Maxwell’s POV

Scarlett stepped back from the door, her eyes darting to mine with a mixture of curiosity and unease. I offered her a gentle smile, hoping to ease her nerves. Clay and I entered, glancing around the small, modest room. It was simple, far from the opulence she must have known in the South, but she seemed to find peace here. Her expression was calm, as if grateful for the small space and its quietude. She didn’t need luxury; she needed a haven.

“Scarlett,” I began softly, wanting to break the silence, “when’s your next birthday?” The question made her eyes shift away, as if she knew why I was asking. If anything between us was to bloom into something deeper, she’d have to be of age, and we’d have to wait until then. I felt an odd impatience twist inside me, wanting to skip ahead to a time when there’d be no such barriers.

“Four months,” she replied, her voice low, and I nodded, feeling the weight of those four months like stones in my chest. But I’d wait. I had to wait. So

Scarlett’s POVThree days had passed since Maxwell and Clay arranged for me to have my own room. On the surface, it seemed like a small, kind gesture, but in my world, kindness was a fleeting thing, like magic—a trick that dazzles for a moment and vanishes without a trace. It didn’t take long for Maxwell to piece together that I was a virgin, and I could only hope that knowledge would put an end to the degrading names. For three days, I stayed in that small, quiet space, trying to savor the peace while it lasted. The omegas brought my meals, but I saw the way they looked at me—distant, almost disdainful. They had little respect, but for once, I didn’t care.I learned that Maxwell and Clay had traveled, which explained the eerie silence surrounding me. The absence of their protective presence meant I was left alone with Lucian, and that thought haunted me.I knew Lucian resented me more than either of them, a cold, calculated hate that made the air feel heavier whenever he was nearby.

Scarlett’s POVLucian’s words struck like daggers, each one sharper than the last. “Clay and Maxwell might care for you, but I don’t, and I never will. I didn’t bring you here to dine with us—you’re beneath me. I don’t eat with people like you. I brought you here to set your boundaries.” His tone was icy, his gaze filled with disdain. Each word was designed to hurt, to remind me just how little he regarded the bond we shared.A shiver of anger and pain shot through me, but I held back my tears, swallowing them down. He was the one who disrespected the bond, not me. He was the one flaunting his lust for someone else. And now, with Clay and Maxwell gone, I was forced to endure every word, every bitter drop of his contempt, without an ounce of protection.“Stasia has moved in today,” he continued, gesturing to her with an approving glance that turned my stomach. “I don’t want you entering this place again. She’ll handle the chores here, and I’m sure Clay and Maxwell will agree. Make your

Scarlett’s POVLucian stood abruptly, gripping my arm with a force that made my skin throb. Before I could react, he dragged me to the door and shoved me out of the apartment, sending me sprawling onto the ground. Pain flared up in my arm, and I looked up at him, feeling the ache deep in my chest as his cold, burning gaze met mine. Fury blazed in his eyes, but in me, there was both anger and a profound, hollow hurt. If this was what it meant to have a mate, then perhaps the mate bond wasn’t a blessing. It was a curse.“When you grow the courage to reject me, let me know, Lucian,” I spat, my voice sharp and unwavering despite the pain. His expression shifted, his eyes widening at my defiance. I didn’t care about respecting him anymore. Respect had been drained from me, replaced by an anger that left no room for fear.I turned and walked back to my room, the weight of it all pressing down on me, turning my steps heavy. Once inside, I sat on the cold floor, letting my emotions spill over

Lucian’s POVScarlett had set that trap deliberately, urging me to reject her in front of Stasia, knowing full well I couldn’t do it. She wanted to get under Stasia’s skin, wanted to create conflict. I couldn’t deny that the mate bond compelled her to feel jealousy; it was natural, expected even. But it felt like a low blow for her to act on it. She knew I felt nothing for her. She had to know that, and yet she chose to provoke me. After all, she was my fated mate, and the bond was impossible to ignore. It tugged at me in ways I despised and couldn’t control. It had taken every ounce of resolve to bring Stasia here, to share my space with her, to commit to something I could control. And I knew, without a doubt, that I’d pay for it when Clay and Maxwell returned. They’d be furious, livid that I’d let another woman take Scarlett’s place here. And, as if the weight of their anger wasn’t enough, my wolf, Tiger, was giving me no peace over it. Tiger wanted Scarlett, a desire so intense it

