“Sweetie, where have you been?” said Briane the moment Blame entered the tent.

“OMG, Beastie! Are you okay? We thought you’ve gone missing again!” Reigna was already in front of her, checking her body, her brows creasing. “What happened to the foil?”

“It doesn’t matter—”

“Of course it matters, Blame! You look dreadful without it!”

Blame’s brows raised. “Since when did your opinion mattered to me?”

Everyone in the room gasped, except for Hail who merely looked up.

“Zo, de Bleym I know will be back now. `ow wonderful!”

“What I’m trying to say is, we need to go back to the hall. The headmaster’s here.”

“Alright, let’s go!” Briane beamed despite the growing tension.

“Have you forgotten, Speedy?” started Michelle. “She just walk out of us without telling us where she is, and what could possibly be more important that we have to go through anxiety just to guess her whereabouts?”

“Seriously, Babe! She’s alr

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Test

Just as the headmaster said, the test took place at the Contour’s Testing Ground as early as seven o’clock the next morning. Since there were only a hundred and six students in the school, there would be about twenty-one or twenty-two students who would take the test every day. This would mean that by the sixth day of the test, they’d just be waiting for the result. With that being said, Blame woke up at six o’clock, her hair looking like a disheveled nest that’s about to explode. Stretching and yawning, her half-asleep eyes bored at the transparent wall reflecting Hail’s room.Hail slept with both his hands resting on his stomach, a blanket covering the lower part of his body. Although she couldn’t see his face, she assumed his features to be innocent while asleep. Most often than not, Wielders managed to look younger and softer when their eyes were closed.Looking at his half-dead body, her heart clenched. Somehow, she saw the hint of Kleint’s existence (a childh

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Result

Spluttering, Z sat abruptly, her eyelids drooping, her visions unfocused. She was wheezing as she tried digesting the piercing light now illuminating the room. It took her a cup of lavender to calm down. As she brushed the sweat away from her body, the woman who tested her sat in front of her, still wearing her mask. Z had to stop herself from shuddering when the woman cupped her cheeks. The feels of her palms were so familiar. It almost felt as though she’d been longing for it. With her brows furrowed, she looked past at her warm eyes and still could not conclude who she was. “Do I know you?” she said even before she could stop herself. The woman just smiled, or at least, her eyes did. “That’s out of question, Ms. Seirt. Let’s go back to the business, shall we?” Breathing rather heavily, Z leaned back at the reclining chair, massaging her temple. “Mind telling me what’s happened?” said the woman, crossing her arm

The shock took a moment to wear off. She knew by now that Michelle’s doubt would increase if she realized she’d been shifted into the other class. Hail’s, Briane’s, Jane’s, and Reigna’s perception might waver one bit because they were sure all of them would remain a Skipper. What you’ve been would always be… at least that’s how they saw it.But there’s no point pondering about it now. After all, the main point of her being there was for the headmaster’s head, and she just has to deal with their doubts as she went. If ever they pose a threat to her plans, they must be moved out of the way.“SWEETIE, LOOK!”Z hurriedly stuff the box and the letter out of sight as Briane barged in, bringing with him a letter quite alike with hers. Unlike the Noble’s, the Skipper’s head used a scented parchment for the student’s letter of qualification. It’s embellished with golden crowns and an eye that featured a shadow’s figure than an iris.“I’m a Skipper!”

  • Shadows of the Lost   Her Closest Link

Z woke up three days after she’d been unconscious. The first thing she noticed was the flat ceiling of her bed. From its corners twirled white linen cloths that flow seamlessly down the ground.Grabbing one of her pillows, she turned and embraced it with a loud sigh. Her room was as big as three apartments combined, enclosed by marble walls that were creatively glued with minuscule diamonds. Due to its glimmering nature, the room was only illuminated by the pea-size flame of three candles standing on a candelabra in the corner. The strange combination of orange and yellow lights was enough to emphasize the glint of the diamonds.Supposedly, these diamonds were to form into a feature quite alike with the princess, but something happened along the way, so it then formed into a galaxy, with the diamond as the stars. From the left wing of the room stood a concave window. It’s embedded with a shadow’s physique that covered up its entirety,

  • Shadows of the Lost   To be a Noble

Z was standing in front of the full-length mirror, wearing a magnificent pleated skirt embroidered with red threads in the corner. It was paired with long dress trousers, a sleeveless shirt with a collar underneath it. In her left wrist rested a crimson vest and a black tie, completing the Noble’s prescribed uniform.“Not bad.”Brushing the ash-gray strands of her hair, she looked around, making sure it was deserted and that the other Skipper’s weren’t looking. In the opposite room, Reigna was busy rummaging the box given to them, while in the room beside Z, Hail was reading on his bed, still not wearing a uniform.Assured she’d never be seen, she stared at her hair, the crystals of her orbs dilating. Her heart was drumming loudly as she willed each strand to overlap the other until she was able to braid it.When she’s already satisfied with the way she looked, she wore the vests but was never aware of how she’d wear the tie. She’d never use

