Running water echoed through the room as Dane and Jo headed to the shower. They both needed to clean up, to wash away the exhaustion and tension that clung to them after everything that had happened. They needed a moment together. We had all been glued to one another since finding out, even following her to the bathroom several times. We were all too scared to let her be alone, even for a second.

I could hear the shower turn on, and for a moment, I relaxed into the familiarity of the sound.

But then the unmistakable sound of Jo retching broke that peaceful noise. The sharp sound of her body fighting against the reality of what was happening inside her sounded so damn painful.

Percy and I both flinched at the noise, our eyes meeting. I could see the worry lingering since we learned about the baby.
