Clara's POV
"How could James did that to you?” Emma asked. “He is a jerk."
She's my only friend, the first person I call as soon as I step out of my uncle's house. No one from my family has reached out to me in the last few days, but I’m not surprised since they’ve never really been there for me.
No one cares where I am or what I'm doing. But I was thankful I still have Emma. She stayed over and gave me some support.
"Because the love of his life has returned, so James wants to end our marriage," I said.
Emma grasped my hand firmly.
"I know you can stop loving him and get through all of this, Clara; you are truly one of the most resilient people I've ever known."
"Thanks. I will start looking for a job from now on." I've realized that I can no longer rely on James.
"I need to take care of myself and the baby-" I promptly shut my mouth. Nearly let it slip!
"What do you mean? What's baby?"
I shook my head. "Forget it. I sometimes say nonsense. Tomorrow we leave at 8, right?" I change the topic.
Emma informed me that a car exhibition is scheduled for tomorrow, and they are seeking sales promotion girls. This is a great opportunity for me to earn some income to support myself.
I have experience working in a restaurant and have also taken on a role as an event model during my free time, so I believe I will be well-acquainted with this job.
"Yes, now get some rest. You look like a ghost. I don't want you to get sick." Emma said then we went to bed.
The following morning, after breakfast and donning the provided uniforms, we arrived at the location.
I stood for hours in my shoes and kept a smile on my face for the customers. Time flew by. We also had some heavy things that needed to be moved. As noon went by, I started to sweat. My legs felt stiff, and I had a deep pain in my back.
I lightly rested my hand on my belly, overwhelmed by a profound sense of guilt.
'Mommy is so sorry, darling; because of me, you have to endure this' I wish my little one could feel my words.
Ten minutes later, a crowd formed in one area as customers began to gather. I noticed everyone start pulling out their phones to capture images and videos of someone in the moment.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Hmm, it looks like there's a customer who's a famous person maybe. This is a common occurrence at exhibitions catering to rich people. It must be a public figure or someone influential with business."
I moved closer to see who had arrived.
People were pushing and shoving, and I felt elbows jabbing into me as I instinctively wrapped my arms around my stomach protectively.
"Mr. Morgan, could you please tell us who this beautiful lady is? Is she your girlfriend?"
My heart sank upon hearing that. As soon as I saw the person who had everyone's attention, my heart beat twice as fast.
It was James. And he looked so handsome in his dark gray suit, holding the hand of a woman who was none other than Zoe, who was dressed in an elegant dress of a matching color. They exchanged warm smiles and occasionally responded to the crowd's inquiries with a friendly demeanor.
"Meet Miss Zoe Sinclair, soon to be Mrs. Morgan," James said with a smile.
James has never looked this joyful before, particularly in my company. Standing side by side, the two of them look like a couple made in heaven.
"But, Mr. Morgan, aren't you married already?"
"That's a fake rumor; James is not married yet. He has faithfully waited for me, the love of his life, and now we will soon be married." This time it was Zoe who answered.
Whispers started to circulate through the crowds.
"You've never seen James with the woman you believe he married, have you? Well, that's because she's never existed. I am the only woman he loves and will marry." Zoe added.
All this time, James had kept me hidden, as if I were something to be ashamed of. Aside from our family and those closest to us, no one was aware that he had married someone from a lower class like me.
A gasp slipped from my lips before I could stop it, and I quickly covered my mouth with my palm.
The people in the crowd and James were both too busy to notice, but Zoe's eyes found me in the crowd of faces. She looked shocked for a moment, but then a sneaky smile cracked her red lips.
"James, this one looks so good. Would you consider getting it for me as our wedding gift?"
She pointed to a metallic silver saloon car in the corner.
"Of course, baby, anything for you," James answered without hesitation.
"Thanks, hubby." Then she gives James a long kiss on his cheek.
Zoe's gaze was full of satisfaction as she looked back at me. James still hadn't noticed me.
That's when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Clara, isn’t that your husband? Who is that woman with him?"
I spun on my heel and rushed off.
When I reached the bathroom, I collapsed onto the floor, tears streaming down my face as I wrapped my arms around my legs.
"Why do I have to see them again?"I hate this! I hate myself for being so emotional. Yet it feels like I have no control over my feelings.
I know they will get married, but seeing them look so affectionate gives me this much pain.
When my sobs began to subside, I rose and splashed my face with the water from the sink.
I stared blankly at the woman in the mirror, dark circles framing her eyes and her complexion strikingly pale.
No, I can't let myself drown in sadness.
"No, Clara. Weakness is not an option. Show them that he doesn't define your happiness and that without James you wouldn't lose your smile."
I convinced myself once again. I have to be strong. For the sake of me and my baby.
I was about to return when someone appeared right in front of me. Zoe, wearing a pleased expression and a victorious grin, assessed me from head to toe.
