“This is the second time she collapsed, correct?” said Hail absently, his arms crossed.

Granny sighed, scanning her notes. “You appear to be right. The last time she lost consciousness, her brain locked itself to prevent any damage. Right now, however, her heart protected itself. Any more collapse and she’ll actually die.”

Though her voice broke, she tried to ignore it by writing more data in her notes.

“How does it work? This Shraine, I mean.”

It took her a whole minute of silence, translating some of her ideas into words, before looking up. “It is the body’s defense mechanism. Once a Wielder release some of her energy, the system moves in itself to protect what must be protected, which is why whenever there’s an overlap or draining of energy, the mind and the heart itself creates a wall to turn down any possible deterioration. But even this so-called protective system also requires energy.”

“So does this mean, Blame’s just weak? Or this has some

Z glared at Hail who’s leaning against the wall as if he’s got nothing to do with her bruises and burns. Granny applied toothpaste to the reddish and dry part of her skin, which owed her something to scream for. Apart from that, three band-aids were covering the open wounds and scratches on her upper shoulder and two of them were positioned right on her knees. If Z’s not aware of Blame’s and Hail’s relationship, she would have thought he’s trying to kill her. But now it came to this, there’s a high possibility it’s accurate. He’s doubting her identity, after all.“You’ve gone too far, Hail. I told you, haven’t I? Shraine isn’t about being weak or strong. If you’re going to train her, at least do it the right way. It looks to me as if you’re torturing her.”Granny’s features were crumpled with anger that Z didn’t dare complain every time the treatment becam

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Superiors

Mr. Porche gave the team a good beating after knowing how much they’re thinking only of themselves. The point of the exercise was to see whether they’d help each other to get some more flags, but that wasn’t the case. Everyone made their own move, resulting for all of them getting nothing. Z, though closer to snatching one of the flags, was intercepted by Sloane who pushed her and tried to grab the flag for herself. They have a moment of fight, which allowed Mr. Porche to knock both of them. Just like that, they were disqualified, because whoever was beaten would be out. But there’s no one more wounded than Jake who ended up arousing a battle between him and Mr. Porche’s shadow. His brute strength and inferior speed did not affect whatsoever the shadow. In the end, he’s been left curling on the ground with the shadow’s simultaneous punch. Seeing what had become of them, the twins and Anastasia did not dare try to get anything. Though initially, the twins were

  • Shadows of the Lost   Z's Potion Catastrophe

The week had gone by in a bland monotone. No unusual event bothered Z’s days, which, though quite masochistic, she hoped some disruption did occur. Given that she’d stopped being unconscious, she was always to be seen sitting on their chair and cheering her mind to have some motivation with listening to the rant-like discussion of their teachers. Their assessment in Ancientry Shadownian happened to be a prank. Ms. Marietta just wanted to see whether they’d take it seriously or not. Hearing them complain about the studying that had been wasted, she opened her book and started the class at once, satisfied that her subject wasn’t neglected. In Z’s opinion, the grumbles alone wouldn’t suffice as proof for such a claim, because they might be faking it, which she bet they would. Nevertheless, she was glad that the assessment didn’t happen. Yes, she did study, but she doubted her knowledge would be enough to pass her. Shadow Enhancement was no good either. They were

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Cloud in Briane's Fate

The demise of the most powerful class had been foretold when Blame went missing a year ago. Ever since then nothing seemed to have been right for the Skippers. Briane always complained to the teachers why they allowed Blame for a solo mission, which disrupted their classes, as Michelle would then start to argue that it was Blame’s fault for not telling them about it in the first place. Reigna always tried to stop them arguing while Jane would agree with Michelle. In the end, Hail would use his authority to make them go back to their seats, their mouth zipped. This scenario caused the teacher’s distress, owing for most instructors to be distant with the class, which was why, more often than not, their classes were suspended. Now that they have Blame back, they didn’t think she’d be separated from them once again. Even though she’d only been transferred to the Nobles, the fact that she’d never be with them irked Briane. He blamed and cursed the school’s system for putting Blam

