We all want to show our best side to that special person. It was almost an instinct that prevented Valeria to reveal her ugly scars to him. However, a contradictory thing it was, he was also the only person she could ever bring herself to be honest with.

“Because I drank too much, I couldn’t defend myself from him. I just wanted to go home. I was so afraid.”

Maybe one day, she’d tell him.

One day when it hurt less… but that wasn’t the moment yet.

She whispered those words in the absolute silence of the hour before dawn, convinced he was sleeping. Then he opened his eyes wide and rolled on the bed to look at her in the face.

“What do you mean?”

Was he a fool that did not put enough attention to what happened around him? Daniel always felt that just doing his part of the job in the company was enough. He was a programmer and did not see it necessary to trouble himself with the administration matters. Moreover, he never thought Will would steal from him.“How could you not notice it before?” His father had asked him.Daniel just shrugged in response.“Let’s not talk about it anymore.”Well, he’d been busy doing his job, and he did go to Cartagena twice in a span of six months. He’d been distracted, and there were few reasons to be alarmed as he kept receiving a good part of his money, but the truth was still the same: he never thought that Will or Lisa (Will’s girlf

  • See You Again Next Year   The way it used to be

She was totally mad at him. This was the first time he wasn’t welcomed with a hug, and if the strength she used to hit him earlier with that ball wasn’t enough proof, then the way she kept smiling through lunch while giving short answers to all his questions about her new job at the school should be a confirmation. That was alright, he probably deserved it. He was a coward. While questioning his feelings for her, Daniel had lost all courage and avoided talking to her, fearing that he’d give himself away. This was not an option when he was unsure about what his next steps should be, because what if he screwed things up? To Valeria, their friendship was just as important as it was for him, but what if she knew what was going on in his mind?&lsq

  • See You Again Next Year   More than friends?

Valeria didn’t let go of her chance to tease her mother, who’d finally be free of them for a few days. “Tell Diego we say hi. Or maybe he can also take you somewhere on vacations since you are a free woman again.”Maybe this was a chance to spend some quality time with her son and have them get used to the changes they’d have in their lives. Her mother had recently talked about moving in with her boyfriend. Diego Ramirez lived in the same neighborhood, just 15 minutes away, but as it had always been just her and her mother in that house, Valeria still felt weird knowing this was about to change. It didn’t mean she wasn’t happy for the woman she loved the most in the world. Diego made her mother laugh and feel young again, that was enough reason to like him. He also had grandchildren and treated Manu as one.

  • See You Again Next Year   Untimely

They waited outside for a few minutes before the taxi got there. Being next to her unable to help her was an awful feeling, and yet Daniel did not ask for her motives to leave the party. Whatever it was, it was bad enough that she marked the wrong number twice, and kept playing with her leather bag strap, adjusting it time after time for no reason.“Finally,” she gritted between her teeth when the car stopped right in front of the house, but she did not get in until he grabbed her hand and opened the door for her. He could feel how cold her hand was because their fingers were still interlocked when they got into the taxi.“Where are we going?” The driver had asked them, and Daniel gave him Luz’s address, only to feel her grip on his hand tighten and see her shaking her head vigorously.

  • See You Again Next Year   Starving Heart

The dark bags under her eyes when she greeted her reflection in the mirror that morning spoke for themselves. Valeria did get some sleep, but only after Luz came back (and her friend came back not long after Daniel had left, worried about what was going on too), and the two of them sat in the kitchen for what felt like hours. The chamomille tea helped, too.“I can’t believe it.” Luz was startled when Valeria told her the man who’d been asking for her earlier was Manu’s biological father. “So you’re going back because you think he wants to meet Manu? If you say he’s never shown interest in meeting his child before, why would it change now?”“I don’t know, but I’m not going to risk it.”“Is he that bad?”

  • See You Again Next Year   Not every ex is horrible. Part 1

This felt completely wrong, Daniel decided, as he kept his eyes on his champagne glass and walked away from Monnie’s snobbish group of acquaintances. The food was still heavenly, and his main reason to be there. Years ago it also used to be fun, he thought, when he had friends around. Now, Long Wei was on the other side of the world raising a toddler on his own, only God knew how, because Daniel spent just a few days with Rosa’s kids or Manu, and being the cool uncle was hard enough. Meili wasn’t around either, because she had a child of her own, and-“Hey, Daniel!” The young man waving his hand and walking in his direction was Jamie, the youngest child of the Lee family. He used to tutor Jamie’s older sister when she was in high school, and this man wasn’t but a skinn

The locksmith finished his work, and he heard Emilia under her breath.“All good now… I just have to start looking for an apartment I can afford to pay.”He wasn’t sure why he was still around, he’d only come back because he forgot his wallet on the couch of her living room after the three of them crashed into Emilia’s apartment barely able to walk straight. But she invited him to have breakfast and it did not seem right to leave her alone when she was evidently not okay, despite everything she could have said the night before.“I have a friend who works as an agent and can help with that. I’ll send you his contact.”She walked to the kitchen, and he followed behind, sitting at the counter and feeling a bit unsure of

