Amara

Amara thought her first day was going quite well so far. The only small blip had been Beatrice, who she could not decipher. She had no idea whether Beatrice had taken an instant dislike to her or whether she was trying to get in on the office banter and wasn't very skilled at it. Amara didn't let it worry her. It wasn't as though she would be working alongside her, and all the others she had met had been nothing but nice to her.

She had picked up the diary system, and it was all straightforward stuff. She had put up some emails she had been asked to put up and phoned to set up meetings for Leo for the next week. She had even sat through a short meeting and taken minutes. She had to get them typed up that afternoon and on Leo's desk by the end of the day, and she also had a report to type up.

The job was nothing she couldn't handle, although she knew the pace would quickly pick up once she got her first day under her belt. She was just eating a sandwich with Jess in the kitchen and really liked her. Jess was clever and funny, and they had a lot in common.

"So, how are you finding everything?" Jess asked.

"Good," said Amara. "I've been doing the personal assistant job for years, so I'll be caught up on that in no time."

"And the people? How are you getting on?"

"I've met lots of people. I have a list of names in my head and a list of faces, but I'm not sure they all match yet." She smiled.

"After a week or two, you'll feel like you've known everyone your whole life," Jess smiled at her. "Everyone will know if you can't instantly remember their names."

"I hope so," Amara replied. "I don't think Beatrice likes me much, but luckily, I have her name written down, so at least I won't be able to offend her by not remembering her name." She hadn't really meant to say that. She did not want Jess to think she was neurotic, or worse still, a gossip. Jess smiled, and Amara felt somewhat better.

Jess didn't seem bothered by what she had said. "Beatrice is a little standoffish initially. Nothing personal. It's just the way that she is. After you get to know her, she'll soften a little bit," Jess clarified. "I think she's just a little shy and she tries to overcompensate for it, and it makes her seem a little brusque at times."

That made sense, Amara presumed. There was no reason for Beatrice to dislike her. She had not known her long enough to have offended her in any significant way.

Jess stood up and stretched, and her back popped quite loudly.

Amara tried not to jump.

Jess laughed. "That's my party trick," she said. "And speaking of parties, I have a meeting, so I must dash." She threw away her rubbish and smiled at Amara as she left the room.

Amara thought about going back to her office, but she had only been on her lunch for a quarter of an hour, and she did not want to get a reputation as an ass-kisser. She ate her sandwich and had a sip from a bottle of water. Her thoughts went back to Leo.

He had been nothing but nice to her, complimenting her on her work and making it clear he was available if she had any questions or anything. Amara couldn't help but be suspicious, though. Half of her wanted to just let her suspicions go and move on, but half of her was clinging to them so that in case something did happen, she wouldn't be completely surprised by it. She simply could not bring herself to trust him. She was certain that he was playing some sort of game with her, where he got her to drop her defenses and then went back to his old stunts, undermining her and humiliating her.

If she kept thinking that way, though, she was never going to be able to settle here fully. Amara sighed and dipped her hand into her pocket to pull out her phone. She scrolled through T*****r half-heartedly for a while, then changed over to I*******m, but she wasn't seeing anything. She was just wondering about Leo and whether getting this job was such a great idea after all.

Amara sighed and scrolled through her contacts until she came to James's name. He would be the voice of reason, the one who would tell her to get out of here. She called and waited for him to pick up.

"How's your first day going?" James said instead of hello when he picked up her call.

"Good," Amara said. "But weird."

"Weird how?"

"The CEO I work for. It's Leo Pluo from school. Do you remember him? Only now he's calling himself Leo Joe," Amara informed him.

"I do recall him," James affirmed. "It's been a while since I saw anybody from school except for you, naturally. How's he faring?"

"Well, obviously. He's a multimillionaire."

"Nice."

"James, do you recall how he used to bully me?

"I don't believe he was that much of a bully. He teased you to get attention, and you overreacted and made it worse for yourself."

"Thanks for the support," Amara grumbled.

James laughed. "Oh come on, Amara. I know it felt bad at the time, but it was years ago. We can laugh about it now, surely? You were so touchy about it because you were into him. Other kids said way worse stuff, and you laughed with them."

