MIKE

I went to the cemetery where I usually found my inner self and calmed down. It was where I always found the answers to questions and made the best decisions. I didn’t know how I drove there. If no police car was following me, it meant it was relatively okay.

I sat down on the bench in front of the cross and stayed that way for a good few minutes. The weather was gorgeous. The sun was in the sky in all its glory and was spreading its hot rays over the unbroken expanse, giving everyone a great deal of excitement.

“Why did you let me fall in love with that woman? You knew it was her. Why didn’t you tell me? How could life be so cruel and steal you both away from me, and now I fall in love with my fiercest enemy? I fell in love with the very one who took our happiness with no remorse.”

Tears streamed down my cheeks. Though I wished I had held back my tears, because it was not very becoming for a man to cry, I honestly couldn’t and gave my emotions free rein.

“It was her, wasn’t it?

EMILYI could hear everything Kevin was saying, but I hoped it was just a nightmare that I was waking up from as soon as possible. Everything he said about my mother and his plans, how he “bought” me and how my mother “sold” me out of cowardice, sounded more like a horror story to me. I couldn’t believe it. It just wasn’t true. “You’re lying! Mom is a tough woman, but she loves us and wouldn’t put our lives in danger. To her, we, her daughters, are the most important.”He didn’t comment on anything I said, instead he picked up the phone and called my mother. Kevin put the phone on speaker so we could both hear their conversation. He put her hand over my mouth so she couldn’t speak before I could react in any way.“What are you doing, mother-in-law, dear? How’s the firm going? What news do you have of my wife?” he asked in a calm tone.“Kevin? What do you want? Leave Emily alone! I’ve given you everything you wanted. Now leave her alone,” mother replied angrily. I wished I had let go

EMILY“Darling, don’t talk like that. I’ve known Luiza for a long time. She really cares for you. And to you and your sister, it’s just that life hasn’t been kind to her, and that’s forced her to become hard and cold.”“But where does that leave mother’s love? The warmth with which you must protect your young? How could she not choose me and choose the firm? She sold me out for her firm. Kevin said he’d give me a divorce if she pleaded guilty and gave up her firm. He had her on something, and she sacrificed me for her own good. Why didn’t she just trust me and tell me the truth? Maybe together we could have found a solution to this problem,” I yelled at her.“My dear, have you considered that maybe this choice may have broken her heart too? I don’t think Luiza could be that harsh. Something is unclean at work. I feel that what you have found out is not quite all. She remained free, all for your protection. I’m sure of it. From what you’re telling me, I think your husband is more dange

  • Shadows of the Past   MY LIFE EXPOSED

MIKEAll the way to the cemetery, Emily remained silent. Although Olivia dropped her off at the front beside me, she refused and climbed in the back. I was pretty nervous. When this woman showed up, I felt emotions I thought had been buried when my wife died. I had no control over what my body did. My eyes darted to the rearview mirror, where I could see her sublime face. My hands were sweating more and more on the steering wheel. What I felt for her was different. It was stronger than those playful butterflies inside us. It was more tender than the purest flower. I was so passionately devoted that I would have fought anyone or anything just to see her beaming face. When we reached the cemetery, I caught her wandering gaze in the rearview mirror, but she didn’t ask. It was clear she was waiting for an explanation, an honest one from me. She was so shy and withdrawn. She acted like a frightened child pining in her mother’s protective shadow. I hated myself for being so stupid.“Come

  • Shadows of the Past    BEYOND MY POWER

EMILY“Emily? I don’t understand? Did he know another girl, Emily? Olivia, what does she mean?” I asked her, surprised and scared at the same time. “I know nothing about that. God, what a man I loved!” said I, full of nerves. I could feel my insides seething. That wasn’t Kevin, the man I loved and would have given my life for. “Calm down and let him finish. Please be nice.” Olivia told me in a calm and friendly tone. “Yes, Emily, you’re right. For a long time, I thought you were a ruthless, soulless woman. To me, a woman who doesn’t soften when she sees another woman hurt is honestly a soulless monster. For a long time, I sought you out, wanting to get revenge on you for Mary and our baby. Only when I first saw you, everything went to hell. Your soft face, gentleness and demeanor gave me much to think about. My intuition told me you were not the coldhearted female I was seeking.” “Wait, a minute! You thought I was involved in that accident with Kevin? How dare you do

