Soft pinks, purples and vanilla light bounced across the insides of the near empty club as closing time crept in slowly. It had been a long night and surprisingly busy since it was only Wednesday night but, both humans and werewolves had been looking to blow off steam and spend their hard earned cash on drugs, alcohol and young women skimpily dressed and dancing. Even their drinks were brought to them by young females for the lusty men to paw at whenever they pleased.
Luckily for Chloe, she was still on bar duty until her back was fully healed. The Alpha didn't want anyone seeing her injuries because it was bad for business but Chloe was aware that as soon as she was back to full health, she'd be back dancing like a performing monkey or serving drinks while greasy old men groped her.
Sighing tiredly, she placed another clean glass on the shelf as the music was finally cut and the bouncers began ushering the few stragglers left out of the front doors before shutting them and locking up.
"Chloe." The bar manager appeared near the door to the office. "Leave those. I'll finish up. The Alpha has requested you girls in the VIP room."
"Yes sir " Chloe nodded, setting the glass in her hand on the shelf and moving quietly to the VIP room.
Chloe had been in the VIP room plenty. It had been nicknamed the Alpha suite amongst the employees because usually only Alphas could afford the room. It was basically a club within a club with its own fully stocked bar and stage. All of the girls had worked the room by now but less than half were regularly called to service the room. Chloe was grateful she wasn't one of those girls. She had heard the Alpha's could get extremely rowdy and fights had broken out before.
Chloe was one of the last girls to arrive and chose to keep to the back of the gathering in hopes of avoiding the Alpha seeing her. Since his visit, Chloe had been trying to avoid him yet that was proving difficult. Everywhere she looked, he was there, watching with those predatory eyes. There was something there that unsettled the small blonde. It was a heat that left her feeling exposed and on edge. That evening had been no different but now something else thankfully had the Alpha's attention.
"We have some very important guests arriving next week to stay with us for while." The Alpha explained. "That means we will be putting on a party and I need you girls to do what you do best and make them feel welcome. They are your number one priority. If this goes well then we will have new allies and I will make sure you are rewarded. Beta Kevin will be assigning you your tasks for that week."
Guests? Chloe was intrigued. Sure Alphas visited but their Alpha tended to try and keep other packs away in case someone who wasn't in on his dealings cottoned on. Alpha Nathaniel and several other Alphas had made quite a bit of money for themselves by exploiting the vulnerable and lower ranked members of their packs. While the Blue Mountain pack supplied the girls, other packs in on the scheme supplied illegal drugs, weapons and counterfeit money. It was quite the racket the group had going on and no one on the outside had a clue.
So these new people must have something really good to offer for Alpha Nathaniel to pull out all the stops.
"Right everyone back to your room." A guard announced, snapping Chloe from her thoughts.
She turned to leave hoping that was the end of that but a guard quickly stepped in her way, his expression passive.
"The Alpha has requested to speak with you." The guard said in a tone that left no room for argument.
Chloe felt her blood run cold, glancing over her shoulder to see Alpha Nathaniel still talking to his beta about plans for the visit in a week. Perhaps he wanted to talk to her about that? Maybe he needed to do something extra to impress the visitors. It was certainly a loaded theory given that Nathaniel had no qualms in exploiting the girls in his custody.
Instinctively Chloe’s eyes sought out Katie. The tall brunette was still dressed in the skimpy bejewelled attire from her shift, eight inch heels adding to her already impressive height. Behind the thick fake lashes and colourful makeup, Katie’s black eyes were questioning her.
The Alpha wants to talk to me again. Chloe told her friend.
What about?
I don’t know. Maybe it’s about the guests staying next week.
Or the dinner he is insisting you attend with him alone.
“Chloe,” Nathaniel’s voice broke through the conversation, his eyes watching the small blonde. “Come here, please.”
Chloe had no doubt the anxiety in Katie’s eyes was mirrored in her own. Swallowing on the dry lump in her throat, Chloe shuffled forward, breaking eye contact with the tall brunette and fixing her gaze low as was expected of her in the presence of any male especially the top ranking males like the Alpha and beta. By the time she came to stop in front of Nathaniel, all of the other girls were gone and she was left at the mercy of the Alpha who now lounged on one of the back leather wall seats, one arm slung across the headrest while the other cradled a laser cut tumbler filled with ice and a couple of fingers of a dark amber liquid. Beta Kevin had stepped away but was only a short distance away, dropped at the bar going through paperwork while guards were dotted around awaiting any orders the Alpha deemed suitable for them to carry out.
