Chapter 45

(THIRD POV)

Vanessa stood still, her hand on the cold brass handle of the study door.

She listened, straining to catch any sound in the silence.

Her heart was pounding against her ribcage, and she felt the rush of adrenaline in her veins.

She took a deep breath, then turned slightly, checking the hallway behind her.

The coast was clear.

She turned back to the door, her hand tightening around the handle.

She knew she had to be sure absolutely sure that she was alone.

She waited a few moments longer, allowing the silence to settle around her.

Then, with a sense of newfound confidence, she slowly pushed the door open, just wide enough to slip through.

Her movements were careful, deliberate.

She entered the room and gently pushed the door half-closed behind her.

Standing in the center of the room, she folded her arms across her chest and observed her surroundings.

The study was dimly lit, with the late afternoon sun glowing through heavy drapes, casting shadows on the floor.