"I guess," Amara said, thinking. Was that true? Had she made it out to be worse than it really was?

"Wait, is he still doing that?" James asked.

"No. That's the thing. He's been nothing but super nice to me. He even apologized for the way he used to act. Unless it's an act, right? Like some sort of game."

"Or maybe. just maybe. he just grew up like we all did," James said gently.

Maybe. The thing is, James, he's smokin' hot. Hell, he's hotter than he's ever been. How can I be attracted to him after everything he did to me? It's weird, right?"

"The heart wants what the heart wants," James sang.

"Yeah, it's not my heart that's wanting him," Amara replied with a laugh.

"Go for it."

"He's my boss," Amara replied quietly.

"So what? I'd do my boss if he was as hot as you said Leo ended up."

"Would you?"

"Anything. I can always find another job, but hot guys? Thin on the ground, girl. Thin on the ground."

"I have caught him looking at me in a manner that shows that the chemistry isn't returned," Amara went on. "And there is quite definitely a chemistry between us."

"How are you making this seem like a problem?" James asked.

"Because, I don't know. How am I supposed to trust that someone who hated me this much is capable of changing the way they feel about me?"

"Oh Amara, you still don't get it, do you? I'm going to say the same thing I say to you every day in school. Leo does not hate you. He never did. He just wanted attention from you."

"Whatever." Amara sighed. "I have to go."

"Ok. Don't let this whole overthinking thing you do confuse your head and mess up a great job." He hung up.

Amara didn't feel much better. All James had done was make her doubt everything all over again. And then she thought about why he always assumed she overthought everything.

She stood up, put her trash in the can, and went back to her office. She was surprised to see Beatrice sitting at her desk as she approached.

Beatrice looked up in a guilty face as Amara walked into the office. She covered the guilty look with a smile. "Just sending some emails while waiting for you," she said in a rush.

"Using my Laptop?"

"Just testing if it all is working.".

Amara smiled tightly. "Okay. What can I do for you?"

Beatrice pointed to a stack of papers she had placed on Amara's desk. "Mr. Joe asked me to print those out and bring them to you to post to our top twenty clients. Their names and addresses are in the database. Do you need help using it?"

"No, I'm fine, thanks. I'll do it right away."

Beatrice rose very begrudgingly out of Amara's chair. She provided Amara with a smug smile that Amara couldn't fully decipher before Beatrice left the office.

Amara settled again and summoned up the database.

By four o'clock, she had posted the letters, typed up the meeting minutes, and finished the report. She opened the diary app, simply to get used to Leo's timetable for the following day, so she could keep abreast of what was happening. Her heart fell when she looked at the app. All the text was in what she believed could be German.

Shit. What am I going to do now? Amara hesitated for a moment and reached for her desk phone. She would call Jess and have her walk her through how to switch it back over to English. She pulled her hand back from the phone. She couldn't help but remember the way Beatrice had laughed on her tour and told Jess that she would be hearing from her a lot. Amara did not want to be that newbie who could not even look after herself.

She recalled Beatrice being at her station with the guilty expression on her face when she had come back from lunch and smiled to herself. She knew what this was. This was trick-the-newbie time. And she was not going to get taken in and race to Jess. She could figure this out by herself. If she freaked at the first trick, more would come. If she could figure this out and get it sorted out for herself, the newness would pass, and she'd be accepted as one of them.

Amara didn't know a lot about coding, but she knew enough to get into the back end of the system and she knew enough to find what she was looking for. The language tag. There was all this that she did not know—gibberish directions and symbols—and then it. The one that she was changing was simple. Inserted between two quotation marks was the word German. She easily removed it and inserted the word English. She crossed her fingers, clicked the save button, and logged out of the program backend.

A triumphant "Yes!" crossed her lips when she saw everyone revert back to English. She went back to her initial assignment and read about Leo's tomorrow. He was having an early morning meeting and another in the later part of the afternoon. She jotted down a few notes on her notebook of what he'd need for the two meetings, so she could prepare it for him when he needed it.

