seventy-Five : Falling DeeperNoah's house was quiet that morning. The refrigerator hummed softly, the only thing that filled the space unless one counted the soft creaking of footsteps on hardwood floors. It was early, still just past dawn, and Noah had already gone about his usual morning routine. A swift cup of coffee, a shower, and a fresh suit that seemed to accentuate the tension in his posture; he had work to do. There were big meetings, important calls, and never once did the weight of responsibility lighten-up, not even in his home.He stepped into the kitchen and set his briefcase on the counter, rubbing a hand through his already messy hair. His eyes flicked toward the living room, where Stephanie had been resting the night before. He hadn't seen her since breakfast, and a part of him, despite the business that called him away, couldn't shake the worry that tugged at him.It had been days since she'd moved in with him, days since everything had been flipped onto its

Chapter Seventy-Six: Desperation and DeterminationRachel sat in the darkened room, her fingers playing with the rim of her coffee cup. The thoughts that swirled in her mind were different, but one thing was for sure: she had made up her mind. She could no longer sit in the shadows of uncertainty. She needed Noah back, not only because of what had happened between them but also because deep down, she knew she couldn't live without him.It was days since Noah had distanced himself from her, and though she had tried to tell herself she would be fine, the reality crushed her. Day by day, the space extended, and she was suffocating in the silence. Rachel had reached out repeatedly, but he seemed either too busy or further away each time. She had told herself it was for the best, that he needed space, but her heart would simply not listen to reason. Her hand trembled slightly as she put the cup down, staring into the dark liquid within, as if it would hold the answers to all things. Chapter Seventy-Seven: An Unexpected ConfrontationRachel's breathing was superficial, her hand clasped in Vanessa's as she stood at Noah's estate gates, acres of grounds stretching before her feet. The high wall loomed above them; each cast long shadows the late afternoon sun had begun its descent. It was surreal-standing here after all that time, after what took place between them. Noah's house had been the source of warmth and love, but now it loomed like some kind of intimidating fortress; the walls around Rachel's heart seemed to emulate it.Vanessa stood beside her, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her eyes brewing a silent storm. There was palpable tension between them. She hadn't come too happily to accompany Rachel on this mission. As a matter of fact, she was reluctant to come, but the look on Rachel's face-the determination mixed with quiet desperation-had finally made her offer her support.Ready?" Rachel asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She wasn't sure for

Chapter Seventy -Eight: Unspoken Truths and Conflicted FeelingsThe creak of the front door swinging open jerked the tightness in the room. Rachel's heart skipped a beat as her eyes shot towards the door when Noah stepped inside. It was as if the moment he appeared, time had stood still-the air was just so thick with anticipation. He stood still for a moment, his eyes locked with Rachel's, though his expression was unfathomable, distant. For one flashing instant, she could have sworn something flickered in his eyes-something which she couldn't name-but then it was gone, just as quickly as it appeared.Noah did not even acknowledge the two ladies standing by the door but instead, in one swift motion, looked in the direction of Stephanie, who stood by awaiting his reaction towards the visitors who just came knocking on the door. From the time Rachel and Vanessa had come to the door, Stephanie had felt a mixture of unease and concern building in her chest, to which Noah's arrival now add

Chapter Seventy NineNoah didn't say a word, his stare somewhere away, lost. He was never the type who would cling to people, much less somebody like Stephanie, who happened to be rather new in his life. Yet somehow, her company did center him, and he was glad for that.@I know you're here," Noah said quietly, "but sometimes, I just would like to handle things myself. Everything, starting with Rachel, has gotten too much. ""Rachel isn't all that's on your mind," Stephanie responded softly but aware. "There is more. I can feel it.Noah's shoulders stiffened, his jaw tightening; he didn't want to talk about it, not now, least of all with Stephanie, but the words bubbled up anyway, as if his own walls were beginning to crack. "I thought I could just move on, you know? Just leave everything behind, start fresh. But it's not that easy. You don't have to be over it when you're not, Stephanie said, softening. Chapter Eighty: The Storm WithinStephanie sat on her bed, looking out the window at the soft glow of the moon that managed to stream in, and the night was really still. The house did not have any sound, only occasionally the old wooden floor would creak under the weight of the night. Her mind was a very different story. It churned relentlessly, the happenings of the day rerunning within her mind-the unsolicited visit from Rachel and Vanessa, Noah's cold dismissal of them, most of all, Marcus's cryptic warning. An intuition within her hollered that something was really wrong. Very wrong. She had worked for Noah for months now, and though he had always been private, she'd never felt the weight of secrets so heavy until today. It wasn't just the tension in the air or the abrupt way he had ended their conversation about Marcus; it was something in his eyes, a flash of something she couldn't quite place. Fear? Guilt? Regret? She passed her fingers through her hair, staring out the window

