Griffin

Cora’s jaw drops in awe as my parents’ beach house comes into view, its silhouette etched against the setting sun.

The walls, mostly glass, shimmer in the golden light, adding to the spectacle.

The driveway winding its way to the house is paved with luxurious white stones, creating an elegant path. Flanking it, meticulously pruned hedges and trees enhance the grandeur of the approach.

Cora bites her inner cheek as she looks at me. “Is that a marble fountain in their driveway?”

“Mom has a temperature-controlled closet for her clothing, and there’s a massive wine cellar in the basement with a bulletproof door for security.” I grip the wheel tighter as sweat beads on the back of my neck.

Cora toys with the slit that climbs halfway up her thigh. “Wow.”

“We could turn around and head back home. We could order your favorite food and have a relaxing night instead of torturing ourselves through this.”

I want her to tell me to turn around. I want to go back to the safety of our house w

I give her a flat look, though the twitching at the corner of my mouth gives me away. "You know my parents never joke a day in their lives.""I know." Mrs. Cecilia pulls Cora into a tight hug. "Cora, right? I'm Mrs. Cecilia. I've been taking care of this house since before Griffin was born. You're stunning. I knew Griffin would find a gorgeous woman."Cora laughs, a nervous quiver in her voice. "Thank you. What was he like when he was young?"Mrs. Cecilia's eyes twinkle with mischief as the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes deepen."Oh, he was nothing but trouble. He'll claim he was a perfect angel, but he always got into mischief every time my back was turned. His poor nanny had a hell of a time keeping up with him."Cora smirks as she looks up at me. “So, nothing has changed then.”I shrug off my jacket and hang it in the hall closet before taking Cora’s coat. “You keep teasing me and see what happens when we get home.”Cora winks and pokes out her tongue. “Promises, promises.”Mr

As my mother’s face turns a deep shade of red, I realize I’ve never loved anyone more than I love Cora.Maybe this won’t be so bad.Cora sits down in the chair I pull out for her. She takes her napkin and spreads it across her lap. “I think we’re going to hold off on having children for a while. Griffin is busy with the office, and I’m looking into my own ventures. When we are ready to discuss having children, it will be between us.”Dad clenches his jaw shut as he sits down. He glances between us before reaching for his glass of red wine. “And what are these ventures you speak of, Cora? I must say, I didn’t think that you would want to get involved in business after what happened with your ex-fiancée.”“Dad!” I exclaim as I sit down on the other side of Cora, sandwiching myself between her and my mother. He swirls the wine in his glass. “I was just asking a question. Especially if she is going to be connected to our family, I would like to know if my daughter-in-law has a good head o

Cora squeezes my hand. “I’m sorry I pressed you to have dinner with them. I didn’t think that it would go this awful.”I chuckle and spin her around before pulling her back to me. “Are you kidding? Watching someone tear into my parents was great. I’m proud of you for holding your own in there, but I’m sorry that I put you through that in the first place.”Cora reaches up and brushes stray strands of my hair from my face. “You are so much more than they think you are. I hope you know that.”I kiss her quickly before leading her back down the hall. “Let’s go say goodbye to Mrs. Cecilia before we leave. She would be upset if I left without saying anything to her.”Cora grins and nods. “I like her. You should lure her away from your parents.”“As much as I love Mrs. Cecilia, having her work for me would be weird, and she would never let me live down the fact that she used to change my diapers.”I push open the door to the kitchen as Mrs. Cecilia is about to walk out of it with another bot

CoraThe morning after the disastrous meeting with Griffin’s parents, I want to spend the lazy Sunday in bed.She scowls at the house behind me. “I’m angry for you. Everybody should have parents who actually care.”"Well, if we ever have kids, we'll make sure they do." I close the door and round the front of the car, getting in beside her.Cora rolls her bottom lip into her mouth as the car rumbles to life. "Do you want children? I guess we've never talked about any of the important things."I pull away from my parents' house. "I've thought about what it would be like to have kids, and until now, I was sure that they wouldn't fit into my life. But then I fell in love with you, and now the most logical thing to do is build our family one day."Cora beams as she kicks off her heels and stretches out her legs. "I'm glad. I want a big family. I want a house where all the other kids hang out because it feels like a second home."I place my hand on her thigh. “Don’t worry about what my pare

