Several flights of dull stairs later, we reached the main floor.

Wide open with an enormous circular light in the center of the common area, it reminded me of the grand body of an octopus with its dimly lit tentacles going in every direction.

Male and female gargoyles, mostly with some shade of brown or dark red wings, bustled around, busy with their jobs. Troy looked at Professor Pops. He winked.

They intended to go through with the plan.

In an instant, Troy shuddered into his dragon form.

The gargoyle holding him jumped back in fear as Troy's body suddenly became very big and scaly. The gargoyles scrambled, looking to Vyne for instructions.

"Get after them," he shouted, taking hold of Laeddin and me before we could escape. Jesse and Rayne fought against the gargoyle holding them, but they couldn't break free.

Faster than I believed possible, Pops climbed on Troy's back and with one giant swoop of his wings, Troy launched himself toward the ceiling. It was probably a hundred fe

"A genie?" The emperor climbed down the steps, too excited to stay seated. "Fascinating! I've heard of your kind but believed you all dead. You must grant me three wishes."Laeddin cleared his throat again. "Indeed, I am the last of my kind. My brothers have all gone." My irritation at Laeddin momentarily fled at the mention of his brothers."And the wishes?" The emperor towered over Laeddin now, but Laeddin didn't balk."I am Laeddin, genie of the lamp, and I can only serve one master at a time.""So, someone else controls you." Disappointment softened the gargoyle's features. Well," he returned to his seat. "I am Jagg, high ruler of Garoth." He lifted his arms in the air as he spoke. "And I demand you accommodate me."Unfazed as ever, Laeddin bowed deeply. "Well, genie of the lamp, tell me who your master is," Jagg said, resting his elbows on the armrests. I shuddered at the tone in his words. If Jagg knew I was Laeddin's master, he would have me killed. There was no doubt about it

Skye appeared followed by Scotch and Rave. "Edge," Skye said, coming up behind him. "We have two mortally wounded. A dozen more have been taken to Avak. Where is the emperor?"Edge turned to face them. "Jagg is no more." "He's dead?" Rave pressed, searching the wreckage that'd once been the throne room. Most of the statues were only missing a chunk of rock here and there, but the statue of the woman with the bird-like wings was miraculously unscathed. She stared down at me kindly and I wondered if her statue was made of a stronger stone than the rest of the castle, or if it was protected by magic."He's gone," Edge clarified. "So he isn't dead?" Her expression alternated between confusion and worry.Edge shook his head. "No more questions, Skye. Not now." He spoke with finality. Skye bowed her head. "Yes, Liege." Amber burst through the rubble and immediately began organizing clean-up crews. Within minutes, dozens of gargoyles began clearing away the rocks and debris. At that pace

"Yeah, great, more magic," I said. Jesse laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Why are you taking me into this horrible mess?""Because you said you wanted to find Laeddin. I saw him. Come on." He took my hand, leading me after him. Together, we maneuvered through the crowd while Graves spoke with Edge. Then the green-clad man addressed the crowd. "I have I had a vision!" The room grew quieter still until only the occasional child could be heard. "In my vision, I watched Edge ascend the throne. He is meant to be the next high ruler of our realm." The group began talking at once. "Can it be?""The wizard cannot lie." Graves weaved his fingers together while he spoke. "Our people will be unified once again. All hail Edge the Courageous!" Just then I saw the genie climb the steps and take his place to the right of the throne. "Laeddin." I waved, trying to get his attention. He inclined his head, letting me know he saw me. "This is ridiculous," I said throwing myself into a chair. I was completely stressed out. So many emotions skittered through me, I didn't know which direction to turn. "We don't have time to be hanging out and attending celebrations. It's already been four days. We need to find that piece of the crown and get out of here." The world would become completely dark in a little over a month and we still needed four more pieces of the crown. On top of that, I needed to find out what happened once we had all of the pieces together. My worst fear was that I'd get the crown and it wouldn't do any good. I'd go against Sharra and she'd finally succeed in taking over my body. If I failed, the world would go dark and everyone I loved would be destroyed. The thought terrified me. I took a deep breath. The first piece of the crown had entered my body after I destroyed the assassin. Now, the only reminder that the crown existed came in the form of a single small diamond in the center of my

The castle buzzed with gargoyles moving about, getting ready for Edge's inauguration ceremony."Excuse me," I stopped one of the gargoyles rushing by."Yes?" She was a small female, and she looked frightened by me. "Can you tell me where the wizard's chamber is?" I tried to keep my voice gentle so I wouldn't scare her any more than I already had. Her eyes grew large. She pulled out of my grasp and pointed up. "Top floor." "Thank you." Jesse and I headed for the staircase she indicated and began to climb. On our way up, I asked, "So what's the story? Why did Edge want to talk to you?" We came to a landing and paused. Jesse went past me and continued up. As the silence lengthened, it became obvious he was having a tough time talking about whatever it was. I made a face before running after him. When we reached the top of the second landing, I tried again. "So?""What?" He feigned ignorance."The new emperor. Edge. What did he tell you?"Jesse went over to a nearby window, hopping up

