Kendrick's POV
It looked like I was dreaming, but I wasn't. Instead, it was reality.
If told I was going to run into Mickey someday, I wouldn't have believed it a bit.
“And she hasn't lost her touch; rather, she is radiating,” I muttered, only to shake my head sideways, trying to get the thoughts about her off.
I was supposed to be mad at her for acting as a bridge between me and my inheritance but here I was, drooling over her shamelessly.
Digging my hand into my hair, I pulled out my laptop only to turn it off the next second.
Through the intervention of my father's lawyers, whom he quickly withdrew from the case, I was able to silence the consumer who wanted to wreck my business.
Even after doing this, my company was still struggling, making me lose interest in work.
Now drumming my fingers against the table, I had my gaze fixated on Cassie's picture on my table.
Apart from her, I had no reason to keep struggling with work. I would have quit a long time ago.
Kiara was nothing but a thorn in my flesh. She neglected Cassie, and me like we never existed and only came crawling back whenever she needed money.
“I thought I was making the right decision then.” I let out a bitter chuckle. “Indeed, one mistake is enough to drown someone.” Taking a deep breath, I pulled myself up, and almost immediately, the door flung open.
“I had looked up to the name and identity… it matches that of your ex-wife.” Alfred rapped.
When I returned from the restaurant earlier, I had asked him to look into Mickey.
“So… what's she doing?” I asked, feigning not to be interested when, in the real sense, I was itching to find out what had become of her.
“She is the CEO of Valor Fashion Home.” He said, and at once, I grabbed the edge of the table as it was unbelievable.
All the while I had been studying that company from a distance, beginning from its opening and every single achievement they had made over the years.
“No way!” I muttered, lowering myself on my chair, still holding onto the edge of the table.
Moments later, I snapped my head upwards and with my gaze fixated on him, I asked, “Are you certain with your claim?”
Chuckling, I added, “I guess you are making a mistake. You should look into her carefully, I mean… there have been cases of mistaken identities.” I said, trying to wrap my head around what I had just heard.
“I recognized your ex-wife pretty well, and I can even tell who she is from a distance; I’m not making an error here.” He sang like a canary.
Grabbing my head, I let out a low sigh as I bit my bottom lips.
Things were getting rough and tough by the day.
After a hard day at work, I returned home to get some rest.
At first, everything was going well since Kiara was home and tending to Cassie, but just when I was about to drift into sleep, I heard a little squeak next to me.
Snapping my eyes open, I locked eyes when Cassie's doe pair.
Pouting, she had her hands pushed in front of her with her whole body covered in milk. She must have pulled down the pack from the kitchen counter.
With a frown on my face, I threw my leg off the bed but the moment I saw her facial expression, I flashed her a smile.
“Where is your mom?” I asked in a mild tone in contrast to the scream that wanted to erupt through my lungs.
“She went…” She pointed towards the door.
“Dad!” Holding my hand, she began to pull me until I rose from the bed. She continued pulling me until we got to the kitchen.
With my eyes widened in anger, I clenched my fists by my side. The more I stared at the sight in front of me, the more furious I became.
Cassie had changed the look of the kitchen, spilling food ingredients on the island table, crashing plates, and doing several other unimaginable things.
“I'm hungry.” She tugged my hand, bringing me back to my senses.
“I will get you some food now,” I said with my back turned on her, otherwise, she would have seen the angry look on my face and then burst into tears.
By the time I had finished cleaning the place, it was already dusk but Kiara was nowhere to be found.
After putting Cassie to sleep, I made my way to the living room to watch TV in a bid to clear my head but it didn't help a bit.
My mind kept flashing back to Mickey despite all of my efforts to forget about her.
Biting my bottom lips, I fell on the couch and with my hands wrapped across my chest, I had my gaze on the ceiling.
Where has she been all these while?
How was she able to rise to her current level?
These questions kept ringing in my head and when I couldn't take it anymore, I decided to drown my sorrow with alcohol.
Before I could take a step, the door flung open and Kiara stuttered in. I didn't need anyone to tell me she was drunk since she was staggering, not to talk about the alcohol that she reeked of.
“Thank goodness Cassie is asleep.”
“Hey! Kendrick.” She called, waving at me but I ignored her.
Pushing my hands into my pockets, I began to grimace as I stared at her with an irritating look on my face.
It was as if I should go to her and bash her face against the wall.
“Why that look?” She asked, bringing me back to reality.
With my lips still pressed tightly together, I feigned like she wasn't speaking to me as I followed her movement with my eyes.
When she finally managed to close the gap separating us, she grabbed my shoulder, increasing my irritation.