Lucian’s POVStanding outside Scarlett’s door, listening to her muffled sobs, a weight settled heavily in my chest. I’d wanted to hurt her, but hearing her cry because of me—knowing I was the one inflicting this pain—brought no satisfaction. Against my better judgment, I stayed, drawn by the pull of the mate bond and by something else, something I didn’t want to name.Through the door, her soft, broken voice reached me, a bitter question tearing through the silence. *“Why?”* she whispered, the word laced with hurt and confusion. She was asking why this was happening, why I was treating her this way. I wanted to hate her, to let my anger drown any sense of sympathy, but the truth was becoming painfully clear. Scarlett had never done anything to deserve this. Aside from rejecting the bond, she hadn’t wronged me. Yet here I was, bound to Stasia, using her to punish Scarlett for things beyond her control. I’d hurt her, and for what? To satisfy my grudge?Tiger’s voice slipped into my mind

Lucian’s POVWhen we reached the bedroom, Stasia turned to me, her expression a mixture of anger and resignation. “I don’t think you’re ready for me, Lucian,” she said, her voice holding an edge of defiance. I noticed the absence of “Alpha” in her tone, a subtle change that stung, but I let it slide.“What do you mean?” I asked, trying to brush off the unease settling in my chest as I lay back on the bed.She crossed her arms, staring at me with something akin to disgust. “How can you feel anything for a whore who was sleeping around, knowing she had mates?” The words were venomous, and I shot upright, a low growl rumbling from my throat. Tiger stirred, his anger rising alongside mine. In that instant, I realized that while my feelings toward Scarlett were conflicted, I would not allow anyone to insult her—not even Stasia.“I might like you, and we may have slept together,” I warned, my voice steady and firm, “but don’t forget that I am your Alpha. You’d better watch your tone when yo

Scarlett’s POVWaking up in Lucian’s arms, I felt a strange calm. His presence felt different—softer, protective, even—yet I could barely process it. My body tensed, wary that this was a mistake, that he’d Realise where he was and lash out. I shifted carefully, wanting to put some distance between us before things turned ugly, but as I moved, his eyes opened. He looked at me with a gentleness I hadn’t seen before, his lips curling into a small smile. I glanced around the room, half-convinced I was still dreaming.“Alpha Lucian,” I stammered, feeling my heart race as he sat up, his gaze steady and calm.“Scarlett,” he said softly, his tone free of the bitterness I was used to. I opened my mouth to speak, to ask the question hanging in my mind, and before I could stop myself, it spilled out.“What about…” I hesitated, but I had to know. “What about Stasia?”His expression didn’t shift. “I asked her to leave,” he said simply. “It’s over.”I blinked, absorbing his words. Scarlett’s POVI stepped into the dining area, finding Lucian waiting at the table, alone. Stasia was truly gone, just as he’d promised. I felt a strange mix of relief and pressure all at once.“You look good,” he said, his voice warm and genuine. My heart betrayed me, leaping at the simple compliment, though I forced myself to remain neutral, trying to keep my emotions in check. But the mate bond’s pull was undeniable, and the longer I stayed with him and the others, the more it felt like a force working on its own, beyond my control. Last night, I’d slept deeply, wrapped in Lucian’s scent, that rich pinewood I was now learning to crave. I knew each of their scents by heart—Maxwell’s was earthy, sandalwood, and Clay’s held the warmth of cinnamon. The thought made me curious about my own scent, wondering what it meant to them, but I kept those thoughts to myself.“Please, relax, Scarlett,” he said gently, noticing my unease. “I promise, I won’t hurt you. I’ve made my choice. I’ve acce

Lucian’s POVElsa was hiding something from us. I could tell. She thought it would be better for us not to know, like she was shielding us from some truth that could break us. I prayed, deeply, that whatever she was holding back wasn’t something too awful, something that would shatter what little we had left.“I just need the spirit to give us a sign,” Maxwell murmured, his voice thick with grief as tears rolled down his cheeks. That’s all we really wanted—a sign. A clear path. We needed something solid, something real to grasp onto in this dark, foggy mess.Elsa’s face was calm as she replied, “I’ve already told you—the spirits say to form an alliance with the West. They are pointing west.”But I shook my head, frustration edging my voice. “Not for the war, Elsa. I need a direction to find Scarlett.”She lowered her head, a sad acknowledgment in her expression. “I don’t have magic, Alpha. I only know what the spirits choose to share with me. But I’ll tell you this: bittersweet news i

