Mikael looked at Rayvin as she looked down on the beer bottle she was twisting in her hands. He knew she was nervous about what she was about to tell him. Whatever it was, it had her thinking that she could not be his mate. He had understood that much.
Mikael didn’t want to belittle her problems, whatever they were. But he knew they would fix them together. He had no plans of letting go of her again.
“Ray, I don’t care what you are about to say. Well, that didn’t sound right,” he sighed and rubbed his neck.
“I do care because it seems important to you. What I’m trying to say is that it won’t change how I feel about you. You are my mate, and before you were my mate, you were my best friend. Nothing will change that,” he told her and placed his hand on her knee.
She looked up at him with a serious face. She nodded, but he had a feeling that she didn’t believe him.
“So, why can’t you be my mate?” he asked her. She looked surprised, and he had to chuckle.
“I can read you like a book Ray, always has. Something has stopped you from reaching out to me all these years. The same thing has you convinced that you can’t be my mate. What is it?” he asked. She sighed.
“You are right. But it’s not just one thing. Not for the last part, in any case. But yes, there is something that has made me keep my distance from you and the pack,” she nodded.
“And that is?” he probed.
“When I left nine years ago, I told you my mother had given me someone to contact,” Rayvin told him and he nodded.
“It was alpha Brutus. I called him and he made sure I got back to his pack safe. He knew my father, he knew what my father was,” she said and paused.
“You know you can tell me now. I’m your mate,” he smiled.
“Yeah, you are. I guess that is as good a place as any to begin. My father was a dragon, a golden dragon to be more specific,” she told him and then she watched him.
Mikael’s mind temporarily shut down. Her father had been a what? He tried to come to grips with what she had told him.
“But dragons aren’t real,” he said weakly.
“They are. Dragons are just not that common. They never have been, and they are slowly dying out,” she told him.
“So you turn into a giant lizard?” Mikael asked. Rayvin laughed and Mikael enjoyed seeing her lose her worried face for the moment.
“No, alpha boy, I don’t turn into a giant lizard. Dragons aren’t shifters, not in that sense. Not even pure dragons turn into the fairytale version of a dragon,” she told him.
“Um, okay,” he nodded. Mikael felt like he was way in over his head already.
“I have a dragon, just as I have a wolf. But my dragon doesn’t take physical form. She gives me abilities that I can use. Dragons come with different abilities, depending on what type of dragon they are,” she explained.
“You are a gold dragon, so you have a dragon that just hangs around?” he asked, trying to understand.
“Yeah, that’s basically it. She’s just like the wolf, just a lot more sarcastic in her persona, and she never needs to take over.” Rayvin nodded.
“Okay. I can’t say that I saw that one coming,” he honestly said.
“I know. Throughout history, dragons have been hunted. Mainly because of old folktales claiming we are guardians of treasures. Then there are our scales that are made from a material that is light and withstands most things, even magic in some cases. They were in high demand during the magical wars,” Rayvin told him.
“Scales? I thought you didn’t turn into a giant lizard?” he smiled.
“I don’t,” she smiled back. “But I have scales that appear if I need them. It’s like armour,” she said.
“That makes sense, I think,” Mikael said.
“You are taking this better than I thought,” she admitted.
“Well, sweetie, you have always been a dragon. I just haven’t known about it. So it doesn’t change anything,” he shrugged.
“Hybrid dragon, and yes, it does,” she said, becoming serious again.
Mikael desperately wanted to pull her into his lap, hold her close and reassure her that nothing would make him think of her differently. But that wasn’t what she needed. She needed to talk things out with him.
“How?” he asked and took her hand in his.
“Alpha Brutus knew my father, and he knew some of my father’s family. His two brothers. Alpha Brutus asked me if I wanted to get in touch with them. I was more than willing to do so. To get a chance to meet other dragons, I had never done that,” she sighed.
“Alpha Brutus warned me they were not what you would call gentle or kind. But I thought I could handle it,” Rayvin said.
“Did they hurt you?” Mikael asked in a low voice.
“No. They were polite, I think is the right word. My uncles were actually excited to meet me. They had lost contact with my father years before I was born and had only learnt of his death years after the fact.”
“I was at first happy that they seemed so pleased to meet me. Then I learnt why they were so pleased,” Rayvin said, looking uncomfortable.
