Aunt Maze’s admission left me speechless, a whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. So it was Mr. Kingston who had made the decision to accept me into the family and not her?

“I…I don’t know what to say,” I murmured, feeling some confusion and betrayal gnawing at my insides. I glanced at the coffee that sat on the table in front of me. I picked it up and took a sip in an attempt to stop the tornado of emotions that had awakened in me.

She reached out, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry, Chris. I know it sounds awful. But you have to understand that I was looking out for us.”

I set the cup of coffee down, it was bitter to the taste, but I did not mind, I needed something strong anyway. “Of course, I understand.” And yeah, I did, but that did not mean that I was not hurt.