Unable to bear it anymore, I pushed her off.
“You make me regret knowing you each day.” I spat in her face.
Mickey“I will be there in a second,” I responded, tucking my phone into my bag. My heart kept pounding inside of me as my silver heels made a soft sound on the floor of the room. I had just arrived at the high profile event that I had been invited to. The room was buzzing with so much life and there was some soft melodious music playing in the background. “A live orchestra band!” I almost blurted out. It was rare to see a love orchestra band in a business event. I guessed this was somehow different from all other events that I had been opportuned to attend. I adjusted the strap of my black silk gown and I wore a polite smile on my face so that I won't scare off people who crossed my path. My chest tightened but I forced myself to focus on the present and not what had been going on in my life all these while. Tonight was about making connections, I had promised myself. I need to prove that I, Mickey, was more than her past. Allowing my past to hold me down will make me sink in
Mickey“Damn it!”I almost grabbed a glass close to me, preparing to smash it into the wall. Then I remembered that my daughter was here with me. What have I done to deserve this kind of embarrassment that I was getting? I wanted to send a message to my assistant, but what was I going to tell her?The only thing that I could do was rant. While I was still pacing around, hitting the wall with my fist this time. Kendrick's message came and my anger rose up again. “Why is this son of a bitch texting me? I guess he must have seen what is circulating around the blogs,” I muttered angrily at myself. My hands trembled as I read his message, his words felt like a hot slap across my face:"We need to talk. It’s about Kayden. Call me."I slammed the phone onto the table and my breathing became sharp. “This was not about the blog post after all. It's about my child. He has the guts to text me. This man must be out of his mind. I think I could advise him to see the psychiatrist.”He wants to
MickeyMy life was a mess. I was beating myself up everyday and at the same time was still trying to put myself together over what happened. But still, I could not stop thinking about that text message that I have received. All day, it played on in my mind, causing havoc within me. The words kept burning inside of me like they had been carved into my skin. "I can help you get the post taken down. Meet me. You know where. If you don’t, the next post will be worse."I was going crazy. I fucking need a clue. Who would send something like that? How did they know me, and why were they threatening me? There was no way I would have a clue about who the bastard that sent the text was. I stared at my phone again, trying to make sense of the message. It was as though the unknown number was staring back at me, making mockery of me. “Who are you?” I muttered under my breath, gripping the phone tightly asking no one in particular. I opened my browser and typed the number into a phone numbe
Kendrick“Tick, tock. Tick, tock.”The clock kept ticking off slowly as I stared at it weakly. Life was supposed to feel perfect by now.At least, that was what I had convinced myself when I left Mickey. I thought I was making the right decision for myself and for my future. She didn't deserve to be in my life but as I sat in the dimly lit living room, listening to Kiara yelling at our nanny for forgetting to warm the baby’s bottle, all I could feel was regret. Regret kept creeping up on me, making me feel like a mad man. Was I thinking this way because I set my eyes on her at the event and she refused to give me an audience?I could not tell. But, Mickey had grown so much that she now had the guts to put me in a place that I don't belong..“Do you even know how to do your job? Don't let me regret hiring you. I pay you well for this!” Kiara’s voice rang through the house as she stormed into the room. Her heels clicked against the smooth floor as she held tight our Cassie. The nanny
MickeyI had not been able to find the person who had been posting shit about me. It was heartbreaking and I chose to forget about it for a while even though Teddy was helping me. All his efforts had been futile and I have decided to let it go especially now that I haven't seen any new posts up on the blog site. And up till now, my phone had been ringing nonstop with calls from stupid journalists and curious “friends.” I was tired. I wanted to leave.***My shoulders were raised high as I walked into this event with the sun glasses hiding my eyes. The event room looked breathtaking and it had glittering chandeliers casting golden light at different corners of the room. Everywhere I turned, all I could see were expensive suits and dresses. For a second, I thought I was not meant to be here. But my status had long changed. I was going to dine with kings and queens.I had not planned on attending this event. It felt like just another meaningless gathering of rich and powerful folks.