The tension was palpable; every second felt like an eternity.Noah exhaled loudly, the paper falling onto the desk. Chapter Eighty Two: Rachel's Confession The rain pattered softly against the windows of Rachel's small apartment, its rhythmic hum in jarring contrast with the turmoil in her brain. She sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the open suitcase lying on the floor. A few scattered belongings lay inside, but her focus wasn't directed toward packing. Instead, her gaze was fixed on the old photograph she held between her trembling hands. It was her and Noah, she noticed, taken on a bright summer day, years ago. She laughed, her hair caught in the wind, as Noah looked at her with that smile that once made her feel like the center of his universe. It felt now like a distant echo of times gone by, which she tried but failed to forget. She ran her finger along the edges of the photograph, worn from years tucked away. How had things gone so wrong? How had she let herself destroy something so beautiful? Rachel's mind spiralled back to the beginning of their story, the perfect time when e

Chapter Ninety Six: PeaceThe room was quiet, the hum of the evening outside barely heard through the windows. Rachel sat on the bed, pulled her knees up close to her chest, and looked down at her hands. It had been an emotional day in surges which would leave one drained and still feel lighter than it had in weeks. She had heard Noah's words, taken the weight of his forgiveness, and finally-finally-allowed herself to believe that moving on was possible. But it was not only the past that weighed upon her with Noah. It was something deeper, far deeper, which she carried with her for much longer: the weight of decisions taken and actions she had led herself into in this position she is in presently. And none of these would have been possible without Vanessa. That made Rachel stop and think. Her friend, her confidante-her best friend-had always been there for her. In the maelstrom of their pain together, however, there was a part inside Rachel that wondered whether those choices had been

Chapter Ninety Five: The Unannounced VisitThe air was cool that evening, with that certain sting that made one clinch the jacket tighter and quicken the steps. Noah and Stephanie just stepped out of the restaurant, with the silence between them thick with dinner. Noah's mind had raced since their conversation, but his resolve had only been strengthened. He had to do this. He needed to see Rachel, to tell her he had forgiven her and wanted nothing other than for the two of them to be free to move on in life and find peace.Stephanie walked beside him, her hand clasped in his. She knew what he was doing, and as much as the wiser part of her still harbored her own reservations about the situation, she did understand that Noah needed this for his healing. She couldn't deny that a part of her was nervous, too-this wasn't going to be an easy conversation. But they couldn't ignore the past forever. The hum of the kitchen at the restaurant behind him was accompanied by clinking of fine china and silverware, with wafting smells of fresh vegetables and herbs that reminded him of how much he had missed homely comforts. With a quiet contentedness that only can come from cooking for somebody dear, Stephanie smiled brightly at him across the table. She had always been a fantastic cook, and tonight wasn't going to be an exception. There was such delicacy in the balance of tastes and flavors on his plate to confirm her genius, but more important than anything was the fire that lit with her presence there, and her laughter that danced around the room in its voice. You know, she said, sipping her wine, I think this might be the best meal I've made in weeks. The warmth from the cup seeped into her palms but did nothing to quell the chill gnawing at her chest. She hadn't been able to get out of bed for the past few days, but today, her mind couldn't afford the luxury of lingering in self-pity any longer. She knew no longer what to do with herself as the world kept blurring into one big confusion of pain. The weight of her actions weighed heavily upon her, at times insurmountable. She quit her job, the one thing that anchored her into some kind of routine, just to get away from the tension slowly choking her. The thought of facing Noah after everything that had happened-after having betrayed him and watched him move on with Stephanie-was just too much to bear. Chapter Ninety Two: The fight of Rachel and Vanessa's Growing PressureShe sat on the edge of her bed and stared into the quiet night out her window. The city glowed alive, but every one of its lights, so it seemed, was farther away from the storm brewing in her heart. An ache inside her chest made her feel the air thicken enough to suffocate her with every desperate attempt to get more air in. It wasn't the night that was heavy, but the torment inside of her, her guilt, the betrayal, and all her wrong choices. Each time her mind drifted to Noah and the days with him, she remembered how he loved her, took care of her, and was there for her during the days when she needed it most. It now felt like the memories had been poisoned. Every touch he had given her, every word of love, every gesture was clouded in the knowledge that she had betrayed him. Not just once but twice-first by dating James, then by her part in Stephanie's kidnapping. She had crossed lines she could never uncross.Tea

  • Shattered Trust   Guilt

Chapter Ninety One: GuiltThe soft, rhythmic sound of the rain tapping against the windowpane provided almost a melancholic soundtrack to Rachel's thoughts. She sat alone in her small apartment, the dim light from the lamp casting long shadows on the walls. She stood stiff, her hands curled into fists where her nails had dug deep into her palms to steady some unevenly escaping breaths from her chest. The whirlwind of turmoil, guilt, and regret all swirled within her mind.Rachel had sat here for hours without the slightest idea how much time had actually elapsed since she last checked her watch. Outside, the world had dulled to a gray haze, rain diffusing reality and fantasy. Her head was filled with visions of what had taken place during the last days. The look on Stephanie's terrified face when they took her away-when she and Vanessa dragged her away-stayed in her mind, awake or asleep. It was a memory that she could not shake, no matter how hard she tried. She thought of Noah and h

The mood in the room was romantic, to say the least-perfect for Noah's proposal to Stephanie. He readjusted a small, velvet box stuck into his jacket pocket and scanned the surroundings critically over it. There was an almost palpable sense of contentment in the air: Things were going according to schedule, and he could already not wait to see Noah pop the question."Is it ready?"
