My heartbeat pounded in my temples. I peeked at Odessa to check if she heard it. Her silence forced me to return my attention to the elevator doors. A ding sounded and the doors opened. I blew out a long breath. The bodyguard from the previous day greeted us with a scrutinizing look. I swore these alphas needed some manners.
I brushed past him and down the hall. Voices traveled to us.
Jaxon’s grunt floated in the air. “Stop treating him like a child. He’s an adult. If you spoil him anymore, he’ll get out of control.”
“Jaxon is just jealous,” a masculine voice teased.
Axel’s voice came alive. “You two, stop that. I’m at work.” The tenderness in his tone reminded me of a parent.
“Then, tell him to get lost,” Jaxon whined. I chuckled at the sound. Jaxon often came across as a stringent child. To hear him whine came as a shock. “First, he stays at your place, eats your shit, uses your stuff, and now he shows up at your work unannounced. I’m going to call dad.”
The small group of men came into view. The young man next to Jaxon threw himself down in the chair. “It’s not my fault dad is stuck in the Middle Ages. My parents are the only ones that think being a model is a hobby.”
“What does that have to do with Axel?” Jaxon asked. “You’re getting paid, aren’t you? Rent your own place.”
Axel sighed, rubbing his temples. “Guys, stop. Jaxon, Maxwell can stay with me until mom and dad calm down.”
“But---”
“No buts. End of discussion.”
The young man stuck out his tongue at Jaxon. The alpha scoffed and pushed away the guy’s face. It was a pity I could not see their faces. Their backs revealed nothing.
The guard cleared his throat. All three men turned to us. Axel shot from his chair. Jaxon straightened. The young man observed us, not bothering to care.
“Thanks for coming, Mr. Keiser,” Axel strolled up to us. “Miss. Miry.” Odessa nodded. “Mr. Benedict is in a meeting with the congressman. You can have a seat. He’ll be with you shortly.” He guided us to the long sofa in the corner.
Jaxon disappeared with the young man. Those two looked more like brothers than Axel and Jaxon. I guessed the young man was the youngest brother out of the three men. It had been a while since I saw him. I doubted he remembered me.
I fixed my tie. “Can you excuse me? I would like to visit the restroom.”
“Yes.” Axel pointed to our right. “You can find it through that door.”
I followed his instructions and located two doors. One marked female while the other male. I entered the respective room and locked myself in one of the cubicles. The fresh air helped drown my anxiety.
I closed my eyes, hoping to get this deal over and done with. The next six months were not going to go in my favor. Lucian hated me far more than I disliked him. His demands were going to be out of this world. It would be a miracle to last six months around that psychopath. Regardless, I could not do anything. This was my fate. I had to endure it. Things would be easier if he demanded sex. It would be one night or day and done.
Fuck!
It was okay, Tyrith. I could manage this. It was Lucian. There was nothing he could do to me that I had not gone through already. I---
“…You should leave.” Jaxon’s agitated voice bounced into the bathroom. The bathroom door slammed. “You’re fucking twenty-three-year. Old enough to live on your own. If dad wants you to get a ‘real’ job, then you do it or move out. Simple. That’s what they sent you to college for. Stop using Axel as a buffer.” His pheromones grew more aggressive with each word.
I covered my nose.
“Me? Why would I be using Axel?” The same young man from before. The younger brother Maxwell. Despite Jaxon’s hostile tone, he maintained a chirpy tone. “My big bro is helping me out. Why would I refuse it? At least, I’m not the psycho following my older brother like some lovesick puppy. You do realize he doesn’t need your protection, don’t you?”
“Shut the fuck up, you little shit!”
“Oh, did I hurt poor Jaxon’s feelings? Grow some balls and stay out of my business.”
Jaxon’s cackle pierced through the air. “Your business. In case you lost a couple brain screws, I am your older brother. Your business is my business. Or do you want me to tell Axel you bought a nightclub? What about that apartment building on---”
“You bastard! Have you been digging into my shit.”
“Move out.”
Silence and pheromones filled the air. Black dots blurred my vision. I pressed my hand against my nose.
“Fine,” Maxwell let out. “I guess you would not mind if I told Axel you’ve been spending your nights in a hotel. I wonder what he will find when he goes there looking for you. It’s quite shocking to hear about your double life. The things omegas talk about you. You have some bizarre taste in the bedroom. Will Axel be disappointed? His poor younger brother being an escort for fun. That’s…”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Are you? I am just saying anything is possible. Stop hogging Axel like he’s only your brother.”