"Good uniform Clara. It suits you perfectly."
Clara's POV"Oh, I don't mean any offense, but honestly, I was surprised to see you here in that ridiculous outfit. By the way, what are you doing? Do you work as their sales girl?" Zoe chuckled softly.I noticed the sarcasm reflected in her gaze."Whatever I do is none of your business, Miss Sinclair. Excuse me, I have to go back." I cut her off; I didn't want to have any conversation with her.But Zoe stopped me just as I was ready to leave her. She raised her left hand in front of my face, and the breathtaking diamond ring that was on her finger immediately drew my attention."Call me Mrs. Morgan." She said with delight, "Isn't this beautiful? This is not our official wedding ring, but James insisted I purchase it. He said it would look very beautiful on my finger."The ring was indeed gorgeous, with a large diamond that sparkled brilliantly. The cost must have been very high. I held my clothes tightly, the weight of my wedding ring still resting on my finger. And It was just a coup
Clara's POVKeith and I were both shocked to see each other here. From what I know, he was in charge of a international branch of Morgan's business group. He lives with James' grandfather. When did he get back? "Oh, hey Keith." I greet hesitantly, placing the drink on the table, "When did you come back?" "Yesterday." Keith offered a comforting smile that instantly eased the tension in the room. “Great to see you again, Clara. How are you? Are you with James now?"I know Keith noticed my uniform, yet he chose not to ask about it. I understand he wants to avoid further awkwardness and I genuinely respect him for that. "I'm doing well." I turned to Bill. "Now may I excuse myself? Some things need to be tidied up in the back." And as soon as he nodded, I quickly made my way back.Once the exhibition concluded and we wrapped up the cleaning, I was ready to head home with Emma when I noticed a sleek black Mercedes Benz parked in the lot. I squinted and spotted Keith gesturing at me.Af
Clara's POV"I'm talking to you, Clara; answer me. Have you gone mute?" James' tone was intense. When I dare to meet his gaze, all softness has vanished. His gaze was filled with nothing but disdain and revulsion as he looked at me."I-" I wanted to tell him that he had no power to stop me from leaving, especially since he had already made it clear that he chose Zoe.Did he forget what happened between us at the restaurant? But I felt like my lips were sealed tight."Hold on, I invited Clara because I thought you'd appreciate this, James; it's supposed to be a surprise. What happened between you two?"Keith glances back and forth between me and James, a look of confusion on his face.James didn't spare him a glance; his gaze remained fixed on me while I felt lost where to start. My pregnancy, Zoe's presence, our divorce..."Take it easy, love," Zoe put her hand on James' arm; she tried to soothe his anger. It did work. His expression softened instantly."I'm sure we can solve this pro
Clara's POV"Oh James, my head is spinning, and it hurts," Zoe complained, pressing her temple where it had collided with the table. "I'm sorry, Zoe. I didn't see you at all," James calmed her down while trying to check on Zoe's condition. The moment James's demeanor shifted completely when he talked to Zoe, it felt as if I had been hit by a bolt of lightning, leaving me utterly speechless. The only thing that brought me back to awareness was this ache in my stomach. A wave of anxiety washed over me as I remembered the condition of my baby at that moment.'Stupid me! I have endangered my baby again!'"Are you alright?" I felt Keith's hand on my shoulder as he helped me stand up. Keith asked as he noticed my hand that was gripping my stomach tightly. "Where does it hurt?""My belly... I think it hit the table a little hard.." I responded with a stutter, trying to suppress the intensifying pain. Not long after, the waiters and a man who seemed to be the manager of this restaurant hurrie
Clara’s POV"I will, Clara. I promise this secret is safe with me." Keith finally said though I know his heart weighed down"Promise?" I extended my pinky. We sealed it with a pinky promise. We chuckled, realizing how we had transformed into little kids."I love seeing you laugh." Keith said. "Clara, may I touch your belly?"I nodded at his seemingly innocent demeanor. Keith placed his hand on my belly as if he could sense the baby moving inside."You can't feel it yet, Keith; at this moment, the baby is just about the size of a strawberry." I smiled, yet there was a heaviness in my heart, knowing that this moment belonged to James, not his brother."When will I be able to feel it move?""That's a few more months to go."Keith responded, "I'll be here when that day arrives, Clara."A few days later.I was relieved Keith at least kept his promise to keep my pregnancy a secret. This morning, after enjoying breakfast and preparing for my job interview at a famous bakery, I heard Emma hav
Clara's POVZoe finally noticed me in the doorway, her expression silent, yet she shot me, 'Are you surprised to see me here?' look. How could I have possibly missed the fact that I would likely see her again if I returned to this house?"Oh, you're finally here. Thank you, Eda, for bringing her to me, even though I had to wait for quite a while. Now you can leave us." Zoe saidEda seemed unsure, but in the end, she left with a look of regret. I fixed my eyes on Zoe; what new plan was she concocting this time?"So this is your new assistant that you hired, Zoe? Are you sure you still want to hire her? She's already late on her first day. Imagine how awful her performance moving forward."Even though Zoe's friend spoke in a low tone, every word was distinctly audible to me."And are you sure you want to hire such a young and beautiful housemaid? I don't mean to fan the flames, Zoe, but you know cases of bosses having affairs with their maids are quite common."I clenched my fists tightl