“What is it?”He sits up, his mouth opening and closing several times. “Somebody leaked the story about us to the media.”“Who?” I sit up beside him, leaning into the headboard as my heart plummets to my feet. “The only people who know are your parents, Jake, and Sophie. Nobody else knows the truth about anything.”"Clearly, someone thought payday and ruining our reputations were more appealing than keeping the secret."“Sophie would never. Neither would Jake.” My tone is sharp as I take the phone from his hand to read the article. There are photos of our intimate moments in his backyard, lounging in the sun. I swallow hard, feeling like I can't breathe. "I just need to get through the next hour or so."Understanding flickers in Kaleigh's eyes. "Cora, I'll be sorry to see you go. I can leave early and spend the day with you if you don't want to be alone."Tears well up, and I manage a weak smile. "I'd really appreciate that."Kaleigh nods, standing up. "You go deal with whatever you need to, and I'll get ready to leave for the day.""Thank you for not hating me for keeping this from you. I promise the way everything was written is not the way anything happened at all."Kaleigh gives me a reassuring smile as I grab my bag and head for the door. "I know it isn't. She would hate that kind of life.I don't want her to spend her life miserable. Cora will never fit in with my family, and they will keep harassing her.I'll be torn between them, and she deserves better than a man who doesn't know if he can support her when his family turns against them. The thought of losing her is unbearable, but I fear that's the path we're on. I can’t believe you’re finally doing this.”I laugh, taking my bouquet of peonies from Sophie. “I’ve been married to him for over a year now.”“Yeah, but this is the real deal.” Sophie wipes away a stray tear. “We’re all so happy for you.”The doors open, and Jake strides inside. “How’s my favorite sister on her wedding day?”I hug him tight. “I’m good. Does this mean they’re ready to start?”Kaleigh nods as the wedding planner gives her a thumbs-up. She gives me a quick hug before hurrying away with Sophie.Jake stands beside me, holding out his arm. “Mom and Dad are sitting in the front row, and they haven’t stopped crying since we got here.”“Jake, please,” I blink my eyes a few times before looping my arm through his, “You’re going to make me cry.”“You look beautiful