More silence.
“Fine,” Jaxon gave in. “But this stays between us. If this gets out, I could lose my job. You know how unforgiving Lucian can be. That asshole gets on my nerves all the time. He might take it out on Axel. And Axel worships that jerk.”
Huh? I should have known Jaxon hated Lucian. He saw everyone around Axel as the enemy.
“Your secret’s safe with me, big brother. Can I assume you’ll keep mine?”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I should have known you would have dug up dirt on me. You were always a sly bastard. Just make sure you report back to me about Axel’s home life.”
The aggressive pheromones petered out. I held in my cough. Any longer and I would have passed out.
“Are you going to pay me?”
“Pay my ass. Isn’t he your brother? That’s the only pay you need.”
Maxwell hissed. “You are no fun. Sometimes I wonder if we are related. I wouldn’t be surprised if mom said she picked you up at the hospital.”
“Ha! The last time I checked, I was the only one who looked like dad. If anything, you are the one they adopted.”
“Whatever. I look like gramps. Handsome and awesome.”
Jaxon laughed. This time there was no hostility. Pure genuineness. “Keep dreaming, kid.”
“Hey, I am…” Maxwell’s statement faded as they exited the bathroom.
I sighed in relief and slumped on the toilet. Axel’s brothers were far stronger than I remembered. Back in college, Maxwell was a small tat. Now, his pheromones were overwhelming enough to make me want to puke. As expected from two dominant Alphas. Axel must be proud. As long as he never found out what they did behind his back.
I never pegged Jaxon to be the escort type. One should never judge a book by the cover. Things like these made me glad Kara was no longer here. I would be pissed if she turned into an escort for fun or indulged in any activity she shouldn’t.
When my legs resumed working, I left the cubicle, washed my face, and joined Odessa. Axel brightened at the sight of me and dragged me with him in into Lucian’s office. The congressman remained in the room. I got comfortable in the seat across from Lucian’s. Ryder made no attempts to leave.
I began, grateful for the company. “I read the contract and found no flaws.”
“No questions?” Ryder arched an orange brow.
“No, no questions.”
“Then, let’s sign,” Lucian saved me from another one of Ryder’s questions. He was the first to scribble his signature on the paper. I copied him. My anxiety intensified at the sight of my signature on the paper. I signed away my rights. This was selling my soul to the devil.
Axel returned and collected the document. “I’ll get you a copy of the signed document.” He retreated. Ryder chuckled and trailed him. My soul cried out for him to stay. He never stayed, though.
I fidgeted in the chair. Lucian returned his gaze to the computer screen. The screen reflected in his gold irises. His peach-colored lips tightened, adding to his grim expression. They must be tired of the same expression every day. I bet they didn’t know how to stretch into a smile. It was a pity such good looks were wasted on such a man.
I exhaled through my lips. “Is there anything else? Do you have any command for me today?”
Lucian eyed me through thick lashes. “Excuse me?”
“We signed the contract. We are both busy, so make a command. Ask me to do something.” I did not have the time to sit here and stare at him. Sick people needed my help. Mayor duties awaited me. I did not have time to waste.
“And what do you think I should ask you?”
I shifted. “I don’t know. Anything.”
“You said that before.” Lucian ignored his monitor and gave me his full attention. “I am sure there must be something specific that you thought I would want.”
I clasped my hands. “Sex.”