“And why was that?” Mikael asked, even if he didn’t know if he wanted to know.
“Because I’m a woman. Apparently, there aren’t many female dragons left. My father’s oldest brother has a son five years older than me. They wanted me to take him as my mate,” she admitted and looked down at her lap.
Mikael growled loud at the thought of someone trying to take Rayvin away from him.
“Ray, you are mine. I will let no one take you from me,” he told her and he did what he had wanted to do all along.
He put the beer down on the table and pulled her onto his lap. His nose found the crook of her neck and he held her close. He could feel her relaxing into him.
“It’s not that simple, Max. I told you that dragons have been hunted. To avoid being killed, they have developed certain strategies. The first is secrecy. No one can kill you if they don’t know you’re a dragon,” she sighed.
“That’s why you weren’t allowed to tell anyone,” he said, still holding her close.
“Yes. The second one is power. My uncles are powerful men. They have the means to economically do substantial damage to a pack, or to anyone. Alpha Brutus kept me safe. They couldn’t go after Mistvalley as the pack isn’t relying on traditional investments for survival,” she told him.
Mikael started to understand. Rayvin had been trying to protect him and his pack from her uncles by staying away. At that moment, he felt such an intense feeling of love towards her it was almost painful.
“You protected us,” he mumbled against her skin.
“I have done the best I can,” she nodded.
“You don’t have to put all of that on your shoulders, Ray. Let me share that burden,” Mikael said. She shook her head.
“If I stay here, if I give up my other life, they will come after you. I can’t be the reason this pack gets hurt,” she told him. He could hear the pain in her voice.
He made her sit up in his lap so he could look into her eyes. There were unshed tears glistening in them.
“Don’t cry, sweetie. We won’t let them hurt our pack. Things are changing, the packs are coming together, and we are no longer alone,” he comforted her and pulled her into him again.
“I don’t know if I can risk it,” she said. “And I don’t think I would make a good luna anyhow,” she added.
“What are you talking about?” he asked. That idea seemed ridiculous to him.
“I’m not that shy little girl anymore, Max. I’m a trained warrior. I’m not warm and caring. There is no part of me that would like to go around and cuddle pups and sip tea with the knitting group. I’m blunt, sarcastic, and my mouth can give a sailor a run for his money,” she told him. Mikael had to chuckle.
“Is that what you think a luna does?” he asked.
“Well, yes,” she nodded.
“No, sweetie. A luna protects the pack and makes sure they have what they need. She is the counterpart to the alpha and his partner. You have spent nine years protecting this pack on your own. No one asked you to. You certainly had no obligation to do so after the way my father treated you. But you instinctively kept them, and me, safe. That is why the goddess destined you to be my luna,” Mikael told her.
She was quiet for a long while.
“Does that mean you want me to stay?” she asked.
“Ray, there is no way I’m letting you go anywhere. You are staying with me and the pack. The rest we will figure out,” he said.
“Okay. If we are doing this, I have some demands,” she said.
“Demands?” he asked, surprised.
“Well, rules or requests, or whatever you want to call them,” she shrugged, sitting up so she could look at him.
“Fine, let’s hear them,” he said.
“I appreciate you wanting this, wanting me. But we are both shell-shocked at the moment. Today has been an emotional rollercoaster, and I can’t think it has been any different for you. You can’t decide about us yet. I’m asking you to think it over for a couple of days,” she told him.
Mikael looked at her. He knew his feelings wouldn’t change in a couple of days. They had been the same for years.
“I’ll agree, if you stay here, in the guest room, and you let me spend time with you. And you let me explain the situation to the pack. I can leave out the dragon part, but they need to know what is going on,” he said.
She looked at him; she didn’t look too pleased with telling the pack.
“Okay, but if you are going to tell them, tell them everything, including what I am,” she nodded in the end.
“Are you sure?” he asked, and she nodded again.
“Okay. What’s the next thing?” he wanted to know.
“I will finish my mission. I know how alphas are about their mates, but this is not negotiable. If I’m leaving my pack and forsaking my role as beta, I will do this for my alpha as a last thank you. It seemed important to him, he is quite a fan of luna Bella,” she said.
Mikael didn’t like it. She was right in thinking he would hate the fact that she put herself in danger. But on the other hand, it was for Bella and it was a human she was going after.