Finally, she turned off the computer and left her office. She steeled herself for the confrontation she'd had with Leo and she tapped on the glass door.

He smiled and waved at her to enter.

"I'm all done unless you need anything else," she said.

"Nope, good," he said. He gestured to the report that she'd left him with beforehand. "This is actually great, Amara, thanks.".

Amara felt herself blush at his praise. She was going to wear a little more makeup tomorrow. She couldn’t have Leo seeing her blush every time he said something nice to her.

“How was your first day?”

“Good,” she confirmed. “I think I’m finding my feet.”

He smiled. “Give it until the end of the week and you’ll feel like you’ve been here all of your life.”

She smiled and smiled back at him. "So goodnight then," she said.

"See you tomorrow."

Amara returned to her own office and packed up her belongings. She was just leaving when Beatrice showed up in her doorway. She smiled and beckoned her in.

"I just wanted to make sure everything's okay," Beatrice said.

"Everything's fine. Thanks for taking the time to check in on me."

"And you have tomorrow's schedule for Mr. Joe?" Beatrice asked.

Amara could sense precisely which game Beatrice was playing. She wanted to know if she had encountered her handiwork yet or not. Amara smiled and nodded.

"The diary program is working, okay?" Beatrice pushed.

Amara might just keep agreeing by nodding her head, but she believed that she would set Beatrice free from her agony. "It is now," she said. "The coding was a little funky. The text switched into German, but now it is fine."

"Oh. You most likely hit the wrong button or something." Beatrice grinned. "Did you call Jess to have it corrected?

"It's not a button that I accidentally pushed. You have to go in and make the code changes manually. Someone has to have come in here and done that," Amara stated bluntly. "Hazing the new girl and all of that. But no, I called Jess. It was a simple enough problem to solve, so I just fixed it myself."

"Do you know how to code?" Beatrice snapped. She looked very upset that her hazing hadn't quite gone according to plan. Either Jess was right about her and they'd be laughing about this in no time, or Beatrice had genuinely grown to dislike Amara.

"I know many things, Beatrice. Things you would never dream I would know," Amara said cryptically.

Beatrice made that "hmm" sound again and then she walked out of Amara's office. "Well, see you tomorrow then, Amara."

"You sure will."

Beatrice left.

Amara chuckled under her breath. Perhaps working here wouldn't be so terrible after all. Because whether this was innocent hazing or Beatrice attempting to sabotage her, her school years with Leo had taught her one thing. They had taught her how to defend herself and not allow anyone to pull the wool over her eyes.

LeoIt was a week now that Amara had been working at Baze, and Leo thought she was really starting to get into it. She was good at her job, always submitting her work on time and to a high standard, and she had even started to anticipate what he needed and do it before he needed to ask her, which was always a good sign in a personal assistant. She was fitting in well around the office, and everyone seemed to like her. More importantly, she was easing up around him, and he thought she was finally forgiving him and seeing that he had changed. Or maybe that was wishful thinking and she was merely being friendly towards him because he was her boss. In any event, it appeared to be a step in the right direction. As if summoning her by thinking of her, Leo looked up and Amara was standing in his office doorway. She wore a black trouser suit and a yellow blouse. He could not help but imagine himself ripping the buttons off her blouse and ripping it to the ground, pulling her trousers down and

LeoWorking late proved to be a blessing for Leo. He had gotten through a set of those little things that he knew needed to get done but had been putting off in favor of more urgent issues. The office was nearly deserted by around six. It was Friday night, after all, and typically the only ones working late on a Friday night were those who had fallen behind for the week.By age seven, Leo had decided that Amara and he were the only individuals in the building. He had experienced this terrific warm feeling inside himself ever since, and he couldn't help but wonder what would happen tonight. He'd love to get up the courage to ask Amara out on a real date, and he'd even kiss her if she agreed to go out with him. In all honesty, he was hoping for much more than a kiss. He hoped to hold her in his arms and make her body feel great things. He hoped to show her that his mouth, which had once been used to shame her, could make her feel great as well as shame her. He hoped to show her how much