Sex.Could you be any more of an idiot, Tyrith? Of all the things, you had to say sex. And in front of Lucian. He was going to think I liked him. God, I wanted to die. How could such a word leave my mouth? Sure, it had been a while since I indulged in such acts. I spent my heat cycle locked in my apartment. My life was fine without sex. At least, I thought so, but to say such a thing. Such abomination. Lucian remained silent, evoking more nervousness. I licked my dry lips. Lucian abandoned his chair. I glanced at the door, calculating the time it would take for me to get to it. Lucian got involved in sports back in college. Judging by his muscular build, he worked out. Me, well, the only exercise I did was run up a few steps a day or rush a patient to the operating room. Nothing too serious.Even if I ran, my escape was not guaranteed. My body went under the previous stress of enduring two dominant alpha’s pheromones. If Lucian released his, I would collapse. If I was not a supreme,
Ryder eased past me to pour himself a glass of whiskey. He gave me the glass and plopped down in my chair. “Should I tell Axel to cancel the rest of your meetings?” He propped up his foot on my desk. “You don’t look like you are in any mood to continue working.”I downed the whiskey with one gulp. “Shut up.”A mischievous smirk slanted his lips. I told Axel not to spy on me in my office. His excuse was to ensure I was always okay. I should have made more fuss about him gaining access to the camera in my office. No doubt he and Ryder were watching.Ryder of all people should not have seen that. I didn’t want to give him any ideas. Things Axel ignored Ryder picked up on. He would often set me up on one date or the other. It was hard to tell what went on in that unstable head of his.I slammed the empty glass on the table and dropped on the couch next to the liquor shelf. This was my fault. I should have reacted differently. It was foolish of me to react to such tedious things. Who cared
Picking up a random alpha at a club was one of my specialties. Once they saw my face or smelt my scent, they were hooked. It was easy for me to seduce this guy. Tall. Sweet. Jovial. Carefree. The opposite of Lucian. He never hesitated when I mentioned my hotel room. Within five minutes we were at the hotel. We made it to the elevator before it closed. The doors reopened and the last person I expected to see perched in the corner with a redhead. I froze for a second too long. A part of me wanted to let the elevator go without us. We could ride the next one. However, my one-night partner boarded the damn thing.I cursed at him and joined him on the ride. Lucian stood behind us. The fact sent my heart pumping against my ribcage. I wished his face were visible. The girl next to him could not have been his girlfriend. I doubt he knew the word relationship. That girl had to be some sort of fling. No scent came from her. Beta. Of course. He wouldn’t dare to touch an omega. The thought irrita
I should have seen this coming. I was the one who signed that contract. He had all rights to prevent me from sleeping around. There was nothing I could do about him. Like an idiot, I allowed him to toy with my head. Like a typical Omega. I bet he was laughing behind my back.I hissed and stomped back up the stairs. Lucian might have won this round, but he would never again.***“Morning, sir,” Odessa presented a cup of coffee. “It’s cappuccino.”I clasped the warm cup and sipped. Cappuccino was my rewarding coffee after a victory. Odessa must have thought I would be in the mood to celebrate. Why wouldn’t she? She booked me a hotel room and expected me to use it to the fullest capacity. It was a pity things went bad. After Lucian left, I never got a wink of sleep. The bed became too large and the suite too quiet. I spent the night finishing paperwork. A sad night for an omega like me. A damn pity indeed. “You look well, sir,” Odessa lied. “Did you have a good night?”“No,” I grumbled.
With Franklin’s help, I was able to get through my surgeries with my brain in tack. On days when my schedule was filled with surgeries, it would leave my body worn out. Not with Franklin present. He helped in every way he could. The students and patients loved him. I could not blame them. Franklin was an alpha with kind qualities and an adorable face. Plus, he was a doctor. Every omega craved for a dependable alpha that would take care of them. Franklin was just that. Back in medical school, he was the life of the school. Everyone looked up to him. Some, if not all alphas, wanted to be him. The alpha to get all praises and omegas attention. Of course, Franklin never cared about such trivial things. He kept his head in books up until graduation. A book nerd was not the right word to describe him. He knew how to have fun and he was always the life of the party. However, he knew how to prioritize his time. His studies came first, and partying lingered in second. He was the one who taugh