Clara's POVZoe's arms wrapped around his neck while his hands settled at her waist, pulling them closer together. The squelch of lips meeting filled the air, and in that instant, I wished I was deaf. My cheeks burned at the sight before me, but the most disturbing feeling was the tightness in my chest.'I don't love him anymore' I told myself. As they pulled away from each other, and James finally noticed my presence, I acted as if I hadn't seen a thing."James, check it out, look who's here," Zoe said, pointing in my direction."Don't forget, you were the one who invited me to come and discuss something."I said my intention before he assumed I wanted anything beyond the return of my apartment rights."Of course, I remember." He said nonchalantly."Wait, you two have something to talk about? What is that? Why do I know nothing about this?" Zoe glanced between James and me, her expression filled with intrigue about what we were up to.Seriously, why is this woman so invested in ever
Clara's POVZoe's expression changed immediately upon hearing that; it was obvious she didn't want to sit at the same table as me. I’d rather skip dinner entirely than eat with them."James? Are you serious?" She asks.James took her hand and held it tightly "Of course, honey. What seems to be the issue?""Nothing, it’s just that this should be a moment for the two of us, right? Why must Clara join us as well?""Aren't we usually invite Eda to eat together as well? Does that disrupt our moment? Of course not, so what's the difference if we invite Clara too."James' answer confirmed my position in their eyes and that Zoe shouldn't worry at all. His words eased Zoe, evident in the smile that graced her lips."Ah, you're right. What are you waiting for, Clara? Have a seat and serve yourself, I know you're hungry too." Zoe remarked before redirecting her attention to her meal.I took my place in the seat opposite them but left the meal I had made untouched. No matter how hungry I was earli
Clara's POVNew York CityWe’ve been here for a week now since coming over from Paris. Even after that week, I still can't seem to get back into my work routine. I still feel anxious about leaving Layla alone like I usually do. My day starts with waking up, driving her to school, and then picking her up again when school is done.I just can't trust Dain to drive Layla anymore. James got us a bodyguard, but I said no. I just can't get comfortable with the idea of another stranger being close to my daughter, even if it's someone James trusts.I stepped into the apartment and shut the door behind me. Diana called earlier to say she would swing by after work, so I figured I’d prepare some snacks for her. "Layla you can change your clothes before grabbing a bite to eat. I'll whip up something for us to eat. Auntie Diana will swing by later too.""Okay, mommy." My daughter hurried to her room.In the meantime, I headed to the kitchen. I checked the cupboard and fridge to see what ingred
Clara's POVThe following morning finally arrived. The gentle sunlight poured in through the hotel window. I stretched my body and, getting up, walked over to the window. I drew back the curtain and looked out. The view outside my room instantly woke up my tired eyes.'What a beautiful city.'Of course. I'm in Paris right now. The wide array of buildings featuring beautiful classic architecture, the balconies of the apartments lining the street, and the lively hustle of the street below create a lively atmosphere. I think I have become so accustomed to the rigid vibe of New York that being here truly amazes me.I know I’d have a better time if we were here on vacation instead of trying to rescue my daughter from someone who attempted to kidnap her. With a sigh, I made my way to the bed."It's time to wake up Miss Sleepyhead, we're heading back today. We have to catch that flight."Layla extended her limbs. She let out a yawn for a moment, and when she replied, her voice carried a lin
James' POV"Where is Clara?" I asked Arlo as soon as we got into the hotel. "She's in her room already, sir." I headed straight to Clara's room. I and Clara stayed in the same hotel but in separate rooms for sure. There’s so much I want to say to her right now. But the main thing was that I wanted to check in on her and Layla to make sure they were alright. When the police arrested the car where Layla was kidnapped, I didn't have the opportunity to check on her because I was too focused on Keith and Zoe.I got to Clara's room, but the door was firmly shut. I was just about to knock on the door when a thought crossed my mind—Clara probably didn’t want to be disturbed. Perhaps I should give her some space with her daughter.Following this traumatic event, she must be feeling hurt and deeply affected. Maybe she would like to have some time alone with Layla without any interruptions. I dismissed the urge to see or talk to her and turned and walked to my room, which was across from her