“How are you feeling, Chloe?” Nathaniel asked before taking a sip of his drink.
“Well, my Alpha.” Chloe replied softly, wringing her hands together in front of her.
“Is your back healing? No infections or fever?”
“It’s healing well. The healer said I should be back to normal by next week.” Chloe reported.
“Hm, good.” Nathaniel replied. “But to be sure, I’d like the healer to examine you one more time. I’ll arrange it with him.”
“Thank you, my Alpha.” Chloe knew better than to question anything that the Alpha said. Sure it was odd that the Alpha was insisting on Chloe being seen by the healer again when there was no hint of infection or illness but Chloe would rather not suffer her leader’s wrath again so soon after the last time. “Will that be all, my Alpha?”
“Just one more thing,” Nathaniel replied, his voice sickly sweet. “I would like for you to attend dinner with me this weekend. Saturday evening to be exact.”
Chloe felt her stomach drop. She had been fearing this. Part of her had hoped that when the Alpha brought it up a few days before he had meant it as some empty promise to back up his lacklustre apology. He never invited any of the girls to dinner. They weren’t allowed to attend any of the celebrations or ceremonies. The Alpha explained it was because they were vulnerable being that none of them had their wolves (because allegedly low ranking shifters weren’t blessed with a wolf) but the girls knew better. The Alpha didn’t want his pack to learn about what he was doing to the girls.
“Of course my Alpha.” Chloe managed to get the words out over a heavy tongue. “It would be my honour.”
“Brilliant. Well now that’s agreed, I’ll make the arrangements and let you know the time.” The Alpha replied, clearly pleased. “Donovan, can you please escort Chloe back to her room?”
“Yes Alpha.” A male voice responded from somewhere behind Chloe but she could barely hear him over the sound of her heartbeat drumming in her ears.
Chloe turned to follow the guard that had been called upon but froze when she felt the Alpha's presence rise up and overshadow her. She flinched when a large calloused hand tilted her chin up slowly forcing to look into Nathaniel's steel blue eyes, his eyes shimmering black like the night as his wolf pushed forward to devour the image of the slight she-wolf in front of him hungrily.
"I look forward to seeing you Saturday." Nathaniel spoke softly as his eyes settled back to his human blues. "Sweet dreams."
Chloe couldn't say anything, her heart thrumming madly in her chest as terror flooded her veins. She waited until the Alpha's possessive grip released her jaw before slipping away to follow Donovan, cheeks tinting pink when she saw the amused smirk on the guard’s face. She felt like she couldn’t breathe until she was out of the leader’s sight but even then her lungs felt like they were being crushed under the weight of the panic she was feeling.
“Dinner with the Alpha, huh?” Donovan spoke up when they were outside in the freezing cold. “And only days after he gave you a good hiding.” He let out a whistle of mock appreciation. “What did you do to deserve that?”
Chloe didn’t say anything, keeping her head down. It wasn’t uncommon for the guards to torment the girls. For some reason they took sick pleasure in it but they never went too far. Belittling, the odd unwarranted grope and the occasional prank were as far as it ever went but Chloe had seen the hunger in their eyes. They would do so much more if their loyalty to their Alpha didn’t stand in the way.
“Not going to tell me? Spoil sport.” Donovan carried on, his breath coming out in puffs of fog. “Then again I think we can all work out what’s going on here, can’t we?”
“Nothing is going on.” Chloe replied quietly, relieved when she saw the lights of the packhouse appear against the black backdrop of the night. “I don’t know why the Alpha wishes to have dinner with me.”
“Hmm, but I think you do know why though.” The guard snorted and shook his head.
Chloe’s lips pressed into a thin line as she frowned. She knew very well what the male was insinuating but she refused to rise to the bait. She was a low-ranking wolf and Nathaniel was an Alpha. He had no interest in trying anything with the likes of her surely. Besides, if he was interested he could just go to the ranch. He could have any of the girls there and not even pay for it because he was the boss.
Deciding Donovan was just trying to get under her skin, Chloe picked up her pace wanting to be away from the crude male and out of the cold as quickly as possible. She was grateful when the male didn’t say anything else, following her at a much more casual pace until they reached the packhouse and Chloe was allowed to go to the warm safety of the den.