“Afternoon,” I greeted Jaxon, holding out my box of muffins. “It’s blueberry muffins.”He accepted the treat and passed me the folders in his hand. Without wasting much time, he bit into one of the delights. His eyes widened as a bit of the creamy filling smudged the side of his mouth. I grabbed a napkin and wiped the spot. He shifted, squinting. A reaction he never got rid of as an adult.“Where’s boss man?” He stuffed the rest of the muffin in his mouth.“At a meeting. His schedule today doesn’t warrant him being in the office.” I tossed the tissue in the bin and went back to the folders. “Did you eat lunch?” Jaxon’s silence provided the answer. He did not. I sighed and pulled out my extra lunch from the drawer.Jaxon had a habit of skipping lunch. He often got immersed in work and neglected himself. Something he inherited from our father. This was why I didn’t mind when he asked to work for me. The Security Company we shared did well because of him. As Lucian’s assistant, I never h
Axel’s call was the last thing I expected. A date with Lucian. I didn’t know what to expect. One thing was for sure. This was a date. Axel made that fact clear. This gave me a chance to show Lucian how amazing omegas were. Axel did say I could do whatever I wanted on this date. Lucian made plans for reservations at seven. Half an hour of eating left us with a lot of spare time. I made sure to pack those free hours with real date stuff.I glanced at my jewelry collection, contemplating if my lace-up denim ribbon choker was too much. It did match my denim shirt. The elbow-length sleeves would shelter me from excess cold. My black jeans stretched no matter where I turned. Perfect for the date I had planned. Yet, my heart raced at the thought of Lucian disapproving of my outfit. It was not like I could look less feminine. It was in my blood. I was a supreme dominant omega. From my voice down to my physique portrayed femineity.Once back in high school, I tried to act masculine. It never w
“I mean, I won the game too.” I shifted the large stuffed animal between my hands. “You got a chance to drag me on the first ride. Now it is my turn to choose, and I want to take a trip down the river cave.”Lucian raked his gloved hand through his hair. “Fine.”The answer caught me a little off guard. I expected him to make a bigger fuss. He often wanted things to go his way.I swallowed the lingering questions at the back of my throat. We strolled in the direction of the water ride area. The majority of them were closed off. No one wanted to do water rides at night. Even more so since most children left with their parents. Teens and adults filled the amusement park. The little children that were left lingered at the food stalls. I guessed they remained behind to enjoy the circus. The line at the river cave was longer than the other rides. Couples loitered, waiting for their turn. I glanced at Lucian, hoping he wouldn’t change his mind. After certain hours, the boat ride down the ri
Ryder slid beside Axel. He stiffened and scooted away from him. A wild reaction. The two had a bond since college that nothing could break. Ryder’s scent relaxed Axel. Ryder used that to his advantage, keeping Axel close. But somehow for the past week, their usual interaction has strained. Axel kept Ryder at arm’s length. And by the deep frown on Ryder’s face, it was a matter of time before he snapped. Ruder had a tendency to be rash when it came to Axel. He liked the idea of Axel being dependent on him. No matter how Axel behaved, their relationship has always been ruled by Ryder. How they met. The direction their friendship went. Up until today, I doubt he told Axel how he planned every single detail of their relationship. Even if Axel found out, he wouldn’t stay mad for long. Ryder had that disgusting personality that seeped under one’s skin and changed their minds. I hated him for it. He could make his worst enemy his best friend in minutes. Whatever Ryder did this time, Axel di
I opened my eyes to an unknown ceiling. The halo glow from the neon light of the rectangular bulb peered down on the bed. I shifted, freezing when my body ached. Bits and pieces of memory returned. Lucian and I on the bed. Us on the floor. In the bathroom. The kitchen area. We did nothing but ate, slept, and have sex. I sat up to find Lucian perched at the end of the bed. “Ryder will be here shortly.” His voice low and dangerous. The same tone he used with me back in college. “You should be showered and clothed by then.” I hated that tone. It was the note he used when I pissed him off. So, we slept together. What was so wrong in helping him through his rut? He should be thanking me. Fucking bastard! I gripped the duvet. “I don’t have any clothes.” The ones I wore were God knows where. Lucian rose to his feet. “There are clothes in the closet. Wear that until you get home.” With that, he walked out of the room, dismissing me. Not even a backward glance. And we were back to bein
Where was he? I checked the time on my watch. He was gone longer than he should have. Lucian had masks made to withstand his pheromones. But this time, his pheromones were out of control. There was so much the mask could prevent. I, for one, knew this. The mask I wore was built like those and there were days when Lucian’s pheromones would seep through it. No matter how much I tried to stay away from him when he was angry, he was my boss. I couldn’t avoid him completely. He would never allow it. I squirmed in the seat. Thoughts of Ryder’s whereabouts clogged my rational thoughts. He could have collapsed. Dominant Alpha or not, he could never handle Lucian. He would never win him in a fair fight, much less one with pheromones. Tyrith did say he would clothe him in his pheromones. The idea unsettled me, but we did not have a choice. Lucian would be furious if we allowed people to die while he was out of it. The last time he ended a life, he… The gloves he wore were a prime example he