  • Scarlett (Second Edition)   Chapter 79: Bittersweet 2

Lucian’s POVThe room was filled with a heavy, suffocating silence. I felt my heart sink as I realized what this meant. Scarlett was out there, exposed and vulnerable, in a state that made her a target for any predator, any alpha, and we had no idea where she was or how to find her. And somehow, she was trying to reach us, trying to connect, but something was keeping her from us.The silence after Elsa’s words was suffocating. Her gaze held a sorrowful understanding, as if she saw through all the bitterness and regret we carried, all the wounds we had inflicted on ourselves and on Scarlett. Maxwell, fists clenched, got up and swung his fist hard into the wall, his knuckles splitting against the impact. I could feel the anguish radiating from him, a shared pain we both bore for what we had done to her.“I’m sorry,” Elsa said softly, her eyes flickering with genuine sadness. But her words offered no comfort; they only deepened the ache within me.I took a steadying breath, forcing mysel

Lucian’s POV“I’m sorry, Maxwell,” I murmured, desperation clawing at my voice. “I swear, I’ll do whatever it takes to make things right.”He looked at me, his face streaked with tears, his eyes hollowed by sorrow and anger. “You can’t bring her back, Lucian,” he whispered, his voice shaking. “You can’t… you can’t fix it. Don’t you see that?” He buried his head in his hands, the weight of grief pressing down on him until his shoulders slumped forward, defeated.“We took everything from her,” he continued, his words choked with guilt. “She had nothing, Lucian—no money, no security, no one. We stole it all. Nikolay was right to keep her from us… he saw what we were, what we’d do to her.” His voice cracked, and he wept openly, the kind of raw, unfiltered grief that comes when there’s nothing left to lose.“Please, Maxwell,” I urged, reaching for something—anything—that might bridge this chasm between us. “I know you felt it, too. She’s out there somewhere, and we can find her. I’ve been

  • Scarlett (Second Edition)   Chapter 78: Regret 2

Lucian’s POVThe memories twisted inside me, vivid and merciless. I thought of the day Maxwell and I came home and made her wear those damp, uncomfortable clothes because we refused to let her use our things. The cold-heartedness of it sickened me now, yet she had never complained. She just bore it all, quietly, with a strength we didn’t deserve to witness. And even after everything, she had opened her heart to us. She allowed herself to love us, to see something good in us when we gave her every reason not to.I clenched my fists, feeling the fire of anger and guilt burn within me. How could we have allowed people like Bianca, Stasia, and Gregory to treat her with such contempt? We favored the pack, protected their petty feelings over the well-being of the one who was supposed to be our mate, our equal. And now, we were paying for it. This mess was ours, a twisted reflection of everything we’d allowed and encouraged. The image of Timothy and Tasha flashed in my mind, and I felt a whi

Lucian’s POVLiving without Scarlett felt like drowning in darkness. Every day was an empty, colourless stretch, filled with nothing but sorrow. There was no joy left in my life, no light, no purpose. I spent most nights with a bottle in hand, numbing myself until I felt nothing at all. But even that brought no relief—it only deepened the void she left behind.Clay hadn’t given up, though. He clung to hope like it was the last shred of light in a world swallowed by shadows. He showed her photo to everyone he met, asking, pleading for any sign of her. He offered rewards, desperate promises, anything to find her again. But the days passed, and there was no news. His eyes looked more hollow with each passing day.And Maxwell… he was barely a man anymore. I saw the emptiness in his eyes, a haunting vacancy that mirrored my own. At first, he’d lash out, his anger finding no other place to go. Bianca and her child bore the brunt of his rage, but even he realised that hurting others wouldn’t

Scarlett’s POVThe car came to an abrupt stop, and Keith pulled away, stepping out quickly and rounding the vehicle to open my door. He lifted me out with ease, holding me as if I weighed nothing, his arms steady and unyielding. I clung to him, my body pressed against his as he carried me into the mansion.“All male workers—leave the premises immediately!” he called out, his voice echoing through the grand halls. The urgency in his tone left no room for argument, and as we moved deeper into the house, I felt the space empty around us, leaving only the two of us alone in our need.He laid me gently on the bed, and I couldn’t tear my dress off fast enough, the fabric tearing as I pulled at it, desperate to feel his skin against mine. The ache inside me was unbearable, like a burning hunger that wouldn’t be sated. I barely had time to process what was happening before Keith gently wrapped his arm around me, guiding me back to our table, his touch grounding me.“You can do as you wish with him,” he murmured, his voice low yet reassuring. “He’ll be locked up in the dungeon, waiting for whatever justice you decide. Let’s not let that bastard ruin our night.” I looked up at him, stunned by his loyalty. He was willing to imprison one of his own to honour what I’d been through, to make sure I felt seen and protected. In Redcape, Lucian and the others had always defended their pack above all else, turning a blind eye to crimes if it meant protecting their reputation or keeping the peace.