Clara's POV"Mommy?"I quickly grabbed Layla from the car seat and pulled her in for a hug. She wrapped her arms around me in return. I caught her saying that I could have squeezed her too hard with how tightly I was holding her.But I was scared that if I loosened my arms around her, I might lose her for good."You finally arrived. But why do you have police with you?" Layla whispered gently as I gave some space.A wave of relief washed over me to see her unharmed. I, still caught up in my relief and still cannot believe that we were finally together again, didn’t respond to her. That's when Layla's next words grabbed my attention. "Why is one of them putting cuffs on Uncle Keith?" It was only at that moment that I understood what was going on around me.The police that arrived with us, surrounded the car. I heard a woman scream coming from the car. One of the police is taking Keith' out of the car. His hands are already gathered behind his back and is secured in cuffs. An overwhe
Zoe's POV"Zoe, bring Layla along with you," With that, Keith turned and walked away, heading to the living room. I went after him right away. No. I really don't want to handle this fussy kid all by myself. Since we're in this together, he should be ready to pitch in and share the responsibility. I'm not going to let him walk away so easily. “Keith, hold on! Where are we headed exactly?” I reached out and grabbed his arm. "You didn't tell me anything."It really bothers me that he doesn't include me in the decisions he makes. "We have to leave right now. Arlo mentioned that James had arrived in this city. We have to leave now; he could take Layla from me at any moment."I scowled. Arlo's hanging out in the living room. From what I recall, that man has always worked with James. I'm not sure why he suddenly turned to take Keith's side and said that James was there. Something feels off, and I can't shake the feeling that this might be a setup. I need to warn Keith to be cautious be
James’ POV"I've been waiting for him to at least leave the apartment, but it looks like Mr. Keith isn't going to take the little girl out, sir," Arlo called me on the phone.I sealed my lips tightly. This isn't a good news. If that's true, how can we possibly get Layla back? Keith has set up strong security measures in his apartment. He even brought in guards for his protection. "Did he find out that I got here?" I asked. If Keith already found out I'm here it might explain why he is hesitant to leave his apartment. He could be hiding. But, how long he intended to stay in his apartment forever? Paris could be just a brief layover, and he might take off to who knows where next. I need to be aware of every detail regarding his movement."I don't think so, sir.""Is Layla okay?" I asked. Because that's the most important thing. To make sure Layla is alright."According to the report from one of the staff who regularly brings them food, yes. She spotted the little girl, and she was al
Keith's POVParis, France. The shrill screams were so disturbing that I couldn't focus on my work. I shut my laptop, stood up from my chair, and walked out of my study. I made my way to the only place the sound could be coming from, the TV room. And just like that, I spotted Zoe and Layla there. Layla's screams filled the space. She hadn't stopped fussing since we touched down here. And Zoe, who was utterly incapable of handling a task as simple as soothing a fussy child, just sat like nothing happened. Ultimately, I had to take charge of the situation since Zoe just couldn't manage anything properly at all.As I approached, Zoe gestured that she was done dealing with Layla. I exhaled deeply. In this mission, I assigned her the simplest task while I took care of everything else. I took care of our getaway from the country. Ensuring that neither the police nor James' crew would catch sight of what we were doing. I just put her in charge of Layla to ensure she remains calm for an exte
Clara's POVI locked my eyes on James, watching his expression shift from panic to a pale, speechless state.I overheard their conversation, and he asserted that Keith was the one responsible for my daughter's disappearance. Part of me wished I had just misheard it, that James was just making things up. Of all people, why Keith? Why him?"Clara I-" James gulped. He looks to be deeply troubled by uncertainty about what to say. Diana nibbled on her nails, her eyes flitted back and forth between me and James.“You said you would fly to Paris to bring my daughter back since Keith is the one responsible for this? You want to go there by yourself, without me." I said what I had heard about his earlier conversation with Diana. An intense surge of anger hit me. I’m the mother of Layla. I won't just sit back and let James take care of this on his own. "I'll give you both some space to discuss this," Diana said, and then she turned around and walked away, leaving us by ourselves."Can we head
James' POV"Zoe left on the same day Mr. Keith departed the city, sir." Dain gives his report. "What?" I blurted it out, could barely wrap my head around the fact that Zoe was gone as well. For a moment, I could only remain quiet. I didn't need any more proof to see that they were working together. Keith is taking Layla out of the city, and Zoe is involved. I hold my phone so firmly. I had never thought that my brother could do something like this. Since the first moment I first saw Keith and Layla, I felt that he genuinely cared for her. I never thought that he would stoop so low and take a step like this."It happened right after the last time when she crossed paths with Mrs. Clara at the restaurant," Dain said.I didn't respond. I came to understand that Zoe's actions were influenced by more than just her last encounter with Clara at the restaurant. I recall our final argument on the day of our divorce when she mentioned that she thought Clara and Layla were the reasons for our