Couldn’t keep your hands off me,” I tease.Cora rolls her eyes playfully. “Sure, keep dreaming.”“We’ve got an hour before everyone arrives for the barbecue.” I park the car in the driveway and hop out, leaning back toward the open door to look at her. “You coming to celebrate with me?”“I’m coming.” Cora nods eagerly, hurrying inside.I follow her, kicking off my shoes as the door closes behind us. The moment Cora steps away to gather her toiletries, Sophie steps in front of me, her finger wagging in my face."You put her through the wringer when we were younger," she hisses, checking over her shoulder to ensure Cora is out of earshot. "Then you break her heart, and now you're back for a third round? If you hurt her again, nobody will ever find your body.""I'll help with that," Kaleigh chimes in, entering the room with Jake trailing behind her. "The truck's loaded up from the storage unit."Sophie prods me in the chest before backing off. "You're skating on thin ice, Griffin Blake. But she loves you, and I can see how much you love her. Only a man completely devoted to my best friend would dare set foot in this apartment after serving her divorce papers just weeks ago."Kaleigh nods enthusiastically and heads to the fridge, yanking it open to retrieve a bottle of champagne. Gloria’s deep burgundy lips curl as she turns to face her son. “Really, if you must lower your standards, at least find someone decent.”“Enough!” Griffin’s voice is louder than I’ve ever heard, his gaze blazing with rage. “I told you to leave my house, and I meant it. I won’t have you here, and I won’t be part of your lives anymore. I’m done living a puppet life!”Gloria crosses her arms, cocking a hip to the side. “Griffin—you’re going to regret this.”Griffin gives a bitter laugh. “No, I don’t think so. It’s what I should’ve done the moment I became an adult, and I definitely should’ve done the moment I found out you two were behind leaking the story about Cora.”My blood boils as I glare at his parents. How can his parents hurt him so much?Griffin looks at me with an expression I can’t quite read before brushing by all of us and holding the door open wide. “Mom and Dad, you can both leave now. It doesn't feel like home.I miss having my own space, like Griff's house... But thinking about that just brings on the waterworks. I shove the laptop aside. How can I focus on a business when there's a divorce waiting for me?Sophie walks into the room as I’m about to review the papers again.“Please tell me you’ll sign those and then take whatever you can get from him.” She says.“I don’t want his money. "That's not the point, Griffin." Jake rubs his temples. "She loves you, damn it. You married her, you started a life together, and now you're just ending it like it's nothing?"I slam the mug down on the counter, some of the steamy coffee sloshing over the side and onto the back of my hand. “For fuck’s sake.”Pain blooms as I spin and cram my hand under the tap, turning on the water and letting it run until the sting subsides. I wrap my hand up in a towel before cleaning the spilled mess. When I’m done, I look at Jake, tightness spreading in my chest. “Do you really think that leaving Cora was easy?”“You sure make it seem that way.”I sigh. “No. It’s not. It’s hard as hell, and I feel like I’m climbing a mountain with the weight of the world strapped to my back every fucking day.”Jake’s brow furrows, the lines on his face deepening. “None of this is making any sense. Your relationship got leaked to the media, so what? Nobody cares.”I bite my cheek, trying to figure out how much he

GriffinI shouldn’t have sent Cora those divorce papers. Instead, I should have told her I was a fool and begged for another chance. It's been five agonizing days since I had an associate deliver them to her. Deep down, I know it was the right choice, but that doesn't stop thoughts of Cora from haunting me.I keep telling myself that splitting up is for the best.Cora deserves better than my family's constant insults and belittling. They treat her as if she's inferior just because her life isn't picture-perfect in their eyes.I sigh heavily and push myself off the couch, surveying the empty bottles of whiskey and beer scattered on the coffee table. They've been my companions, helping me numb the pain and get through the sleepless nights. My father's voice echoes in my head, reminding me of my failures and how I'll never measure up.But tonight, I can't drown out the ache in my chest or the memories of Cora's smile.I wish I could just erase my parents from my life. It's a thought that

When we arrive, Kaleigh sits at a table with a cheese pizza and a couple of beers in front of her.She grins and raises her beer to me. “It’s nice to see that you’re returning to the land of the living. We’ve missed you.”“I make no promises to stay here long.” I slide onto the bench seat beside her and reach for one of the other beers.Kaleigh smiles and takes a sip of her beer. “That’s understandable. All of this seemed to come out of nowhere.”Sophie sits down across from us and snags a slice of pizza. “That’s because he is an idiot with too much money who’s used to buying his way out of any hard situation in life. Now that he can’t, he is running away like a scared child.”“I don’t think that’s all of it.” I grab a slice of pizza and take a bite.Children laugh and race by our table, heading for the rows and rows of games. Loud music pounds through the building, making it nearly impossible to hear anyone more than a few feet away.Kaleigh shrugs, her expression thoughtful. “I don’

As if it couldn’t get any worse.”Sophie cracks a smile and pushes my feet out of the way, sitting down on the end of the couch. “Cora, you weren’t even this upset when you caught Victor cheating on you.”I give her a flat look. “What I had with Griff was different. It meant so much more, and now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with myself.”“It doesn’t have to be over. You could storm his house and talk to him again—insist he’s wrong.”"Yeah, and look like a fool begging for a man who clearly doesn’t want me the way I want him?” I scoff and sit up, running a hand through my hair and trying to work through some of the tangles.Sophie takes the pillow and throws