AmaraAmara almost ran from Leo on Friday evening. She couldn't credit how close she had really come to letting her guard down with him. She had agreed to a drink with him, being well aware as anyone that more than a drink was in the pipeline. She had even started to assume that perhaps he had genuinely changed. And then she had gone to his office and caught Beatrice on her knees, seemingly providing him with a blow job.He had denied it—of course he had—but his cover story had been weak. If Beatrice had dropped some documents, wouldn't she have waited until he moved out of the way to actually pick them up? If she hadn't been giving him a blow job when Amara had walked in, it was only because Amara had caught them before she had even started. No surprise that she hated her. The fiasco over her diary show obviously hadn't been some form of hazing. Beatrice had envied Amara. She must have seen the way Leo looked at Amara and hadn't approved, so she had sabotaged her and made Leo questio

AmaraThe office was strangely silent when Amara walked across the lobby. It was after eight, and the other employees had already left for the night. All except her and Leo, that is. He had asked her to work late tonight because there was a special client visiting for a meeting, and he wanted her to take the minutes for the meeting. He hadn't said so, but she knew he was anxious about the meeting. She had sensed that he thought the client was going to cut some of their services. He couldn't have been more wrong. The client had praised Baze over and over and, in turn, had walked in to review an expansion of his business as well as the solutions they would be able to provide for his new location. His biggest concern was data security in the new place, and despite most of the conversation going over her head, Leo had been able to provide a package he loved and he had signed up for it instantly. It had driven their sales on a monthly basis through the roof, and they were now way ahead of

AmaraThe uncertainty was erased from Leo's face. All that Amara saw now was pure lust. His eyes darkened, and for a moment, he locked gazes with hers. She felt her pussy clench just looking at him.He leaned in and kissed her, and this time there was no tenderness in their kiss. Their lips came together in an almost desperate kiss, their bodies yearning for each other. His arm stayed around her waist, and he put his hand on her lower back, pulling her in toward him. She could feel his chest against hers, the hard muscle unyielding. He shoved his other hand into her hair as his tongue brushed against hers. She felt like she'd been unleashed, and her hands roamed over Leo's body, up and down his back and over his ass. All the pent-up desire, the desire to have Leo's hands on her, was coming to the surface, and she had to have him. She had to feel him inside her.His fingers caressed down her body, and he massaged them against her ass. He balled his hands into fists, bunching her skirt

LeoLeo returned home the previous night with a strange mix of elated and frustrated. Elated that something finally happened between him and Amara and frustrated that they didn't have a chance to complete what they had started. He was also a little shaken that she would not even speak to him after. She hadn't even looked at him. But he was sure that he hadn't forced anything on her. She was the one to initiate it, and he recognized that look in her eye when she kissed him wasn't for show. She had wanted him.Now that he had experienced a little taste of what Amara and he could be as a couple, now that he had witnessed for sure that she wanted him like he wanted her, he was more determined than ever to have her. He had tossed and turned most of last night, his thoughts filled with visions of Amara. He had jerked off twice to fantasies of Amara, remembering the sensation of her pussy in his hand, warm and wet with need. It hadn't done the trick. It hadn't released the frustration from h

LeoLeo arrived at the office building and went to his own office. The elevator trip to their floor was a thrill. He couldn't help but remember Amara with his arms around her, her legs on him, his fingers on her clit.He wished to go to Amara the moment he stepped out of the elevator, but he waited a while. He was constantly reminding himself it was so she could get acclimated to her job without being flustered, but the truth was, he was a coward. He didn't want to back down any earlier than he needed to so he at least had a glimmer of hope that she wasn't going to shut this thing down before it even had a shot. He also kind of wanted her to get the flowers first. If he saw them in the trash in the kitchen, then he would be sure of his answer. And if she rejected him, it would be odd and thoughtless of her to be getting flowers from him. If they got there first, then at least it would not be stalker-Esque.He was merely looking out of his office doorway when the delivery man strode by