Z screamed when cold water splashed through her body. It was penetrating through her flesh, making her teeth chattered. As she opened her eyes, she made out a blurred outline of a bulky man who’s holding a bucket. She breathed heavily. Closing her eyes yet again, she allowed the dusty and wooden smell to overcome her system. She’s not even caring much about the roughness of the ground as long as she could steer again to a serene slumber.Whatever happened yesterday took a toll on her strength that even after some hours of sleep, she’s still conscious of the soreness and throbbing of her muscles.“Rule number one: Nobles don’t sleep like a lazy brat!”Just after a deep, growling voice spoke, a spark shot from Z’s feet, all the way to her head, making her sit straight, catching her breath, so as the other forty-four Nobles. Just like her, they were all wet, no scratch whatsoever but exhaustingly soaked.“Rule number two: If you’re

For a single week, Z’s life changed drastically. Apparently, a Noble wasn’t a class she could just pass by with; her teachers made sure of that.It was, perhaps, due to what she went through that her system learned to redeem consciousness even before Mister Porche could beat her to it. She got her share of praise from the other teachers she kept forgetting the names but never did she hear it from him. Waking up early didn’t only except her from the punishment, she’s also able to witness what happened to those who slept through their alarm. As early as five in the morning, their Quarter would be filled with the Shadowest’s screams as Mister Porche, with the help of other staff, would splash water after water to those who were still asleep.Somehow, her stay there was bearable; though no one tried to befriend her, she’d been used to such treatment to ever wonder why. She did notice something from the class. For one, they like hovering around, gossip

Z was falling…Falling…Falling…… falling in the depth of nothingness, her screams unheard over the pressure of her fall. She wanted so much to hold on to something, to stop the wind howling in her ears; however, she ended up wishing for death when darkness dominated her vision. And then, her back hit something hard. She gasped as she sat upright, catching her breath, as though she just swam underneath a deep ocean. It was hard for her not to notice the soft fabric of the hospital dress she’s wearing, as it was soaked with sweat. Her body’s still releasing more juices, though. It’s made it complicated to say she’s not bathing.Until she wiped the sweat on her forehead did she realize the wires glued in there. Brows furrowing, she looked around and was highly interested in the beeping sound; it came from a monitor sitting on a high chair, a line moving up and down from there. Beside it was a study table wi

  • Shadows of the Lost   Epilogue

The narrative of Z’s past, present, and future were nothing more than proof that Sylvania’s existence qualified as a catalyst for chaos. In the past, her willingness to show her father that she deserved to be heir to Sylvania’s legacy led her to create a forbidden artifact, which transported Zeniah in the future. It had been branded as murder and she’d been condemned, tortured, and was almost killed in front of the apprehensive Forbinians. Her father proved that he could cut off his only heir’s head if it means upholding the law—his law.In her present, she tried to make things right by being a Phantom that sneaked through the criminal’s midst, put an end to their lives, and bring the peace back where it belonged. She thought she was doing what’s right until her father walked in the path of evil and declared war on the Supreme Council. She was then burdened by the responsibility of killing her father, for the Council believed sh

  • Shadows of the Lost   Back at School

The Shadowests wasted no time. Once Briane handed them the note containing the threat, Z immediately told them to prepare, for they would venture an hour after. Marjorie insisted that the Magistrates searched the area thoroughly once again and persuaded Shiela to go with them to the school. Although she wanted to be the one to go there personally, she thought it unwise to just leave the sanctuary of the field; not now that the Phantoms and Magistrate 12 were gaining power. With a rather hasty good-bye, the Shadowests, Kleint, Shiela, and Granny went inside the carriage as Briane rode the Shorne, and they’re off, the Shorne neighing loudly before galloping away. As they sped South, Z started giving out a lump of bread. It barely had some jam, but, as their stomach groaned, it became rather enough. On and on they went, indifferent to the complaints of their stomach that were now hungrier after the bread. The carriage’s usefulness ended when they arrived at th