“Okay, I can agree with that. If you will accept help from my gamma, Diana, and our warriors, if you need it,” he agreed.
“Really?” she asked. She seemed surprised that he didn’t fight her on it.
“I understand where you’re coming from, and your alpha isn’t the only one that likes Bella,” he smiled.
“Really?” she said again, raising an eyebrow.
“Eh, not like that. I don’t like her the way I like you. I mean, you know what I mean,” he hurriedly said. He didn’t want her to think he had feelings for Bella. Sure, he flirted with her, but that was just a little fun banter. Rayvin laughed.
“It’s okay, Max, relax. I can’t believe Gray is mated to an omega. Of all people, I would have thought the goddess would give him someone with little more assertiveness,” she chuckled.
“You haven’t met Bella, have you?” he laughed.
“No, never had the pleasure,” she told him.
“She is no meek and humble omega. That woman has a will of steel and can be right out scary when she gets pissed,” he chuckled.
“Really?” she said.
“Really. We should visit them someday. You could get to meet Bella and talk about your mission and see that not all lunas as soft and submissive,” he nodded, liking the idea the more he thought about it.
“I think I would like that. And it would be nice to see Gray again,” she said.
“I will call him and arrange it,” he said.
They stayed like that for a while, Rayvin in his lap, tucked under his chin. Mikael loved sitting in silence and enjoying the fact that he had finally found Rayvin again and had convinced her to give them a chance.
‘Ben, arrange an obligatory pack meeting after dinner today. Only ones excluded are the people on duty,’ he mind linked his beta.
‘Sure thing, alpha. Am I to understand that this means we are getting a luna?’ his friend asked.
‘It’s a little complicated. But we will get there,’ Mikael answered as he gently stroked Rayvin up and down her spine.
‘Okay then. Happy to hear that,’ Ben said.
‘Did you talk to your sister?’ Mikael asked.
‘I did. She knows not to cause any trouble. I told her it was serious this time. That she would end up without a pack if she continued,’ Ben told him.
‘Thank you, Ben. I know it’s not easy for you,’ Mikael said.
‘It is what it is. She has brought it on herself.’ Ben tried to sound normal. But Mikael knew his friend hated how his sister acted and it broke his heart to deal with the consequences of it.
He leaned back on the couch and felt Rayvin adjust to find a comfortable position against him.
“Let’s eat dinner here and then we can talk to the pack,” he said.
“Okay,” she agreed.
Rayvin was sitting in Mikael’s lap with his arms around her and listening to his heartbeat. It was soothing and relaxing. She still couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that Mikael had asked her to stay. After everything she had told him, he still wanted her to stay. She wondered if he would feel the same way after he had time to think. But at least she had given herself a couple of days to enjoy this. “Are you getting hungry?” Mikael asked her. “A little, but I think I have decided to take up permanent resident here,” she smiled.“I wouldn’t complain,” he chuckled and kissed her on top of her head. Rayvin’s phone started ringing. It was the melody to “Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf”. Mikael chuckled even more.“Sorry, I need to get this,” she told him and fished the phone out of her pocket. “Sure, you can use my office if you need privacy,” he said, still not letting go of her. “This will do,” she shrugged and shifted in his lap so she could lean back against his chest. “A
Rayvin was more nervous than she wanted to admit as they walked back to the pack house. Mikael had a firm grip on her hand and she tried to focus on the feeling of the sparks dancing over her skin where he touched her. This was a big step for her. She hadn’t even told her own pack what she was. Alpha Brutus knew, of course, as did his son and their gamma that had trained her. But that was it. Now she had told Mikael that he should tell everyone. It was scary, but she felt it was necessary. If she was going to do this, if she wanted to give this a real chance. She knew she couldn’t keep any secrets. Mikael seemed to notice her mood. He stopped before they got to the door and looked at her. “Are you okay with this?” he asked her. “I’m nervous, but okay,” she smiled at him. “You would tell me if you weren’t, right?” “Of course I would. When have I ever told you what you wanted to hear?” she said, tilting her head as she looked at him.“Good point,” he nodded, and started walking a