“I’m not taking no for an answer, Mickey.”I froze, blinking my ears continuously at him. This sounded like a joke. I was caught between surprise and disbelief. The only thing I did was to decline his offer to take me on a date. I hated the way everyone's eyes shifted to us immediately he said that and I became uncomfortable. Derrick’s voice was still calm as he spoke but it was insistent and a slight chuckle came out of his mouth. I glanced around, unsure if I had heard him correctly.“Excuse me?” I said, sitting up straighter on the chair. “You heard me,” he replied, his tone was playful yet he sounded like those words didn't come out of his mouth by mistake. “I’m asking you out. A real date. Dinner. Nothing complicated, nothing scary. Just two people getting to know each other over good food.” he added. I blinked, unsure how to respond. This was weird. Really weird for me to digest. Yes, I know that I kind of fancy the man in front of me. But, come on. This was too quick. “D
Mickey“I didn’t expect to see you here,” Derrick’s voice startled me as I set my coffee cup on the conference table.I turned to find him standing in the doorway of the boardroom, wearing an expensive suit that was impeccably tailored, and his signature warm smile. My stomach flipped unexpectedly, and I mentally cursed myself for the reaction.I should not be reacting this way whenever I see him. Remember, that he doesn't have to know that you feel something for him, Mickey. Don't be an asshole or a cheap bitch!“Likewise,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. “I didn’t realize your company was involved in this project. You should have told me when we talked the other day.”“Well, that is a surprise, I guess. Remember, we didn't talk for a long time. If we had, you would have known but you decided to keep your distance from me. ” he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he stepped further into the room.I cleared my throat, hoping to maintain my composure. He was beginning to make
Mickey“Your son said my daughter was bossy,” I said, crossing my arms and glaring at Derrick. Somehow, our children met and are beginning to know each other. I could not stop my daughter, Kayden, from interacting with Tom, whom she recently met. They are both children and might one day meet themselves in the future when they are grown. Derrick just chuckled at my words, seriously unbothered by what I just said. “Only because she told him how to climb the monkey bars properly. I believe her exact words were, you are doing it all wrong, Tom.’”I tried not to smile, but the corners of my lips betrayed me. My lips had long pulled out a smile. “She really cares about the safety of someone as little as she is. I don’t see the problem in that.”“Oh, there is no problem,” Derrick said, leaning casually against the school fence as we watched the kids on the playground. “It’s just that Tom is not used to being bossed around. Usually, he is the one giving instructions. And now that it's c
Kendrick“You can do a fucking DNA all you want, Kendrick. I don't care and I don't give a damn!” “Oh, you are pushing me to the wall, Kiara? Aren't you?” “Of course, I am. You don't trust me. You just come up and decide to have a DNA test? Didn't you fuck me? Didn't you get me pregnant? Why are all of these changing? Why do you now doubt that I'm the mother of your child?” she questioned and that was the last conversation we had before I found myself in the hospital. ***I hated the smell of hospitals but Kiara pushed me this far. The sterile scent of the doctor’s office clung to the air and it was heavy and suffocating. I sat rigidly in the chair with my hands gripping the armrests so tightly that my knuckles were beginning to turn white. Across from me, the doctor adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat. “I’m sorry, Mr. Kendrick, but the test results are conclusive. Cassie is not biologically your daughter.”I shot out of my chair, letting out a low growl at first. “You
MickeyThe day went by quickly and it truly felt like a calm after a heavy storm. For the first time in years, I could breathe freely, unburdened by anything going on around me. The authorities had moved swiftly after receiving our evidence, and the Kendrick’s were finally being held accountable for the death of my parents. This was not enough revenge for me but it was a start. Let them have a taste of their own medicine. Today was about moving forward, about honoring my parents in the way they deserved. Because as it seems, they were finally getting the justice that they deserved. I stood in front of my new boutique with the sign above the door. "The Darwins." I traced the carved letters with my eyes and my chest tightened with a mix of pride and bittersweet joy. Their names. Those were my parents’ names.“You are going to cry, aren’t you?” Derrick teased from behind me. His warm voice came in, making my heart sink. I turned to look at him, blinking rapidly to keep the tears
MickeyI heard some slow, hesitant knocks on my door that made me get up and leave what I was doing. The knock on my door was almost timid, like the person on the other side was not sure they should be there.I took a while before opening the door for the supposed visitor and I took a quick glance at the clock on the wall. It was late. I mean, it was too late for casual visitors to come to visit me. When I opened the door, I was greeted by a face I had not seen for a long time. Kiara. “What the hell are you doing at my house?” I yelled as bad memories began to flood into my mind again. She was the last person I wanted to see at this time. Kiara, the lady who stole Kendrick away from me and opened her legs for him so that he could put a baby inside. “I know that you don't expect me to be here…but..”“But, what? Listen, I think you missed your way,” I said almost shutting the door against her but she held the door firmly, stopping me from shutting it. For a second, my eyes just r