Jesse and I stood at the base of a gaping cave. I sent out a silent plea to Troy and Pops. If they were here, those two could talk some sense into him. The entryway looked to be a mile wide and half as tall. The water had already risen to just under my knees. "I don't think this is a good idea," I said. "The tide is coming in fast." "We'll just take a quick look around, and if we can't see anything, we'll come right back out."I took a calming breath. "I don't know about you, but I have incredibly powerful vision, Jesse. I can see to the back of the cave. All that's inside is rock, rock, and more rock. Rayne isn't in there. Nothing living is." "I want to believe you." He gave me a pained look before continuing, "But I have to see for myself. I hope you can understand."Sadly, I did. Turned out Jesse was as stubborn as I was. "Fine, how fast are you?" I asked, trying to contain my worry. He shrugged. "Pretty fast." "Awesome, let's race." It was apparent by the look on his face

Rayne raised her head and peered down the steps. "If you try to swim out of here, you'll be dashed against the rocks. The waves are relentless, not to mention there are huge goblin sharks that haunt the cave during high tide." "I'm sure I'll be fine." I had no desire to stay here even one second longer than necessary.Rayne looked at me like I was crazy. "You're saying your skin is tougher than rock?"It wasn't. The issue with the sea glass proved that. "Well, you might live through a goblin shark attack, but you'll be in pieces," Rayne continued, starting to sound more like her usual self. I forced myself not to shudder at the images she conjured. "Fine. When will it be low tide again?"She went past the table and pushed back a fabric curtain. "Not for hours. So why don't you chill out and wait for the water to recede." I walked past her and yanked the fabric from her hands. "Why don't you stop patronizing me and tell us what the hell is going on?" Ha! Now it was her turn to be ta

I finished another shower, dried off, and donned a sea foam green pair of pants and matching bandeau top. I spent a little more time on my hair since it was for the coronation, pulling it high on top of my head before braiding it, then wrapping it in a bun. In between dressing and doing my hair, I went to the window in search of a dragon. Each time I left disappointed. After returning from the cave Jesse and Rayne had gone to his room, promising to meet me at the coronation. I went past his door and listened. It was quiet so I headed downstairs. Throngs of gargoyles talked excitedly as they walked in the same direction. I guessed they were headed to the coronation, so I followed. At the large opening to the throne room, a warrior stopped me. The space had been decorated with a myriad of golden strands, like streamers hanging from the ceiling between the peculiar round lights. The gargoyle turned slightly and bowed. "Welcome, Jasmine of Sharra." His voice boomed through the corridor.

  • Seven Magics Academy   The KPID

That night, after all of the festivities were over and we said our goodbyes, Troy and I went back to the small house that used to be my mother's. Now that Sharra was no longer a threat, the chayot set up a meeting between several of the heads of different countries in the human realm and me. There, with the help of the chayot, we discussed relaxing the laws for supernaturals. Together we came to an agreement and I created a magical system with the help of Heathcliff and several other human scientists. After much discussion, I became aware of the KPID, a supernatural government agency known as the King's Paranormal Inquiries Division. The organization had been tracking supernaturals for hundreds of years, at first in the United Kingdom, but in the mid seventeen hundreds, they'd moved over to America as well. Given access to the KPID's super top secret information, I was able to update and strengthen the magic already in place as well as add some newer, more technical attributes with He

"Are you ready?" I asked. We were standing outside on my balcony. I took Troy's hand as my wings fluttered behind me. My engagement ring sparkled in the midday light and I couldn't help but admire it. Troy had asked Jesse and the gargoyles to create the ring for me. A thick platinum band with vines filigreed on either side leading to the center where sat a delicate jasmine flower made of diamonds and blue topaz."Are you sure you can do this?" Troy was teasing me, pretending to be nervous about me flying him around Sharra. "There's only one way to find out," I said, and leaped into the air. Troy whooped out a holler as he clung to my hands, his body dangling below."Don't drop him, Jasmine. It isn't every day you find someone crazy enough to fall for you," Abrea said beside me, her pixilette wings fluttering gracefully. "True." I laughed and the action felt really good."Jasmine? We need to leave for the wedding," my mom called from back in my room. I rolled my eyes and glanced at

Before I knew it, I was laughing as tears of joy leaked onto my cheeks. He set me on the ground and pushed my hair out of my face, then cupped it in his hands. "I love you vampire girl." "You do?" I believed him, but needed reassurance as my hands curled around his wrists. "More than I believed it was possible to love." He bent his head and gently touched his lips to mine, his eyes still open and on me. I kissed him back, as a gurgle of happiness shot through me. The sweet kiss turned hot and needy. I loved him and wanted him and didn't care who knew it. He pressed my mouth open, deepening our kiss as his arms went around my waist and he lifted me off the ground. "Hey you two?" It was my Mom. I froze and opened my eyes. Troy was watching me again. "Should we tell them?" he asked. I knew he was talking about our engagement. "Now's as good a time as any," I said as he set me on my feet. Troy took my hand and I turned to face the group. "We have an announcement," he said. The