Michelle was fuming as she massaged her throbbing head. She just woke up after she humiliated herself by losing consciousness. All the Skippers were at their Quarter’s Dining area, except to the two transfers who were still at the Infirmary. A part of Michelle kept nagging her, telling her that she stooped to the level of the transfers for not knowing her limit, but another part of her understood why such occurrences were to take place. She’s not weak, at least that much would never change. No matter what Mr. Heirt said, however mighty he thought of himself, he’d never get close to the comprehension of the Skipper’s ability, especially hers. Though yes, he did have a point that darkness wasn’t something a Wielder could control. Her mother had always been kind enough to remind her that every single day. “You were darkness itself, didn’t you know?” her mother would say, brushing her hair as they sat in the corner, facing the full-length mirror. Three days had passed after Mr. Heirt beat the best out of the Skippers, and Reigna was assured that she needed to have some will to get stronger. But she’s always been a loser in training. She hated physical activities much as she denied her homework. It’s the one thing that made her a picture of insult from her siblings and even from her mom. Yes, they get along sometimes; however, her mom didn’t approve of her being so unwilling to train. “Physical strength is to be measured by your own willingness to get beyond your status quo. If you’re unwilling, you can drop my subject. Yes, indeed, that’s the best option I can offer you.” The wrinkly and old Mrs. Halcht surveyed the Skipper as they spar, her hands shaking on her stick. She wanted to just stay seated, but her body knew no boundaries. Briane was paired with Hail who, for some reason, was taking the friendly sparring seriously. Both of them already has bruises, but Briane’s forehead was bleeding. Beside them wer

  • Shadows of the Lost   Mr. Heirt's Test

For a whole month, the Skippers have been fighting with their anger to themselves and their teachers. They wanted so much to knock some sense to them, that they’re just learning as well, that to be treated weaklings, as if they’re freshman, should’ve been out of the question. In particular, Briane had loathed the three hours he had to spend with Mr. Heirt. He just had this tendency to be so arrogant that irked Briane so much he desired nothing more but to fight him one-on-one.“Shadows are being that are hard to control. It’s a creature you can’t just get by waiting for it to come to your doorstep,” Mr. Heirt was saying, walking back and forth in front of them, wearing a cloak with golden threads, addressing them as though they’re kindergarten. “To be linked with your shadow, you must train; otherwise, your shadow’s overwhelming power will dominate you, and you’ll say goodbye to this world.”

Briane was staring at the fire crackling at the woods he assembled in the corner. The blended color of orange and yellow were the only ones that illuminate the pitch-black night. There’s no moon and the sky was damped, though now and then, a long streak of lightning would dance at the heaven. But that’s not what’s bothering Briane. It’s the mere fact that he and the Skippers have been out in the field for over five days that irked him so much. They haven’t had a good meal. All they’ve been eating were fruits and vegetables they managed to get at the Forbidden Forest.Looking at his hands, he found the dirt lying on his nails disgusting. He’d never been a clean freak, but he always made sure that he’s well-tended, especially because women wouldn’t look at a man who’s not cleaning himself.“Are you okay, Man?” said Berry, making himself comfortable in his opposite direction.Never in his wilde

  • Shadows of the Lost   Epilogue

The narrative of Z’s past, present, and future were nothing more than proof that Sylvania’s existence qualified as a catalyst for chaos. In the past, her willingness to show her father that she deserved to be heir to Sylvania’s legacy led her to create a forbidden artifact, which transported Zeniah in the future. It had been branded as murder and she’d been condemned, tortured, and was almost killed in front of the apprehensive Forbinians. Her father proved that he could cut off his only heir’s head if it means upholding the law—his law.In her present, she tried to make things right by being a Phantom that sneaked through the criminal’s midst, put an end to their lives, and bring the peace back where it belonged. She thought she was doing what’s right until her father walked in the path of evil and declared war on the Supreme Council. She was then burdened by the responsibility of killing her father, for the Council believed sh

  • Shadows of the Lost   Back at School

The Shadowests wasted no time. Once Briane handed them the note containing the threat, Z immediately told them to prepare, for they would venture an hour after. Marjorie insisted that the Magistrates searched the area thoroughly once again and persuaded Shiela to go with them to the school. Although she wanted to be the one to go there personally, she thought it unwise to just leave the sanctuary of the field; not now that the Phantoms and Magistrate 12 were gaining power. With a rather hasty good-bye, the Shadowests, Kleint, Shiela, and Granny went inside the carriage as Briane rode the Shorne, and they’re off, the Shorne neighing loudly before galloping away. As they sped South, Z started giving out a lump of bread. It barely had some jam, but, as their stomach groaned, it became rather enough. On and on they went, indifferent to the complaints of their stomach that were now hungrier after the bread. The carriage’s usefulness ended when they arrived at th