  • See You Again Next Year   Like a fairytale

People tended to use the expression "happiest moment in their lives" too easily until another came to top that mark. When it came to the milestones in this relationship, Daniel first thought the happiest moment was realizing he was in love with Valeria, that he’d been in love with her long before he knew it, and she loved him too.Later the happiest moment changed to the second she said yes to his proposal. Again, he wasn’t aware of how much he actually wanted to have that kind of thing he’d seen his parents have until the idea of Valeria as his wife took root and would not leave his mind. She was just something that happened to him.Naturally, others would ask him after the ceremony was over and he’d been sure he would answer that their wedding day was the happiest moment in his life up to t

  • See You Again Next Year   'Where our story begins' Part 2

The day Valeria visited her mother to show off her engagement ring was perhaps one occasion she’d been waiting for a long time, because what Maria did seconds after congratulating her daughter was to go to the shelf of albums on the wall and pick one photo that wasn’t glued to the book.“Look, I just found this yesterday when I was going through the old pictures.”The photo was taken the summer Valeria and Daniel first met. Her grandfather had bought a bike for her, and don Ricardo had tasked the boy to teach her how to ride, taking that picture just before sending them off to go around the neighborhood.“He wasn’t very happy to be here, I remember.” It was written all over his face at that moment captured by the camera.“T

  • See You Again Next Year   'Where our story beings' Part 1

The fact that he didn’t know Long Wei was marrying until a week before the ceremony could be blamed on his friend not knowing that he’d moved abroad. Only when his mother remembered to tell him about the invitation that arrived to his house did Daniel learn about it.By that time, the only thing he could do was to send a gift and call his friend to complain, of course.“You didn’t even tell me that you proposed?”“Ah, that’s because she did.”Long Wei’s future wife was formidable. It was really despicable that he would be ignored this much, when he’d played a great role the days he took care of Aaron and even Danny sometimes, just so that Long Wei could stop agonizin

“A lot of things have changed recently here, haven’t they? I’m sorry for not talking to you sooner, and not seeing how you could be upset. I thought that since you’re already used to Daniel and we all get along well, it was going to be fine.”“I like uncle Daniel.” Manu was grabbing the edges of the blanket and ready to sleep, but his eyes were wide open as he looked at her. “But are you going to marry him?”“Maybe.” She hoped that one day they’d be there. “That is nothing you should worry about. If we marry, then isn’t it like just making him an official member of our family?”“Mom, I love you the most.”Valeria caressed his chubby cheeks, wishing he’d alway

“I was shopping with some friends, and I found him in front of a store. We went to your house, but you weren’t there, and the kid was crying, so I figured out it’d be better to bring him with me until he calmed down a bit.”It felt as if the dark clouds over her head cleared out, the moment Camila called to say she’d found Manu and that he was okay. What were the chances of that happening? And she’d never imagined Camila would call her first, if she knew that her cousin was in charge of Manu that day. Maybe she didn’t know. Either this had been a horrible act from Mateo’s side, which she doubted since the bastard called the police after all, or it was a miracle and she was lucky enough to get her son back in one piece.Valeria barely waited for Daniel to

  • See You Again Next Year   'Love is...' Part 1

“What? When? An hour ago? Why didn’t you tell me immediately?” Valeria hated herself for not picking the phone at the first ring, although one minute wouldn’t change or solve the problem at hand. She knew there was a reason for her to feel uncomfortable with letting Manu go with that man. “You are an idiot. And where are all your ‘men’ protecting my son when he’s with you?!” She hopped into the car, and Daniel put a hand on her shoulder to remind “Ask him where they were when Manu disappeared.” Her eyes were red and her lips were trembling after she ended the call, in part because of her anger, but mostly because of fear. “In the Plaza Mall. But they have looked there

After waiting for a lifetime to confess, and then the person you loved was the one to say those words first, it was like suddenly reaching the very top on the stairway to heaven. He loved her.And yet, that day, and even until now, Valeria found herself not being able to say it back.“Look who’s there waiting for you.” Luz elbowed her when they were walking to the parking lot after the staff meeting ended.Daniel waved his hand at them.“And that’s a really nice car that he got. “Her friend seemed to be especially enthusiastic with the story of Daniel moving to the city and celebrated it as a sign that Valeria would soon be joining the club of

  • See You Again Next Year   Yours, truly. Part 2

Ignoring Rosa’s words, Valeria was actually grateful that Manu could stay with the Garcías that night. It was only six in the evening but she really wanted to sleep, and ten minutes later when they got home, she crashed on the couch.“I know you’re tired, but at least go to sleep in your bed, Vale.”She shook her head. “I can’t get up anymore. Would you bring me a pillow?”He sighed, and she heard his steps around the room but then, very abruptly, she was being lifted in his arms.“What are you doing?!” Valeria’s eyes were wide open, and she held onto his shoulders tightly, afraid of falling.“I’m taking you to bed, and then I’m leaving

At some point, he’d got to look at himself in the mirror, and all of their interactions in the last ten years, and realize just how he’d remained oblivious only because he wanted to.“I think I started liking you when I was… fourteen, maybe? If I didn’t say a word about it, how could you know?”That’s what she said. However, they had been friends for so long, shouldn’t he have seen it?Daniel thought of Leah, and the last discussion they had before breaking up (was it just around two years ago?
