Clara's POV

It was so easy for James to hurt me like this, without caring about my feelings at all. The door opened, Keith's gaze locked on me, and then to James.

He walked over and then pulled me to his side, distancing me from his brother.

"Don't touch Clara James, you just want to hurt her. Don't you know that Clara is-" Keith paused for a moment.

My heart was beating twice as fast, he almost revealed to James that I was pregnant.

James turned his attention to his brother "This woman has tried to hurt my wife. And anyone who dares to hurt my wife will have to deal with me."

Keith stole a glance at Zoe, who immediately placed her hand on the spot where her shoulder had grazed the glass, her face turned into a look of pain and hurt.

But it seemed that it wasn't easy to fool Keith. Keith turned to me instead, he examined my condition as if to make sure that I was okay. When I smiled, he gave me a reassuring nod as if to assure me that he was on my side.

He offered a cold smile, while Zoe made every effort to appear warm and likable to the old gentleman"Happy birthday Mr. George, It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person. James told me how thoughtful and compassionate you are, and it truly feels like an honor for me to attend your birthday celebration." Zoe said with a sweet smile plastered on her face. But Mr. George didn't spare her any attention, he didn't even thank her. He looks confused and displeased as he looks at his grandson. "Who is this lady, James? Why did you bring her to my birthday party?"I think since they started dating, James has yet to introduce Zoe to his family, which explains why his grandfather appeared not to recognize her. Well, given how Mr. George is very strict when it comes to accepting new people into his circle, James must be waiting for the right timing."Grandpa, let me introduce you to Zoe Sinclair, my wife. Clara's POV"I swear I had it on tonight; I never really take it off, you know. I take it along with me no matter where I am." James' mother's voice wavered.Behind her panic, I could see a guilt stemming from the fact that the necklace had been a gift from James's father to her.So losing it, a cherished gift from her late husband, must have been so heartbreaking for her.In that instant, our previous conversation faded away as everyone in the room quickly focused on what Mrs. Iris Morgan said."I have to find it. I can't live without it.""You must have dropped it somewhere without realizing it, Iris." Said Mr. George. "You've been busy welcoming our guests since evening."But Mrs. Iris only shook her head, and I could see tears beginning to well in her eyes."No father, I'm sure I'm not that careless."Zoe, who was standing beside James, moved to take her place beside Mrs. Iris and offered a sympathetic smile. She rested her hand on the elder woman's shoulder and said reassuringly.

Clara's POV"No..." the words slipped out before I could stop them.I wasn't denied that the necklace didn't belong to Iris' Morgan, but the fact that it slipped from my clutch felt like an unseen force had struck me. How come?Mrs. Iris's words, along with my own, drew everyone's attention directly to me."Yes, it is! This is the necklace my husband gifted me." She exclaimed hysterically.Zoe immediately handed it to her carefully. "You thief! You steal it from Mrs. Iris, didn't you?" Zoe's face once filled with sympathy, instantly shifted to disgust and anger as she point her finger at my face."Oh for God's sake, but how is this possible? How did Mrs. Morgan's necklace end up in Clara's bag if she didn't steal it? Clara, how do you explain this to all of us?"Her question, which I had no idea how to answer, hung in the air as everyone waited, their impatience palpable, making the weight of the moment feel almost unbearable. Which is me.The crowd would be overwhelming, and just the idea of it feels suffocating."Hey, what's wrong? Do you not like it? If you don't want to be interviewed I'll arrange so there would be no coverage at all." Keith said, he must have seen the shift in my expression.I shook my head.I hoped to meet their expectations. I would present my best self; however, the idea of being the center of people's attention stirred an uneasy sensation within me.But I convinced myself that I didn't need to be afraid. They were not present to pass judgment or lay blame on me. I had no concerns at all."No need, I can handle it."Keith smiled at my answer "Good. Clara's POV"Ma'am, are you alright?" Diana asked, touching my shoulder.I was snapped back into reality. I shook my head, dismissing all the questions swirling in my mind. "Yeah, I was just daydreaming.""Are you afraid that what happened yesterday will happen again? That Mr. Morgan going to be angry again?" She asked. After that incident, I had to warn Keith that if he did anything like that again, I wouldn't let him see me or Layla anymore. I think it's effective cause he grew more and more composed."I've talked to him. Keith promised it won't happen again.""Confusing isn't it? Sometimes men are more complicated than us women." Diana murmured, and I realized I was completely engaged in hearing her next words. "Sometimes rather than acknowledging their jealousy, they create a dramatic situation that will only prolong the problems."I turned to her and said. "But there's no way Keith is jealous, Diana. I was done meeting with a client and was on my way back to my apartment when the vibrant scenery outside drew me in. I was here in New York for business matters and some vacation. It's been quite a while since my last visit, and I might swing by the Morgan Corp office, the one managed by my brother Keith."The weather is quite nice today, sir. Are you sure you want to head back to the flat so soon?" Dain asked.I gazed at the azure sky. James' POVThe night to have dinner with Clara has finally arrived. I spent three hours getting ready, feeling pretty anxious, searching for the right word to persuade Clara to go along with this trip. This would be a good chance for me to connect with my daughter and learn more about her. And a chance to resolve what happened between Clara and me. No, I didn't expect her to just forgive me so easily. I just expected her to be more open to me.'Good luck trying to win her heart.' Keith's words rushed into my thoughts, and once more, I felt disheartened. I grabbed my phone and chose to call Dain. He accepted it a moment later. "How's it going, sir? How's everything going?""I haven't even gone yet. Do you think she’s going to give me this chance or not?" I hate sounding like a downer. But I really need to hear from Dain because he was the one who noticed Clara's reaction when she got the invitation to her apartment yesterday. Clara gave her agreement the very same day. She texted m