EMILY “I miscarried,” I told them through sobs.I then burst into sobs. I just wanted to get all the pent-up venom out.I was angry at the man who had ruined two lives. By what right? Who was he? He shattered two women’s dreams. That wonderful dream of becoming a mother? How could he not care about me at all? My agitation was growing so loud I could hear my blood boiling in my ear. My pain grew with every word I spoke. The past had come back like a thick fog and darkened our faces. Anger and frustration replaced happiness and joy.I saw the two of them speechless. Olivia tried to encourage me, but she was totally stunned and two tears were glistening in her eyes. All she did was squeeze my hand in encouragement. From the way she was holding me, it was clear that on the inside her anger was reaching its highest pitch.Mike said nothing. He didn’t take his eyes off me. His look was sad and painful. It was as if he couldn’t believe it was all true and that I wouldn’t dare lie about some

  • Shadows of the Past   I WOULD DO ANYTHING

MIKE “Hello! Sorry it took so long. The patient is fine now. She is stable and recovered, I would say. I have given her an infusion treatment based on strengthening the body. I also took some samples for analysis. It’s nothing serious. A high state of agitation and lack of nutrition led to fainting. What I didn’t like at all were the bruises on my body. If there’s no evidence of physical violence, I wonder what it could be. There are no signs of illness. I’d still like to do some more thorough tests on him just to be sure, though I’m still sticking with violence. On the x-ray, there were signs of rib injuries. They’re healed now, but .... Too bad such a beautiful woman...” Olivia instantly turned yellow when she heard the doctor’s words. What was the doctor trying to tell us? That Emily... Kevin... was assaulting her? Violence? No way! The universe couldn’t be that cruel. Clearly not. “Doctor, are you trying to tell us that Emily has something serious, or that she is bein

  • Shadows of the Past   SHE SOLD ME

EMILYMike’s question opened up an actual war in me. There was a fierce battle between reason and heart. Reason was the first to cry out: “How dare he ask such questions? These are strictly personal things I will not share with anyone.” But the heart immediately came to Mike’s defense, saying: “You don’t see how much this man loves you! A love you’ve never felt from Kevin.” I was stuck. My aim was to bring this war to a close. I felt like I was draining my strength. I was fighting with myself to decide who to give justice to. Who was I supposed to listen to? It was true that Mike amazed me with his honesty. A story like you could only reveal to someone you trusted completely or someone you were deeply in love with. Now honestly, about trust, it was unlikely. We didn’t know each other well enough to say it was about trust. I thought and rather hoped it was about sincere and pure love. We sat for a few seconds in silence. I blocked out my chaotic thoughts with all my might,

EMILYAs Mike talked to me, I fixed my gaze on his eyes for a few seconds. However, I could not comprehend the words he was saying. I couldn't respond. My body was frozen, and I found myself unable to do anything. I could see him fidgeting because I was paralyzed. He took my hand in his, but I was nothing. I could see, but I couldn’t hear and I couldn’t move. I fixated my mind on Olivia’s words but also on the dangers that Kevin would face with me. His words were still ringing in my ears even now: “Stay away from that asshole you were with if you want him to live. It’s so easy for me to kill him in his sleep or run him over. What ....” I couldn’t think about a relationship with Mike anymore. I shouldn’t have gotten close to him, no matter how much I loved him. He wasn’t to blame for my stupidity. I was afraid for Mike. I couldn’t put his life in danger.“Don’t even think about it! Kevin can see you,” my conscience reminded me.When he dabbed my cheek, I slapped his hand away, got u