Saturday came around too quickly.By then Chloe was feeling a lot better although the healer had not been around to check on her again which Chloe hoped meant that the Alpha had forgotten all about their arrangement and she was off the hook. However those hopes were dashed thoroughly when the girls came back from their mandatory workout.Chloe had been allowed to attend this time even if she didn't care much for the routines she was forced to do to make sure her body had the right amount of muscle without looking bulky. Being allowed outside for longer than a few minutes had felt good and even the freezing cold biting at her cheeks until they were a soft pink colour hadn't dampened her mood. They were werewolves after all. Being outside was in their nature even if they weren't able to shift because they were low ranking.
WARNING: this chapter contains descriptions of sexual assault===The room instantly felt too hot and Chloe tried to swallow, her mouth feeling dry. A hand on her naked arm made her jump and she looked up to find Nathaniel towering over her, his eyes lasciviously roaming over her body.“You know, I never found my mate?” Nathaniel suddenly spoke, his voice low. “I searched and searched but after years of disappointment I finally gave up. For a while I was okay with not having a mate, not having a family but as I get older I realise that I can’t run this pack alone and certainly not forever. The pack needs a Luna. We need hope that there is a future…”Chloe knew what Nathaniel really meant. He needed an heir to continue his family’s dynasty and he had chosen her to be
Katie had been waiting for Chloe that night, instantly going into motherly mode and making sure she was okay. The other girls either made sure to stay out of the way or helped with shedding the petite blonde of her dress, helping her to take off her makeup and bringing her painkillers and water when it was realised she was intoxicated. After a long shower and a change of clothes that covered her entire body, Chloe collapsed into bed, too tired to talk about what had happened or what she had witnessed when she was leaving. She assumed she would tell Katie in the morning when she was sober and hopefully feeling a little more clear headed. However the morning came with a flurry of activity. The surprise appearance of the Alpha’s esteemed guests had everyone in a panic. The girls found themselves being woken up early to attend their workout session earlier than normal.
The night had gone without a hitch and an air of relief sank down over the girls when they were released from their duties without any punishments. For Chloe, it had been an unusual evening. After her first encounter with their guests (especially Lucas Wolfe), she was treated as invisible. The experience had left an odd mixture of emotions bubbling within her as she tried to sleep that night. Part of her had been relieved that she had been allowed to disappear into the background as she acted as waitress but it was the other feeling she was experiencing that had Chloe confused the most. Part of her had hoped Lucas would speak to her again. The rich timbre of his voice and the way his hazel eyes had watched her every move had sent a shiver down Chloe's spine. She had caught herself on numerous occasions imagining what it would be like to run her fingers through his black hair or crawling
Chloe adjusted the neckline of the sheer black body for what felt like the umpteenth time since putting it on and let out a shaky breath in an attempt to settle her nerves. The dressing room was empty of life except for her but she could not only hear but feel the heavy bass of music thumping and vibrating through the walls from the club. She had only caught a glimpse of what was going on out on the main floor but it seemed busier than usual for a Monday night. It was almost as if every male wolf from this pack and the next had crowded in and was now taking up as much space as possible leaving little room for the girls to move around. Unsurprisingly, Alpha Nathaniel was in his usual booth, surrounded by his personal guards while glowering like a child who had just had their favourite toy taken from them. Even Beta Kevin wasn’t getting through to him as the Alpha’s steel blue eyes remained locked on the table a few rows in front where all o
Omar appeared to have been true to his word as Alpha Nathaniel never requested Chloe's company and Chloe had been allowed to return to the den with the other girls at the end of the night. She hadn't seen Lucas again once he had let her go and strangely, the rest of his friends were no longer in the main part of the club when she passed by the doors in the back. Then again she had just been so relieved and giddy that she had been able to hopefully help impress Lucas into making a deal with Nathaniel.By the time the girls were back in the den, clean of sweat and glitter and all tucked up in their cots under layers of blankets and clothing to fight off the cold, Chloe had all but forgotten about her meeting with the mysterious British werewolf. Sleep came quickly, pulling her into its warm embrace when her dreams were filled with sultry hazel eyes that would glow gold.