LeoOne of two things was going on here. Either Amara was in way over her head and messing up and acting out like this to hide them, or someone was really sabotaging her. Leo tended to believe the latter. But who?Tyrant McKinney had been very upset that he had employed her over his advice, but he had been upset with Leo, not with Amara. And for goodness' sake, surely someone who worked in HR would be above this kind of schoolboy nonsense. Leo simply could not think of anyone else who would have it in for Amara. He was going to find out what was going on, though. However much of a solution to this there was, it made no sense whatsoever. It didn't stand to reason that one of his own staff, people he had been labouring along with for years in most cases, would all of a sudden start doing this. But it made less sense that Amara was doing so herself. If she had made a mistake in the diary program, it would have been reasonable for her to approach Jess and ask her for help to correct it ra

The sky over the university amphitheater exploded with early summer light, gold thread through bolts of pale blue, casting a warm, respectful hush over the crowd of people gathered on Liana Coleman's graduation day. Folding chairs spilled across the open lawn in rows, and under the proud gaze of friends, relatives, and professors, students in navy and silver robes rumpled into line. Among them stood Liana tall and poised, her mortar cap askew, her heart pounding not with nervousness, but with the solidity of presence—of being seen, of surviving.Alex Cole stood beside her, keen in his tuxedo with a sharp tail, the merest whisper of a rose in his lapel. His hand brushed against hers as they waited to move up the aisle, and she looked up and smiled at him. The smile was not big, nor showy, but gently radiant. Their fingers brushed, and he squeezed hers. She said nothing. There was no need.Across the lawn, Ruth Coleman and Leo Hartmann stood side by side, all their years of shattered hi

The week after Marcus Voss's capture proceeded in subtle, hesitant means. Spring dropped its green scarf over the Hartmann estate, blossoms unfolding on ancient cherry and oak trees, and new grass scent perfumed the air. Life within the newly renovated manor house hummed with cautious optimism.Liana Coleman went back to college coursework, pacing the campus quad in tailored blazers concealing how exposed she sometimes felt. Her afternoons were filled with lectures in economics and late night sessions in reading, but somehow always in the periphery of her mind was the recovered ledger, the sound of gunshot fire in the alleyway, the phone call that had left her world in half. Every morning, she would awaken to sunlight streaming into her dormitory window and discover the world continued on anyway.Ruth Coleman's office, once a whirlpool of crisis management, now bloomed with reconstruction. She and Leo Hartmann co-chaired board meetings together, their partnership stronger for the tria

Morning dawned in muted grays, the sky a greyish ash and mauve wash. The Hartmann estate slept, its Georgian face bathed in the whispered softness of early morning. The corridors within were still except for the distant hum of a refrigerator and the gentle whistle of steam. Ruth Coleman's stern coffee filled the air in the kitchen as she warmed four mugs with hand-warmed porcelain.Liana Coleman padded barefoot across the tiled floor, silk pajamas clinging damply to her skin. Sleep had left her hours ago—her mind still trapped in the alley: Marcus's scowl, the spatter of rain, the crackle of gunfire. She closed her eyes and pressed palms against her temples, teeth grinding against the ache of memory.Ruth turned, cup outstretched. "You look like you battled the storms," she said softly.Liana lifted the mug, heat flowing into her hands. "I feel like I did," she whispered, telling her mother something no one was eager to hear. "I see his face constantly."Ruth placed a consoling hand o

Rain cascaded down the narrow back alleyway, turning the cobblestones into a shimmering silver stream. Liana Coleman pressed her back against the brick wall, her heart thudding in her ears. Marcus Voss faced her beneath a flickering streetlight, gun drawn and eyes afire with defiance. Every raindrop on his shoulders glittered like shards of glass. The space between them felt impossibly near and broad at once—two adversaries standing on the precipice of final judgment.Liana's own hand on her pistol tightened. Her fingers shook, not from cold but from the rushing of adrenaline. Her gaze met Marcus's unwavering glare, the memory of his brother's rage echoing in her mind. "It's over, Marcus," she said, her voice low but level. "Justice has come."He laughed—a cold, cruel sound. "Justice?" he mocked. "Malachi's dead, and now you think you've won?" A step forward, ankle-length coat billowing. "You have no idea of the destruction I carry."Liana swallowed. "I carry more," she said, her voic