Clara's POVWe headed to the airport this morning around eight and got there about thirty minutes later. I ensured we arrived on time so Lily wouldn't have to wait. Yeah, my cousin is alive here in NYC today. Lily mentioned it to me in our call just yesterday, saying she planned to surprise me."Clara!"I glanced over at the voice, spotting Lily rushing toward me. With a smile, I hurried over to her, and we embraced tightly. Lily wrapped her arms around me so tightly that I could feel my ribs nearly being crushed."Hey take it easy Lily! I can't breathe!" I coughed."Sorry. I’m just really excited to be here and see you again!" She exclaimed after we released our embrace. Lily then turned to Layla, who was standing beside me. She bent down to hug her too. “Hey sweetheart, it’s so great to see you again. You've grown so much." Lily asked when they let go of their embrace, "Do you miss me?" "Absolutely Auntie!" I think it will be easy. But I've been reconsidering how Clara has managed to provide everything Layla needed, and my daughter is certainly not missing out on anything. So, I need to choose something unique and special.Something that will bring her joy when she receives this gift I gave her. I just wanted to see her smile again, to wipe away the sadness. It was annoying to see her sad, and I just couldn't stand it. "Hmm, I think this might be a little too much, sir. And besides we have to wait a few more years until she can drive the car on her own?" Dain looked at me with a puzzled expression. He glanced at the picture of the pink Mini Cooper on my laptop with a raised eyebrow and said, "I don't think this is a good idea." Clara's POVNew York CityWe’ve been here for a week now since coming over from Paris. Even after that week, I still can't seem to get back into my work routine. I still feel anxious about leaving Layla alone like I usually do. My day starts with waking up, driving her to school, and then picking her up again when school is done.I just can't trust Dain to drive Layla anymore. James got us a bodyguard, but I said no. I just can't get comfortable with the idea of another stranger being close to my daughter, even if it's someone James trusts.I stepped into the apartment and shut the door behind me. Diana called earlier to say she would swing by after work, so I figured I’d prepare some snacks for her. "Layla you can change your clothes before grabbing a bite to eat. I'll whip up something for us to eat. Auntie Diana will swing by later too.""Okay, mommy." My daughter hurried to her room.In the meantime, I headed to the kitchen. Clara's POVThe following morning finally arrived. The gentle sunlight poured in through the hotel window. I stretched my body and, getting up, walked over to the window. I drew back the curtain and looked out. The view outside my room instantly woke up my tired eyes.'What a beautiful city.'Of course. I'm in Paris right now. The wide array of buildings featuring beautiful classic architecture, the balconies of the apartments lining the street, and the lively hustle of the street below create a lively atmosphere. I think I have become so accustomed to the rigid vibe of New York that being here truly amazes me.I know I’d have a better time if we were here on vacation instead of trying to rescue my daughter from someone who attempted to kidnap her. With a sigh, I made my way to the bed."It's time to wake up Miss Sleepyhead, we're heading back today. We have to catch that flight."Layla extended her limbs. She let out a yawn for a moment, and when she replied, her voice carried a lin

I and Clara stayed in the same hotel but in separate rooms for sure. There’s so much I want to say to her right now. But the main thing was that I wanted to check in on her and Layla to make sure they were alright. When the police arrested the car where Layla was kidnapped, I didn't have the opportunity to check on her because I was too focused on Keith and Zoe.I got to Clara's room, but the door was firmly shut. I was just about to knock on the door when a thought crossed my mind—Clara probably didn’t want to be disturbed. Perhaps I should give her some space with her daughter.Following this traumatic event, she must be feeling hurt and deeply affected. Maybe she would like to have some time alone with Layla without any interruptions. I dismissed the urge to see or talk to her and turned and walked to my room, which was across from her

But why do you have police with you?" Layla whispered gently as I gave some space.A wave of relief washed over me to see her unharmed. I, still caught up in my relief and still cannot believe that we were finally together again, didn’t respond to her. That's when Layla's next words grabbed my attention. "Why is one of them putting cuffs on Uncle Keith?" It was only at that moment that I understood what was going on around me.The police that arrived with us, surrounded the car. I heard a woman scream coming from the car. One of the police is taking Keith' out of the car. His hands are already gathered behind his back and is secured in cuffs. An overwhe

No. I really don't want to handle this fussy kid all by myself. Since we're in this together, he should be ready to pitch in and share the responsibility. I'm not going to let him walk away so easily. “Keith, hold on! Where are we headed exactly?” I reached out and grabbed his arm. But, how long he intended to stay in his apartment forever? Paris could be just a brief layover, and he might take off to who knows where next. I need to be aware of every detail regarding his movement."I don't think so, sir.""Is Layla okay?" I asked. Because that's the most important thing.