"Lucas!" With Nathaniel and his beta in custody, the rest of the pack had eventually surrendered to the agents. It was amazing there had been no casualties although there were plenty of horrific injuries on both sides. Medics were busy with working out who needed medical attention urgently while agents worked on processing the prisoners and securing them so they couldn't escape or cause any harm. There was still some chaos but the senior agents were able to regroup and take stock of the situation. Forensic teams had moved in to gather evidence and process everything while soldiers flushed out any fugitives trying to run like rats abandoning a sinking ship. Lucas was relieved to have Nathaniel off his hands. Never had he met anyone he hated more than that vile and pathetic excuse for a werewolf. It had been a long night but it was far from over and Lucas had no doubt in his mind that it would be a few more long hours before he could even try and sleep. He had been taking stock of t
It had been three days since the raid and so far, no one had found the girls who had made a run for it. They had simply vanished like ghosts leaving no trace behind. For Lucas it had been three days of frustration. He had been snarling and snapping like a caged up tiger, lashing out at everyone. He argued that without the girls they couldn't class this case as won. They had promised they would help all of the victims of Nathaniel's despicable deeds not to mention that those girls probably wouldn't survive as rogues, which they technically were. It didn't help that his moon-blessed was amongst the missing girls. If he ever found her then he would be making sure that she was never out of his sight again. What was perhaps even more frustrating was that Chloe hadn't recognised him as her mate or, she had pulled off the performance of the century by acting like she didn't recognise the bond. Lucas doubted it was a performance though. He had sensed something off with not just Chloe but w
Just as Lucas had said, Bobby was waiting for Chloe when she stepped out of her room a short time later. The blonde was beginning to get used to the vampire's presence. They seemed to share the same level of shyness as Chloe struggled with, meaning that both were happy to avoid awkward small talk and simply walk in silence. It was just as well because Chloe's mind was focused on something else. The strange dream from the previous evening still occupied Chloe's thoughts. It had differed from the previous dreams and yet there had been enough similarities to lead Chloe to believe that this dream had something to do with the others. She just couldn't figure out what exactly. It felt as real as the others to the point that Chloe could still smell the perfumed air that had filled the den and the heat from the fire. There was cl
Just like the previous times, coming back to reality was like plummeting from some great height into the depth of stormy seas. The surface swallowed her up like the mouth of a giant fish, sucking her down into the maelstrom of freezing cold darkness. It rolled her like a washing machine until she couldn't tell up from down or dark from light. But just as quickly as she had plummeted into that strange void between reality she knew and the reality she had come from, Chloe felt herself being pulled out of the depths. As she broke the surface, Chloe opened her eyes to be met with dim light and something soft and light covering her face. It took a few moments of sleepy confusion to work out that it was her hair that was blocking her vision and making her nose and cheeks tickle. It took a few more moments to realise that the light pouring in was from the morning sun.Pushing her hair from her face, Chloe froze when her blue eyes landed on the face of her male. It only t
The light from a fire jerked and writhed against the heavy stone walls that surrounded the small space. The smooth rock face went up some ten feet before curving inwards to create a ceiling that was painted inky black by the shadows. The naturally formed den was big enough for a small family to congregate. Mats and piles of furs were bundled tidily in one corner while primitive cushions littered the floor strategically. Treated hides had been stitched and then hung over the several exits that stopped this place from being a tomb to being a safe space. A home. The air was warm thanks to the fire in the middle of the room and the smoke lazily floated upwards into the only void of shadows. The scent of herbs and dried flowers fragranced the air, adding to the warmth until it felt like a thick blanket was wrapping around everything. The shadows pooled wherever the light of the fire couldn't get. They bubbled and boiled high above like a canopy of stormy seas. The life force in them puls
"Hm…" "Hm?""Yes, hm."Chloe shifted uncomfortably in her seat, the urge to get up to run and hide squirming inside of her and pawing at her willpower. She felt her muscles tense in order to spring into action freezing only when hazel eyes landed on her, pinning her to her seat. It wasn't malice or disapproval that Lucas conveyed across their strengthening bond but assurance that he wouldn't let anything happen to her. She was safe, even if the old crone currently scrutinising her looked like she had the power to turn them all into dust. Dagmar was silent for a few more seconds before breathing in heavily and muttering a few foreign words. She finally limped over to an overstuffed armchair and collapsed into it, pulling a packet of cigarettes from the pocket of her cardigan. "Well?" Ursula's was as sharp as the eyebrow she raised on her blue eyes, her irritation for the other witch far from subtle and souring the air. "Well, what?" Dagmar challenged. "The girl is healthy. The moon