  • Shadows of the Lost   Threat

“Blame’s beyond herself! She keeps doing this over and over, leaving us behind. What does she thinks about us? We’re not a damn child! We can fight, too, if that’s what she’s worried about!”It’s been over three hours, but Briane seemed to have not released all of his anger yet. He kept pacing in front of them, talking, more to himself than to Berry and Sloane who were almost asleep in their seats. He took it as an insult to their friendship and betrayal to their trusts that Z didn’t even consult them before rising into action. What more, she brought that Kleint along with her. They just met, and she would trust her life to him? Whereas he, Briane George, has been her best friend for three years, yet he’s the one left behind. What kind of child-reading had led her to such a decision?Berry’s head lolled on his chest, snoring as the cold breeze of dawn ruffled his hair. Sloane, meanwhile, leaned closer to him,

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Last

Waking up with a start, Z just lay there, staring blankly at the bluish horizon. For a moment there, she didn’t know where she was. She allowed the cold breeze to ruffle her hair, feeling its coldness seeped through her skin, deeper to her flesh. It was a matter of how badly her body throbbed that it took her quite a while to notice that something was sucking the numbness on her chest.Z sighed, looking down at what seemed to be a circular rip on her suit of armor. It was small like a coin, though the tube-like blackness almost kissing it was as big as her clenched fist. If it wasn’t for the sensation that thousands of pins were piercing her body, she would have appreciated the ticklish way to which the tube sucked, spewing the dirt in the corner and slowly sewing the wound as it went. The source of the tube came from an almost shapeless shadow sprawled next to her. Its edges curved in every direction, spikes rising and falling from it, traveling from one p

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Mistress of Time

“I though you’ve died with Luis,” said Dark, resigning back on his throne, still not taking his eyes off of the mistress. The mistress shrugged, ignoring Hail as she prowled toward Dark. “It’s so unlike you to underestimate me, my dear, dear Sylvania. I may be a wreck of my former self, but I can assure your misery with nothing but a flick of my thumb. I am, after all, a Goddess; whereas, you’re a wielder, more of a demi-god whose prowess is under my mercy. Don’t you still understand the vulnerable position you are in?”She was swaying her hand in the air, nullifying each of Hail’s simultaneous balls of water and fire attack. Hail stopped for a moment to catch his breath, looking from the mistress to Dark. When Dark wiggled his forefinger, Hail immediately charged toward the mistress, a mad glint in his eyes as flame raged on his right arm and water streamed on the left, forming into sharp swords. However, the mistr

  • Shadows of the Lost   Hail's Legend

It’s been over three hours since Z and Kleint entered the Time’s Dimension. Both of them have a cut on the lips, Z’s forehead bleeding, and Kleint’s hand’s throbbing through all the times his energy-based sword had exploded. Dark barely had a dent on his mask. Despite being outnumbered, his strength was still unrivaled, not to mention that the dimension itself was on his side. He could control every inch of it so perfectly that Z had already relieved Kleint of the clock’s strangling hands for hundredth of times.“We need a plan,” Kleint said under his breath, glaring at Dark who resigned on his throne, caressing it with a smirk.Earlier, Kleint had thought Z was through, what’s with her being down, Dark stepping on her back. But it was merely a ruse to catch him off guard, though it didn’t work because he was able to clinch his fist on her leg just as she attempted a kick at his back.Dark and Z were bo

  • Shadows of the Lost   Father and Daughter

Z spent most of her afternoon sulking in the corner of her tent. She told everyone who ever bothered to check for her that she’s okay and that she needed a little bit of privacy. Again, it was Shiela who made her temper walked out of the line. She was insistent on saying an apology, telling her she didn’t mean to offend her anything. Too many times Z had said it’s alright, but it wasn’t till she screamed did Shiela finally dashed off, still muttering sorry under her breathe.“Are you undecided yet?” said Berry who was standing just at the doorway. He was balancing three pots in his hands and a pail was dangling on his arms.Without looking up, Z wrote her name on the sand, pursing her lips.“Kleint and the others went out for a patrol again. Won’t you go with them? You might be able to see a new light.” He grunted as he bent over to pick the pot that fell over with a rather bouncy sound, groaning loudly as th

For the people you care for and for the people you have sacrificed, you’ll have no choice but to face him head-on, battling such a cruel war in which the consequence would be your loved one’s head served in a silver platter. The end is near. And those who are not prepared to die are the first one to face the Reaper’s terrible wrath… --- Z had never felt more powerful than when she woke with a start a week ago. Her eyes were madly flickering from pea-green to toxic green. A single twitch of her hand made the wooden bed shook and she ended up bouncing on the ground, the bed crumpled into pieces. She swallowed hard as she looked around. The leather-made wall of the tent looked so fragile next to her eyes. Closing it, she tried to steady her breathing; however, a twig cracked way outside. She jerked her eyes open and a hole singed through