EMILYI still couldn’t believe everything we had experienced on the last day. It was all worth writing. I was sure it would make a wonderful book. A novel to write about my life story. It was unbelievable. Susan ruined my life, and she saved it. I was home because of her. Why had she sacrificed her life for us?“Why did you do that?” I finally asked her.“What did I do?” she asked me defiantly.“Why did you save me? You know you won’t have a quiet life with Kevin now.”“I won’t have a quiet life, anyway. My parents don’t want to see me and he’s with Carla. He’s sick of me. Besides, Carla’s willing to sacrifice even more than I have. She broke into the house of Kevin’s worst enemy just to get information for him,” she told me. “I also have pictures of her, Luke and other rivals of Kevin’s in various compromising situations and poses. When Kevin was fighting between life and death, she was partying with the rich guys and I was nursing him. But as soon as she came to her senses, she turn

MIKEI rushed over and pulled Eddy’s body off Emily. She was terrified! The crying and panic was preventing her from breathing normally. Her heart was pounding like crazy. She grabbed her torn dress and clutched it to her chest. She didn’t realize it was me next to her and not someone else. What had that bastard done to her?I tried to pick her up, but she pulled away. She was still in shock. She couldn’t realize I was there.“Baby, it’s me, Mike. You’re safe now.”She looked at me with wide eyes. When she realized I was indeed beside her, she released the wellspring of tears and threw herself into my arms.“We have to hurry. If Kevin comes back, it won’t be good for us,” Susan said from the doorway of the room.I picked Emily up and followed Susan. She knew how to sneak out of sight of Kevin’s bodyguards. The house was empty, so we went through quickly. We went down to the garage and got into a roomy station wagon. Susan was in front of the wheel and Emily and I climbed into the trun

EMILY“Maybe? Have you checked to see if we’re siblings?” I asked in a nonchalant tone. I wanted to be stronger than Kevin could have ever imagined.I didn’t want to continue the conversation. I ran for the door, wanting to leave the room, but Kevin grabbed my arm and pulled me back. Eddy quickly came up beside him and put a hand on his shoulder. He glared at him, then turned back to me.“Stay here until I finish everything I have to say. Don’t you ever dare let me speak alone again. Besides, you’re not going anywhere. Here you’ll rot. This will be your grave,” he screamed.“I...” I was more afraid than ever, but not for myself but for what he was about to say.“I always thought you were his daughter. I took a DNA test to confirm it and that’s when I relieved myself.”“Then what do you want from me? I’m not the fruit of sin. I’m not your sister.”“You are not the fruit of sin, but you are the fruit of my childhood torment. I swore I would make you mine and give you the life I lived be

I promise I’ll talk Olivia into destroying your file,” I tried to convince him, hoping I could talk him down.“And you want me to believe you?” He asked harshly.“I’m not like you! I don’t lie!” I replied curtly.“Emily, you’re mine and you’re mine forever, whether you like it,” he continued in a calm tone.“You can do whatever you want with me, but leave them alone. Don’t touch them, they don’t answer to me,” I replied just as dryly.“Wow! Little princess claws out! My dear, you are in no position to negotiate or threaten. I remind you that you are in my territory. One command and you’re dead,” he replied sadistically.“Kevin, I’m not scared of you and you know it,” I said fiercely.“You really don’t know how to lie. • Shadows of the Past    BROKEN PROMISES

EMILYI was afraid, more afraid than ever. Kevin was so unpredictable. He proved to be more dangerous than anyone else. He came back from the dead and was ready to destroy us all. I didn’t know what would happen to me there. In the end, it didn’t matter what happened to me. All I cared about was the safety of the people I loved. He promised Mike’s release if I stood by him. I wanted peace for everyone. My life was meaningless without Mike. The closer I got to the meeting place, the harder my heart pounded. I could feel it not in my chest where it belonged, but it was rising into my throat in a big, painful lump that was sapping my strength. In front of Menfail Park, a black car with tinted windows waited for me, just as the message had said. I looked around before opening the back door and seeing that there were no familiar eyes, I quickly got in.To my surprise, there was only a driver in the car who didn’t even say hello. As soon as I got in, I got another text message:“This phone

  • Shadows of the Past   YOU ARE A BASTARD!