"Do not do this," Christopher said, a look of complete disbelief on his injured face. "You have the power within you to destroy her. You know you do. So why?" I couldn't explain. But I hoped one day he and the rest would understand. If I failed, Laeddin could tell them the truth about the Unknowns, what they had planned. In the end my family would see I made the best choice. The only choice."Silence, Hunter. I'll deal with your insubordination later," Sharra said, sending a bolt of magic at Christopher. He was thrown back, landing against the other side of the cell before falling to the ground with a groan. Chris bared his fangs in anger and jumped to his feet, though slower than expected. "Hurt them and the deal is off," I seethed, facing her, my hands in fists at my sides. She gave me an innocent look. "I didn't do any permanent damage." She crossed her arms, sauntering toward me. "Now then, let's do this."I swallowed, forcing myself to remain calm. My plan would work. It had t

Determination weighed my shoulders down as I traversed the inkiness. As I went, I called out in my mind, using the magic within me to speak with Silindra and Laeddin. At once, my mind was there, in Laeddin's realm, in his library full of books. He and Silindra were there, standing close, reading something aloud. "Laeddin," I said. Laeddin glanced at me, or rather, my mental presence. Silindra looked up as well. "Is it just me or am I seeing Jasmine?" Surprise flickered across her too lovely face. "I see her too - somehow." Laeddin reached out, but his fingers couldn't touch me. I was there, but not really there. "I'm going to Sharra," I said, and looked from Laeddin to Silindra. "The darkness will swallow the earth soon. There is no more time. I need your help now. Please find me." "We're coming, Jasmine," Laeddin said, and took Silindra's hand. Were they a couple now? There was no time to figure it out. Silindra said, "Watch out for my sister. She's tricky.""I will," I said, a

Now that we had nothing to fear, Lirle and I moved quickly and undeterred toward the stronghold. As we went, Lirle talked more about the dragon she liked as well as growing up in the dragon realm. Hearing her talk, I couldn't help but admire the Hollow. It was stark and vast and though it wasn't blooming with all manner of flowers like Sharra, it still held beauty. That night as we rested and ate under a canopy of trees, I was able to witness one of the wonders of her realm. Here, the forest stirred to life at night. Everything seemed to possess a bioluminescence. Trees whose leaves were pink during the day glowed a soft white, like millions of fireflies covered them. Animals I hadn't known were there, insects and little creatures that reminded me of spider monkeys, lit up as well. It was beautiful and a little terrifying. "Why does it do this?" I asked, mesmerized. Lirle took another bite of whatever she was eating. Her lips were luminescent blue like the spider monkeys and I force

He looked up and for the briefest moment, I thought he was staring right at me. No longer angry, but still unsure. Troy spoke: I love you, too, Jazz. He stopped speaking and adjusted his weight, sitting up straighter. They added: Someone is coming. He closed his eyes and pretended to be sleeping. His cell door cranked open and a female voice spoke. "I brought you a friend. Try not to kill each other." Christopher stumbled into the room before turning and flashing his fangs. "You touch me like that again and you won't live to tell anyone about it." His hands were behind his back and black magic held his wrists together. The person he spoke to laughed. It was Sharra.I focused on Troy. His eyes burned into Chris like he would kill him. To Troy, I begged: Please remember, Chris is on our side. He believes in our love too. When Sharra forced me to kiss him, Chris stopped me and freed me from her magic. He's changed and he can help.I hoped that was true. As much as I trusted Chris

"How nice to see you, Lirle." The voice came from a gray dragon with blood red eyes. His sharp and pointy teeth glistened like they held their own light. Huge talons clamped around Lirle from behind, holding her like a sharpened straight jacket. She gasped and struggled but couldn't move. Her captor's clutches were bigger than Lirle's body. The first dragon looked at me. "And you are Jasmine, heir to Sharra and an original vampire. But where are your wings?" He opened his mouth and I thought he intended to burn me to a crisp. Instead his tongue came out and he licked me. Tasting. "Strange," he said. "Gross." I wiped my cheek with the sleeve of my shirt. It occurred to me he was speaking like Abernathy did, with his mouth and not in my mind like Lirle. Perhaps speaking aloud was a skill that came with age. The first dragon pushed through the trees, causing them to snap and break. Then he pounded his tail on the ground several times in a rhythmic fashion while lifting his head. He ro

Lirle took to the air, her attention on the direction where the sound came from. Her whole body trembled. "You're frightened. What is it?" I asked, fighting my own nerves. Lirle's eyes bore into mine and her terror shone brightly as she said: We're too late. The Ondror's magic is upon us. Listen carefully. A dragon's magic comes from the soul. Our greatest weapon is using the weaknesses of our enemy against them by showing them what they fear most. She flew over to the stream before coming back to me and pointing with one claw. Lirle asked: Do you see the soul magic coming?I followed her gaze and squinted until I saw the blackness, traveling like a deadly mist through the trees, and heading right for us. "Can we outrun it?" She shook her head and said: No. It's everywhere. She spun in a circle and I followed her. Lirle was right. It was coming from every direction, like we had a homing beacon on us. She met my gaze and said: You see? Whatever happens, whatever you experience o