The tidal wave of shock was quickly followed by anger before a maelstrom of confusion, grief, disbelief and rage cut through the pack bond like a punch to the chest.Chloe felt like the air had been knocked from her lungs and it took everything she had not to be dragged down by the riptide. Hecate’s hold on their body released like a rope snapping under pressure and Chloe was quick to take the reins and shift into her human form. She ignored the biting wind on her naked flesh as her blue eyes focusing on the scene below them. Around her, wolves shifted into humans as everyone let Emily’s words sink in. “Are you sure?” Chloe finally asked Emily, turning away from the gravesite. “I’m positive.” Emily replied quietly, her tone as solemn as the silence that surrounded them. “Don’t you feel it?” The blonde frowned in confusion, shaking her head softly. “Feel what?” “The bond with this place.” Freya spoke up from behind the pair. “It’s difficult to explain. It feels like...” “Coming ho
“You need to move them outside!”Lucas had been trying to help a nurse with one of the girls thrashing violently on a infirmary bed when the rushed voice of his mate rose up above the cacophony of noise. He looked up to see Chloe entering the infirmary, blue eyes wide and lips parted in shock. The noise they had all heard from the small examination room didn’t prepare any of them for what they wound when they entered the infirmary. Even Lucas had found himself shocked and he had seen his fair share of carnage during his time as a police officer and now an agent. However, the look was only there for a moment though before Chloe’s lips pursed together and her eyes darkened with determination.“I thought I told you to stay where you were.” Lucas replied roughly. “If you haven’t noticed, it’s a little chaotic in here!”Chaotic didn’t seem to aptly describe what was currently happening. Lucas was grateful that they didn’t have to also deal with the women and children that had been found in
Despite the pressure of having thirteen werewolves about to go through their first shift and another werewolf critically injured, Ursula looked as calm and composed as a statue. Her cool demeanour when the witch spotted Lucas and Chloe felt like a blast of arctic wind had just barrelled through the infirmary. It was obvious that the frigid welcome was solely for Lucas’ benefit as the towering male’s presence filled the small examination room like an overpowering wave of dominance and strength. Chloe had only seen the pair interact once before but she could already tell that some bad blood ran between them. It was the type that formed between family members or those one might consider family. Their presence was never outwardly welcome by the other but their history, bond and loyalty to each other was what kept the peace. It just didn’t stop the verbal jabs whenever the opportunity arose. “I need you to check Chloe over.” Lucas was straight to the point. “I’m a bit busy here, Lucas.”
Mate. The word reverberated in every ounce of Chloe’s being. Every synapse, every cell, every ounce of her body seemed to light up and sing the word like it was the only thing she knew and understood. Even the golden wolf locked in her mind had joined in the chorus until Chloe’s ears felt like they were ringing from the calamity within her. It felt like hours passed as the shocking revelation knocked the blonde for six, her heart skipping a beat when Lucas raised a rakish eyebrow questioningly at her as if he could hear every thought (or rather, the one single thought) on Chloe’s mind. The world seemed to fall back into place with that. Reality reappeared with a thud and what had felt like hours had only been a few seconds. Those few seconds were enough for Alvaro to depart, leaving Chloe alone with the black-haired, intimidatingly handsome male that now towered over her with eyes that reminded her of the forest and the ocean colliding. It was conditioned instinct for Chloe to run
The inky depths seemed to go on forever with no end in sight. Chloe couldn’t tell up from down. She felt like she was sinking and any attempts to try and swim in the opposite direction simply had Chloe falling further and further into the watery void. Then, without warning, the void disappeared and the world around the blonde morphed into snowy ground and frozen trees. She could feel the snow under her naked feet and the cold wet air caress her skin like the fingers of the dead. Someone had cleared the pavement of snow and under the night sky, the asphalt looked like a river cutting neatly through the white blanket of snow. Orange Street lights illuminated the bellies of the grey clouds that hung above and in the distance were the lit signs of stores and restaurants. Chloe didn’t recognise the place but something in the back of her mind told her this was a human settlement of some kind. It wasn’t in the same state but was also close enough to share the same kind of weather. The shad