MIKECouldn’t believe that this bastard has so many lives, like a damn cat. I hated him. I even came to hate him more than anything else in the world. What had I done wrong to want him to see me destroyed? He kidnapped my wife and my unborn child, even though I left and withdrew from his life. I left him everything, but it still wasn’t right. What else did he want? Emily was mine. I wouldn’t leave her to anyone. I was fighting for her, as I wasn’t willing to lose her, too. Mary caused me enough pain. Then, when I saw Emily lifeless, it was cruel.I knew for sure where he was hiding, and I wasn’t afraid of him or his goons. Rather than live a panic-stricken life, then fight with my life. I was doing it for the woman I loved and for myself. I owed myself, Mary, and Emily.I raced at top speed toward the house where the bastard was holed up. I felt my blood boiling and my heart pounding with the rage I felt. When I got there, I burst through the gate, oblivious to the guards running afte

  • Shadows of the Past    I'LL KILL HIM!

EmilyAs I stepped into the driveway in front of the house, my emotions overwhelmed me. I felt like I saw Kevin in front of me with every step. I even felt like I heard him.“I should have taken Olivia up on her offer to stay at Frank’s,” I thought angrily to myself. At Olivia’s wedding, I felt like all that wound had healed, but I realized there was still a flame smoldering in the depths of my heart.Mike got to know me very well and realized right away that the past broke my peace. I feared for a second that I might be overcome with jealousy, but I soon realized that Mike was not that kind of man. To my relief, Mike realized he was the only one I loved, but that the wounds of the past still hurt. Still, he knew, or at least I hoped he knew, that no one and nothing had any place between us. I only wanted him in my life!I opened the door carefully, as I had the wedding night scene in my eyes and in my ears. I could hear, like a melody on repeat, Kevin’s words that I had heard when I

  • Shadows of the Past   I'LL TAKE THAT RISK

KEVINI wish I could have seen my idiot brother’s face when Eddy shot his girlfriend. Actually, his mistress was because she was still my wife.“Honey, please don’t get up. You’re still in a delicate state.” I hated being nagged, especially by Susan. She’d always been a nag who thought by throwing herself on my bed she’d have me in her clutches like a puppy. Except her plans didn’t coincide with mine, so I quickly chased her away. “You must be cautious, as you’re still weak. You’ve had a very serious accident and you haven’t fully recovered,” she continued, rousing me from my reverie.“Leave me! Get lost!” I yelled at her.“But ....” she tried to apologize in a trembling voice. I honestly had more important things to do than listen to her.“What don’t you get? I said leave!” I yelled at her again.“Kevin!” she said and walked closer to me. She tried to stroke my cheek, but I got so annoyed that I hit her across the face with all my strength. She looked at me with wide, questioning eye

Emily“Thanks for everything, baby. I loved the concert so much and especially the dedication you gave me,” I told her flushed.“What? Were you still in a coma?” he asked, surprised.“I don’t know how to explain, but I could hear everything. I wanted to wake up, but something was drawing me into a distant, pure world, something dreamlike. It felt so good there, but I was sad about your suffering. I don’t know if it was all real or just dreams, but I felt present in two totally different worlds,” I tried to explain.Mike smiled gently. He struck my cheek, then lifted my left hand and kissed it. The engagement ring gleamed beautifully in the beating sunlight that streamed nonchalantly in through the large parlor window.“Never mind what it was. You’re here with me now and that’s the most important thing right now. I love you infinitely wonderful woman!” he told me.His daily care helped me recover faster than the doctors expected. They always said that love works wonders, and that I was