“Relax, Max, I didn’t expect you to be a monk. You’re an alpha, a good-looking one for that. I don’t care,” she chuckled and took a swipe of beer. He looked up at her. He still looked hesitant, as if it was a trap. Rayvin felt sorry for him and put her beer down and turned so that she faced him. “Listen to me, Max. I don’t care who you have seen or how many. As long as they are in the past, that’s where they will stay. Okay?” she said. He relaxed and smiled.“Okay,” he nodded, and took another sip of beer. “Besides, it’s not like I’m a virgin,” she said, making Mikael splutter out his beer and start coughing.“Are you okay?” she asked, worried. She let go of his hand and got up to gently pat him on the back.“You can’t say things like that,” he wheezed.“What? That I’m not a virgin? Do you have a problem with that?” she asked. Looking at him as he drew in a breath a little too quickly, which triggered another round of coughing. “No,” he finally got out. “But when you talk about it
“You have good reasons why you hold back Ray. I don’t have a problem with it. I’m happy,” Mikael smiled. Rayvin looked into his eyes and couldn’t help but to smile back. She was happy too, she never thought she would have this, and now she had Mikael. The thought was dizzying. “I really want to kiss you, Ray,” Mikael confessed.Rayvin acted before she had time to think it through too carefully. She put a hand on his shoulder and closed the distance between them. The moment their lips met sparks erupted throughout her body.Mikael seemed taken by surprise, but soon recovered and took a hold of her nape and deepened the kiss. His soft lips were demanding against hers, egging her on. His hand around her drew her in closer to him. As she let out a sigh in contentment, he let his tongue find its way into her mouth. Rayvin lost all concept of time as they kissed. Both her arms were wrapped around Mikael’s neck. His hand around her nape holding her tightly and with his other arm, he made
Rayvin happily continued eating. The food tasted amazing and she was hungry after the morning’s run. Mikael watched her eat.“What?” she asked when he continued.“Nothing, I just thought you had outgrown your sweet tooth and had gone all health nut,” he smiled, looking at her plate. It largely was covered in pancakes, fruit and syrup. There was a small pile of scrambled eggs and a good amount of bacon. She shrugged. “Why would I do that?” she asked.“Yeah, it sounded wrong the moment I heard myself say it,” he laughed and swiped a strip of bacon off her plate and started eating it.“Hey! Next time there will be a fork in your hand, alpha boy,” she warned him. He just laughed and kissed her. After they were finished eating, they headed up to Mikael’s office with Ben and Diana. Mikael led Rayvin over to the couch and sat next to her with his arm around her shoulders. “So, what did you find?” he asked Ben and Diana. “Everything looked okay. I have sent pictures to your email,” Dian
“You can shift your body temperature, you can drink scolding coffee, you have scales that act as armour,” Mikael started counting on his fingers. “I’m guessing you withstanding my father’s alpha command should be included,” he then added.Rayvin, that had been nodding up until then, frowned. “Not really, but kind of,” she said. “Could you be any vaguer?” he laughed.“Sorry,” she smiled. “I’m not used to talking about this, not even my alpha and I talk openly about it,” she admitted.“Am I making you uncomfortable?” he asked her.“No, I just realised that I don’t really know how to explain everything. It hasn’t exactly been explained to me. I just have learned along the way,” she smiled. “But let’s start with the alpha command. If you have a human in your pack, can you use the command on them?” she asked Mikael.“You know I can’t,” he huffed.“Why not?” she asked.“You know this Ray,” he said.“Yes, but tell me anyway,” she insisted.“The alpha command only works on shifters, as it
“Of course,” Mikael said with a small smile, and took Rayvin’s hand. They walked to her car in silence. Rayvin knew that this was hard for Mikael, it was hard for her as well. Her body and her animals objected to the idea of going off pack land without her mate. They hadn’t marked and mated, and Milly was here. Rayvin had a feeling she should remain to stake her claim. But she also knew she had to go. The sooner this investigation was over, the sooner she could start focusing on her new life. Somewhere between yesterday afternoon and today, she had stopped seeing this as something that would end and started seeing it as permanent. If she was lucky, she would find this Frank by the end of the day and she could write up her report. Mikael and she could go over to Graham and his luna and give them the report in person. Rayvin was curious about luna Bella. She would like to meet this omega luna. They arrived at her car. Mikael tugged on her hand so she ended up in his arms. “Be careful