Clothed. Lucian’s pants hugged his waist. No shirt. Disappointment washed away my excitement. I couldn’t believe I expected him to be naked. With the thought came another wave of elation. He never touched them. Nothing happened between him and the betas. My pheromones grew stronger. I waltzed over to him, stopping a few feet away. He seemed more composed than I hoped. Instead of gold eyes, he stared at me with black irises, gold sclera with green limbal rings. Beautiful. He tilted his head to the side. I watched Ryder through the corner of my eye. He disappeared into what resembled the bathroom. Then the closet. Done he turned to the five other betas passed out around us. Lucian never moved. He watched me. I stayed put, giving Ryder time. One male laid on the bed behind Lucian. Two females on each side of the bed on the floor. A male in the doorway of the bathroom. Another male near the door leading out from the way we came. I figured he would be the easiest to get out. The two fe
Tucked in the backseat of Ryder’s Nissan Titan XD pricked at my anxiety. It flared at the realization of the direction he drove. He and Axel argued in the front seat. I would have understood their coded talk if my heart managed to settle down for a second. We drove out of the city and passed the suburbs. Things were not right. It made me uneasy. “I lose my mind during my rut,” Ryder announced out of the blue. “I can assume it’s the same for you, Tyrith.” What did that have to do with anything? I nodded. It was one of things ruts and heat had in common. The sexual desire grew to the point where its victim would lose their minds. If one was not careful, they would do the most shameful acts with the worst people. Back in college, one of the omegas in my lecture went into heat and slept with a professor. They were both ashamed of their actions. We could see it on their faces. Eventually, the professor resigned and moved elsewhere. The omega transferred. Heat and rut never cared who the
I collapsed in my chair. The day’s schedule had gotten brutal. Being a mayor and maintaining my doctoral duties was becoming a problem. I had always been a workaholic, but this was too much. My work prevented me from harboring unwanted thoughts. Not this time. Ever since Lucian used and discarded me, my brain refused to shut down. No amount of work could stop it from thinking about the supreme alpha. I blew out a long breath. I was a lost cause. Odessa sauntered into the office with a folder and package. She placed both on my desk. I straightened. “What else do I have on my schedule?” “You have the rest of the evening with Mr. Soy.” Right. We only had a week remaining to get our plan together. Little Sally couldn’t wait forever. I picked up the package and ripped the top open. “I should get going. We both want to wrap this up.” Without thinking, I shook out the contents on the table. A moldy scent jumped out at me. A cloth, a reel of condoms, and a card dropped on the desk. I ho
Go. Devour him. The words twirled in my head and crumbled my other thoughts. I pressed the shirt to my nose. The lavender scent calmed my nerves. The aroma trickled through my body, drawing more heat. The pheromone lessened. The odor was almost gone. I didn’t trust myself if it went away. This shirt was the reason I remained on this couch. My body and mind screamed the same thing. They needed him. Fuck! I never should have let him touch me. Things happened. Now this. “Wow!” Ryder’s muffled voice drowned out my wants. He strolled into the room. A gas mask covered his face. “Your scent has taken over the entire place. This is the worst it has ever smelt. I couldn’t even come through the gate without a mask. What the fuck, man? Are you trying to kill me? I thought your rut cycle isn’t until next week.” So did I. The date of my rut decorated my calendars. It never came before or after its original date. Never. Not until now. Not until I fucking accepted a blow job from that…that…fuck!
I ventured into Ryder’s penthouse, hoping he would be home. To my dismay, he wasn’t. The housekeeper greeted me with a wide smile. “Mr. Brown, welcome. Mr. Rodden hasn’t arrived yet.” I smiled at the beta. “That’s okay, Marsha. I’ll wait.” The slender woman eyed me. “It might take some time. Do you want something to eat or drink while you wait? I made dinner.” “No, thanks. I’ll eat when Ryder gets home.” She nodded and disappeared further into the house. I walked into the living room. Ryder’s place was like the typical bachelor’s pad. Though he was often in a relationship, his penthouse was void of any evidence he had lovers. He had a tendency to take them to hotels instead of his penthouse. I guessed deep down he knew none of them would work out. One thing was certain, Ryder loved himself. Portraits and framed photos of him hung in every room. He had a few photos of his mother on the walls and the living room coffee table. None of his father. He even had a designated wall for he