Moonlight filtered through the glass skyscraper façade of Marquette Holdings, Malachi Voss's last shell company, and cast silver rectangles on the immaculate lobby floor. Liana Coleman strode through the revolving doors in the guise of an unpaid summer intern in corporate investigations, her heart racing. Her borrowed ID—"L. Every step echoed through the marble cathedral of hallways.Alex Cole’s voice crackled faintly in her earpiece. “You on line?” he whispered.Liana pressed a finger to her collar. “I’m inside.” She paused beneath a polished directory panel. “The ledger should be on the third floor—suite 312.”“Copy that.” Alex’s tone was urgent, low. “Stay sharp.”She got into the elevator, pressing the button for three. The doors closed with a soft whoosh, and the hum of machinery carried her upward. Spring's gentle warmth crept onto the Hartmann land, ushering in blooms from snowy earth. Weeks had gone by since Leo's near-miss ambush, and the rhythm of life was slowly reclaiming its familiar beat. Yet the rhythm of danger still lay just beneath the surface, and every smile felt borrowed from a future that might still be taken from their hands.Leo Hartmann sat at the head of the boardroom table in the newly remodeled corner office, his shoulder healed but his posture wary. Executives suggested new product lines with restrained enthusiasm as he sat, hands folded on the mahogany tabletop. He flinched occasionally—nothing corporeal, merely a reminder of the cost he'd incurred. When his phone buzzed, he glanced down: Family therapy, 3 PM. He took a breath, preparing for another session in the suite downtown.Ruth Coleman walked down the halls of her foundation's glass-enclosed downtown office, eyes friendly but wary. Volunteers signed grant checks, staff stuffed outreach packets, and

The morning after the gala dawned in crisp stillness. Behind the refurbished corner office's gleaming oaken desk, Leo Hartmann sat, frosted glass behind him reflecting the city skyline. Ruth Coleman stood before him, hands clasped in front of her, morning sunlight glinting on the silver streaks in her hair. Between them was a detailed plan: combining the philanthropic arm of the Hartmann Foundation with Leo's firm under one leadership. The plan would streamline operations, regain investor trust, and redefine the family legacy.Leo's eyes stayed glued to the beautifully typed pages, running with hope and fear. He stroked a finger against his head. "It's wonderful," he whispered slowly, tone resonating within him. "But I'm not sure that I am ready yet." He set the offer aside and pushed back a strand of his hair. "We got too skewed last time around so easily. One adversary—Malachi—had near-murder on its agenda. Sunlight poured through the wispy curtains of Leo Hartmann's living-room-turned-recovery room, motes of dust drifting like promissory draughts through the golden beams. The hard antiseptic of hospital hells had given way to couches and vases of growing flowers, yet the tension was still there—tight wire twisted through every velvet step and braced movement.Leo sat in a worn leather recliner, arm in the sling that supported his broken shoulder, a thin bandage beneath revealing the scar of the bullet. A second, pale and puckered, scar indicated where the attacker's knife had punctured him in the side. Each breath he pulled was accompanied by a wince, as if agony itself had taken up residence in his bones.Across the room, Liana Coleman hovered at his elbow, smoothing a folded blanket over his legs. Winter's grip eased as February rain pattered on the courthouse steps. Days blurred: Liana Coleman slipped out of chemistry class, her backpack heavy with books and court papers, and ran to the family attorney's office. Ruth Coleman sat at the head of the mahogany table, phone to her ear as she marshaled the debut of the Hartmann-Rose Foundation, named for the child the family had lost so many years earlier. Her notion was daring—turn sorrow into mission—and Alex Cole looked over her shoulder, scribbling talking points for the PR campaign.Liana came running in, breathless, her school uniform wet at the hem. She slid into the chair beside Alex and whispered, "Dad's hearing is in five." Alex nodded and passed her a stack of exhibits. Ruth got off the phone and stood, brushing her suit jacket smooth. "Thank you," she said to Alex, voice level. "I have to be there."They filed out of the small conference room, threading through marble corridors to another courtroom. Malachi Voss sat behi