Mikael missed Rayvin the moment she got in her car and drove off. With a heavy sigh, he turned around to head up to the pack house. He could as well get some work out of the way so he could spend time with Rayvin when she got back. He thought about the knives she had on her and shook his head. He understood that as an agent of the Mistvalley pack; she was well trained. But silver knives. Those could cause a lot of damage even with a small knick. He knew he had to accept who she was, but his alpha protectiveness was acting up. He sat down at his desk and started looking through reports of the chains of gyms he owned. It was just one of the business ventures that he had that helped the pack by creating job opportunities, giving them a stable income and a standing in the human world. The gyms looked to be doing good. Werewolves were naturally prone to training and as they naturally had toned bodies and good physical appearance, humans prefer their instructors before human ones. There
Mikael looked at his mate and he knew she would dig her heals in on this. She had the adorable wrinkle between her eyebrows. He would have enjoyed a small scuffle with her any other day. But not today, not with these stakes. “Ray,” he said in a warning voice. “Max.” She had mirrored his voice and stood looking at him. “You are not thinking about going in to that place,” he said.“I am.”“Forget about it. I will lock you in one of the cells before I let you do something like that,” he told her. She scoffed and walked up to him. She stood so close to him she had to tilt her head slightly to look him in the eyes. He could see every golden thread in her eyes. “Listen to me, Max. I love you, I respect you, but that does not mean you get to control me. I have told you from the start, I’m not a meek and obedient Luna. You told me that was okay, that I could be who I wanted. Well, this is who I am. I am the kind of Luna that won’t stand by when I know I can help. If it turns out the agent
“I knew she never really cared for me,” Mikael confirmed, and it tore at Rayvin’s heart. “But I never blamed her for it. You saw me as your successor, as a carbon copy of you. She saw me as a duty, a box to check as Luna. I understood this early on. It didn’t mean it was easy to live with. Do you remember the summer Grey, his sister and mother spent here? I dreamed about Lilly asking me if I wanted to go back with them when they left. I had never seen another Luna with her children. I thought our family was how all Alpha families were. But seeing her, how she treated her children and how often Alpha George called to check on his family and how much attention both Grey and Lotte got. It was eye opening and gut wrenching all at the same time,” Mikael explained. Rayvin could feel the old pain he carried through their mate bond. “I gave you everything. I made sure you grew up strong, not spoiled,” his father objected.“You gave me nothing. I had to earn everything, even your attention. T
After the call ended, Mikael got up with a grim look on his face. “I’ll make sure the preparations to move him are started,” he told Rayvin. Rayvin got up and took his hand. “Stop. Just pause for a second,” she said. He had blocked their mate bond again, but Rayvin didn’t need it to know he was hurting. “You and me are going for a run,” she added.“Ray, we can go after I get things started,” he objected, and she hated how tired he sounded. “No, I’m going to insist that we go right now. Don’t make me use the mate card, Max.” He looked at her for a moment and then nodded. “Thank you, love,” she said, giving him a soft kiss and leading him out into the forest. They stripped down and shifted. ‘Catch me if you can, I won’t even use my abilities,’ Rayvin mind linked Mikel before taking off. For an hour, he chased her all over the pack land. Finally, Rayvin let him catch her by the waterfall and they both lied down in the snow and watched the dancing water. ‘Feeling better?’ she asked. ‘
Rayvin was discussing the training of the warriors with Diana. They had brainstormed and had the idea of building an obstacle course in the woods. It would make it easy to train warriors in different conditions and if it was done correctly, it would be able to adapt to the level of the trainee. Rayvin’s phone rang. She looked at it and saw an unknown number. There wasn’t anything strange about it. She hadn’t added all members of the pack’s numbers to her phone. “Rayvin,” she answered, not knowing if it was someone from the pack or a human. “Explain yourself, Rayvin,” someone shouted. Diana could hear it on the other side of the table and raised an eyebrow. “Hello, uncle. Yes, I have had a good day. How about you?” Rayvin said in a calm voice. She had never heard her uncle this upset before. It had to mean the actions the packs had taken were having an effect. “Stop playing games. What the fuck have you done? Why are our investments dropping like stones in the ocean?” he asked in a