  • Shadows of the Lost   Threat

“Blame’s beyond herself! She keeps doing this over and over, leaving us behind. What does she thinks about us? We’re not a damn child! We can fight, too, if that’s what she’s worried about!”It’s been over three hours, but Briane seemed to have not released all of his anger yet. He kept pacing in front of them, talking, more to himself than to Berry and Sloane who were almost asleep in their seats. He took it as an insult to their friendship and betrayal to their trusts that Z didn’t even consult them before rising into action. What more, she brought that Kleint along with her. They just met, and she would trust her life to him? Whereas he, Briane George, has been her best friend for three years, yet he’s the one left behind. What kind of child-reading had led her to such a decision?Berry’s head lolled on his chest, snoring as the cold breeze of dawn ruffled his hair. Sloane, meanwhile, leaned closer to him,

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Last

Waking up with a start, Z just lay there, staring blankly at the bluish horizon. For a moment there, she didn’t know where she was. She allowed the cold breeze to ruffle her hair, feeling its coldness seeped through her skin, deeper to her flesh. It was a matter of how badly her body throbbed that it took her quite a while to notice that something was sucking the numbness on her chest.Z sighed, looking down at what seemed to be a circular rip on her suit of armor. It was small like a coin, though the tube-like blackness almost kissing it was as big as her clenched fist. If it wasn’t for the sensation that thousands of pins were piercing her body, she would have appreciated the ticklish way to which the tube sucked, spewing the dirt in the corner and slowly sewing the wound as it went. The source of the tube came from an almost shapeless shadow sprawled next to her. Its edges curved in every direction, spikes rising and falling from it, traveling from one p

  • Shadows of the Lost   The Mistress of Time

“I though you’ve died with Luis,” said Dark, resigning back on his throne, still not taking his eyes off of the mistress. The mistress shrugged, ignoring Hail as she prowled toward Dark. “It’s so unlike you to underestimate me, my dear, dear Sylvania. I may be a wreck of my former self, but I can assure your misery with nothing but a flick of my thumb. I am, after all, a Goddess; whereas, you’re a wielder, more of a demi-god whose prowess is under my mercy. Don’t you still understand the vulnerable position you are in?”She was swaying her hand in the air, nullifying each of Hail’s simultaneous balls of water and fire attack. Hail stopped for a moment to catch his breath, looking from the mistress to Dark. When Dark wiggled his forefinger, Hail immediately charged toward the mistress, a mad glint in his eyes as flame raged on his right arm and water streamed on the left, forming into sharp swords. However, the mistr

  • Shadows of the Lost   Hail's Legend

It’s been over three hours since Z and Kleint entered the Time’s Dimension. Both of them have a cut on the lips, Z’s forehead bleeding, and Kleint’s hand’s throbbing through all the times his energy-based sword had exploded. Dark barely had a dent on his mask. Despite being outnumbered, his strength was still unrivaled, not to mention that the dimension itself was on his side. He could control every inch of it so perfectly that Z had already relieved Kleint of the clock’s strangling hands for hundredth of times.“We need a plan,” Kleint said under his breath, glaring at Dark who resigned on his throne, caressing it with a smirk.Earlier, Kleint had thought Z was through, what’s with her being down, Dark stepping on her back. But it was merely a ruse to catch him off guard, though it didn’t work because he was able to clinch his fist on her leg just as she attempted a kick at his back.Dark and Z were bo

  • Shadows of the Lost   Father and Daughter

Z spent most of her afternoon sulking in the corner of her tent. She told everyone who ever bothered to check for her that she’s okay and that she needed a little bit of privacy. Again, it was Shiela who made her temper walked out of the line. She was insistent on saying an apology, telling her she didn’t mean to offend her anything. Too many times Z had said it’s alright, but it wasn’t till she screamed did Shiela finally dashed off, still muttering sorry under her breathe.“Are you undecided yet?” said Berry who was standing just at the doorway. He was balancing three pots in his hands and a pail was dangling on his arms.Without looking up, Z wrote her name on the sand, pursing her lips.“Kleint and the others went out for a patrol again. Won’t you go with them? You might be able to see a new light.” He grunted as he bent over to pick the pot that fell over with a rather bouncy sound, groaning loudly as th

The end is near. And those who are not prepared to die are the first one to face the Reaper’s terrible wrath… --- Z had never felt more powerful than when she woke with a start a week ago. Her eyes were madly flickering from pea-green to toxic green. A single twitch of her hand made the wooden bed shook and she ended up bouncing on the ground, the bed crumpled into pieces. She swallowed hard as she looked around. The leather-made wall of the tent looked so fragile next to her eyes. Closing it, she tried to steady her breathing; however, a twig cracked way outside. She jerked her eyes open and a hole singed through