MickeyThe audacity that some men had needed to be studied as a full course in school. Kendrick was one of those men that needed to be studied. Seeing him again some days back, only made my heart ache. I was beginning to heal and forget everything about him until what happened, happened and he was in front of me. How pathetic. “But what if Kendrick still loved me? What if he was serious about still being in love with me? What if he just wanted me to forgive him and he had truly repented?” The questions went through my mind like a running chaos and I had no other option but to shut it out. I am done with Kendrick. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” Derrick asked and I was pulled out from my thoughts. “oh, yes. I'm sorry. I was just thinking. Let's continue,” I said and Derrick stared at me as if I had gone insane. The files sat on the table between us, it was a damning pile of aged documents, faded photographs, and scrawled letters that felt scary. My hands trembled as I flipped throu
KendrickNews reached me that Mickey was getting her hands stained with dirty secrets. I never expected her to be this relentless. Mickey was supposed to be like her father. She was smart, yes, but cautious. She was a woman content to stay within the safe confines of her boutique and was too wary of danger to poke at things better left buried. But here she was, tearing through shadows. I had spent years carefully hiding that secret from her. Right from when she was still my wife, till now that we are divorced. Yes. My parents were the ones responsible for the death of her parents and I still had the guts to put a baby in her and shatter her heart into pieces. I was still nursing my wounds from when she rejected me and lied about me to her daughter and now, this? I didn't care this time. I had to see her unannounced. I was in front of her boutique and I watched her from the window of my car as she stood outside her boutique, talking animatedly with a man that I had no idea who he w
MickeyThe wave of unrest I had felt in the last couple of days was enough to make me go nuts. Right now, I was in a quiet cafe where you can't dare to talk loudly. If you do, the eyes of everyone would be on you.I stirred at my tea absentmindedly and my mind wandered to different places as I waited for him to arrive. My hands were clammy despite the cool breeze coming in through the open window.Across from me, Derrick sat with his arms crossed and with him, I felt different. I don't know if he knew how I felt about him but most times, I wish he would never leave my sight even for a second. And trust me, he was doing just that without me mentioning it to him. Derrick had not left my side since I told him about the note.He was not saying much, but his watchful eyes scanned every corner of the room, as if expecting danger to leap out of the shadows.“He will come,” Derrick assured me, breaking the silence. “I know,” I murmured. But did I really know? The truth was, I didn’t know
Mickey“An envelope? I was not expecting anything from anyone,” I thought within me as my eyes rested on the envelope laying in front of me. The envelope was plain and completely out of place on the counter at my boutique. It had no return address, just my name scribbled in an unfamiliar handwriting that felt both unfamiliar and vaguely familiar at the same time.I took a deep breath as my fingers hovered over the envelope. I didn't know what to do and something about it felt off. “What am I going to do with you now? Fling you into the thrash?” I asked no one in particular as curiosity began to rise inside of me. I wanted to know what was in it and why it was here in the first place. Sliding my nail under the seal or the envelope, I opened it carefully. Inside the envelope were black and white photographs. They were so old and faded at the edges. My heart skipped as I recognized the faces in the photographs. There were that of my parents and they had a large smile on their fac
Mickey“Is he the one?” Eleanor's question rang in my ears and I was shocked. First, I didn't expect us to be getting close. Second, she followed me back to the city. “I don't know what you mean by that, Eleanor. Did I tell you that I have found the one?” I asked her and she hit me playfully. “I'm sorry. It's just that the way you look at him makes me think that way. I thought you might have taken my advice and found a guy to go fuck the hell out of you,” she blurted out and I almost shut her mouth with my hands.“Shhhh! We are in public, Eleanor. Stop talking that way,” I said, taking a quick look at my surroundings to confirm if anyone heard me. Thankfully, everyone in here was going around and minding their own business. “What are you ashamed of? People have sex everyday,” she protested and I walked briskly away from her while she kept pleading with me to wait for her. I adjusted the scarf around my neck and glanced at Derrick, who was now walking beside meAlongside Eleanor,
Derrick“Get in the car!” I found myself ordering my son after I could no longer bear what I was feeling inside of me.I could not count the number of times that I had called Mickey and she told me that she was out of town. Out of town? Babe. I have missed you for days. I am dying to see your face. I am..I paused. I didn't tell her this and I struggled to keep it to myself. The number of times that I had called to check up on her was enough to tell her that I was not doing great without her by my side. Was I over thinking things? Or was I doing too much by seeing her as my future wife when she didn't look like she had feelings for me? It was crazy but I didn't mind. Good things take time. ***The drive to the seaside town was longer than I anticipated, but Tom was a good distraction. He kept up a steady stream of conversation, talking about everything from his latest gaming obsession to his classmates who he played with in school. All children's talk. I barely had anything to c