Mikael looked at the report on his computer screen and frowned. He made sure to check his protective barrier toward Rayvin was in place. He didn’t want her to worry or blame herself. Mikael had sent Ben away to go to the pack doctor with Diana. It was time for the first official checkup. He heard to door open, and he didn’t need to lock up, he didn’t even need to rely on the exotic smell that grew stronger as his mate made her way to him. Rayvin was the only one who would enter his office without asking for permission. Not even Ben or Diana did it. But there was no ceremony between Mikael and Rayvin. She walked up to him and sat at his desk. He looked up at her and smiled as he placed his hand on her knee. As always, his hands always sought out contact with her. “Hi,” she said. “Hi.” She looked at him as if she was waiting for something. When nothing happened, she shook her head.“Are you ready to talk about it or do you need to brood some more?” she asked.“What are you talking abo
The party was in full swing, and Rayvin was having fun. For one night, it was good for the pack to let go of everything that was going on and just enjoy themselves. She and Mikael were making the rounds around the room, talking to people and making sure everyone was having a good time. “Vinny, it’s time for us to leave,” Luna Bella said and gave Rayvin a hug.“Thanks for coming, Bee. And thank you for lending me your stylist,” Rayvin said, giving Mickey a hug as well. “It was fun, it brought back a lot of memories,” Luna Bella told her. Mikael and Rayvin followed the party from the Blackmoon pack to their car and waved them off. “We have been at the party for almost three hours,” Mikael informed Rayvin as he closed his arms around her. “I didn’t know you were keeping track,” she said with a smile.“Three hours must be enough, don’t you think? No one would miss us if we didn’t go back,” he continued. “Tired already? I knew you were a little older than me, but you are losing your s
“Are you nervous?” Luna Bella asked as Mickey did Rayvin’s makeup. “Definitely,” Rayvin confessed and squirmed a little in her seat. “Don’t be, it will go perfectly,” Diana reassured her, and took another sip of the sparkling cider. Rayvin had decided they all were drinking cider instead of champagne. “You look amazing, if I may say so myself. It’s easy when working with people like you and Bee,” Mickey said. Rayvin was thrilled that he, Logan, Luna Bella and Alpha Graham had made the trip to Whiteriver to attend her Luna ceremony. She was even more grateful that Mickey had volunteered to help her get ready. He was an amazing stylist. Mickey had made Rayvin’s blond hair form into loose waves that cascaded down her shoulders and back. He had put soft makeup on her face, but as a contrast put gold eyeliner in an extended cat eye. It made her amber eyes stand out and gave her a warrior look. “Time for the dress,” Diana said, excitedly. Rayvin had listened to everyone and ordered her
It was Wednesday afternoon, Rayvin and Diana walked up to a tidy-looking town house in the human town. Diana was carrying a gigantic apple pie. Rayvin had asked the kitchen to make it for the bookclub she and Diana had been invited to. She had, unfortunately, forgotten to tell them it was meant for humans. They had made it with werewolf appetite in mind. ‘Ready?’ Rayvin mind linked Diana.‘No, are you sure I need to be here?’ Diana asked. ‘If I have to be here, you have to,’ Rayvin insisted and rang the doorbell. Mrs Goldstein opened the door with a big smile on her face. “Hello, Mrs Goldstein. This is my friend Diana Quickpaw,” Rayvin said.“Hello, nice to meet you. And please, we aren’t that formal here. Call me Ruth.”“thank you for inviting us, Ruth. We brought some apple pie,” Diana said. “Oh my,” Ruth said, looking at the giant thing in Diana’s hands. “You two know we are just six persons in the book club and it’s a one-day event,” she then giggled and took the apple pie fro
“What do you think?” Rayvin asked Mikael when they were alone again. “I like him. I have a feeling Gray will get two new pack members soon,” he said. “You think Milly will make a permanent move?” she asked and leaned against him. He pulled her closer and kissed her neck.“I think so. She seems to be happy there, and he has a good job in the area. I can’t say I’m sorry to see her go. But I am happy that she has found her place in life. If nothing else, it will make Ben’s life easier,” he said.“You’re right, Ben will have other things to deal with soon,” Rayvin said with a smile. “And I agree with you. I think he will make a good addition to a pack. It’s easy to see he is just as much in love with her as she is with him. They make a good couple,” she added. “One less problem. I think this is the beginning of a new trend. Our problems will start to untangle and go away from now on,” he told her. “Don’t jinx it, honey,” she joked. “Do you have anything else planned for today?” he as
